Using Shotcut to Trim Video - Simple Beginner Tutorial

this tutorial demonstrates using shortcut to trim video i show you how to cut the start and end of your footage using three different methods to make your video look clean and professional let's head over to the computer and get started so to demonstrate this i have firstly created a new project and then added some clips into the playlist whenever you're adding clips into shortcut i do recommend that you add them into the playlist first just so you can keep track of exactly what you've got in your project in a nice organized way if you do that then you can also use the first method to trim your video this is what's called setting the start and end points to trim the footage so double click on your footage once it's on the screen and you've got the red box around it just here that means you've got it selected correctly now using these arrows here you can click and drag to set the start and end points for your video now if you click and drag the playlist item into your video track one it will be much shorter than the original clip that's because this clip now only shows the small selection that you made with the start and end points okay so that's method one nice and easy to get started so now method two this is where you click and drag to trim the footage so first of all drag the full clip into your timeline and then when you hover over the bars you can see a green and red sidebar if you click and drag that will shorten the clip and edit out either the beginning or the end of the footage effectively it does the same thing as the first method but in a slightly different way now just before we continue if we're meeting for the very first time then my name is joe and this channel helps youtubers edit their videos and use free software if you're creating youtube videos regularly and not seeing the growth you'd hope for you're probably missing one or more elements of the video creator framework you can download the free pdf in the description below to get started now let's get back to the video now the third method if i add the full clip onto the timeline again and now put my playhead to where i want the video to start and i can click this button here or s on the keyboard and that will split the track i can now select this part and press delete and it will remove that piece of footage i can do the same for the end of the video click where you want it to be on the playhead press s on the keyboard or this button just here and then select the piece of footage you don't want anymore and press delete so that's the third way to split and trim your footage and if you're just doing the beginning and end of your footage then i would recommend one of the first or second options however most people when they get into video editing they do want to trim out some bits in the middle as well and that's where method three comes in to expand on method three if i wanted let's imagine i want to split out or take out this middle section just here i click where i want it to start and press s to split and then click again where i want it to end click s to split now i've got three sections of clip and i don't want this middle bit so i can simply delete if i undo that very quickly now quite a common scenario when you want to delete this middle clip if you press delete then it will simply disappear and it will leave all of the timeline in place well that's great if that's what you want but in many cases you want this clip to butt up to this one so there's no gap left in the middle if that's the case select the clip and press x on the keyboard that will mean the clip butts up to the previous clip you can also right click and press remove which will do exactly the same thing it will remove any space or that particular video clip and move all of the other bits together so that's the three ways you can use shortcut to trim your video please consider liking and subscribing and before you go click or tap on the video on your screen right now and it will continue to help you with shortcuts i'll see you in the next video
