JAMES: So this is where the magic happens! LINUS: Wow, 45 drives hooked you guys the math up. Look at his face, the IT guy over here! Why?! Who would do that to their hard drive?! JAMES: Welcome to Make It Real I'm your host, theHackSmith our channel got its start trying to emulate some of Iron Man's abilities. From shooting rockets with Jairus of All, from attempting to fly using model rocket engines, to building an EDF powered flight suit to eventually trying Richard Browning's jet engine powered suit, the closest thing we have to flying like Iron Man. We've made a full metal Iron Man helmet complete with a heads-up display, heck we even tried our hand at a realistic arc reactor. I mean we even started out in a cave... I mean a garage...! And today we have a 13,000 square foot state-of-the-art research and develop facility, we're doing our best at becoming as close to Stark Industries as possible in real life. We even have a robot arm called dummy though he's kind of disappointing to be honest... But, one of Starks most impressive but sometimes overlooked accomplishments, is his AI system, Jarvis. Jarvis takes care of everything from networking accessing a massive satellite network monitoring the facilities security systems and even controlling the heating system and lights. Jarvis was even adapted and installed into the Iron Man suit to help Tony navigate its systems. Now, I don't have a full superhero suit... Yet! But we do have this giant new facility so obviously it was only a matter of time before we created our very own Jarvis. On this channel you've seen us build a ton of really cool stuff, we take mechanical engineering to the next level, and we've even dabbled in programming and developing software apps like the dashboard app out of our half-scale cyber truck. But this Jarvis system is a little different and I think we could use some help. We got in touch with a fellow Canadian that you might know and asked for his help in designing the system. He did us one better and decided to pay us a visit to help us build and install our very own Jarvis system. In fact I think that might be him! JAMES: Linus! LINUS: Oh, hi! JAMES: Good to see you finally! LINUS: Nice to meet you, wow...! JAMES: Welcome to Hacksmith Industries! Let's go on a tour! So this is where the magic happens we have about 10,000 square feet of engineering R&D space. LINUS: That's incredible, you've even got tools for finding all the cool stuff. JAMES: We're slowly trying to like have all the bits and pieces that we can do any kind of like mythbusters-style tests that we want kind of thing. LINUS: Wow... This is amazing. JAMES: So, we keep all of our parts in clear IKEA bins, to try and keep it organized and visible so you know exactly what's in there... LINUS: Pink heat shrink? I love it! JAMES: Over there we've got our IT office a a little more prototyping in there too. LINUS: We don't even have an IT office. Feeling a little inadequate right now. Nice! I love it! What happens if I go out here? Oh... JAMES: We have our Hacksmith gym, where we try and keep the team in shape. LINUS: This is the first time I've been in a gym since high school! This is the easy one isn't it? This is so cool! JAMES: This literally has 50% more torque than an f-150, 2020, v8, 5 liter engine. If you guys want to see Linus whip a ball-bearing as hard as he can at this window make sure to check out his video on Linus Tech Tips.\ So over here we have the power loader which we're working on right now. LINUS: Nice! Like, a working one? JAMES: Oh yeah! This is our CNC plasma table, it's one of our favorite pieces of equipment and can cut through up to an inch and a half steel- LINUS: That's my favorite piece of equipment I don't even have one... JAMES: We got a drill press, sand blaster, giant belt sander, Tormach CNC machine, CNC lathe- we're getting an even bigger one soon and over here we have our lunch room as you can see the employees are eating lunch. LINUS: Even some of my employees are eating lunch! JAMES: And finally... The gift shop! Well, not the gift shop... The gallery plus the small merch gift shop! LINUS: Okay how much to buy one of these? JAMES: Not for sale... LINUS: You said gift shop! JAMES: I misspoke. Now I gotta show you something you definitely actually know about our server room and where you can help us! JAMES: There it is, you ready to see? LINUS: Oh boy if the door is anything to go by... That doesn't work... JAMES: The server works! Uh- That's just our IT guy... IT GUY: Oh the light...! LINUS: Anyway you know, you guys are in not bad shape here you got a pretty nice rack. JAMES: Thank you! LINUS: So we just need to make some key upgrades and we should be in good shape because this is just two terabytes of storage for the poor editors on the other side of this wall, I will say this, it's very quiet for a server room. We'll take care of that for you. I definitely like the swing out monitor, but it's clear we've got some work to do, you want me to take it from here? JAMES: Yeah... LINUS: Welcome to Make It Real I'm your host Linus, these guys are always taking piles of scrap metal and turning them into incredible stuff and that's exactly what we're gonna be doing today we're gonna be taking the pile of scrap metal that is their server room and IT infrastructure and turning it into something truly world-class and the best part is James may be good at this stuff but computer stuff maybe not his forte quite so much and I'm gonna make him build it! JAMES: I don't know about you guys but wired earbuds suck the cables are always getting tangled they get caught on things it's just not convenient! Raycon wireless earbuds are the answer! The new everyday e25 have six hours of playtime, seamless bluetooth pairing, loads of bass, they fit great and come in awesome fun colors. They sound just as amazing as other top audio brands you know and they only cost half the price I even use them when editing videos! And with several different earpiece sizes you can ensure a perfect fit to isolate external noise I even use them when doing metal work. Speaking of fit, could you do this with a pair of wired earbuds? Plus they're so comfortable sometimes I forget I'm even wearing them. To upgrade your earbud game today click on my link in the description below buyRaycon.com/hacksmith to save 15% off your purchase of earbuds! Alright so we've got all the pieces we need to start the server rebuild, should we get started? LINUS: Absolutely! JAMES: DUM-E my tools. He does that sometimes. LINUS: Where do you want to start like how much of this do you want to do? I think you should do all of it! Start by opening up this guy. So how much do you actually know about the IT infrastructure here? JAMES: Excellent question! LINUS: Ok, to your credit though you hired an IT guy, that is so much farther than most small business owners get. Ok so do you know what this one is for? Wow 45 drives hooked you guys the math up! What do you want this to do? JAMES: I want us to be able to ingest footage as fast as possible to get it back into the editors hands so they can actually spend their time editing and not waiting for things to happen like transcoding and slow Network speeds and Premier crashing because it's not able to read fast enough off the server... LINUS: Ok, so the theoretical maximum throughput to and from this thing would be the equivalent of taking 4 to 5 red mags and pulling off of them at maximum speed. JAMES: So you're telling me the editing team has no more excuses right? LINUS: That's right! EDITORS: I'm in danger! LINUS: So I just want to pop one of these memory sticks out here to find out each of these is 16 gigs which means you guys have a hundred and twenty eight gigs of RAM in a NAS... So look at look at his face, the IT guy over here. You can have up to 32 high-speed solid-state drives in this thing giving you with the drives that we've procured so these are Seagate, 3.8, 4 terabyte Iron Wolf's. That would be up to... Quick, 8 * 32... About 256 terabytes of raw capacity. So yeah you can go ahead and put that cover back on here, now comes the hard part. You have to put these solid-state drives into these slots. I like it I like it... Slot 1-1. Do you actually know the current capacity of your editing server? JAMES: I do it's... If we just, let me find a grinder... LINUS: No! No! No! 2 terabytes is what they're upgrading from and... JAMES: To be fair it's the work drive, we're only editing like... LINUS: It's non-redundant! These drives, in the unlikely event that one fails outright, like hard disconnect from the system some one rogue walks into the server room evil employee rips one out! Ha ha! Take that James! And leaves... No one will even notice. They could keep working off of it. JAMES: Wow. LINUS: Ok, so now all you gotta do is put that cover back on. Really hard I know. JAMES: Yeah that was like- LINUS: Like the simplest project you've done this a year. There it is, he's got it. So Seagate also sent over some of their Iron Wolf NAS drives so these are their more traditional mechanical drives, now solid-state is great for speed, for reliability for lots of reasons but what it isn't is economical so if you guys have projects that you've finished and you want to archive that footage so you can recall it for you know a new episode but you want to use the original quality footage. You guys need a nice big vault! So today- I feel like Oprah or something. Today we are adding 16, 32, whatever 32 plus 16 is, whatever 48 plus 16 is... JAMES: 64! LINUS: What ever 64 plus 16... And then whatever that plus 16 is. We are going to be adding this much capacity to your existing unraid server, we can do that later but for now...! We've actually got a really, really special piece that I am excited to show you it's this thing under the table and we're gonna need to lift this together I think. JAMES: I mean if it's fire proof and water proof proof, I hope it's 2-inch drop proof. LINUS: Yeah you would think it could handle something like that, so we actually worked with these guys a really long time ago validating their claims- JAMES: I saw that video. That this network storage device can withstand a fire! JAMES: And if you know anything about our channel... Fires are not only common they're expected. LINUS: Perfect! It's fireproof, it's waterproof and it can hold five more of these 16 terabyte drives, 80 terabytes of raw capacity of safe storage! Fun fact: I was talking to some of the engineers at Seagate and they said that they take one of the drives put it up on its side and just tip it over and it goes... FUAM! Face down, they're like yeah yeah no it has to be validated for that, I'm like why who would do that to their hard drive?! They're like: You don't even want to know... JAMES: You said it can pass that test. LINUS: Yeah I did but that doesn't mean it should! It does have like a sealing up the vault kind of vibe to it. Front plate! Now this guy is not particularly fast, but that's really not the point. This is where- that's right this is where you're doing your nightly back up to make sure that whatever it is you did that day is still going to be there when you get here in the morning... So that's it a comprehensive storage upgrade you've got your new high-speed editing server you've got your nightly fire proof waterproof backup for it and you've got a capacity upgrade for your vault, basement, dungeon, thing. That's it for my part! JAMES: Alright, so this is all awesome, but as you know we're trying to make this place a little more Stark Industries vibe so we're planning on also implementing on this server a bit more of a Jarvis kind of like Assistant for the facility so we've actually gone ahead and gotten all the pieces together to make a really fancy aluminum door for the server room complete with a built-in touch screen for monitoring all the different server features to make sure everything's up and running... LINUS: Please tell me it's gonna have voice recognition. JAMES: It is! LINUS: Please tell me it'll have facial recognition. JAMES: It might, But I think it'll be fun if you build it for me, I've got all the pieces it's just like IKEA furniture. LINUS: Ok perfect! Oh no, wait! JAMES: Alright let's do it! LINUS: You're gonna have to carry it yourself sorry...! That's the real key right there. JAMES: Deep breaths... LINUS: And they worked for the rest of the time and complete and utter silence! JAMES: Alright let's keep going... LINUS: I plan to find every label in this entire building take it off and putting it on a little bit crooked... LINUS: Ohhh god...! Okay too high! You're just showing off how high the scissor lift goes at this point. That harness is real junk enhancing I will say that much.
