I took Atlas from Arrow teardrops down to Bend Oregon to see what people are calling the trailer that can do it all while it may be Overkill unlike the other overbuilt trailers on the market this trailer still comes in just shy of 2 000 pounds fits in your garage has Standing Room height and has expanding capability for growing families just because a camper is overbuilt doesn't mean it can't be practical and that's usually my issue with overbuilt trailers what's the point of building a small trailer if it requires you to upgrade your tow vehicle it can't fit in your garage has very minimal space for living and storing your camping gear and costs twice as much as a trailer double its size and as usual stick around to the end of this walkthrough is I'll be sharing the three things I like about this trailer and the three things I think can be improved here we are at Overkill campers this is our so510 model right now we have the elevated Roof System that we're going to introduce today it is our base design it's a 5x10 model and this has the roof system that allows you to stand up and sleep additional people up top super simple design floods out on 500 pound slides supports tons of weight and right here we have the partner stove that's nested into the kitchen itself simple open it up right there with our functioning sink water spout hot and cold water right there and our Galley we have a nice little prep table adjacent to our storage up here so this is our little Pantry area and I will say uh everything in this camper is all composite and aluminum there's zero wood we are used to being around a lot of fluctuating weather so to have uh wood that can you know swell and contract can change the overall size of your camper and how it functions over a lifespan so just above this Prep Station let me close these guys up we have these zargis cases that are also not on the 500 pound sleds that allow for you to remove these you can kind of pack these inside your house before you head out for a trip you're able to remove these and take it down to the fire down to the water side so each camper comes equipped with a 2000 watt inverter as a standard and it's simple as flipping that button on and now you have full 110 power at your interior and exterior and as we rotate to this side you might notice something different that most campers don't have the side slides out so we actually have an entire queen size bed that Nest inside of the camper you can simply slide out the inside to maximize your interior interior room and as we rotate to the back side we can take a little peek into the utility compartment down here where we have a 300 amp hour rely on lithium low temp battery accompanied with victron solar and charge components in there we have the serbo GX with the touch screen hooked up on the inside as well to help aid with your monitoring up front in our lower storage compartment we have housed the 96 liter dual zone snowmaster fridge we chose snowmaster just because of its long Legacy in the industry these were originally designed it was used for medical transport in South Africa so they took that technology with them and uh introduce what we believe to be one of the best fridges on the market you can set this bad boy to fridge fridge fridge freezer freezer freezer one thing that we do like about the snow Masters that the interior skin of it is Aluminum which helps reduce odor absorption as well which is really nice what about the top box top box yeah outside absolutely top box I'm going to slide this in for ease it's got two stages of lock in there top box Is All Storage so so can you open that up for you guys and give you a peek into there so that's kind of a free space for the camper to figure out what they want to do with all that it may be hard to see on video but I could climb in there I mean me and a buddy could fit in there oh yeah without a doubt uh I'd have to do a quick measurement but I don't know the the actual square footage or leader size off the top of my head uh but it's huge up front we have our spare tire cradle kind of a Baja design and we utilize uh Timber and Axle suspension which is a pretty pretty common item for the Overland trailers and with that we have it mated to a aluminum channel chassis so this has all been DOT approved Nitsa approved designed in-house engineered once again our company's name is overkill and this chassis alone is rated for 25 000 pounds which is just a little bit more than than the Box's weight on our left hand side the back side of the fridge compartment we have in here are binar heater system this is a system that we've designed in-house over the last couple years and it serves as a triple function heater the first function would be on-demand hot water the second would be cabin forced heat forced air heat and the third this has the option of radiant heat floor as well so all three of those functions are fueled by diesel combustion chamber and a closed glycol Loop and that's all I'm going to divulge let's hit the arcjac articulating hitch totally totally so if we track around to the front again as we go to the other side of the camper you can see a couple of the items that we utilize we use the arc 500 Jack which we feel is one of the top components that you can buy on the market for your camper we were sold on the promo video where they actually winched trailer through a mud pit which was pretty freaking cool and then if you go forward even more you can see that we utilize the lock and roll hitch system which allows for total articulation while off-roading follow me to the inside we'll open up the main cabin door that just magnetizes to that front box door as well we have a pin right here that's on a momentary lock function you can kind of hear that engage and as you hold this pin in you simply grab the handle here Slide the entire bed in and out wow can you show me that again I'm now saying absolutely so just unlock it and I can slide the entire bed back out and then you don't also have to have the bed out if you're just on like a quick road trip it's late at night so you can kind of stealth Camp as well with the top down and then while it's in its closed position and attached to the tow vehicle power sent through the seven pin also engages a 1200 pound electromagnet so we have a couple little redundancy factors there so our slide is all mechanical no gears we've actually designed the system itself to do one million Cycles at 10 000 pounds so another little tidbit of Overkill that's snuck in uh to our design so yeah Overkill in itself like it explains everything about this trailer right we take pride and and over designing and over engineering things uh but we're here to make them last and we want to see these on the road for generations and with that Overkill what are we looking at here for clearance so right now we're uh we are on a 33 inch tire which allows for 19 inches of ground clearance underneath the chassis and that is once again on the Timber and 3500 HDs and that's with the four inch lift spindle as well to accommodate for that larger Tire all of these are also formed aluminum that are capable with withholding plenty of weight as you can see I'm 220 pounds and I don't think there's any deflection in that step whatsoever so having these roof lights on the side we have them both on the left and right side on different circuits allows us when we're finding that perfect spot in the woods it's super dark allows us for a little bit more uh Clarity you can control them via Bluetooth from your phone so you don't actually have to hop out turn them on then you can also dim them you simply just undo the latch hop inside and then push up the top and let the gas struts do the do the rest so if you take a peek on the inside of the cabin here let me remind you it is only a 5x10 box so it's rather small with its overall dimensions but allowing us to utilize the interior space as much as we can we incorporated the slide mechanism so right now I'm sitting on our slide up bed which is just a few inches narrower than a queen size bed it's 80 inches long by 55 inches wide so it's quite comfortable we utilize a four and a half inch memory foam mattress but you can kind of see how much space I have in here also with the ability to stand up the elevated Roof System opens up a lot more options for foul weather and utilizing you know longer trips and you're not a small guy how tall are you no I'm six one and you look kind of small in this thing yeah I'm six one and a good like 215 good 220 and uh yeah it it definitely fits me quite well my wife and child and I often utilize this this camper for ski trips for uh keeping the whole family warm hitting the slopes and having a nice little Refuge come back to oh yeah I can stand in here too I always forget how large is um what we do not have installed right now is a couple bed panels which allows for additional sleepers up top but with those panels in place you can either enter the camper from the exterior here or simply climb up on the bed onto those panels having the ability to Camp with a larger family especially with the young kids that you don't necessarily want on a rooftop town on the X to the camper it's nice to have that that convenience and safety factor of having your children close along with being able to put your pants on standing up which is really nice we utilize this pass through here for a couple different reasons the first reason is to open up the entire inside make it feel like you have a little bit more connection to the outside another reason is to pass through physically drinks food it's nice to have that open feel and the third reason is that we can actually put a portable AC unit in this opening it's meant to go with the Eco flow wave air conditioner like a less invasive approach as well that's why we've chosen the battery powered one you can take it when you need it if you don't need it leave it at home so let me introduce you to some of our technical stuff on the inside we have our thermostat over here and we also have the victron serbo GX with the touchscreen 50 right there which allows us to monitor charge consumption amp hours all of that is all viewed on that screen as well as the app on your mobile device or tablet so back here we have our portable rotating table which pivots in all sorts of different directions based upon whether you have people sitting at the settee with you you're using this as a mobile workstation you know just kind of entertaining people in some inclement weather just to my right we've got more of our aluminum loud the cabinets but also once again lightweight very functional lots of interior storage here as well so that just allows for us to maximize the the usage of this interior of the camber once again each one of these lights is dimmable and also you can turn them off individually you can just leave one light on and let the rest of your guests get their Beautyrest down below we have one more drawer down here underneath the bed and just beyond it you can't really see but behind this face frame we have a 32 gallon water tank this is a true Four Season camper in the sense that that radiant heat floor will keep that tank from freezing as well and having all the water lines inbound tank inside let's get to those Pros there's a lot to like about this trailer but for me number one is within the name itself Overkill there are a lot of Manufacturers that take pride in over engineering a trailer but what frustrates me though about these other manufacturers is they typically have no regard for the overall weight of the trailer incorporating lightweight composite construction we're using exterior and interior sandwich structural foam and then the the chassis being formed aluminum we're able to save a lot of weight while maintaining structural rigidity yes it's great to have a trailer built to last but if it's double the weight of most small trailers and has an excessive tongue weight in my opinion you've kind of defeated the purpose of a small camper trailer what kind of drove this design being able to tow it with most V6 engines uh we have a slew of 4Runners Old Land Cruisers that don't struggle with it at all with having that dry weight Sub 2000 pounds kind of allows you to Toe with a variety of vehicles now the second Pro and again it's around the concept of Overkill they went overkill on the tires the suspension the overall standing height while at Camp yet it still fits in your garage and tows smaller on the road and they could have used a mechanical slide out to impress that crowd who's really only buying this camper for bragging rights but no they realize less is more in this aspect and for an off-roading trailer keeping those moving Parts simple is King number three and this is a big one the camper may be small when stored and towed but it lives larger than almost every camper we have highlighted on this channel and that's a big statement when you look at just how many walk-through videos we have within our playlist and number four I'm going to throw in a bonus here this trailer is truly Overkill these trailers were built to get you out and away from the crowds and they were built to take a beating we build campers for a company called Rove rentals they're based out of North Carolina so this is actually one of rove's oldest rentals that's been on the road for about three years now Coast to Coast several times with that being said it's it's seen some abuse and use and it's probably been jumped a few times I can hear it in your voice like this gives you confidence like this makes you feel like you know you made the right thing this is crazy to to see what it's been through and we've repaired minor things people treat it like a rental car and it's come back and we're like wow what did you guys do maybe you fell off a ledge or two or like okay and so what was the extent of the worst things you've seen uh the worst things we've ever seen is uh awning failures that's pretty simple just wind a lot of people won't tell you that it failed until you get it back engineer kind of walk through but other than that we've haven't really seen anything fail it's all just been kind of cosmetic minor damages due to people not really caring while they rent now on to the things I would change about this trailer if it was me I would have installed the kitchen to be accessed from the rear of the trailer very similar to what you see on the rks off-road trailer with either a slide out or maybe a more traditional Galley kitchen there in the back that way with the pull of a latch you have an instant awning rear door for coverage I mean you just heard Brandon talk about the rentals coming back in with damaged awnings really you need to give this some thought and we have a whole video about this if you don't believe me like those renters we have damaged a few 270 degree awnings along the way as well okay we're trying to take this off and the wind has picked it up no okay I'm ready to leave this campsite now what do we do so what this means Beyond a longer setup time just to use your kitchen anytime there is high wind you have to be mindful of the awning so much so that you may decide not to put the awning up out of fear of damaging it if there's current high winds or if there are high winds in the forecast now don't get me wrong a lot of you get mad when I say this in the comments Pat you know I love you Pat I do think 270 degree awnings have their place at the campsite I just don't think they should be required to cover your cooking area and while I'm on the subject it sure would be nice to not have to walk around the slide out kitchen to then have to walk to the front of the trailer just to access your fridge number two now correct me if I'm wrong on this one but I don't remember seeing or hearing Brandon mention anything about a pressurized cabin typically in the land of overbuilt especially at this price range this is one of the boxes manufacturers are required to check off for Avid off-road enthusiasts if you're truly pushing this trailer to the limits quality seals and a positive pressure system to keep that dust out would be important to folks from this demographic since we've announced the release of this video we have had people in the community section leave comments around concerns with this business model here's a statement Overkill campers recently released to ease some of these potential concerns while I cannot verify the validity of these concerns as with any trailer I urge you to conduct thorough research I advise you to look through the comments of this video study the forums of current trailer owners as well as forums of disgruntled potential buyers running a small camper business is challenging especially during these challenging times and discont intended customers are not unique to one specific trailer manufacturer however based on my experience the loudest voices often come from customers who have made substantial down payments which in turn increases the pressure for timely builds as I have mentioned in previous videos I advise caution when making large down payments though it is ultimately up to you to decide number three I kind of struggle to find a third issue but there's always something to nitpick here as you can tell from this video I really like this trailer this is a trailer that can fulfill a lot of different camping needs and it does a lot of things well I'm just gonna put on my wannabe Overlander hat here for a moment and just say most hardcore overlanders tend to believe there are better options currently on the market for suspension now on this trailer the timron suspension is nice because it's made here in North America yet others in the industry have moved away from it over the years escapod has their own proprietary suspension you have the beefier setups coming out of Australia and South Africa then you have the trailing armbag suspensions like Bean trailers Cloud suspension system I'm not an expert in this area but what I do know is people like me appreciate the simple Timber and suspension but there are a lot of folks that would say that although the majority of this trailer is overkill the suspension is a bit more middle of the road check out our rks off-road trailer tour here on the left side of the screen or better yet click on one of these two playlists on the right the top is all our trailer walkthroughs and the bottom playlist is specifically off-road trailers as usual make sure you stay safe on the road and we will see you in the next episode
