on july 27th 2022 a minecraft beat the record live event was in progress when something incredible happened a runner named dreaming arturs beat the game in 8 minutes and 59 seconds the fastest a player had ever beaten that category of minecraft beating a world record that had stood for over six months in minecraft speedrunning's biggest category except maybe not two days later the minecraft speedrunning team made an announcement the run had been rejected for a variety of reasons this wasn't shocking news but it was disappointing to many people including myself i had just finished a video about the new world record knowing i would be out of town for the next few days when at 3am i saw the announcement but now that the video you're watching is finally here there's more important things to talk about mainly was this run faked the mod team's decision wasn't based on definitive proof that it was it was based on a lack of evidence provided by the runner that it was real an illegal mod being used that didn't mean the run was fake but was technically against the rules and the questionable history of the runner who pulled this run off in this video i'm going to dive into all of those things as well as the run itself and try to find out whether or not this world record speed run was faked but first i want to dive into the sponsor of today's video buff buff is a gaming rewards program that lets you earn points that can be spent on a ton of cool products while playing your favorite games by letting the app run in the background while you play games like minecraft valorant fortnite and league of legends the points you earn can be spent on steam credit skins game keys gaming hardware gift cards and real-life minions that will actually do free manual labor for you my favorite thing about buff is how easy it is to use it's free to download and doesn't affect the gameplay of the games it works with at all but i know what you're thinking buff is probably going to collect my data and use my gpu to mine cryptocurrency sending money from my hard-earned skywars kills straight into elon musk's pocket you are so wrong buff is totally safe to use it doesn't involve any data mining and doesn't track anything except for the user's game performance and achievements buff can be used worldwide although some of the rewards in buff store are only available in the us do you want to start earning rewards whenever you're gaming for free download buff right now using our link down in the description to get a bonus 70 buff points right off the bat and remember buff is not a program where i come to your house and force you to exercise at gunpoint that is not what it is that's very important to keep in mind thanks again to buff for sponsoring this video and now let's get back into this potentially faked world record when this world record happened needless to say it was a big deal the last time the record had been beaten was in january of this year and the last record before that was all the way back in april of 2021. 1.16 speedruns have a level of randomness to them that means that the base level of skill necessary to beat the world record is very accessible to anyone with the time and commitment for it more skill helps your chances as does more time and better equipment but world record runs are one in a million actually that's a gross underestimate there's definitely been well over a million resets since the last world record all this goes to say that a lot of the time the new world record comes out of nowhere from a runner no one really had their eye on on july 27th 2022 that's what appeared to happen as this runner not only beat the world record but became the first player to ever beat minecraft rsg in under 9 minutes now after an official retime the time of the run did turn out to be 901 and more importantly the record didn't count but in the moment this was huge before we get into the aftermath of the run and how and why it ended up being rejected let's analyze the run through the eyes of an innocent unknowing minecraft speedrunning fan watching it for the first time as dreaming our tours flips between worlds the way he resets might look a little unfamiliar to you players with good equipment are able to multi-instance which means that they can have multiple instances of minecraft open at once and flip between them quickly saving time that would normally be spent on the loading screen this doesn't make the runs any faster but it saves real life time however our tours is restrained to just a single instance but is making the best of it you might have noticed the weird stuttery way that he switches between runs this is due to him using a mod that allows him to view the spawn area as the world loads you can see the loading screen in the bottom corner this allows him to reset worlds that look unappealing before he would normally be able to but it doesn't actually affect the runs since he's not able to start moving until the loading screen would have already passed after over a minute of resetting our tours finds a seed he wants to check out a coastal spawn which is what players will almost exclusively reset for these days with either a shipwreck or a buried treasure players can get all the materials they need to make tools and enter the nether you might be wondering how a runner would find buried treasure without getting the map from a shipwreck first but speedrunners have a strategy for that maples buried treasure by decreasing their render distance and using the block entity section of the pie chart they can find chunks near them that have chests in them by doing this on any given coast there's a decent chance a runner is going to find a buried treasure and that's exactly what our tours does here the utility of this is apparent right away as he has all the iron he needs along with a good amount of food and some tnt less than 30 seconds into the run the tnt comes in handy as our tours blows up some trees to get all the wood he needs very quickly and after some quick crafting he's got everything he needs to enter the nether only a minute into the run the last step is to mine some underwater gravel in order to get a piece of flint and he's ready to make another portal normally a runner would now go boating out into the ocean in search of an underwater magma ravine but luckily our tours has a lava pool right on the beach making this nether enter even faster when everything is said and done he's entering the nether at a minute and 39 seconds which happens to be the exact same pace that cube1337x entered the nether at in his world record once he's into the nether arturs wants a bastion and another fortress to get all the loot he needs to beat the game and he immediately spots a bastion specifically he spots the triple chest room on the side of a bridge bastion of the four types bridge bastions are generally the slowest to loot but given that he practically spawned inside of it this is still great news for our tours he dashes through the chest room grabbing a gold chest plate for protection and heads to the chalice of gold blocks where the route for looting bridge bastions begins he grabs 12 gold blocks burning hoglin and getting some extra food while he mines then heads back to the triple chest room where he breaks a gold block to get the piglens to charge at him then traps them in a hole and starts trading gold with them the items he needs from his piglens are around a stack of ender pearls at least 10 but preferably 20 obsidian and enough string or crying obsidian and glowstone to make the explosives he'll need to kill the dragon the string is crafted into wool to make beds and the crying obsidian and glowstones are crafted into respawn anchors while he waits for these traits to come arturs again uses the pie chart and render distance manipulation to his advantage this time to locate another fortress by finding the distance of the mob spawner that's rendered in he can decrease that render distance by one chunk then move one chunk in each direction when he moves in the direction of the mob spawner it will re-enter the pie chart showing him the direction of the nether fortress another strata towards uses here is what's called a pearl hang he heads in the direction of the fortress then throws an enterpril and before it lands decreases his render distance once he has all the trades he wants he increases his render distance again causing the ender pearl to land and instantly take him to where he wants to go saving a small chunk of time our tours makes it to the nether fortress at 4 minutes and 50 seconds he finds a blaze spawner fairly quickly and after getting two blaze rods from killing the first two blazes that spawn he uses tnt to blow up the area around the blaze spawner without destroying the spawner itself this gives the blazes more space to spawn making it more likely that the maximum amounts of four blazes will spawn of course just one blaze spawns right as the tnt goes off but luckily this blaze also drops a blaze rod which have 50 drop rates our taurus wants six blaze rods which he can combine with 12 ender pearls to make the eyes of ender necessary to enter the end while he waits for the next round of blazes to spawn arturs builds his first nether portal using 10 of his 20 obsidian the reason he wants 20 obsidian is for a strategy called double travel where the runner builds another portal and re-enters the overworld throws an eye of ender uses a bot created by speedrunner ninja brain to accurately determine the likeliest location of the stronghold then travels through the nether to the coordinates that correspond with that location in the overworld and builds their third nether portal of the run and hopefully comes out into the stronghold you travel eight times as fast in the nether as in the overworld which is what makes double travel so useful four more blazes spawn on the next cycle for our tours and three of them drop rods giving him six for seven drop rates overall and his q to exit the nether he's back through into the overworld at six minutes and 18 seconds and he's gained almost 30 seconds on cube's world record at this point mainly because his netherspawn was much closer to the bastion while it's possible to find the stronghold while throwing only one eye of ender using something called perfect travel arturs decides to use the classic calculated travel method and throw two with the ninja brain bot giving our tours 100 confidence in the location of the stronghold he races back through the nether and the specified coordinates then builds his third portal and travels into the stronghold at 7 minutes and 39 seconds for the last time in this run he's going to use the pie chart to his advantage again to see the direction of a mob spawner this will show him which direction the portal room which has a silverfish spawner is in using this he gets to the portal almost immediately fills the portal and enters the end at 7 minutes and 59 seconds he's actually lost enough time at this point that he's fallen behind cube's record where he entered the end 11 seconds faster 1.16n fights are based on the dragon perching at the fountain in the middle of the end allowing players to blow up their explosives and kill the dragon very quickly but the dragon's perch is largely just based on luck our tours needs near perfect luck to beat the record here but he gets just that with the dragon perching instantly and are tours finishing the run with a 54 second end split one of the fastest known splits in a run ever so while this run turned out to not be the first sub 9 on retime it was still the world record in the most hotly contested category in minecraft speedrunning and possibly the most well-known category of any game in speedrunning history so it was pretty important once it was submitted the leaderboard moderators got right to work in going through the process necessary to verify the run but right away they ran into some pretty big problems let's take a look into the investigation behind this run and try to decipher whether or not it was faked right off the bat the fact of the matter was that this run was never going to be verified because the mod that our tours use to reset worlds more efficiently is an illegal mod but there are plenty of legit runners who use this mod and similar ones because they don't care about the leaderboard they just want a better shot at getting a good time the argument that this run could be fake requires looking at the other parts of the mod team's decision and there are plenty of factors to dig into reason 1 that the run was rejected there was a delay in submitting files as part of the proof needed to verify runs speedrunners with top times must submit the world files that correspond to the run so that moderators can check that everything in the files aligns with the run this makes it much harder for a runner to simply splice a fake recording together since they must have a world file that matches everything in the recording our tours apparently took a while to send his files to the mods which creates a suspicion that he could have been tampering with them on its own this is no reason to reject a run but let's look at the other reasons reason 2 the instance of the game is very fresh this means that the run occurred very soon after the runners started playing on that particular day this is obviously entirely possible and a very minor cause for concern but it's another small piece pointing in the wrong direction now if you're starting to think it doesn't seem like they have any real evidence here this run should not have been rejected just wait i promise you'll feel differently by the end of the video reasons 3 and 4 are a fair bit more serious there is a lack of older logs and a lack of any past attempts submitted by our tours runners are required to submit their logs of past runs going back a certain amount to prove that they were running the game cleanly and without cheating for a significant period of time leading up to the run our tours failed to do this meaning the mods again had no choice but to reject the run there was also a lack of any past attempts presented by our tours further creating the suspicion that he wasn't a player who had ran the game much but while you could arguably let our tours off the hook for each of these reasons the fifth and final reason is definitely the most damning arturs is a known cheater he had previously submitted multiple runs which were rejected because they were not pulled off legitimately people can change but when there's plenty of other evidence suggesting that they haven't i see no reason to give them the benefit of the doubt what i believe our tours managed to do here was cheat a run without leaving any easily detectable signs of cheating to the people watching the run plenty of seasoned top runners watched the run congratulated our tours and went on with their days this is why we have the mod team while our tours could have snuck the run past the bare eyes of everyone else he didn't even come close to getting it past the leaderboard moderators there are plenty of people who like to complain that the moderators are lazy or slow and that's why the official leaderboard takes so long to update but without them doing their due diligence runs like this one might sneak through but luckily having them to catch runs like this allows runs that were truly earned to take center stage for example the new 1.16 world record by saggy enderman where they beat the game in 8 minutes and 37 seconds that after a six month wait happened just two days after the faked world record but we're gonna talk about that one in the next video if you made it to the end of this video thanks for sticking around and let us know in the comments if you think the run was faked or not please leave a like if you enjoyed the video and subscribe to see more speedrunning content as always thank you so much for watching and i'll see you in the next video
