UltraShift vs. Manual, the 18 speed review for 2019

I always ask for comments and you guys have not disappointed so I'm gonna respond to them by answering one of the biggest questions I get in there to shift or not to shift let's get to it [Music] if there was ever a time or a situation to compare the ultra shift transmission to a normal manual transmission this is it as you can see I'm standing in between two t8 hundredths both of them are the same year they've both got aluminum beds on them they both have 505 horsepower and 1850 foot-pounds of torque from a Cummins engine they both have 18-speed transmissions there's a difference this one has three pedals this one has two so I get a lot of feedback from people talking about the ultra shift doesn't do this or it's slow or whatever so let's answer some of those questions today and is that really the case because we've got almost identical trucks in fact they'd even got the same rear tires on them this is gonna be an interesting one don't you think [Music] [Applause] [Music] whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa guys stop right there I can already see the comments-section lighting up with you didn't shift it right or you didn't skip the right number of gears or you should have been standing on your head when you started the truck with the clutch in and doubled whatever I'm a pretty good driver in fact I've got some trophies that even show that on top of that I get to drive everything that we've got here I Drive a tell Elle's ten speeds I Drive 13s 18s you name it I get in it and drive it so cut me a little bit of slack in there I definitely respect someone that can row through an 18-speed and never skip a beat but I'm not doing it every day like you guys are well that being said let's go for a ride so guys here's how the first part of this test is gonna work pretty simple I've stopped at a rest area right out by the office I'm gonna stop at the end here we're gonna merge with traffic we're gonna see how long it takes me get up 65 miles an hour pretty simple right I'm gonna pull up we're gonna hit a dead stop we're gonna see what happens simple enough right well let's get to it okay we're stopping right with a one-way sign three two one let's go [Music] there's 60 and 65 I've got to say I do love that how when I like I said let off the throttle the Jake's right there fully controlled fully connected it's nice I can see why so many people still love driving a manual transmission and in fact up until my latest car almost all of my cars have been manual transmission yep bad so hyoe routes for you one thing that I think is tough for guys is these trucks really do like to run down low I'm in a thousand 50 rpm right now and I've got that full torque available people always want to spin an engine and it really doesn't help all that much anymore now it's just let it sit in those lower rpms and just pull I really do love the feeling in these old beat cabs it just gives you that old-school just yes super trucker feeling I said it you happy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so here's the moment of truth guys I am once again back at the rest area I'm gonna pull up ahead to stop at the same point where I did before let's see how long it takes to get to 65 you ready let's do this okay here's the spot where I stopped before you ready let's go 20 dirty fifty-five sixty-five I got to be honest with you guys I'm I don't know if it is the right word but I'm interested to get back into the office and compare these two excited isn't the right word because if this thing beats me I don't think you guys are ever gonna let me live it down but see what happens right so at the point I'm recording this voiceover I have not seen the speeds and times yet and I thought the best way to compare these two would be to stick the speedometers right next to each other on the same screen and let's see what happens ready go funny there's 60 no I don't know what your initial reaction to this was but mine was that Waylon Jennings should come over the radio and he should tell me how the Duke boys are suddenly in trouble I'll be honest with you I was completely blown away by this result I felt that it was gonna be a lot closer than people estimated this blew my mind and just so you know which ones which here let me put them in order for you [Music] [Applause] [Music] so now that we've both gone on our drive once again back to back to make sure that we've got a good comparison here let's hear your thoughts go ahead and stick those in the comments below what are my thoughts on this you know I'm gonna say I like them both and I really truly do driving an 18-speed there's really not a whole lot like it it's fun you've got as always joke 17 chances to get it wrong did you pick the right one and really with the torque that these engines create we only got about fourteen chances to get it wrong but still in the same sense you've got options and you've got great control over instant from the foot to the rear tires it's just right there with the ultra shift transmission there's some adaptations you need to make as a driver and I don't think it's as much work as it is just a bit of a change of mindset if you change how you think about what this is going to do and learn what it's going to do it becomes even more second nature than rowing through an 18-speed gearbox so like I said I've got to call a winner in this it is the 18-speed ultra shift the main reason being is less work almost as much control it's easier on the driveline and I can focus on other things in the truck like seeing what's around as
