lesson to us from your word that we can make application to your lives and again that others may see christ through the lies that we live we pray that your will be done in all things that you forgive us when we sin in jesus name amen our first time this morning will be number one again that's him number one [Applause] is survived is [Music] us [Music] [Music] is [Music] i am our next thing this morning will be number nine again that's him number nine let us sing worthy of praises [Applause] blessings [Music] and foreign worthy oh is oh [Music] glory [Music] worthy [Music] number 176 after we sing this on we'll have our scripture reading and then have the opportunity to take the lord's supper let us sing why did my savior [Music] oh is [Music] why did oh is oh [Laughter] for me for me [Applause] jesus comes oh he gave this precious life for me for me so in preparation for partaking the lord's supper this morning i'll be reading from mark chapter 15 verses 15 through 25 mark 15 15-25 so pilate wanted to gratify the crowd released barabbas to them and he delivered jesus after he had scourged him to be crucified then the soldiers led him away into the hall called praetorium and they called together the whole garrison and they clothed him with purple and they twisted a crown of thorns put it on his head and began to salute him hell king of the jews then they struck him on the head with a reed and spat on him and bowing the knee they worshipped him and when they had mocked him they took the purple off him put his own clothes on him and let him out to crucify him then they compelled a certain man simon a serenian the father of alexander and rufus as he was coming out of the country and passing by to bury his cross and they brought him to the place golgotha which is translated place of a skull then they gave him wine mingled with myrrh to drink but he did not take it and when they crucified him they divided his garments casting lots for them to determine what every man should take now it was the third hour and they crucified him let's all give thanks for the bread our father in heaven we thank you for this first day of the week for this opportunity we have to surround this table to reflect back to the love that christ had as he was nailed to the cross now each of us that partake of this bread which symbolizes christ's body do so in a manner acceptable to thee christ's name we pray amen wow uh all right let's all give thanks for the cup and like manner heavenly father we thank you for this fruit of the vine which symbolizes christ's blood as we hang up on the cross may we each look back and remember the love that he had for us partake of this in a manner acceptable and pleasing in our sight christ's name we pray amen uh do separate and apart from the lord's supper we now take this opportunity to give back as we've been stored let's pray please my father in heaven we are so thankful for each and every blessing you give us father both the physical blessings of our homes our jobs our families but also the spiritual blessings we pray father now that as we give back as we have been prospered it will do so with a cheerful heart and these funds might be used to glorify thy name christ's name we pray amen [Music] let's sing [Music] is is i'll sing the world may turn against him [Applause] my friends jesus is is salvation is [Music] jesus jesus peace scripture reading before the lesson this morning be taken from first corinthians chapter 3 verses 3 through 6. that's first corinthians chapter 3 verses three through six and i'll be reading from the king james version for ye are yet carnal for whereas there is among you envian and strife and divisions are ye not carnal and walk as men for while one saith i am of paul and another i am of apollos are ye not carnal who then is paul and who is apollos but ministers by whom he believed even as the lord gave to every man i have planted apollos watered but god gave the increase problems are an ever-present reality for everyone who attempts to interact with others however problems are not really the problem how we react to and handle the problems often becomes more of an issue than the problems themselves one of the worst and least effective methods to handle problems is to blow up everything into a mountain or to reduce everything to a molehill what do you mean the smallest of issues ought not to become a mountain while matters of heaven or hell must never be lessened to a molehill have we all forgotten that we are god's husbandry we are god's building well we hope not we're continuing our study of first corinthians today we've made it to first corinthians chapter three and first corinthians three is all about the new testament temple which is the church of christ the far-reaching problems of division and quarrels introduced in chapter one continue through this chapter and in fact go all throughout chapter four our sermon this morning is entitled we are laborers together with god we'll be in first corinthians chapter three and there are three main things that we want to talk about this morning in first corinthians three verses one through four here we're going to notice the problem and the problem is worldliness immaturity paul used the term carnal but he also mentions words like envy strife and division now spiritual maturity is made manifest at least in part through the ability to work out difficulties at the congregational level without anyone sinking further and further into the wilds of the devil now in order for such to occur the gospel and that by that we mean the written and confirmed new testament must have the final say in all matters notice first corinthians 3 and verse 1 the text says and i brethren notice he still uses this term brethren to indicate the kinship the camaraderie the blood bond that they had together in christ and i brethren could not speak unto you as unto spiritual the idea of spiritual here is not so much inspired as it is mature but as unto carnal even as unto babes in christ so the wisdom of this world and here's the overall idea does not lead to spiritual maturity in fact as we'll see it contributes to spiritual immaturity verse number two says i have fed you with milk and not with me think about that statement i have fed you with milk and not with me so unity in the church christ crucified inspiration of the holy spirit what are those matters those are matters of milk that's not the strong meat of the word what he's already addressed in chapters one and two that's not the deep things of the bible these are very basic very simple things that the first century church of christ and corinth had obviously missed i have fed you with milk and not with meat why for hitherto you were not able to bear it and here's the sad part neither yet now are ye able they're not ready to move on to spiritual maturity because they're immature they'd refuse it seems on the one hand to grow up at least as on the whole of the congregation verse 3 for ye are yet carnal you're immature you're worldly for whereas there is among you envying and strife and divisions are you not carnal are you not immature are you not worldly and walk as men what's the answer to that question uh yeah yeah they were demonstrating it now notice the word envyings that is misguided zeal in other words it was pain felt at the success of others do we still have that when someone gets a promotion on their job how do we feel should be me not them that's endings it's pain at other success when we might see a brother or sister who's financially well off they cheated for it did they that's that's fallen under the category of endings and that's a sign of spiritual immaturity that's a problem notice he also says strife strife always places the desires of self above the needs of others that's where strife comes from where the desires of self are more important than the needs of others know what you're going to have strife but he also used another word didn't he divisions divisions is disunion and here's what's interesting about envyings strife and divisions they're all mentioned in galatians 5 and verse 20. now the works of the flesh are manifest backing up to verse 19 and you know how that concludes in verse 21 the day which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of god now you don't see it by those words but you'll see emulations you'll see seditions and then strife is still strife so these are more than just minor problems these are sin issues that are going to cost these brethren their soul if they continue in them verse number 4 for while one saith i am of paul and another i am of apollos are you not carnal are you not immature are you not worldly well the answer is yeah if that's the way they were acting then they were carnal they were immature they were worldly now think about that statement it appears that paul and apollos got along just fine there was no there were no problems there was no ending strive for division among paul and apollo so why was it in the church why was it there why hadn't this church overcome these type problems and in fact we'd go back before that and say why were they even there in the first place they didn't get it from paul they didn't get it from apollos they didn't get it from cephas and they sure didn't get it from jesus did they oh no so many times even among god's people among the sanctified among the church we let the world creep in among us and then it reflects in our actions when we act immature and just like the world rather than acting like the sanctified in christ jesus beware beware brethren what's the lesson we can learn from this we believe the lesson for us would be that concept of separation we must demonstrate separation from sin in order to live forever know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of god be not deceived neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor effeminate nor abusers of themselves with mankind nor thieves nor covetous nor drunkards nor revilers nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of god first corinthians 6 9-10 now think with me just for a second he's already talking to citizens of the kingdom of heaven wasn't he so what's the kingdom there the kingdom there is the ultimate resting place of the kingdom which is heaven itself first corinthians 15 24 so the idea is this even as members of the church if we live like the world don't expect to go to heaven so we have to come out from that foolishness and leave the foolishness of the world out there in the world don't bring it in among god's people the second part of the chapter is in verses 5-13 the idea here is the perception by that we mean labor in the lord is put in its proper perspective to me at least this is a very intriguing section of scripture question does the salvation of a gospel preacher rest in the faithfulness of those converted by the message he proclaimed well we'll see the answer to that is no but when someone he influenced for the benefit of their soul falls away the pain felt by the preacher or whomever it was that was involved in the conversion is much like a burn it stings it's not very pleasant notice verses five and six text says who then is paul and who is apollos but ministers but servants by whom or through whom ye believed even as the lord gave to every man i have planted apollos watered but god gave the increase now paul had planted what he had planted the gospel the seed of the kingdom acts chapter 18 apollos came and watered that seed you can see that from acts 19 and verse number one but who is paul who is apollos all they are are servants they are ministers of the true and living god so to whom should all the glory go all the glory should go to the one who gave the increase did paul give the increase he did not did apollos give the increase he did not who gave the increase it is god who gave the increase and to god be the glory notice verse number seven so then neither is he that planet that's paul anything that is anything special to write home about neither is he that water that's apollos he's nothing to write home about all they did is preach god's word the power was not in them the power is in whom in god through his word notice it so then neither is he that planteth anything neither he that watereth but but who who's the important one who receives the glory and the honor and the praise but god that giveth the increase so the exaltation or degradation of preachers is pointless what have they been doing in corinth i'm a paul i'm apollos i'm of cephas i'm of christ what point were they trying to prove paul is nailing that home saying why are you focused on that so to puff them up or run them in the dirt what's the point all those guys think about this we're on the same team they were all on the same team and they had taught these people and others give the glory to god to god be the glory notice verse number eight now he that planteth who is that in this context paul and he that watereth are one i wonder about our pentecostal friends who believe there's only one member of the godhead they'll use those passages that say god is one and say say it says one one means one well paul and paulo's the same person no paul was paul and apollos was who he's apollos but yet notice the text says now he that planteth and he that watereth are one so one means united it means harmonious it means they're on the same team why is there division when the two guys that are mentioned are on the same team now either planet and he that watereth are one they're united they're together and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor that reward ultimately has to do with heaven first peter 1 3 to 5. now there is a sense in which rewards and things of that nature happen here but ultimately he's talking about on the other side notice verse number nine for we are laborers together he that planteth and he that watereth are one we are laborers together now notice what the text doesn't say the text doesn't say we are laborers together for god though that is somewhat true isn't it but god does his part we are laborers together with god so inspired men were on the side of god and the church and whatever they preached or wrote by inspiration was to help help for what purpose help everyone get to heaven notice it we are laborers together with god ye that's you plural that means all y'all in southern vernacular ye are god's husbandry ye are god's building where's the emphasis there it's on god so the church is god's field and god's architecture god is the one who established the church god is the one who established the better covenant with better promises observe verses 10 and 11 according to the grace of god which is given unto me as a wise master builder i have laid the foundation and another buildeth their own but let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon for other foundation can no man lay then that is laid what is the foundation paul which is jesus christ paul had laid the correct foundation in corinth true true so everyone else needed to make certain that the building on the foundation of jesus christ was up to code and correct what happens if you build and it's not up to code um you'll have some problems what if you build and it's cockeyed well if it's not what if it's just some plum and not plum plum what's going to happen then you're going to have some problems now think about this year god's building you're god's husbandry okay you're his field years architecture jesus christ is the foundation so there's no problem with the foundation there's no problem at all with the foundation but how had the church at corinth demonstrated them building on that foundation it was not up to code because there was envying strife divisions they were carnal they were backbiting they were fighting we're going to see all kinds of problems were going on here in corinth but the overall one through these first four chapters is they were trusting in human wisdom and not trusting in divine revelation from god notice verses 12 and 13. now if any man build upon this foundation what is this foundation it's jesus christ [Music] gold silver precious stones those are things that are designed to last but there's also three that that are liable to be burned would pay stubble every man's work shall be what made manifest now the problem's not the foundation the problem is how it's been built on what materials has been used for the day shall declare it because it shall be revealed by fire and the fire shall try test prove every man's work of what sort it is now these are illustrations really of the converts and some make it and some don't think about the harmony between what we read here in the parable of the sower think about that where was the problem was the problem with the sower nope was the problem with the seed nope where was the problem in those various hearts of men true and the one that brought forth fruit and hundredfold was the honest and good heart now the new king james version makes the day does it is it capitalized there in the new king james version because i believe it is at least in the one i looked at new king james version capitalizes day and which makes it seem to be the judgment day and that's probably correct now that's an example of a a translation more than it is i guess i should say an interpretation more than it is a translation but that's probably correct now it could be the fire of trials okay as the the world puts heat on us what are we are we going to be like gold silver precious stones are we going to make it through this or are we like wood hay and stubble and just going to be burned up okay so that's probably the idea notice verses 14-15 if any man's work abide what is the work seems to be those who are converted built upon the foundation of jesus christ if any man's work abide which he hath built there upon he shall receive a war a reward verse 15. if any man's work shall be burned he shall suffer loss it's going to hurt it's going to sting but he himself shall be saved yet is so by or through fire now the salvation of gospel preachers or anyone else for that matter is not based upon the faithfulness of those taught by them now that's still doesn't change the meaning of the text because it's difficult to see those we preach to leave the faith whether or not the preacher was the one who placed you under the water if we love people the way that we're out to it bothers us everyone to see people not make it through this life faithful in christ and here's the the reality when the judgment day comes it's going to be very plain it's going to be very obvious who was in it for the long haul and who was not regardless of whether or not we sat in the pews or didn't sit in the pews or anything else above below or between so what so what the application for us is the concept of salvation the power has always been the message the power has never been in the messenger okay we kind of got that confused today because still we have some of the same problems with aligning ourselves with our favorite preachers why why who are they but ministers where's the power always been it's never been in the preacher it's never been in the messenger it's always been in christ through the message moreover brethren i declare unto you the gospel which i preached unto you which also you've received and wherein you stand by which also you're saved if you keep in memory what i preached unto you unless you have believed in vain for i delivered unto you first of all that which i also received how that christ died for our sins who died for our sins it was not paul it was not apollos it was not brock or anyone else how that christ died for our sins according to the scriptures and that he was buried and that he rose again the third day according to what according to the scriptures do we see the harmony of the scriptures and the savior of the message and the messiah so our perception perhaps needs to go back where it needs to go and where it should have been the whole time on christ on the message delivered to us once for all time by means of the gospel the third part of the chapter is in verses 14 to 21 or 16 to 21 i should say yeah i had that all wrong you'd think my powerpoint man would made that right but he didn't so here it is that's wrong i told you right i wrote it wrong go figure verses 16 to 23 the idea here is the purity that is the temple of god that is the church of christ must be pure and holy so the second point was from verses 5 to 15 then the third point is from verses 16 through 23. i got that all wrong you'd think and i looked over this too that just shows you you can't edit your own work you can but you're probably gonna miss stuff now since the lord's church is the temple comprised of saints who were to be sanctified and set apart for god's uses sin of any sort kinder type was not to be named even once among them now the wisdom of the world had gotten the church into trouble so they had to get back to god's wisdom in the scripture notice verses 16 and 17 because these really are an excellent summarization of the entire epistle know ye not you all already know this don't you that would be probably the best way to express that in english know ye not that ye are the temple of god and that the spirit of god dwelleth rules reigns has dominion over you if any man defile or destroy the temple of god what's going to happen what is the temple of god it's the church him shall god destroy why for the temple of god is holy which now what do you notice about temple here it's in italics which temple ye are that's true but the meaning there is they were supposed to be holy they were supposed to be sanctified they were supposed to be set apart and indeed they had not demonstrated that on the whole had they no they hadn't so the christians at corinth in the first century were defiling they were destroying god's temple by what by their divisions by their envying by their strife and as we move forward through this epistle that wasn't it they had other problems that were going on there too so they needed to stop that stop it stop you're the temple of god the temple of god is holy and the way they had been behaving was not holy it was not sanctified it was not set apart and notice that we the church what are we we're the temple of god and the spirit of god dwelleth how does the spirit dwell in us what does that word mean he rules he reigns he has dominion over us as we walk in the light as god is in the light it's not some type of a physical bodily possession that he overrides our spirit because the spirit was dwelling or should have been dwelling in them but where they were feeling that were they reflecting the spirit's rule reign and dominion over their lives no so what were they doing they were living out of harmony with the spirit's teaching so when does the spirit dwell in us when we live in harmony with the spirit's teaching not too difficult to understand we don't think notice verse number 18 let no man deceive himself is it possible to deceive himself the answer to that is yes so let's don't do that if any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world what does he say let him become a fool that he may be wise now how do we become a fool notice paul's play on the uses of wise and fool or wisdom and foolishness things along those lines how he's played on those words so we become a fool protect quotes if you want to by accepting and obeying the foolishness again in quotes if you want to look at it that way of gospel preaching now how had they been wise they'd been wise in the ways of the world and what had happened they had defiled the temple of god so let's become fools how do we become fools accept and obey and abide in the foolishness of gospel preaching that's how to become wise notice verses 19 and 20. why would we do that for here's why the wisdom of this world what is it what is it really it's foolishness with god for it is written seems to come from job 5 and verse 13. he taketh the wise in their own craftiness and again that seems to imply it is written that seems to reference psalm 94 11. the lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise that they are what they're empty they're futile they're vain now all the lord's enemies in time will be exposed and revealed as frauds think about this think think deeply about this but quickly because we're always in a hurry think quickly about this how had the church at corinth been living they perhaps have been living wise by the world standards but what was it really it was foolishness okay now in view of the day the great day of judgment the day of trial whatever you would like for it to be when it becomes manifested everything is plain was it wise to reject the teaching of the gospel and to live according to the wisdom of the world oh no so let's don't be revealed as frauds let's not be wise by the world standards because the wisdom of the world is what with god what is it really it's foolishness it's nothing notice verse 21 this is a plain statement of fact therefore what's the conclusion let no man glory in men stop putting paul on the pedestal stop putting apollos on the pedestal now that doesn't mean stomp them in the ground and disrespect them that's another extreme that has to be avoided don't put cephas on the pedestal they're not that's peter they're not the emphasis look at it therefore let no man glory and men why for all things are yours that's a plain statement of fact and all things here means revealed by inspiration they had plenty of access to the truth and despite that they were carnal they were immature they were worldly they were again to endings strife divisions they had access to know better and should have known better verse 22 make it plain whether paul or apollos or cephas they knew the truth about those guys they knew they were but ministers they knew that or the world they knew the truth about the world or life or death they knew the truth about life and death or things present they knew how to live here or things to come they knew what was on the other side all things or rather all are yours meaning what they knew this so all these inspired preachers of the first century were on the same side and they preached the truth as they were inspired and i've always found it amazing if you could get all those guys in the room at the same time wonder what they had said they'd seen how the church was acting and say peter they get that from you no they didn't get that from me apollos did they get that from you no they didn't get that from me paul did they get that from you what's the answer to that they didn't get that from any inspired man ever anywhere and if the same thing goes on in this congregation today where'd we get that did we get that from the inspired text of the bible well of course we didn't but if it's here whence came it it came from out there didn't it it came from the world leave the world in the world let's be the church of christ and act like it verse 23 and ye are christ's and christ is god's notice this christ is of the father right did christ act like the father did he behave in harmony with his father's will yes notice what he said ye the church are christ's question had they been acting like jesus had they noticed the similarity christ is god's he's of the father right he acted like the father he talked like the father he behaved in harmony with the father's will here's the church the church at current the church is of christ but they were do you see something wrong here they were supposed to be this but they were this they were ever which way except the way that they needed to be so there comes a reminder from time to time christ is god's meaning he acts and obeys and abides in authority in harmony with his authority what about the church we're christ's are we behaving in harmony with the new testament tough question isn't it indeed it is what's the application application for us is that word sanctification the temple of god is holy we are that temple therefore what we are holy you know we often quote first corinthians 6 9 and 10 but sometimes we'll stop it and before we get to verse 11. no though you're not the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of god be not deceived neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor feminine or abusers themselves mankind nor thieves nor covetous nor drunkards nor revilers nor extortion or shall inherit the kingdom of god but then pick up at verse 11 and such were were some of you but you're washed you're sanctified you're justified in the name of the lord jesus and by or through the spirit of our god first corinthians 6 11 shows that no matter what our past has been it doesn't have to stay that way you know they've been guilty some terrible things in corinth hadn't they fornicators idolaters adulterers effeminate homosexuals they've been guilty of some things even by today's standards that are really really bad but did they come out of it yes they came out of it and when they came out of it they knew where to turn they knew where to go they knew what to do to be sanctified to be set apart they knew it but they had forgotten it and perhaps they hadn't gone back into those things but they had also gone into sin hadn't they envyings strife divisions works of the flesh galatians 5 and verse number 20. what a magnificent chapter of the bible well what can we learn overall jesus is the solution for all problems in the church rather than trying to line up ourselves with this preacher or that preacher let's all follow christ let's all live in harmony with new testament teaching and leave the world in its mess out there as a mess that it is all inspired writers of the new testament are in eternity but when we preach their words we are speaking the same thing as if paul himself were standing here and when he was in harmony when he spoke as an inspired man it was as if jesus himself were standing there the lord is inviting you to be sanctified to be washed to be justified has that happened have you become a new testament christian you're invited what must i do to be saved hear the gospel acts 18 8 believe the gospel acts 16 31 repent of sin acts 17 30. confess jesus christ to be the son of god acts 8 37 and be immersed in water for the remission of sins that's how to become a christian then what then it's time to behave as a christian it's time to act like the temple of god and the temple of god is it's
