yo really quick before we get into up to speed i want to show you something you see this donut made this i helped design this it's a brand new car collectible and we've been working on it for over two years now and i'm so excited to finally finally show it to you guys it's called stocky and it's live on kickstarter right now and if enough of you guys pre-order it it's gonna be a real thing i'll talk about it more at the end of this video but the link is below so please consider checking out during or after the video or even right now okay without further ado up to speed type r honda's type r brand is nothing short of revolutionary it changed the world's perception of what a front-wheel drive car is capable of and it remains a performance benchmark today the integra type r's 1997 us debut was a shot in the arm for america's import tuning scene and that boom inspired a cultural juggernaut called the fast and the furies his family car manufacturers around the globe took notice deciding maybe it wasn't a bad idea to bring their own performance cars to the u.s market talking about subaru and the wrx in 2002. then domestic manufacturers rolled out hot versions of their own compacts like chevy's cobalt ss and dodge's neon srt4 honda's type r badge may be the most influential automotive nameplate in history so how did it come about and why was it so successful and where is it now this is the story of three men whose passion for driving changed the world this is everything you need to know to get up to speed on honda type r [Music] thanks to cardparts.com for sponsoring today's video just like that bud keep coming am i close my cousin clumsy carl is in town for the summer and all he wants to do is get better at driving so today i'm teaching him how to parallel park i'm scared that i'm going to hit you like i did meemaw the judge decided that wasn't your fault bud you got plenty of room we all have a friend like clumsy carl someone that you don't trust with your car oop that was the break and with a clumsy carl you're gonna be spending a lot of money on repair parts that's why i trust carparts.com they're a one-stop shop for all your collision maintenance and and do a better job if you like this video let youtube know hit that like button it was all the drink so it's hero honda the visionary founder of honda motor company dreamed of racing in 1961 this up-and-coming motorcycle manufacturer demonstrated an impressive ability to make dreams come true by conquering the world's most dangerous motorcycle race the isle of man tt it's a terrifying blast down public roads of a tiny island in the irish sea this insane road race was honda's entry point to racing that's like deciding you want to try out karate and you enter the moral combat tournament which is real fatality after just two years of trial and error honda went pog on the tt taking first through fifth in both the 125 cc and 250 cc classes via sustained 15 000 rpm attacks with their 2rc 143 and rc 162 competition bikes a mission accomplished it's family now that honda was killing it with motorcycle racing the next logical step was to move on to cars and again why not shoot for the top in 1962 honda factory quality manager hidio sagira received the note from r d director yoshihito kudo we're planning to compete in f1 and i want you to oversee the project segura wrote back what is f1 i've seen some photographs about it before but i don't know what it is please tell me what f1 is well the truth is i don't know either but it doesn't matter because everyone's a beginner at first that's how honda entered f1 honda learned something in their quest to conquer the isle of man that came to define the company's philosophy forever more revs equals more victory well done now with this in mind honda engineers designed a 1.5 liter dual overhead cam v12 powered formula one racer a whole year before they released their first production road car the honda ra 271 made its formula in 1964 wearing a white paint job with a red circle on the nose it was a fitting livery considering that this was the first japanese car to ever compete in formula one a huge milestone for a country still recovering from the ravages of world war ii honda's first year in f1 wasn't as successful as their stint at the isle of man the team retired from all three races that they entered that season but honda took what they learned and applied it to their second car the ra 272 was a lighter faster fuel-injected precision tool that made 230 her spurs at a very honda light 13 000 rpm driver richie ginther piloted this car to victory at the 1965 mexican grand prix finally earning honda their first four wheeled win and then ivory white paint job what got a new name championship white regular white championship white see the difference oh hey just like my integra type r you have an integer type r i have a lot of hotdogs that you don't know about so that was cool and now we're in the 80s honda is one of the biggest car companies in the world they did not get there by building sports cars but each hero honda still believed that racing was a fantastic training ground for designers and engineers with honda motors returning to formula one in 1983 after a 15-year hiatus exotic sports cars were on the old man's mind and in his new capacity as honda motor company's supreme advisor that's the title of the job the things on this old man's mind were taken seriously so seriously that honda execs reached out to the legendary italian design house pininfarina for help building a concept sports car the same design house behind the ferrari testerosa the lancia037 and everyone's favorite poster car the volvo c70 wow in 1984 honda unveiled the hp x concept a mid engine rear-wheel drive exotic that looks kind of like a giant cyberpunk loafer on wheels but in a good way at the same time a team of engineers were fooling around with a mid-engine rear wheel drive converted civics and crx test mules serious business was alok as you detective types might have probably already definitely figured out we're talking about the development of the nsx which stands for new sports car unknown horrible with the x representing the unknown variable that's freaking algebra dude that's basic maths we did a whole episode on the nsx back in the day so we're not going to go that deep today but you can't talk about the type r without talking about the nsx ivana hadn't decided to build the nsx type r wouldn't be a thing in fact neither would exist without mr shigeru uahara one of the most revered chassis engineers in automotive history we're talking about the father of the nsx the type r badge and the s2000 i mean come on that's like having the three ninjas of cars ulahar was named development manager of the nsx project in 1985 an absolute dream for a car geek like him he and nsx chief designer masahito nakano worked with honda motorsport engineers and several honda f1 and indy car drivers to make mr honda's exotic dreams come true when the nsx debuted in 1990 people went absolutely freaking crazy dude they loved it they were like what that's a honda that's not a flower no way it's gotta be a lamborghine ah you just blew my 1990s mind and i'm just coming back from watching three ninjas for the first time it's beautiful design paid homage to european exotics but it was way more comfortable to drive than something like a countach and it could scoot all right it's horsepower 3 liter v6 sat in the exotic correct position behind the driver's seat and it drove the exotic correct wheels the body made of aluminum the driving dynamics superb at least that's what most people outside of honda thought but back in the honda corporate offices some weren't satisfied and uaharasan was one of them in a 2020 interview with honda japan uwa harassan compared the nsx to a well-rounded honors student pretty good at lots of stuff but truly exceptional at nothing he longed to build a version of the car that would ignite his heart and thus development began on a very spicy nsx with one goal in mind a car that you could drive to the track crush laps all day go and get a tiny coffee out of a can and then drive home and put in your garage at night a street car for racing an n s x type r now developing a circuit ready nsx uh road car wasn't easy let me tell you thanks in part to the infamous japanese auto manufacturers gentlemen's agreement that's come up in many up to speeds i think i gotta handle this one uh long story short 1989 japanese car companies agreed to limit power to a state of 276 horsepower across the board in response to the japanese government's concerns about rising vehicular fatality rates but if you watch up to speed as much as being my boys those rules are about to be broken this agreement forced uahara to sharpen the nsx's performance without upping the power and intentionally or not it defined the type r recipe for years to come first order business remove as much weight as possible the nsxr is an entire lebron james lighter than the standard model that is 264 pounds uahara and his team removed the car stereo air conditioning power steering power mirrors cruise control traction control central locking system all the basketballs in the trunk and much of its sound editing material was also thrown in the trash they swapped in carbon recaro seats a lightweight momo steering wheel lighter wheels and even a thinner rear windscreen thinner glass all this followed lotus founder colin chapman's performance maxim simplify and add lightness uahara and his crew took this so seriously they even put in skinnier carpet the spicy nsx type r received a close ratio gearbox a higher final drive ratio for improved acceleration a re-tuned suspension chassis stiffening bars improved arrow and a super neato titanium gear knob that gets so freaking hot you guys and they didn't leave that three liter v6 alone no way boy the whole thing was hand balanced and blueprinted just like a jay-z album and honda's formula one engines honda quoted power's figures at a convenient 276. all of the agreement but rumor has it the tune 6 made closer to 290 hertz purse oops oops in another type r defining move honda decided that their race car for the road should pay homage to their motorsport history so they painted the car the same color as their 1965 grand prix winning f1 car championship white and they added red and honda badges and a nod to the cars super simple livery which alluded to the japanese flag hana made less than 500 nsx type bars between 92 and 95 and of course they were only available in japan the spicy nsx was a hit with circuit-minded drivers and uahara-san was finally satisfied with his first bore son but then he took a look at the new third generation integra and he was like i bet i can make that better too with executive blessings uharasan assembled a team to develop a spicy integra type r unifying the project under one goal a one minute eight second lap at scuba circuit for perspective pro driver kichi sashura ever heard of him clocked a 108 there in a fire breathing all-wheel drive monster r-32 nissan skyline gtr now back then the idea of a front-wheel drive car clocking a lap time like that was laugh out loud absurd now this just lit a fire under uh horizon's butt now there's something that you need to know about my boy shigeru okay he likes his cars loose as in balance towards oversteer to speak in broad terms front wheel drive cars are prone to understeer aka the front wheels keep playing straight ahead when you want to turn this is oversteer that's what he's looking for this is understeer no fun for anybody really needless to say nixing understeer was a main point of focus in the integra type r development uahara and his team dropped a helical limited slip differential into the itr to ensure proper distribution of power to the front wheels i.e they both spin and they tune the suspension to oversteer with a lift of the throttle something called liftoff oversteer that helps the car rotate in twisty bits which it did eerily well like nolan did when he joined the mortal kombat tournament honda engineer hideki kakanuma then 25 will never forget his first experience in an integra type r test mule i remember running through scuba thinking wow at that final corner you can turn the car with the throttle i was very impressed as common sense at the time held such things weren't possible in a front-wheel drive car now remember this name because we're going to talk about kakanuma later with understeer successfully banished to the shadow realm uahara applied the full nsxr treatment to the integra drop the weight gain the revs and stiffen things up the integra type r is 98 pounds lighter than a standard integra strategic seam welding and front and rear chassis braces make the unibody extra rigid improved stopping comes from nsx size brakes mounted behind the lightweight aluminum wheels and a lightweight flywheel and close ratio gearbox pep up acceleration and make it easier to stay in the power band which hovers in the typical honda spot weigh the hell up on the tack the integra type r's hand built high compression 1.8 liter v-tech four-cylinder made 195 horsepower at a stratospheric high 8 000 rpm that's a record setting 108 naturally aspirated horsepower per liter in a car that weighs barely more than 2 300 pounds now the spicy integra type bar was released to the japanese public in 1995 and was easily identifiable by its bright red interior and iconic functional rear wing it was available in seven colors including the type r standard championship white the type r coupe came to the us and uk roads in 1997 but the japanese kept the extra cool stand version for themselves because even when they share they don't share maybe the most impressive thing about the integra type r was its lap time at the scuba circuit one minute nine seconds just short of the 108 goal but still beyond belief of what was possible at the time honda proved that they had a winning formula for fast regardless of which wheels were being driven in fact the first generation integer type r holds a title as the winningest chassis in the history of world touring car challenge to this day wisconsin-based real-time racing campaign two stripped down lightly modified integra type rs in the series from 1997 to 2001 pulling down a record-breaking 23 race win five drivers championships and four manufacturers championships this is like my childhood this is before youtube i remember watching these iconic white and orange integras beat up on m3s on speed vision back in the day they were freaking unstoppable the integra type r success had the rest of honda's model teams clamoring for spicy versions of their own cars give me a spicy version i want the next spicy version get in line i'm next for the spice and with that uahara sun's passion c grew into a whole new kind of passion fruit on the honda passion tree this image does not represent the true size of an actual honda passion tree now what would this mean for a crew that defines success in lap times would the spice get diluted well if the first civic type r was ending your indicator there was nothing to worry about okay uahara and the spicy crew gave the 97 civic hatchback the same treatment as the integra 66 pounds of weight reduction a seam welded chassis and performance tuned suspension a close ratio gearbox a helical lsd and a cool titanium shift knob that got so hot and the piece the resistance a hand ported 1.6 liter vtec 4 making 182 cosmic clydesdales at a ridiculous 8 200 rpm i have seen things no horse should see that's 113 hers per liter in a 2 300 pound hatchback that is another naturally aspirated horsepower per liter record the og civic type r was the real deal honda sold more than 15 000 of them from 97 to 2000 but only in japan snubbed again with three absolute bangers under their collective belt honda had the type r sauce recipe perfected so why not try it on everything and so they did making a succession of cars lighter stiffer and just a pinch more powerful let's have a look at the menu oh yes the 1998 accord type r first one built at the swindon factory in the uk a very proper type r sedan that was only available in europe the european huh all right very very tasty here we have the jdm version of that one the torneo euro r now yes that is a weird name for a car not sold in europe cool car but some said it's not spicy enough to be considered a true type r i want spicy yep down here we have the second gen civic type r from 2001 a very very good vintage that was great yeah that was nice european journalists say this one was the best of the bunch just the right balance of heat and flavor then we have the second gen integra type r also from 2001. quicker than the first but personally i prefer the first one but still a very proper type r again 2001 was a very good year oh sounds like a good year we have the 2007 european civic type r more weight but no extra power no limited slip and no double wishbone rear suspension the critics were not happy with this one i don't recommend it doesn't sound very spicy at all oh but this one this one is very good the jdm 2007 civic type r sedan lighter stiffer more powerful than the uk car lsd and double wishbone suspension on board doing it right this is the last naturally aspirated type r and the last one built in japan um it is absolute fire so many choices ah [Music] i think i'll have the chicken tenders sugar uahara's focus shifted away from type r after the integra's 1995 debut not because he was over it but because honda green lit his dream project a rear wheel drive roadster yet to be named the s2000 uahar assan dreamed of building a roadster since he was just a wee little boy and young honda suspension engineer hideki kakanuma from before shared a similar dream now following those dreams led to his career at honda and that unforgettable experience hot lapping and integra type our test car six years earlier now at that moment on that lap he realized his ultimate goal to succeed uaharasan as the head of type r and now he'd been selected to work side by side with his hero on the roadster project of his dreams the most exciting honda since the original nsx needless to say hadeki killed it on the s2000 and passed the engineering vibe check so honda moved him over to vehicle dynamic development for sports models this came with a big step toward his ultimate goal a chance to work alongside our harveston on the second generation nsx type r the most important type r to date the original nsx was a huge inspiration for kakanuma-san as a starry-eyed engineering student and when he started at honda in 1991 he'd heard about a skunk quirks hardcore nsx project so here he was working on its successor with his hero shoving his hands and everything from suspension tuning to aerodynamics what is this a freaking disney movie when the new nsxr was released to the unsuspecting roads of europe and japan in 2002 it screamed into everyone's hearts like a werewolf with his wiener caught in a vending machine light and eager and sharp as a razor the second gen nsxr was even better than the first one my only criticism no pop-up headlights but i'm not gonna i'm not gonna be mad about it okay go to therapy uahara kakanuma and their team adhered strictly to the original recipe of balancing strengthening and lightning lightning lightning 13 miles 170 corners 7 minutes 50.63 seconds honda ushered in a new type r era with a blistering run around the infamous green hell the nurburgring 2015 honda civic type r set the lap record for front wheel drive production car the next fastest competitor the renault mcgain rs275 trophy r lost its nurburgring trophy by four seconds table for one at gapplebees honda reworked the high revving 2-liter iv tech 4 from the last civic type r to accept boost and boy did it ever the uk built 4th gen ctr put down 306 horsepowers more than twice the power of its predecessor but that turbo power came at the expense of the most defining characteristics of high performance hondas high reps and yes it sucks that we'll probably never see another 9 000 rpm naturally aspirated honda but modern safety standards have made cars heavier requiring more power and more torque to move them and modern fuel efficiency standards punish gas guzzlers turbocharged direct injection engines make more power without tanking fuel economy so times change and if you don't change with them you get left in dust and you don't spell dust with an r because then you have durst yeah and it's not dust anymore it's limp biscuit think about it now why europe geeked about the return of the proper type r a brand new one was already in development and our friend hideki was finally at the helm of honda's spice factory kakanuma-san had experienced the frustration of developing different type r's for different markets and he was done with that crap okay he was freaking done with it okay the new civic type r would be a global car that's right after 16 years of teary-eyed longing type er was coming back tomorrow electronically adjustable suspension technology largely made a global civic type r possible average road quality is so drastically different in places like japan smooth as glass europe smooth as sandpaper and the us completely by dinosaurs it's so different than hana couldn't build one ctr to rule all lands without it i reviewed a new civic type r back in 2018 and the car in comfort mode felt like you were driving just you know a normal civic but you click over into r mode you're ready to set a lap record which i did handily so besides the trick suspension what makes the newest type r so good well hot take it's so good because it's still front wheel drive the honda's most potent competitors i'm talking the focus rs and the golf r are both all-wheel drive all-wheel drive is heavy lightness is always better a honda approved this in 2017 with another nurnberg ring front-wheel drive production car record 7 minutes 43.8 seconds 22 and a half seconds faster than a focus rs a car with 44 more horsepower and two more driven wheels the honda recently announced the 11th gen civic and with it a new type r set to debut in late 2022 with hideki at the helm car enthusiasts the world over can rest easy knowing the spice is still in the right hands shiguru uahara once jokingly said that a person whose enthusiasm for driving outweighs their sense of reason would be the best person to take the type r brand into the future and there's some truth to that reason and passion aren't natural bedfellows but too much of one without the other breeds chaos or worse apathy life then is about finding the right amount of books to give it's not easy but when you nail it everyone takes notice the type our story revolves around the obsessive pursuit of balance more often than not shiguru uahara hideki kakanumi and the countless engineers designers and drivers behind that iconic badge nailed it the world noticed and the world changed it's family are you a fan of the type r or just cool cars in general have you ever felt like something
