the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all brothers and sisters we are happy to have you with us this morning as we raise our voices in praise to almighty god we welcome those physically present here in mary shrine and those who join us at home through our live stream broadcast and we remind those who are in mary shrine that you must keep your face mask on covering both your nose as well as your mouth for the entirety of mass please no this is not our rule this is the rule of the dc government for public places and we appreciate your cooperation let us now acknowledge our sins and to repair ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned and in my thoughts and in my words and what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sin and bring us to everlasting life amen living god who in the abundance of your kindness surpass the merits and the desires of those who entreat you pour out your mercy upon us to pardon what conscience dreads and to give what prayer does not dare to ask through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever [Music] a reading from the book of genesis the lord god said it is not good for the man to be alone i will make a suitable partner for him so the lord god formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them whatever the man called each of them would be its name the man gave names to all the cattle all the birds of the air and all wild animals but none proved to be a suitable partner for the man so the lord god cast a deep sleep on the man and while he was asleep he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh the lord god then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man when he brought her to the man the man said this one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh this one shall be called woman for out of her man this one has been taken that is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife and the two of them become one flesh the word of the lord [Music] [Music] may the lord bless us [Music] who walk in his ways [Music] your mind shall be like a fruitful of yours [Music] the man blessed who fears the lord the lord bless you from [Music] is is [Music] may you see your children's children [Music] is [Music] a reading from the letter to the hebrews brothers and sisters he for a little while was made lower than the angels that by the grace of god he might taste death for everyone for it was fitting that he for whom and through whom all things exist in bringing many children to glory should make the leader of their salvation perfect through suffering he who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin therefore he is not ashamed to call them brothers the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark the pharisees approached jesus and asked is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife they were testing him he said to them in reply what did moses command you they replied moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her but jesus told them because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment but from the beginning of creation god made them male and female for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh so they are no longer two but one flesh therefore what god has joined together no human being must separate in the house the disciples again questioned jesus about this he said to them whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her and if she divorces her husband and marries another she commits adultery and the people were bringing children to him that he might touch them but the disciples rebuked them when jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them let the children come to me do not prevent them for the kingdom of god belongs to such as these amen i say to you whoever does not accept the kingdom of god like a child will not enter it then he embraced them and blessed them placing his hands on them the gospel of the lord the pharisees question to jesus in today's gospel is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife was not just an innocent inquiry by a group of perplexed believers rather the pharisees were looking for a way to trap jesus in his own words although the question was formulated as if a simple yes or no answer would suffice their question involved complex interpretations of hebrew law in addition if jesus answered one way he could be accused of discrediting the reproach of herod by john the baptist for divorcing his wife and marrying his sister-in-law if jesus agreed with john then jesus would become the target of herod's anger so jesus is in what we would call a catch-22 situation no matter what he says he is going to be wrong however jesus does not allow himself to be caught in this trap instead he uses the encounter to bring the discussion to another level and take advantage of the moment to speak of god's desire to unite every person in his love by trying to trick jesus with a sensitive legislative question the pharisees had missed the entire point about god's plan for marriage and so jesus takes his questioners back to the beginning making reference to today's first reading from the book of genesis when god created men and women in his own image and likeness and established that in marriage the two would become one flesh jesus words in today's gospel can sound quite harsh especially if you have been or are going through a divorce or if the marriage of a family member or close friend has broken apart experience tells us that divorce is a traumatic reality that can leave deep and lasting wounds not only for the couple involved but for family and friends as well we hope that when people are united in marriage the marriage will last and what do when it does not for whatever reason there's great hurt there's great pain jesus gesture in today's gospel of embracing and blessing the little child reminds us that in marriage jesus embraces and blesses the couple but it also reminds us that jesus embraces and blesses people who suffer for whatever reason people who are in pain whether it is because of separation and divorce or because of any one of the many difficulties that life brings as pope francis mentioned during his angelus address earlier today in rome the difficulties and situations that reveal our weakness are privileged opportunities to experience god's grace to experience god's love that in dark and holy moments god's tenderness towards us is even more present and this tenderness can give us peace today's gospel teaches us that jesus wants to help mend help men whatever wounds we have no matter how we receive them he wants to reconcile us he wants to give us peace he wants to transform us and to use us to proclaim his kingdom no matter what our past or our present circumstances because no matter what no matter what situation we find ourselves in we are always god's children and jesus always wants to put his arms around us and give us his blessing never ever forget that i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures yes he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken to the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and allow the life of the world to come amen gathered as one family in faith we now present these our requests before god our heavenly father for our holy father pope francis and all bishops that their witness to the gospel will renew the faith of the people of god let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that world leaders will work together to provide care and protection from my immigrants and refugees and share responsibility in helping them to build new lives let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that on this respect life sunday a greater awareness for the sanctity of all human life will grow ever deeper in the hearts of people and nations throughout the world let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all in abusive relationships that they may experience god's love and find the courage and support to seek help and free themselves from domestic violence let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for an increase in vocations to the priesthood diaconate and consecrated life that many will answer god's call with generous hearts let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all the personal intentions that we bring to this mass as well as those needs entrusted to the shrine by our benefactors and pilgrims let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that our family and friends who have died may now know the fullness of peace and joy in god's kingdom forever let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer heavenly father hear their prayers your children place before you may your unconditional love help us to bring your gift of life to all we meet through christ our lord amen we invite you to join in support of the ministry of the basilica of the national shrine during the unprecedented days where our ministry has been greatly limited your contributions are all the more appreciated thank you for being as generous as your means allow [Music] which you are pleased to redeem us through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts [Music] let us give thanks to the lord our god [Music] it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you lay the foundations of the world and have arranged the changing of times and seasons you formed man in your own image and set humanity over the whole world in all its wonder to rule in your name over all you have made and forever praise you in your mighty works through christ our lord and so with all the angels we praise you as in joyful celebration we are [Music] heaven and earth [Music] blessed is [Music] so you are indeed holy lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] we proclaim your death [Music] as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to a second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognize in the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the sins on whose constant intercession and your presence we rely for unfailing help may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and wilton our bishop the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion o merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say [Music] our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against thoughts and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our day that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the
