[Music] what's up everybody its Jesse from Mullen Woodworks today we're going over my most recent project that I just completed which is my 1977 Gold Coast camper trailer rebuild it was a really fun project I never done anything like this before but it was a it was a really cool learning experience and it completely transformed the entire trailer from the outside painting exterior to the inside painting and every doing the kitchen putting a new faucet redoing the toilet and ceiling fixing water damage the whole thing it was a lot of fun I learned a lot so we're gonna do a overview today go from start to finish a quick fast-paced video so this is where we started it was an old trailer it does not look very good it has some ugly orange and yellow stripes on the outside and a really sun-bleached window screen the inside is a bunch of fake wood ugly blinds and really the only cool part about the inside is that the stove still works really well the heater fortunately works so we didn't have to replace that and the cushions are in pretty much pristine condition they are faded a little bit but man they look really really cool from being you know 40 years old and still just great and they don't smell which was very surprising [Music] so he started by taking off the cabinet doors now we wanted to paint these so there wasn't so much of the fake 1970s wood that actually looked more up-to-date so we took them off and then we painted them poly dump and then later on we'll add some hardware [Music] [Music] we took off that ugly sunscreen that was fiberglass and we wanted to add something would cuz and give it a lot more character so we added some cedar tongue-and-groove and it was really easy to install [Music] we started painting the inside we're going with a more modern modern retro look so we're using white and black paint [Music] [Music] I took out the old fridge because it actually does not work there was a bunch of knobs broken we couldn't get it to run so we are going to be replacing that with a retro looking fridge [Music] so next we actually had to replace the battery there was no battery there to begin with so we couldn't test any of the lights or anything like that so we installed a new battery which was extremely simple and then moved on from the battery to the actual water tanks and testing everything seeing if there was leaks so we filled up the water tank that is located underneath the couch and we realized that there needed to be a new tube replaced for the drainage so we replaced that immediately and moved on to actually testing the gray tank underneath and the black tank under underneath and they both had leaks so we had to go through and fix those as well [Music] [Music] need to tackle the ceiling there was some water damage around one of the roof vents and so we need to figure out where that was coming in and fix it so I went through and I took out the panel that had the most water damage and also all of the fiberglass insulation [Music] there's one really rotten board that was next to the vent but I didn't want to take that out and cause more issues and more leaking so after we pulled it down you could actually see that they attempted to repair it already and the repair seemed structurally fine we seem to make sure it wasn't leaking any more so we went on top of the roof and actually coated the top with some flex seal I saw it in some other videos and had good reviews on fixing basically leaks like this in RVs so that's what we ended up going with and it did work because after we got a ton of rain and it hasn't leaked since [Music] after we knew the leak was completely fixed and it wasn't gonna leak anymore we put new insulation in and we also put in a new panel [Music] [Music] [Music] now we hate this MDF fake wood sticker panels they're just really ugly and it just makes the whole trailer seem really dark so I got some of this polypropylene material and we're actually using it for the roof it's gonna give us a white roof plus it's easy to cut install the transitions are really easy I use liquid nails and some screws and actually kind of made it look like an airplane because you see all the studs and the screws like in all the wings kind of the same concept it ended up looking really nice and brightening up the trailer a lot [Music] [Music] [Music] next we need to tackle the bathroom the bathroom is in really rough shape we had to fix a lot of the wall panels but the toilets from 1970 so we actually ended up taking that out and putting it a brand new toilet as well [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] there was a section that it looked like they were trying to put in a vanity if there's a bunch of foam insulation on the floor and this tube running up so it almost seemed like they were just actually running the water straight up to the ground for the sink seems a little weird and shady but we cut off that tube and I actually built up the platform around the insulation and then built a brand new cabinet in that space so we can actually have more storage for clothes and bins and other things [Music] [Music] now there's no door on the bathroom so I needed to get a door and we actually bought an older trailer so we took the bathroom door off of that trailer before we sold it and so I kept that and I actually used it I had to cut it down stain it paint it but end up working really well [Music] moving on to the main cabin we wanted to add some shiplap throughout the cabin so we had a wall that we knew we were gonna put a TV a small TV on at one point and so we're going to put ship lab all on that wall and then also a little part on the entrance it added a ton of character that was subtle and we actually had most of this for free anyway from my in-laws so it worked out great [Music] now for the kitchen we wanted to add a backsplash but I didn't want to add a ton of weight even though this is a small trailer and my truck will handle it just fine we didn't want to add a ton of weight to it so we use this peel and stick backsplash now we it's easy to install it actually looks really good and so it went on really easy we're happy with it now if you live in a climate like ours if your temperature changes from cold to hot it's it's not as good if you're if you're in like California and your temperatures aren't changing that much you'll probably be just fine the issue is as it the heat expands this material will also expand and maybe start to peel it peels mostly in the cold so for us here in Utah got pretty cold on few days and we actually had to press back on that backsplash but it is really cool if you want a cheap option and you you don't live in a very cold climate I think it'll probably work pretty well we put in a new faucet because this faucet was old and ugly that was just a simple drilling plugging in and attaching the pipe [Music] [Applause] [Music] now for the flooring we're using this sticky vinyl tile and this actually works pretty well we're really happy with it it gives a look way better than it was before and we just stuck it straight on to the linoleum that was already there now there's been a few parts like where the heater vent was is that since the heat was getting pushed right onto that it expanded that tie little and popped it up so I actually just shot some Brad nails into that you can't even see the Brad nails it actually keeps it stuck down we haven't had an issue [Music] [Applause] [Music] now there's a cabinet that folds down into a bunk bed we painted that cabinet add a new hardware to the doors and reinstalled that bunk bed [Music] [Music] [Music] I added a new transition piece for the door and also went through and updated all the lights from the ceiling lights to underneath the cabinets they are all just old and dingy and they're pretty cheap if you buy LED ones from Amazon so that's what we end up going with really easy to install simple and they came out great [Music] we really like the interior it turned out awesome it has that retro modern look that we really wanted and accomplished it was a night and day difference from what the old fake wood all over 1970s look was but also complements that the 1970 cushions really well [Music] now moving on to the exterior we really wanted a different look we didn't like how old it looked but we still kind of wanted the same pattern to keep it kind of homage to the original design when did you a black and white paint so we started by sanding the entire trailer this was probably the most time-consuming part because you really have to make sure that the entire aluminum body is scratched up so the primer wood will adhere to the trailer after it was completely sanded we wiped it all down and we got ready to prime before priming we had to tape off everything which is actually even more time-consuming than sanding it's just tedious work so that took almost probably two or three hours just to tape off everything but it's worth the hassle then trying to get paint off of places you didn't want it after using the butcher paper and painters tape and getting everything done we moved on to priming we use an oil-based primer and we let it set after we sprayed it all we let it set for two or three days now this let it completely dry and cure and then we moved on to taping off what we wanted for the black stripe [Music] [Music] the black stripe will go over where the orange and yellow stripes were so we taped off all the area to make sure none of the black gets over where we're gonna paint white I used a gray coat airless sprayer and we mixed mineral spirits with the oil-based paint and it works really well really easy when we just pretty much eyeballed it to be honest we didn't measure anything we just poured a little mineral spirits mixed it in and you could feel the different consistency and what we'll actually spray out of the Graco airless sprayer now when you're taking off the tape and butcher paper around the paint you want to do it while it's still tacky so if you do wait until the very end when it's all dry your you have a chance of ripping up part of that paint because it's all stuck together if you do while it's tacky you'll be fine and it will allow it you to pull off that tape really easily without messing up the paint after we got the black stripes done we left it let it sit for a couple days and then we taped off the black stripes and got ready to paint all the white [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] now this was a really fun project it took me about a little over a month it really wasn't that long I got to put a lot of time into it but it was a blast to do it was something I've never done before there's parts that I thought we're gonna be really daunting that ended up not being so like painting the exterior I thought it was gonna be like sanding it all down and ruining the paint that was already there it was a little like as soon as you do it you're committed and so it was daunting at times but it was a lot of fun a big learning experience and the best part is since we didn't get have to put that much money into this we actually have the pink slip to our trailer we didn't have to loan it out so if that's something that you guys want where you actually own your trailer and not you're paying monthly payments this is a good way to do that we have three little kids we went camping already twice and we've driven this trailer five hours hundreds of miles and then five hours home and it was perfectly fine it did really well and we're really excited with the results thanks for watching guys if you have any questions or want to see anything great detail like painting the exterior or the bathroom or the kitchen area you can check out those
