[Music] [Music] twas the week before christmas in a far away land our three boys departed on a tour most grand over rivers and hills their journey would go on a christmas special strangely without snow and would they be driving more supercars nay with a reasonable budget with 10 grand they'd play the cars they'll unwrap and then they shall see the true answer to just how bad could this be they've brought us to medieval times yeah i thought pf chang's house was crazy well i hope the kitchen has some silverware but maybe we'll get knighted merry christmas everyone and welcome back to car trek we are here at a castle in the wine country of missouri and auto tempa sent us a text a couple of weeks ago and told us to buy sight unseen secret santa style the most unreliable luxury cars on earth and i'd imagine we've found some good ones as you know auto tempest allows you to search all the major listing sites at the same time so finding three unreliable cars was like finding three rusty nails in a haystack it's reliable wait what we're supposed to be reliable cars why would we have you buy unreliable cars who wants to watch that you want us to buy an acura a lexus and a hyundai and gallivant happily ever after across the state ed you told us to buy it yes that's really unreliable it's an unreliable car nobody wants to buy reliable cars they probably want us to because that's what most people do when they shop on auto temp is they find nice reliable cars because they're actually going to own them yes normal people do this we don't buy that stuff i'll show you they send it this okay let's take a look right there right that can you read are you okay you little burnt out too many vinwicki car stories it it does say reliable well maybe they will defy the odds and get us to whatever finish line auto tempest has in mind we can be optimistic it's a christmas spirit i don't know you you have to you have to see your car that's it's not going to happen well tyler i believe this one is yours so why don't you do the honors and unwrap it first okay oh you're gonna love this wow since the axis powers have the italians and germans join force in such a terrible way [Music] this was really something but that day was a long time ago it's perfect i'd love to have a car like this no i'll tell you what you'd love to have and that is over here my friend so first off best color and you'll find underneath the wrapping the best car in the world a maserati the spork is back that's right everyone deserves a maserati my friends oh freddie this is wonderful i bet it has enough electrical gremlins to make dexter's dark passenger look like cindy lou who's christmas cheer i don't know what any of that means and look oh my duo select yes it wouldn't be a car truck without a flappy paddle gearbox that's for sure that's right oh my goodness oh yes it's a neiman marcus edition yes i know that's your favorite store okay well you know well we know that okay so they only made you should know this 60 of them yes they only made 60 of them oh yes oh it's so good freddie you could not have done any better after all the terrible things i said about your car you have done this exactly the way i told you to not the way auto-tunes i've done better that's the best is definitely last freddy really oh you are in for a treat okay uh take off its little cod piece there behind the bow i sort of have an idea of what this could be yes a mack truck i think okay is it a conan exec right konig's egg it's a it's a pagani it's a oh no oh careful three two one [Laughter] it's a rolls royce this is from the stone age the greatest present anyone's ever got absolutely it's the cheapest running and driving rolls royce in the world and i bought it for you that running and driving is it though wow okay i hope so that's what they told me oh my wow hold it freddy open the door okay it smells like the mesothelioma express in here yeah uh it's missing a few things oh wow you're going to need a mac car freddy that's what you do is project cars you know oh yeah build it better [Music] yeah oh freddy it's already been on fire a little bit it's perfect for you just like all the best cars are it looks reliable it's gonna get there merry christmas do you have any idea how much any of this stuff costs the brakes the suspension the engine who cares i want to drive my car let's go i don't want to drive i'm doing it i'm getting it i'm sorry this is so bad [Applause] okay okay all right this is an interesting road all right let's see what she's got well good thing there was nothing to hit there off to a great start i just crashed it as tyler was confusing his new present with a trophy truck we three set out on a journey over the river and through the woods to even more obscenely bumpy roads it was time to see just how good we were at buying terrible cars for each other this maserati was certainly a long way from italy and i cannot imagine the factory workers ever expected their wares to be driven on roads like these good gracious auto tempest this is where you want us to play with these trucks wow not only did auto tempest put us in the middle of nowhere but these roads are awful but here we are i will say that since this car has what is fundamentally a manual transmission we can have a little bit more fun out here [Music] i know freddie thought that he was going to absolutely sabotage me in this given my general disdain that was well expressed last series you don't look tired did someone else push that here for you dude i thought we were friends maserati owners don't have any friends when you see somebody in a car like that you know they can speak from authority on the best male enhancement products he got me my favorite thing a rare italian sports car this one is number nine of 60 of the neiman marcus editions of the 2005 quattroporte so it's rare it's numbered and it's pretty special and it says it was built for mona now i am not normally one to name cars but i suppose i have to dub the fair maiden mona the maserati now this car was sold out of the christmas catalog for neiman marcus every year they had a different car and they generally had one consistent theme catastrophic depreciation was it a curse hard to say but neiman marcus did declare bankruptcy this year now of course this is not the only car that neiman marcus sold out of their christmas catalog they did an m6 convertible they did a 2013 mclaren mp412c spider they did a vanquish volante in turquoise generally they sell out in about 30 minutes and so they're in high demand and it's quite an honor i suppose to be able to buy one but they tend to not do very well financially for the new owners now when this car came out everyone assumed that it was the perfect and more interesting replacement for their fifth consecutive s-class but what they didn't expect was the way that maserati executed on the idea of a big luxo barge sedan even though it has beautiful wood beautiful leather and it has pretty decent looking exterior lines done by pin and farina which they're extremely proud of in all of their infinite wisdom the people at maserati decided to make everything electronic anything that should just open with a latch like the glove box has an electronic button so if you lose power in this car you lose everything it does pretty much and so it is one of those cars that we know to be the most unreliable cars on earth but i will say in this very probably evanescent moment this car is functioning pretty decently freddie might have done something right [Music] this is actually my first time driving a rolls royce and my entire life has been kind of chasing this dream of getting depreciated luxury cars and the top of that list was always a rolls royce and i was really really excited when i saw tyler got this for me but as soon as i stepped in here and now that i'm driving it i don't think this is exactly the right car okay actually i think it might be exactly the right car i need it's already making itself more light just put that there so i actually don't know anything about this engine but i don't think anybody else does either because when this car was made rolls royce didn't put out any figures on horsepower or torque or acceleration because they felt that the power should be adequate and right now we're going up a hill that's a little bit pock-marked and uh it's struggling because this car weighs the better part of three tons come on baby you can do it okay brakes are not there this has a really complicated braking system in that the hydraulics for the brakes also are shared with the hydraulics for the suspension which means that if you have a leak in either one of them you can lose both which is a really good way to lose 30 000 because that's exactly how much it costs to replace the entire system road time oh yeah listen to that six and three quarter liter v8 this is a car that is more boat like than car like i am floating along and i do mean floating because i feel like the steering wheel is not connected to the front wheels in the least i mean i'm moving it a lot there's a lot of play in the steering wheel and the back end seems like it's in a different time zone the steering wheel is very thin it's covered in a little bit but an acceptable amount of mold uh it smells well it smells different in here over the years seals may have gone some water may have gotten in tyler's gift as good as it may be right now i really hope he doesn't surprise me with anything else like uh mold poisoning or pontivirus or this car spontaneously combusting i don't like cars being on fire a lot of smoke so to sum up this first drive i'm gonna take some advice from my mom she always told me if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all so uh [Music] yeah this car still got it we were supposed to be buying each other the most unreliable horrible cars but ed got me a really good one this this engine's solid it's a beautiful car i look like jason statham in the transporter i'm cool it actually gave me a very very nice christmas gift unlike what i did to freddie yeah ed tends to buy cars with very shady histories that somehow still work and this is a perfect example of it the uh prior owner to this car was a prostitute now i should probably say that she's allegedly a prostitute but that would be a disservice to the three municipalities in metro atlanta that had convicted her of such things so i guess just when you thought that kimmy was the craziest former owner that your lamborghini could have this comes out of nowhere and he used the cars to ship drugs cocaine and other drugs across the u.s canada border obviously if this car could talk we could have a lot of ghost stories to sell but still works very very nice gift for ned it has an exhaust on it that looks ugly the tips are hideous but listen to that it's a lamborghini yes and the check engine light is not on so all the normal v10 problems with the carbon buildup and the intake flaps being stuck closed and the injectors screwed up all these multi thousand dollar problems aren't existing on this car right now there's also no air ride warning message the air suspension is working it's just traction control and air bag that's that's it on the parking brake but who cares i'm actually feeling pretty good about making it into this thing it runs it drives it crashes it slices it dices it does everything it needs to do ed screwed up in the best way possible for me i've got a fully functional car but then i learned that my audi had a completely different definition of the word functional oh ah maiden voyage a self-inflicted wound i did that that's that's pilot error for sure i took a fully functional car and made it uh non-functional it's a spare situation here oh well i guess ed anticipated this uh happening because wow this is a [Music] wow all right let me see if there's a battery hookup under the hood here there's no hood release or hey [Applause] oh yeah i got a battery come on a perfectly fine gift and i break it oh it's taking air it's taking air that's good come on we have 10 psi i can make a whistle i found the hole right in the sidewall just where you want to have a hole in your tire yes [Music] look at that thing okay a little hard to get out of okay careful you barely got it stopped there uh it doesn't do that very well how was that you know i understand that i deserved that for all the hard time i gave you about your maserati last time but i have to say it's squirly where you want it to be it it only has a few lights on that seem troublesome so it's a pretty good car you did well everybody needs a maserati experience at some point in their life yes but i think you're going to get pulled over with this thing for boating without a license it's not very good in handling or braking or acceleration or a luxury or basic hygiene department but i don't want to speak ill of the person that got me the gift good for you you've learned the gratitude speaking of that word where is he where's our boy at i should be hearing a 5.2 liter v10 somewhere in that wooded area over there i i don't i don't think he must have crashed i think he's dead could be we'll have a simple ceremony off we go as my audi's tire slowly whistled itself to death i limped back to the castle hoping the other two wouldn't notice oh i think i hear something all right is it a bit it's a bit lopsided i think oh yeah what what happened yeah it was a little pilot air um unfortunately but the car is a lot broken but it runs great so ed's merry christmas as opposed to probably freddie i'm sorry well well here's the thing here's the thing i don't want to speak ill of anybody who gives me gifts you did last time the whole time literally the whole time that's not true guys okay i'm being serious right now i i don't like this car do you love it no you know there's a reason why i don't like these cars you are the car killer this car is uh good in very many ways that i will probably find out later it's bad but it's better than half of your fleet at home all right i got a text from auto tempest congratulations on your new quality dependable cars they obviously haven't figured out that we didn't do that since driving such reliable cars on the road would be a non-event and we know you want to have some fun we have some adverse driving circumstances ready for you this castle sits atop a 100 acre estate and we have used some of it to create a rally stage go see who can manage the best time around it okay so here here's the thing okay i get quattro right yeah quattro rally pedigree however very low ground clearance i can fix that yes well it looks like you fixed it yes yeah but uh yes ground clearance absolutely rolls royces were used in safaris in africa off-road yeah they did great for that yes who's gonna win now you should not patch this tire no no and then go put it along this court does it have a spare yes i haven't seen it yes we'll put this bear on and yes after ed inspected tyler's spare and confirmed it did in fact exist he then gave tyler the gift of self-reliance by leaving him to change it all three of us then went to the top of auto tempest rally stage where we would have to bomb down a rough gravel path that had jumps loops and trees just inches away from our fenders but i had many reasons to be confident all right so a rally stage with a rolls royce that was not purchased by me sight unseen this day is a little bit unusual let's see how it does all right she's a little bit floaty here it just has a burst of torque and then [Music] nothing i think something has come undone from my trunk area all right wow oh break break break break break wow i'm having to do a lot of sawing at the wheel a lot of people say that this car is sort of like a cathedral but honestly this is less of a cathedral and more of an old barn gotta feather the throttle a little bit nope oh that's not the direction i wanted to go and don't hit the tree the finish line is in sight coming in hot okay everything still connected car not on fire we're good all right guys i made it tyler you're up now admittedly my confidence is shot from that first little run but if i don't do anything cute this quattro all-wheel drive was developed on this terrain but here goes nothing oh [Music] whoa all right pretty planted here i'm flying oh geez it's too low come on car oh no i can't go as fast as i can because it's strange tight turn here yes no problem with the quattro fire effect all right circle time around this dump without hitting the stump dang it okay i won't take the tail out there we go here we go don't go up the road not anything cute tyler oh that's the castle through the gates and across the line i fell fast also felt dirty and you're good to go driving a car like this on a regular road is like recreational russian roulette but taking it on a course like this is the next level it's like a meghan markle situation you told me i was going to be a princess and now we're in the middle of forest in missouri so here goes nothing [Music] redline burn out through first second oh this is lovely freddy you have done a good thing oh yes oh so good it's actually very communicative oh bit of a jump and oh goodness what a jump whoa miss that stuff and here we go oh some lamp failure probably listen there's an optimism to driving a car like this it's like believing that the noises in a casino are actually people winning yes [Music] oh yeah all right oh around the tree flow in two times around come on come on come on come on yes oh man a lot of errors and we are castle [Music] that was fantastic what a car sorry i'm sorry about the air we'll be fine oh we made it [Applause] how was that wow that was awesome you are quite the show-off that's for sure yes i almost over did it here locked up the brakes i did almost did a transporter too into that lake there and as old as the air is in that tire i think you'd only have had three good ones to breathe from for that to happen well that handled like a school bus but it was very very comfortable i think at one point something fell off there was a horrible knocking noise but it got better i'm sure it healed itself well as i came through the gate my phone vibrated so i would assume that is our times from the auto tempest spy drone is that how they did it they have the technology freddy your time was 54 seconds ah is that that good that's good that's good i'm gonna say that's good that's an awesome time in this moment it's good but not for long because my time was 42 seconds it's it's it's nothing but i had a lot of fun whatever i don't care however i also have to concede because tyler yours was 40. kidding me what 40 seconds cuatro quattro 40. instead of card trick we should call this tyler wins because i win a lot no matter what what what yeah you are living at red line in in how do you lose i because i was sideways the whole time style points oh man it was so much fun and honestly the car handled it well my headlight auto leveling broke but i suppose beyond that it did a brilliant job i do smell a little bit of coolant though but whatever that's that's kind of that's standard absolutely oh i got another text from auto tempest 2020 has been a really tough year but christmas can still be saved your final goal will be a very special delivery to a town a few hundred miles away but between now and then you and your cars will be tested to make sure you're up for the task the castle is a very special place and inside you'll find some gifts one is for you guys but the others are empty your first task tomorrow is to see whose car can fit the most presence in it enjoy your accommodations sounds like fun my car just went on a rally stage it is very old and very broken there is zero chance that it goes hundreds of miles anywhere well we're gonna get to watch it fail spectacularly shall we go inside i'm ready to see the inside of this german playboy mansion in missouri seriously it did a really bad job with this car i did a great job next time on car track oh my whoa okay oh yeah okay it's all right sorry we got it we got it okay don't fall over don't fall over oh I'm not a fan of this top gear knockoff. It's so unnatural and scripted. I enjoy watching some of them individually but together, they suck.

I'm enjoying these quite a lot. Yes, I know these car challenges are similar to Top Gear, but why should that matter? I'm having fun watching it and I hope they make many more.

Why all the hate in the comments? This is reasonably well done, the guys seem like they are having a good time doing it, and on some level all of us on this car forum are curious what it would be like to try to buy the worst cheap ultra luxury car and spend a weekend screwing around with it.

Oh, and it's free.

It's kind of what Top Gear used to be like before the trio got very old, very rich and very famous with huge production budgets. It's silly, campy, and not meant to be serious.

And it's free.

I'm only 1/3 of the way through it, and already it's better than most of the "new" Top Gear or American Top Gear episodes.

They certainly need some seasoning but this series is generally trending well. It really fills a void that old top gear just doesn't do anymore. These are more simple cars and challeneges where grand tour is all exotic locations and absurd cars now. I love Hoovie by himself so its odd i think he struggles the most in these, he seems so unatural. I gotta say Ed really is good off the cuff and hilarious. Im hopeful for this series. I was critical of the first one because it was such an OG top gear rip off (not that theres still some here). The way i see it is its content i enjoy and hopefully it keeps gradually improving

I wonder if that Maserati was Paul and Todd’s car from everyday driver. They just wrapped up a year with cheap luxury cars. A VW Phateon and a purple Neumann Marcus Maserati.

So I don't hate it, but its natural to compare it to the old Top Gear and in that regard it falls short. That's because this show, and so many others like it are about cars and stunts while Top Gear is really about friendship.

Top gear is three guys hanging out together and doing stupid shit and insulting each other but the truth is, deep down, you can tell they genuinely care about each other. That makes it fun to watch.

So many of the shows that have been patterned on the old Top Gear just don't seem to get that. They can get the cars and do the stunts but unless they can find three good friends who happen to be talented film makers and presenters they are going to miss it every time.

A lot of hate for this not being Top Gear, but consider how recently they've started doing these. This is the third "Car Trek", which maybe equates to six total Top Gear cheap car challenges? They're not taking more than a week to film these, the Top Gear guys got more experience in cheap car challenges because they'd do a couple every series. As someone who's been watching from the start, they've gotten noticeably better since the first series, as has the production quality. Last series definitely fell apart in the middle, so let's see if they can keep this one together.

I also think they aren't any more scripted than the Grand Tour or TG; watching the Grand Tour, most of the set piece and expository scenes are scripted and the in-car/action scenes are off the cuff. That seems to be the case here, the difference being that James/Richard/Jeremy are much better off the cuff than Ed/Freddy/Tyler, thus making everything the Yotubers say seem more forced and scripted.
