when did you realize you were or weren't the ugly friend guy in my group of friends in high school 5 feet 6 inches sharp chin bushy eyebrows at 17 already creeping hairline he used to meet girls everywhere school mall movies another friend in the group objectively good-looking guy tall athletic dark hair and bright blue eyes he couldn't meet girls to save his life both guys were really nice and funny we are hanging out at a mall than the shorter guy starts talking with a girl and gets her number she and her group of friends walk away my shorter friend turned to the other guy and said when you realize how good-looking you are or when you stop caring whether they think you're good-looking the rest of us a fact someone told me I looked like my name was Harold I immediately picture a chubby shortish man with premature balding I'm sorry if this is you I always kind of knew that I have this one friend who is truly a stunner she and I went to a football game and when she went to the bathroom I struck up a conversation with a woman near us said woman then introduced us to her brother her boyfriend and another friend of this all-male all of us were cool and chatting about the game for a few minutes until my friend got back I introduced her the friend and the brother didn't talk to me for the rest of the night they had eyes and ears apparently only for my friend my friend is now dating the brother it was almost funny to sit with the other woman and her boyfriend and watch it go down almost people always teased my brothers about their looks but never me I grew up thinking that I must be the most attractive person in the family the truth is that they were just sparing me out of kindness because they assumed I must be insecure when I was forced to take group photos with other people and quickly realized I was the only one who managed to look deformed / vaguely nonhumanoid in every single pic yeah that's my secret talent guys homeless man came up to my friend and I told her how gorgeous she was and turn to me saying and you seem cool to friends all started dating and no guy had even glanced at me friends would try to do me up in MAPP hoop but just kind of grimace at the finished product like my face was still a disappointment when the rest of your friends start shouting about taking group selfies but they don't bother to get you to join friend had just broken up with her boyfriend a month before prom and said we should both just go see a movie since I obviously wouldn't be going with anyone and then she ditched me to go with someone the day ticket sales ended after we made plans sitting at bars and having everyone I came with Gil home with someone while I was left alone friends have long term relationships with rumors of engagements flying around and I'm still single when we would get together and they would start talking about their sexual experiences no one ever bothered to ask me even worse they would sometimes smile awkwardly and apologize well joke's on them because I learned you can't be the ugly friend if you don't have any friends a girl I liked literally thirsting over my friend in front of me nothing is more roof than hearing your crush say they want to [ __ ] your friend when your friend is the pretty one and you're the nice one one of my cousins used to introduce me this way this is my cousin wonder underscore woman under ruse she's the smart one not the pretty one I love that karma caught up to her 19f first week of freshman year in college I went out with all of my girlfriends and we stopped at a gas station so a couple of them could get Todd severe duels too drunk freshmen guys stopped us to flirt and one of them gave hugs to every girl in the group except me my friend went on a rant about how hard it is to have guys constantly wanting to talk to you and how being the main character in life is exhausting and how six years of having guys buy her drinks when she goes out so she doesn't go out anymore meanwhile at my own birthday party a stranger bought everyone else shots but me asterisk asterisk II the ited to clarify that friend was humbler bragging to the maximum sounds obnoxious so sorry about your day you deserve better friends than that my mom still calls me her tubby little munchkin you love me right mom yeah but just as friends moms and literally everyone in my friend group is either married engaged or otherwise in a long-term committed relationship I have a cat I used to be convinced I was the ugly friend but after many years I realized I was pretty but just in a kind of boring way when a stranger came up to me and my friends and said to me Wow you'd be the hottest out of all your friends if you lost the weight it's really depends on who I'm around tbh I'm not ugly but not the hottest either the instance I knew I wasn't the bomb point kombis when I was at a party that was filled with predominantly males there were only three ladies at the party but one girl was very good-looking and they all flocked it was weird and not really a party after they tried to swoop in for the kill I thought they were eventually going to get tired of that but after four hours of sitting alone watching babba took on repeat and no one to talk to I ended up just leaving without telling anybody yeah I would say my confidence took a hit that night I saw it happen once eating the free breakfast in a hotel sharing the breakfast area with what appeared to be a high school sports team coaches and parents / chaperones the team all seemed to be seniors but there was a good sprinkling of some younger kids that I supposed were siblings other children of the parent / chaperones the group was cheerful noisy not annoyingly but a little louder than a similar sized group of adults would be some would rest in sleep wha some in sweats or other casual wear the team was mostly arranged close to the door to the dining area guys coalesced in small groups deep in animated conversation leaving the adults near the buffet area I was sitting near a table occupied by parents / chaperones the noise level abruptly fades to completely silent over about three seconds I look to see what has happened a teenage girl maybe sixteen one of the family members has just walked in wearing what I guess was sleep were running shorts a t-shirt that ended about five inches above the top of the shorts and poofy bunny slippers as she walked across the room she left a stunned silence in her wake evidently the guys knew her well but were now noticing her in a new light admittedly it was indeed a very bright light and they were really noticing about halfway across the room she became aware of a sudden quat and looked back to see what was going on everyone was looking in her direction suddenly not looking directly at her but it's something absolutely fascinating just beyond her naturally she looked back to the front to see what she had been missing nothing glanced down in alarm to see if she had some wardrobe malfunction or something no then what you could see a slow comprehension dawning first her eyes opening wider than a tiny slow grin start one of the parents who was watching sighed resignedly and said quietly and so it begins it was right at the start of grade seven I was friends with a burgeoning skater punk named a nice enough guy but we were polar opposites a like trap I like metal he was tall and skinny I was shorter and chubby he had straight blond hair and I had curly Jew throw burned brown hair he had a symmetrical face I've got a big nose Forest Whitaker eye and a nice big scar under one eye from a dog bite but whatever I wasn't chasing girls yet so beyond keeping clean smelling good and keeping zits under control I wasn't really concerned about my looks we were hanging out at the County Fair we met up with some girls seen you from the public school a blonde and a black haired girl he was chasing after her everything seemed to be going fine until I noticed they would move on to the next thing without telling me after catching up with them a few times I started to suspect they were trying to ditch me confirmation came about ten minutes later when I said something to the effect of hey wait up what am i that hard to be around as a joke they looked at each other and the blonde said something like no you're just too much of an ugly baby to be around to which the black-haired girl and they laughed I just kind of stood there while the three of them walked away that [ __ ] hurt I didn't even see it coming I never hung out were they again despite calling him a few times he either made excuses or never returned my calls I'm black got chubby in middle school never learned how to properly do my hair my mom always did cornrows so I rebelled and straightened only my bangs wore nothing but two baggy flair jeans and band t-shirts that never fit so early other and very early on that I was the ugly friend the token if you will fortunately I've improved lost weight learned how to do my hair and rest myself I'm now proudly a solid Chicago six I was bottom-of-the-barrel unpopular in school I was just a really weird / awkward kid and an easy target for bullies I had no idea I was hot when I got to college guys started hitting on me constantly and I would get angry because I just assumed they were making fun of me and doing as a joke I couldn't possibly believe that I was desirable to anyone it took me years to realize that people were in fact just hitting on me and not making fun of me [Music]
