[Music] Garrett keep him here they talked about this Superboy I expect that kind of effort spectacle teams let's hit it rolling now certain this thing today nothing gets away from us it started today okay [Applause] [Applause] right doctor for the air ball is loose on the turf in the den in 1991 the Washington Redskins were more than simply the league's most successful franchise they were the perfect football machine and overwhelming for some brutal officials the past I picked off our ball game is the 42 esteem to the 45 to the 15 years I'd like 4000 the left side mr. Parkinson no NFL team won more games or for more often than the Washington Redskins let's go let's go baby in the back I've moved to change fire indeed got a bat down there in Florida let's get there go strip and I'm looking left all the way in the end zone gonna there catch artbook touchdown Washington Rick with power and precision Washington rolled to division and conference titles then crush the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl 26 for their third world championship in a decade the quick shot roses the near flight to minor in the five dice the quarter touchdown Washington Redskins going deep he's got Clark in the endzone touchdown Washington [Music] the World Championship has been secured picked to win it all before the season even began they have fulfilled the promise world champions [Music] [Music] [Applause] the nation's capital the seat of power the center of government where laws are debated and politics are their own spectator sport in a city where two sides exist on every issue one unifying force brings together all rival factions on Sunday afternoon [Music] [Applause] president doesn't believe the Congress Congress doesn't agree with themselves House doesn't agree with the Senate you have constant fights constant turmoil constant commotion nothing settled everything's up for grabs except the Washington 1991 would be a star spangled season for fans that began on the steamy Sunday evening over Labor Day weekend the opponents were the Detroit Lions when their entire history had never won a game in Washington on this night that losing streak was painfully extended the defense registered its first shutout of the season and the offense buried Detroit in an avalanche of points rolling to the most lopsided winning margin in team history that he goes the points the pass rush going deep from apply to court also unleashed was the newest long-range weapon and Washington's arsenal kick away a low fluttering one Mitchell picks it to the 32 he's after the 40s through it's team to the 45 to the 55 by 44 830 he's gone touchdown Washington but one would be troit that really gave me confidence for the whole season going to the first game and return the punt but touchdown and something I had never done really until I got into the pros oh I had never returned anything kickoffs up wanting to do that and it just gave me a lot of company me feel that hey dream about chip earned all-pro honors with a league-leading 149 points becoming the first NFL player since 1945 to outscore an entire team all by himself oh Miller's leg became Washington's most lethal weapon and a wild Monday night shootout against archrival Dallas the Redskins quarterly on a mark rippin to Jimmy Johnson touchdown pass but the Cowboys responded and surged with 21 to 10 second period advantage [Music] the disconsolate Redskins didn't stay sad for long as lo Miller rode to the rescue with a 410 of long-range field goal it was a tough course game of Dallas and another of our big rivalry I just want to go up to help team out as best as I can but as I game went on and I started you know realizing what I was doing and you know I felt so comfortable out there and how I was having a good game it gives you a lot of confidence that money make game I hope not alive but you know you have to have the mental aspect of the game you have to be able to go out there and I'm confident yourself that you're going to make every kick and I think that's my way you'll be successful low Miller drilled a pair of 50 yarders and one quarter alone an NFL record and two more touchdowns by Art Monk and Gerald Riggs clinched to come back with snapping Washington's six-game losing streak in Monday night game [Applause] the points would be far less plentiful for the opposition the following week when the Redskins returned home to host unbeaten Phoenix oh yeah the Cardinals had not won in Washington since 1978 but now appeared cocky and confident taking over so right from the start don't get anything to bring on one two three five Phoenix was hopelessly overmatched as the relentless defense chalked up his second shutout in his many home games one especially inspired performer with good reason was Charles ma'am number 71 baby Cameron did you read this or today 6:46 as well my family one more SEC though I got two kids after that I'm through man got the second sack for his offspring sharing the spotlight with number 58 linebacker Wilber Marshall who picked off a pair of intercept I just kick for the pass again looking looking fires it out all the middle is picked off flipper Marshalls got into the second time of the 48 makes the pitch shot down to the 30 to the 25 cut back to the 40 piece of the 15 to the 10 down Washington risk is what a beautiful return while the defense notched its first four of the season Washington's hogs were doing their part to keep the points plentiful on offense I goes down here and he just takes off when your ass believes best offensive line showcase textbook blocking is better Geoff Bostick number 53 and number 69 guard marks left guarantees safe passage for running back Ernest fire Griffin pulse was gonna go chief got a man wide open runs underneath it the victory put Washington alone at the top of the NSE [Applause] because it all fits on the renegade if we can work the fancy game it's gonna work out work out this little trouble was anticipated when the Redskins journeyed to Cincinnati to play the windless Bengals and by midway through the third quarter Washington enjoyed a comfortable twenty seven to ten advance back up to the 40 the 45 M field 50 to the 40 the 35 the 30 he's gone come on down Washington Rex game does it every week but the game quickly became a nail-biter as frustrated coach Joe Gibbs watched his team's lead evaporate during a furious second-half fangled comeback i 227 with barely five minutes remaining the Redskins called six consecutive running plays on their game-winning scoring drive a drive capped by Gerald Riggs third touchdown of the afternoon motion and off the rigs go on right side untouched ended up and zone touchdown Washington right in matters true far less suspenseful the following week back at RFK when division rival Philadelphia came calling in 1991 the Eagles posted the finest defense in the league and one of the best in NFL history but a nationwide Monday night TV audience saw Washington encounters few problems moving the ball all evening in fact both touchdowns appeared almost embarrassingly easy doctors grip of the past deep drop close it up I can look at the five rippen hands diviner a little a gutless Shay had a waltzes at the end zone for a touchdown Washington indeed the best defense on the field was wearing burgundy and gold Washington held the Eagles to less than 100 total yards and only four first sounds while posting an astounding third straight shutout at home no defensive unit in team history had ever begun a season in such dominant fashion [Music] they call themselves the national defense a defense that even Pentagon generals would have been hard-pressed to equal [Music] we've had some obstacles to overcome and our defense instead of going in there with their heads down because you've turned the ball over on a either special team or an offensive turnover they've gone in there if the attitude a these they're not going to get in the endzone they're playing about as good as anyone's played in the league this year it began with a defensive line of Eric Williams Tim Johnson Fred's ghost Jason but jumpy gathers Bobby Wilson Marcus cook and all-pro Charles Mann they blended wild-eyed ferocity with a single-minded discipline of well school professionals you're making thousands of dollars to play a football game we played as little kids when we weren't getting any all you're getting was a pat on the back from your coach or a little pat on the behind from your player fellow players saying good job or whatever and that was enough now we're getting paid you better be ready the Redskins play defense with a purpose a specific task for every man nowhere was this more evident than at a linebacker where veterans mommy Coleman and Matt Millen split time with young role players Andre Collins Kurt Gouveia and Raven Caldwell a dim star Wilbur Marshall and Washington always seem to have the right players on the field to stop anymore we're just playing good team besides you have eleven guys hustle into the ball you know that's the difference you know that's what teams are scoring on us at home if there's one thing this wasn't the wrestling team 1991's want to do and that's going to be hustling a critical key to the rug skins success came from its league-leading give away take away differential hue secondaries in football were mortal arsonists than the Washington lineup of Martin may you Danny Copeland Brad Edwards Sidney Johnson al Boyd Mays Clarence pond AJ Johnson Alvin Walton and Terry hold among the Redskins solid core of defensive backs is one player who can rightfully be labeled a superstar the NFL's past this man is energized by enormous confidence and an occasional chocolate chillin - okay make it run fast when you have a lot of speed like I do normally should I say most every time I'm faster than my receivers being able to take the top receiver on the team and saying to the other ten guys you guys play over there and I can take this one guy by myself without any help and shut it down me against you and that's when I think I'm the best I'm the opening week right through the post season no unit in football played more consistently than the men of Washington's National Defense unscored on at home and I'm beaten anywhere the Redskins took their perfect record into the snake pit that is Chicago's Soldier Field lying in wait were they always rough in physical bears we're expected to give Washington its sternest test of the young season [Music] good legal blocks and after their assets these are the games that are won or lost in the trenches and right from the start the Redskins seized control of the pips [Music] the defense left Chicago black and blue then turn matters over to the office on often a major elevated Washington successful rushing attack was the presence of wide receiver our mom wasn't bashful about throwing a well-timed downfield block fortunately mom's talents did not end there as he emphatically proved to a bad lead towards Chicago second [Applause] listen back the drop dead fire into the nearside focus wide open touchdown Washington the Bears eventually closed the gap to ten to seven but the defense quickly responded with two fourth-quarter interceptions by Kurt Cobain Fred Stokes the turnovers set up a field goal and another touchdown for Washington's most prolific past catcher [Applause] they're in a coffin there goes Griffith back looking left all the way in the end zone got a man Artbox touchdown Washington red Washington tallied the last score and enjoyed the last laugh as one of only two NFL teams that remained unbeaten the Redskins were beginning to put their own signature on the 1991 season but additional penmanship would be required against the brown such as the task of rewriting the NFL record for longest day our monk reached another milestone the putting one step closer to his inevitable Hall of Fame in detriment Griffin go on to the endzone got smoked in the corner any broken record all right Clark now with 751 career receptions is since Oh times nfl's reception list impressive numbers were posted by the running attack as well gaining a season-high 208 rushing yards and one earnest Byner left the game with a hand injury rookie replacement Ricky Ervin's exploded for the longest run of the Redskins season it's third down six yards to go and Urban's gets the call looking at the middle now breaks it up right tackle to the 40 it's a footrace 30 25 20 15 no other team enjoyed a better run past balance than the Redskins thanks to the efforts of one of the finest offensive lines ever assembled senator Jeff plastic Pro Bowler Marshall erupt in seven-year guard Raleigh McKenzie 11-year Maine's Jewish a along with Russ grill mark addicts and Edson anti TIA Ron Middleton Don Warren Terry or and James Jenkins the Hogs were the NFL's primal force as skilled at pounding as they were at protecting a lot a few last things in life it's physical it's tough other more we actually see guys more let's go to battle and physically stand up for one another and I love that part of it [Music] probably not why the most glamorous position I think offers a one and take pride in what they do and as a group we have five guys out there who are pretty much a team within a team I've enjoyed running behind those guys I think they're one of the best lines in NFL today and they all contribute and they're always when skin runner's further expressed their gratitude with the third-best rushing total in the NSC in his 13th pro season Gerald Riggs number 37 proved that if young horses run fast then old horses know it away no one had a better nose for the goal line than race proven by his team leading 11 rushing touchdowns or the second consecutive season number 21 Ernest Byner faced the Redskins with another thousand yard performance and a trip to the Pro Bowl [Music] only three conference runners gained more yardage and the true importance of being earnest was displayed in his receiving and occasional passing skills [Music] no NFC rookie gain more rushing yards in 1991 than Ricky Ervin's number 32 who provided the perfect injection of speed to Washington's running attack whatever the situation the Redskins back field of Ervin's biner and Riggs could always be counted on to deliver the good I was fine for a week all off the Redskins journeyed to the Jersey Meadowlands to battle the defending world champions the Giants owned a six-game winning streak over Washington a bit of history well understood by the nervous visitors from being seen right Wow do I sing look me yes what about you jobs all right hop [Applause] kamaal Alicia will know scared save it for the road skims appeared to be running scared in the first half as the Giants bullied their way to a 13 to nothing lead Hill gives found little success with the run and nothing but heartache with the past as the normally reliable Gary Clark dropped to certain touchdown the Giants had dominated what an adjustment by Gibbs brought about a positive reversal of fortune [Applause] into the gun went to hogs and out came Mighty Mite Ricky Ervin's this ability to control the line of scrimmage allowed Gary Clark his chance for redemption Crysta throws at the end zone Clark touchdown perfect you know my right one was open was Clark wide open for the touchdown they clinched a win in the most pivotal game of the Redskins season rolling out to the near side is ripping and steps up and throws it long for Clark at the five grabs it touchdown Washington who catches two touchdown for Gary emotional wave must be off that when ex Redskins coach Jack Pardee brought the Oilers in to RFK the following week his goal was to knock off the league's last unbeaten team Washington had turnovers more than anything told the story of the game like fumble loose ball he's got it right got it rest and fall but take away with Washington in position to break a six to six tirely in the fourth quarter an Ernest Byner responded with his longest scoring runner bu I formation and out of the eye at Spiner again on the carry breaks it outside 4015 cut back to the 10 5 touchdown Washington Redskins on a brilliant rough by a pirate with less than two minutes remaining the Oilers rallied to tie takes the snap hands the white he died for a touchdown with the game out of the 13 the Redskins uncharacteristically gave use and a chance to win without the need for overtime the one-yard line right the goal line of the five and the 15 up the middle to the 20 it is a cardinal Apple to football there's a wild scramble Houston says they have it they have been divine providence intervened to keep the Redskins unbeaten good hit is up it's been up there God has written instead of who even this second chance Washington sees the opportunity with an overtime interception by Darryl Greene play the game chip Lowell Miller a chance to put Yuson away for good spot is the 31 a 44 yard kick for the right side high smart cold is good kick is up there's enough to it it's good in overtime the Redskins now sported the best record in football making them an inviting target for brash talking pose such as the Atlanta Falcons and their mouth from the South coach Jerry glass let's go baby well ever go back to you tomorrow babe let's go fourth let's go fourth down a team - look down here Carrie I'm not sure I am writing I'm pointing them up right here boy are you afraid I've been praying your last week so cheeseburgers if the fountains weren't afraid they should have been before the fans had settled into their seats quarterback Mark riffin was already exploiting a tripled Atlanta secondary with relentless regularity any place you looked there was mark Ripon putting points on the scoreboard on the bootlegging slide up to the left side for a touchdown Washington what a fake the Redskins were well on their way to their highest scoring game in 25 years [Music] he's ripping the bass yeah they wanted by open quark touchdown the rich give nothing back on new rock your life going deep on the fly but what call it the 15 can burrow touchdown Washington 16 [Applause] for over 300 yards with this one here goes long wrote it up to the nearside he's going on the run at Clark at the 50:44 833 small class 20 couple to the 15 10 5 touchdown the rights kids hello [Applause] when the last touchdown bomb was finally gathered in mark riffin had accounted for more than 440 passing yards and a record time six touchdown but Rubin and the talented passing trio of the posse were merely warming up the following week the Washington air attack continued its artistry in the Steel City Art Monk Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders enabled the Redskins to clinch a playoff berth by soaring through the air with the greatest of ease [Music] with a key struck going Steve got Clark wide open at the pan I suppose touchdown Washington after another 300 yard performance riffin turned the controls over to Jeff Rutledge but the posse continued to pour it up goes roughly too fast fires it out over the middle got Sanders at the 10 at the 5 touchdown Washington right here they are the posse propose terrific trio of white outs three receivers with speed cutting and toughness from any spot in any formation they pose problems which few defenses are ever fully able to overcome going deep got a man wide open its Clark in a defensive scheme normally you have one great receiver or maybe one or another guys a good receiver but when you have three like the Washington that really told a totally different monster they can't do the same thing they would do a four team only had two great wild receivers it makes them adjusted things they really don't adjust it begins with 12 year veteran Art Monk crunching blocker master of the intermediate zone savior on third and law and the heir apparent to the old-time NFL receiving crowd [Music] monk keeps drives moving while Gary Clark ends them quickly with short routes that suddenly become a long game because 40 is those quick outs two fives he plays with title passes river you receivers get more yardage after the catch then Clark you can stop on a dime then go for the big payday in the end zone and then there is jack-of-all-trades Ricky Sanders blocker ball carrier home run threat he's the key guy in his office now and he plays more than myself an art delivery one one a whiteout and that's Ricky or three wideouts with Ricky he plays the joy the other time the X running back has proven his worth in any role a Scobie such versatility is one more reason why the Posse can't be contained spouse behind two great players Gary and art and once I got my opportunity at I took advantage of any times all three without that I can't see one team stopping oh it's always going to be one guy open so you can't double all three of us at the same time no regular-season game reaches the intensity level of a clash with the cowboy [Applause] in the opening minutes defenders knocked the Cowboys flat on their back take one to pass quickly yeah it would be Washington's only lead of the day I'm Dallas gambled and succeeded with everything they tried Ariely you coming to the near corner up in the air in the end zone yeah get out he caught it runners down for Dallas it had taken 13 weeks for someone to finally defeat the Reds Gibbs hopes for a perfect season advantage but the chance to clinch Washington's first Eastern Division title in four years was ripe for the taking the following week against the right rebound rebound and get back on the top starting today then we got 60-minute washington struggled to a one point halftime lead then brought the rams back to reality with a flurry of scoring strike the play-action fake rolling left is riffin looking right for the tight end got a man out there 25 20 God or touchdown Washington [Applause] thing up the screen of the nearside got it there Gerben he's back up to the 20-yard line 15 and a goodbye touchdown Washington on a screen pass ladies and gentlemen will wonders never cease touchdown [Music] you the heart in the end zone Sanders touchdown Washington because they don't yeah y'all realize you wanted to be today you guys are set up last week to come inside dude I saw the X is where the cameras going to be and where coach's closest is good lock it up though now next home field for the first time since their Super Bowl season of 1987 the Washington Redskins wore the Eastern Division crown this championship was a testament to the players who would fought for it the brush who had masterminded it no gift is probably the most psychologically aware coach I've ever been around he he has a great feel for pulling the right strings and saying the right things to guys and the reason I say that he's good is because he's believable because of his discipline because of his ability to concentrate he can he can totally consume himself with football he can tell because the game plans would get on Wednesdays they're like you know this is terrific they only had two days to work on it sometimes soon as you see that game plan you know what it's going to order because his enthusiasm putting it in you know I mean that's that's his offensive mind is unbelievable and I think that during the season you know you just tells himself a for the next six months I'm thinking nothing but football I think this is one of the best football teams that I've been with period where the players have been taken upon themselves to be the leaders and the motivating factor and then a great job charting the course and they're the ones that made it a special kind of year for us now only one goal remained to play off on field advantage Jamin a starts right here we're doing it [Applause] [Music] he founded a waitress the defense spotted Phoenix two touchdowns and no more while the offense mounted the second half come back to wrap up the Windy corner one of the corners is there [Applause] [Music] with home teen old in the playoffs to cure Washington returned home and closed out the regular season at RFK with a thorough thrashing of their one-time tour matters from New York hurry up is part riffin looking frozen out over the commentary part of the giant one [Music] the Redskins earned a franchise record tying 14th victory with conventional scores and a trick play that left the Giants dazed and confused here's the end around pink again the month this time there goes rippin going deep on the fly to Clark in the regular season ended in Philadelphia were injured Eagle quarterback Randall Cunningham seemed quite content to be on the sidelines and out of the reach of Washington's defense the Redskins substituted liberally and rested many starters after halftime yet still led until a field goal in the final seconds gave the Eagles an upset victory despite finishing the year with this loss 1991 have been one of the greatest seasons in team history and its star performer had clearly been Mark written all season long a crescendo of appreciation of built for the rejuvenated Washington Redskins rippin set fire into the nearside book is wide open for a touchdown Washington Reds here there [Applause] [Music] in 1991 Ripon established a well-earned reputation as the most accurate long passer in the game he finished the season with a baker's dozen of completions that traveled 47 yards or longer and let all-conference quarterbacks in yardage and touchdown [Music] behind the success story of Mark rippin is a classic saga of redemption a quest for recognition that began in 1988 amidst conflict and controversy we get stacks for the first time today bubble the ball picked up by Mary Griffin's early years in Washington were pockmarked by mistakes that made him a target of scorn and ridicule his arm was a cannon but his cannonballs carried Redskins receivers beyond the field of play but more damning than any other deficiency was the perception the mark Ripon collapsed in the clutch in the playoffs and his eyes were telling me that he was believing in himself he came up the line of scrimmage and in the middle of the first quarter I came to the sidelines and if King became calm do you want this guy doesn't believe he can do it rippen's mistake riddled playoff performance against the 49ers only reinforced the doubters who questioned his ability to lead the Redskins to a championship when it comes down to crunch time some guys want the ball some guys want to make the place the other guys are just saying hey give it to somebody else you know me now I'll choose to play another time the quiet and modest tripping who never talked a good game finally began playing one in 1991 the foolish mistakes managed and in their place where the right plays at the right time called and executed with flawless precision the bottom line is already known as a winner or loser and I think you know it's I played some games you know where I've just been totally awful we've end up winning but once I leave out locked in with the win no matter how you play you're still go home of the smile on your face you still are waiting for the guy to get on the field and take it down and win a championship to win a Super Bowl it's still not over for mark let's face it he's going to be judged here with the Redskins if he can win a Super Bowl because that's what other quarterbacks here are done and so he's going to be judged on that the 1991 playoffs would be a proving ground for Mark rebel his performance would determine the success or failure of the Redskins good afternoon from a windy rainy Washington DC where all year long the Redskins have enjoyed the view from the top but this week they've begun to realize just how far they could fall it's the Redskins of the Falcons playoff game number one Joe Gibbs hates windy weather because it disrupts his passing game but think about this if it disrupts his passing game it'll disrupt the falcons as well and what are the falcons going to do if they can't pass they're going to die all the pressures on find an eager to avenge their regular-season thrashing the funky and frisky Atlanta Falcons strutted into RFK but the study downpour rained all over their rap party the Falcons dance floor melted into mud and the sure-footed ensure handed Redskins pounced on every Atlanta mistake and one stretched the windswept and soggy Falcon attack went six straight possessions without producing a first down meanwhile Washington turned the torn-up curve to its advantage slogging through the slop with hard running from Ricky urban urban go to the left side brisket parka with the 10 to the 5 right here when the Falcons trying to get their ground game on tract they became unglue number 71 Charles Mann stripped the ball free one of Atlanta's six turnovers of the game setting up another touchdown from designated score Gerald Ray rigs up the middle [Applause] laughs kids visions of victory grew even more waterlogged for sinking Atlanta in the second half the Redskins kept their balance of the RFK quite Meyer shelling their opponents into the mud and out of the playoffs you their rigs on the left side guys regs final score cushion the Washington victory [Applause] here with us today but the risk is and they're showering to feel with us ever seen [Applause] [Music] [Applause] only the Detroit Lions now stood in Washington spam for a trip to Minneapolis and the Super Bowl [Applause] ain't no tomorrow now is it is bigger in Super Bowl get hit doctor for the air former senator quit again with the game barely a minute old the Redskins overwhelmed the Lions and punched in the first points of the afternoon for the right side rig for the heads down drive here we go Detroit responded with a pair of scores but a chip low Miller field goal and a second riggs touchdown gave Washington a 17 to 10 halftime and back behind Donnie Warren he goes left side drag guys touchdown Washington right behind middle didn't Warren Gerald Reagan goes over [Music] [Applause] [Music] Washington added three quick points to begin the third period then turn matters over to assistant head coach Ritchie Pettibone and his national defense the second half was an exercise in futility for the Lions attack they gained a few yards or no points and were completely overwhelmed by Washington's defense and its own special brand of capital punishment [Music] the lion's roar was permanently silenced as were any remaining critics of quarterback mark reppin a one-time Washington whipping boy castaway old seasons of doubt and dismay with a pair of picture-perfect second-half touchdown pass [Music] pirate keet got a man down there in quark he'd go to the to touchdown Washington lipid it's the big what wow what a fast that Redskins in Super Bowl 26 you left I poured it all together and you gotta it's time for Super Bowl 46 after shooting the gaps of about football we finally get to play some football let's get to it are They pretty much stomped the entire league and did it in one of the deepest divisions ever, defending champs giants, next years Super Bowl Champ cowboys and a stacked eagles team that was loaded on defense
