in the description of this video or skip to this time in the video to learn more [Music] okay so you're with your friend and your friend is very nice but he's a bit naive he doesn't understand everything and he really likes this one girl and he messages her every day like hey what you doing let's hang out and she's always like hmm no I'm busy the next day hey hope you're good let's do something today sorry lots to do really busy you understand I understand but he doesn't understand the hidden meaning here because she didn't explicitly say it and therefore maybe it's not obvious but we see these messages and see the hidden meaning behind it what she is inferring so we we read between the lines we find the hidden meaning in a situation we find what is inferred I always message her to hang out but she's always busy so we will say to our friend read between the lines man she doesn't like you she's not interested again to read between the lines something isn't exactly said but we understand that this is the meaning behind it where are you going tonight you going somewhere fun yeah yeah yeah I'm going out to see some friends just some friends when someone is lying to you and you know it you don't believe their lies not for one second you understand exactly what the real situation is you can understand that this is a lie you see right through someone or you see right through the lie hmm he told me he's going to see friends tonight Yeah right I can see right through his lies he's going to see Maria it's always Maria sentence if there's an Alanis Morissette song right I can't play it because copyright but I see right through you I don't believe any of your lies so that's I see right through you but if you want to be specific this lie you would say something like you know he told me he's going to see friends but I saw right through it oh I saw right through that I know it's a lie it's always Maria but then then she followed her boyfriend to the restaurant and of course she knew it he's meeting Maria this is Maria so imagine you are her what is the first thing that you think of what do you understand about this situation you're cheating on me with Maria it's always Maria so this when you see a situation and think you understand everything before you know all of the facts we have an expression before she knows all the facts she is jumping to conclusions because because he we'll say this is Maria I told you I'm seeing friends tonight and all of a sudden hi sorry I was in the toilet I'm John hi Maria's boyfriend how do you do well this might be awkward for her because she thought she understood the situation before she knew all of the facts so sorry I jumped to conclusions artists awkward have you ever jumped to conclusions and found out you were wrong about a situation tell me your funny stories in the comments I spilt coffee okay you start a new job it's your first day as a barista in a coffee shop but everything is new you don't know how the coffee machine works you don't know anything how do I make coffee it takes a while to understand something new to learn a new skill right so when you finally understand how something works you can do your job or this new skill easily like it's normal to you you are making coffee like a pro we say that you get the hang of something so in this case he can say I got the hang of it finally it took a lot of practice but I got the hang of it we can replace it with a verb so the verb is make coffee so as a verb you need that in form making coffee I got the hang of making coffee and this can be used in the positive or the negative both are fine so I got the hang of it great but in a negative for example I quit because I couldn't get the hang of it I couldn't learn this new skill because it's learning a new skill that's an ability in the negative you'll probably use couldn't or can't in the present I couldn't get the hang of it I wasn't able to learn this new skill again tell me in the comments is this some new skill that took you a long time to get the hang of is there something that you tried and you couldn't get the hang of it let me know type type type now for me the Korean writing system I can't understand it I am too stupid I'm very very stupid and when you can't understand something it makes no sense to you we have an expression we say this I can't get my head around Korean or I can use the pronoun I can't get my head around it so usually this is in the negative I can't get my head around it because we're talking about the ability to understand it you can use it in a positive way like it took me a really long time to get my head around the language but now I can speak it that's not true I'm still stupid I don't understand Korean sorry the meaning is very similar to get the hang of something but this is very uniquely for something mental so something you understand like a language or a new system perhaps again tell me what can't you get your head around let me know in the comments practise this vocabulary side note yes you can say I can't get my head around Korean or I can't get my head round you have the choice both are fine okay next you take a break from work or school for a week when you come back to work or school you missed a lot of information and now you need to know all of that information that you missed until now so you and everyone else are at the same level of knowledge for this we say sorry I just got back can you bring me up to speed on everything to bring someone up to speed it's just like hey give me the update oh and of course you can say get instead of bring for example hey Maria can you get Allie up to speed on the new changes always Maria things to remember it can be bring it can be get both are fine so you can change the pronoun to whoever needs the update and preposition is on finally what is the update that you need that goes at the end yeah that is an option so you can just say get someone up to speed stop that's fine so if for example you missed last week's video go watch it now get yourself up to speed and finally to make a decision about something for example at work you need to hire a new person you interview lots of people and there's one guy that you really like you really want to hire this guy I mean the job is to chop wood and he has his own choppy thing it's fight he's great he's perfect for the job but your colleague says look I I don't think we should hire a guy from a horror movie for the job just I don't think it's professional so he's giving you advice before you make your decision and he wants to say please acknowledge my advice just before you make any decision take my advice onboard before you hire him okay so to take something on board usually it's advice or information of facts you acknowledge that information before making a decision now this is a very formal thing to say so usually it would only happen in formal situations maybe like this or if you're giving your friend some you know really deep life advice something like that so even though this video is sponsored by Skillshare please don't jump to conclusions like oh he's just
