Washington Redskins Crush Dallas Cowboys 37-10 in Final Game at RFK Stadium 12-22-96

this is a Fox Sports presentation today we say goodbye to one of the great NFL stadiums of all time a stadium with images that cannot be forgotten thirty men together can't lose silver go straight back to being what told you positive great names great memories regular season comes so does the 35 year history of RFK Stadium if a stadium could only talk the RFK Stadium site between the Dallas be a part of the goodbye to this great arena but it's an honor to be included yeah it's a real honor and I think right now there's no place that I would rather be right now than right here at RFK Stadium and because we've seen so many great players and so many great games here and I know it has to be a special meeting for you because the first game that was ever played here you kicked the ball off in the first game you also scored the first extra point and you made the first field goal here at that time it was DC Stadium that was a long long time ago they've got one more to play today the Dallas Cowboys against the Washington Redskins doesn't mean much to Washington but what kind of game you think it'll be well you know the Redskins are getting frustrated I mean at one point they were seven and one and another point they're eight and three and and they thought that this was going to be a meaningful game and they're frustrated that they're playing their last game here in our FK and it really doesn't mean anything now on the other side to the Cowboys there early in the week Barry Switzer said is like a bye week and - took it back that he is going to rest a lot of his players today Troy Aikman isn't starting at quarterback Wade Wilson will be the starting quarterback and Matt Smith isn't even active today so we're not going to see all the Cowboys but Barry Switzer did say said we want to rest some players we're looking towards next week in the playoff but we want to win today and you know John perhaps in the history of the NFL certainly in modern history there has been no rivalry like the one between these two teams the chant went up just moments ago we want Dallas we want Dallas will they're going to get them and the Redskins are going to get the ball first as baño and and the Dallas Cowboy defense has gotten more aggressively going to more blitzes now without Leon Latin Charles Haley three wide receivers Michell life will not be enough for a first down but it might get him in field go away I think it did get them in field goal range and and and one thing that has to be a big plus for for North corner one is EO is getting that Simmons back there that right tackle bit he does have good pass protection today when the cowboy is really better than that flea-flicker thing which was kind of just a mixed up play D the cowboys really haven't gotten close to Gus gonna get the Blitz here and he just runs over there you see the Blitz right there he just saw it felt it and ran away from it yep and by getting away where they blitz to that means that the other side has to be a soft side first and ten arrested yeah when the Redskins were really going well Terry Allen was going well and he was a with score and touch that in the fact Terry Allen has won for 18 touchdowns this year that's kind of the good news for the Redskins and he's been such a big part of their offense but the other nose you see the first eight in the last seven games that kind of tailed off there as the whole team did but the bad news is he's a free agent after the season and I'm not sure that they're going to get him side thirty-five making you just get the idea that the Redskins are know how to play against the Cowboys I remember last year they beat them twice here's Carrie Allen right here that the north learner knows this team and he knows what to do against him you know and he just knows it those little things underneath those crossing routes you know different guys have given the problem with that that one there was deflected watch his pad it's going to be deflected right here just changes a little right there just do not but it didn't make any differences still got to Terry Allen play against this team detached but there's a bride one see after you get some linebackers and it's getting tougher and tougher to run down in the goal line area to the bank have to get that up toilet paper toilet paper but I don't know it looks like rhythm it's a it's it's a good machine that's a different kind of paper you got your basic toilet paper you got your basic adding machine paper different your styles of papers when they when they score that they throw out in in here you just got sort of a a damp feeling in the field when you walk up into our booth when you came here as a player as I did way back in 1961 you had that feeling of intimacy you were close to the fans you were right there with him they got to know you you got to know them whether they hated you or whether they liked you you were right there with him there's no place like it all in those fans it meant everything and the burgundy and gold did respond with a 3710 thumping of the Cowboys as Terry Allen becomes the most prolific single-season rusher in Washington history in the final pro 14 years believe me it was a special day something I'll never forget the game may have ended but the excitement continues at the stadium and that's where chick Hernandez is right now in the middle of Brooke I can tell you right now if the crowd is still here and still cheer for this man Dexter Manley Dexter an emotional day for a lot of the ballplayers a cheering your name now what kind of day was this for you whether it was one of the greatest days of my life I am so elated right now because this is a very sad day but as a good day too as well because I come here and Washington DC with the calls and I've had a lot of ups and downs in my life and I know that I know that I can beat this pain in a crusade to fight this thing an addiction and overcome illiteracy so I'm Jelena calls today at a mission and so I would like to have hope responses embossing I know that you know you're they are demand and support and I'm looking for you and I need your support as we look at the video today it was just family and then to go out on the field with all the guys and fortunately in our community we have gotten to know the sounds and the sunnies of the years before us Jeff as you know and then we played together the gels the hogs the odd monks and then now I'm playing with this younger group so envy me okay this is just great now let's go back to that tunnel you were talking about before we went out on the field and we're introduced to the RFK crowd for one last time it was almost like a class reunion everybody mixing mingling telling stories and I love what one person said yeah oh you're the only person dressed like a football player well yeah you know it was a great fitting Jeff you know obviously I haven't retired yet and certainly I will but to be close to you guys and yet to be with this team is still trying to win it was a bit of special moment for me I'll just tell you that bottom line I felt great being with you guys and as well as playing in the game and I'm very pleased with today obviously our FK with we did not let our let off people down but it certainly was a damper that we didn't make the pearls but anything less than the playoffs this I'll take this and I'm very proud of this team very proud of know of and this staff will work very hard for three years and allowed me to be a part of it and I'm actually looking forward to the next season I think that we can get it done I think we really have what it takes to do it and you know you kind of want to apologize to the fans but hey it just happens that way but it's been a great year any way I can find your first year running down Tony Dorsett I could not believe what I had witnessed and believe me a lot of fans around here have seen that many times since certainly a play that I'll never forget I didn't think anybody could physically catch Tony Dorsett but you showed me something well you notice the by Jeff when you get dropped at the number one pick you've got to show the fans that you know that's something about you they say and why did you pick this milk guy from Texas and I and everybody know I don't like to have been recognized as a covering cornerback but hey I'll take that it was great and the timing was great for it Darrell we appreciate you coming by you know you're a guy that we've been able to count on whether the team wins or loses and that's not easy to do sometimes after a loss but you're a true professional and a classy guy we appreciate there's both Fox 5 and all of our media local is all right with me baby ok thank you Darrell grab a good Christmas done - 1983 to the present five-time Pro Bowler four-time winner of the I'll tell you what and I was on the field waiting for you guys to come out getting high fives from the players I've had such goosebumps it was phenomenal it was terrific well you hate that the Redskins couldn't have pulled something off like this a month ago I tell you what as a former player I could only imagine what was going through the players minds seeing all the former players come back pay tribute to this Stadium one more time I know the players did not want to let this group down you were introduced along with your fellow hogs jacobi grim may start dean walker and warren let's show the folks would that look like and tell me how you felt as that thing was your never doubt if you have never came out of RFK Stadium and had your name introduced to 55 screaming fanatics there's nothing to compare to it and certainly you do it one more time it's something that you will never forget Steve it's an honor that you know your words cannot express exactly how you feel about it the only thing I can tell you that the fans and the players had a certain bond that only hope that we can really duplicate when we go over to the news place I mean it was certainly special a series of great players and teams and equally great fans it was a special place a special place that is listed for 35 years and the only thing about it we have to leave that we'll have our memories forever though our postgame show and our special look hail to RFK will continue right after this [Music] look at the skins and rfk you know in his day Bobby Mitchell was a great running back and receiver first with the Cleveland Browns than of course with the Redskins in 83 Mitchell and teammate Sonny Jurgensen were both inducted into the Hall of Fame Mitchell story is poignant although not often told James Brown recently sat down with Bobby Mitchell for a very revealing look inside the man but other people who might feel the strangest about the last game you played at RFK one can for any stranger thing you what kind of reactions will you have where you feel today and the last game is played there what does RFK oldc stadium bring about it any motions in the air well it would be very emotional probably more for me than most other people in the sense that to all the negative things that happened to me happen there all the good things that have to me happen there even today after many many years of not playing at RFK was just going through the tone rang in all the negative things I'm so negative well because that is the way I admit it first coming out of that dugout meeting the rich in fans who wasn't ready to accept a black star and the booze and the names and the cat calls all happened there initially and so I don't feel comfortable even today coming through that tone I expect to hear it it's on my mind I'm already tighten up and I'm in a business suit and yet I expected and I'm not comfortable until I get exit to the football field and once I get over there to feel then I hear the cheers the screaming in heart and I can see the premises and things within my mind during the early years was a tough for you to make a mistake and the footbath fear in terms of family action yes that's where I got in trouble with the black fan I had problem with the white fan because it wasn't ready for the black star anything that did I must be doing because I think I'm somebody or issuing out or you know those types of things and on the other side with the black fan I had to be this black Superman I couldn't make a mistake I couldn't drop a ball a conformal I can't do anything wrong on Sunday and you know in this game the football players out there that make you do some things you don't want Authority and so that was difficult so I had I didn't have either side I had him but I didn't know I had him during that period so what did I do I went home closed my door I closed it all off the Reds get put their top offseason acquisition to work no I'm speed throws the ball to Bobby Mitchell leave behind everybody for an 81 yard TD play early you asked me what does RFK mean to me when I see RFK close it closes the negative it closes the positive and I realize that I don't walk into a new stadium the new stadium in Maryland with the same enthusiasm and caring because all my life is back there at RFK but I'll say one thing the good and the good feeling I feel about being a Washingtonian the good feeling I feel about being a the good feeling I feel about Wriston fans and my friends that I've acquired in this city tells me that if I was asked tomorrow would you do it again my answer would be predicated on the fact of where I am at this point and what I've gained and what I've acquired from all the people and in that sense I have to say I'd have to do it all very interesting perspective one that you don't often hear one you don't often hear and believe me people like Bobby Mitchell the Sonny Jurgensen the Billy Kilmer's the Pat Fisher's than many horses these are the guys that paved the road for the Redskins present and certainly during my career these are the guys that laid the groundwork that allowed this organization to be successful fortunately for us and Joe Gibbs Air we were able to carry that and a couple notches higher we'll see what happens with North Turner anybody that's ever stepped into that stadium want a Bergen Engel Jersey you have to feel something special in your heart today even the fans what an emotional day it was our special look hail to RFK continues right after this I have to tell you that growing up in this town this is a day when journalistic objectivity goes right out the window I got myself a piece of turf right before I left the field right around the 25 yard line and I'll keep this forever and never forget this place RFK was a terrific place you've got to us to show on a little plaque I'm sure that I ingested five pounds out in 410 so I'll have my own taste of RFK in a different way though and so 35 years and 278 games later the Redskins leave a lot more than a stadium behind for the folks who've been following the team all their lives RFK was a shrine to the Redskins to pro football to legends and to heroes their names were jergensen and Taylor Riggins and monk brown and manly the Redskins will live on and pro football in the nation's capital will continue but make no mistake about it folks there will never be another RFK Stadium I'm Steve buck ads for Jeff Bostic Chick Hearn and us all of us here at Fox
