modern workplace tips quick how-to demos hi I'm your host Michael janati the new SharePoint migration tool from Microsoft quick disclaimer and he views opinions and/or demos in this video are purely the expressions of Michael janati and not my employer demos are as is used as your own at your own risk so today's demo comes from two things really one is a question I hear over and over and over when I'm meeting with customers they're always asking me you know look how do we migrate content to sharepoint online in a particular note usually it's not just it's not around IT doing mass moves because they're you they're engaging with fast track from Microsoft or they have third-party tools and there's great ones out there from half-point metal logics and so many others but it's more concerns look I've got these subject matter experts and others out there in the org how can I enable them to easily migrate content well you know as we talk about our solution first of all the idea behind this is to provide a simple easy to use tool for the migration of content from a number of sources file shares sharepoint on prem and even from a csv where you need to do batch uploads and like i said earlier there are lots of options look there's a lot of great third-party tools out there today that are absolutely rockin and if you have them they allow you to do all kinds of very sophisticated handling of the data in the upload process what if you're looking for just something that's simple and easy to use maybe to use again by your subject matter experts or even end-users the solution SharePoint migration tool it provides a simple to use application for the migration of content to SharePoint Online and this was highlighted in a post yesterday at ignite by Bill Baer one of the rocking guys on the rocking team for office 365 doing some phenomenal announ it's just over the last two days at Microsoft's ignite conference and so what I thought I would do is let's go ahead let's take a demonstration of the use of the SharePoint migration tool to move a set of content we're gonna keep it simple but so you can see how easy the tool is to use how simple and the expected behavior alright so for our demonstration I have here a modern communication site and we want to bring an import we have a document library here as you can see and it's empty so we want to migrate content so I'm gonna go on back here so what we need to do is we are going to open up our tool while that's working let's go over here and you see here's my SharePoint migration tool and recently added I installed it it's also down here in my start I'm gonna go ahead and click that verifies the application it actually did an update this morning when I was playing around with it and so the first thing we're gonna do it says you know we can select sources choose a destination where we want to do it go they have more learn more about migration where you can go and learn details around help but it says sign in to get started so I'm gonna click Next that's for my username so everybody's gonna get my email here and again at microsoft.com and you will not get my password and we'll go ahead and click sign-in it's gonna go through its little thing sign me into my office 365 account there we go now we get a little pop-up and it asked where is your data this is the data I want to move up into here so I could take it from SharePoint on premise from a file share or if I've constructed a CSV file for bulk migration I could do so there as well but I'm gonna go ahead and select file share it asked me to choose a folder or I could paste a location I'm gonna go ahead and say choose a folder now for our demo you know typically you'd be going to a shared drive for my demo I've actually created a demo content folder with some content it's actually stuff from the Microsoft fast track site so it's content any client any of you watching this can go ahead and grab go ahead and click OK and then I'm going to click Next the next piece is it wants me to select a destination SharePoint site enter the URL now I will tell you I've done this a few times so here you can see my full URL displayed here for this website at the top however here is the actual URL at once my keys demo Kham Kham site this other stuff site page is home to dot aspx leave it you don't want that it's gonna say in fact let me just show you so if i grab the whole thing and then come on back down here again i paste that URL in and then we'll click out up here it's gonna look and says cannot get document not library now like I said don't grab all that just grab it to the end of the site name right here then you'll see when I click outside it's gonna go ahead it's looking ah now I get a drop down and it shows me the libraries available so if I had an image library and as upload a bulk uploading a bunch of images I could grab that but I just want the Documents folder so I'm gonna go ahead and select add now it's gone ahead and again I could add additional tasks that's just one task right so I could add additional tasks of content destinations and all that good stuff I'm gonna go ahead and say migrate I'd only want to do this one for the sake of time and it says it's not checking the environments and it's gonna take just a few moments but some things I want to highlight as we're waiting shows me how many files out of how many are migrated so it's scanning the files how many bytes out of it saying it's total forty point two two megabytes I can view a task report now this gives me a view of a whole bunch of individual reports in Excel format or once I'm done I can open click the open report and it'll give me a summary that I can take a quick look at again in Excel format but I'm gonna go ahead and we'll just wait it's almost done here you can see it's moving moving and I did this earlier to another site with like I said a whole bunch of images it's going to depend upon your the amount of content you have the size of the repository you're moving and of course your bandwidth now having said all that we all should know if you're looking to do bulk major uploads like you're talking terabytes and petabytes you might want to talk to the fast track team Microsoft fast track you might want to do something like drive ship or side load with they have the package where you can package it up and upload it through the tenant admin console this is really again for those you know simple to do pieces so we're still waiting it's checking and making sure everything's good it says 7 out of 7 and still you know it's going to go through it's doing a bunch of the different checks here so we'll let it finish once it's finished there we go this indicator turns green I get a pop-up migration is finished you want to keep this migration for future incremental runs isn't that interesting so if I want to do incrementals I could say yes and run those periodically and it will do it incremental add or I could say no I don't care I'm done now again I can go ahead say open report here we go I get this global settings a summary report and it's just gonna give me a quick overview as to what happened here and I can open that up in Excel not a whole lot to show but it shows here the source the destination the status total bytes total gig how much was migrated file count and all that good stuff and I also have a global settings we have a task report again where I can see more in-depth details I'm done with that I don't need I'm gonna go ahead here and click close go ahead and close that out once I've done that let's go ahead and go to our Documents area and we'll see there we go so here are all those folders that have gone up so we have our EAP closeout email template an email another one we've got a bunch of different forms so those were all uploaded via that service now of course you know if I only had a few like this I could have just gone ahead and quickly drag-and-drop but if you have especially when you want to add multiple jobs the tool does a great job of that a couple other things I just want to quickly open and kind of highlight some stuff here so we'll go ahead and click Next again let's log in again and it is gonna prompt you for this each time so Microsoft that cam and my password which you don't get to know they will sign and there is some additional options so what I showed you is pretty basic so again we could have went in I'll go ahead let's just choose a folder again we'll pick press panic at the top say ok next it's asking for this URL here so go ahead and click that and again let's go back to just this piece I just wanted to quickly grab that okay and we could say documents that's all nice good and we'll add the job and again we could add additional tasks we could add many there but notice up here there is an icon for options so we do have some options if we want to do a number of pieces and again where they had let me close that real quickly on the one page when we were first starting it had the option to go out and see more where we could learn about all the settings here and if I click this notice it has here learn more we can go online and learn more about some of the options but look at what we have here only perform scanning enable incremental migration migrate file history or file version so I got I have that on maybe I don't want previous versions keep all versions do not migrate hidden folders do not migrate files created before so I can set a date range not migrate files modified before again do not mile migrate files with these extensions so I can do a file extension exemptions do not migrate files and folders with invalid count characters migrate one note folder as OneNote notebook as your Active Directory lookups preserve user permissions that's on user mapping files SharePoint migration tool working folder and use custom as your storage so we have a number of options that we can also customize and set and then again when we're done boom so we can go ahead and do that again here's that safe tasks to CSV so we can create a CSV out of here a whole bunch of options it's a great tool I highly encourage you go out grab it IT start playing around with it and this may meet your need again if it doesn't there are some great third-party very robust tools out there by Ave point metal logics and others so take a look at those but the SharePoint content migration tool is a great option alright so that's it well I want to thank you for joining me today I hope you enjoyed this
