the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] is [Music] my keys [Music] [Music] my eyes [Music] gloria in ex chelsea stay oh [Music] oh [Music] me [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] let us pray oh god who manifest your almighty power above all by pardoning and showing mercy bestow we pray your grace abundantly upon us and make those hastening to attain your promises heirs to the treasures of heaven through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of numbers the lord came down in the cloud and spoke to moses taking some of the spirit that was on moses the lord bestowed it on the seventy elders and as the spirit came to rest on them they prophesied now two men one named eldad and the other medad were not in the gathering but had been left in the camp they too had been on the list but had not gone out to the tent yet the spirit came to rest on them also and they prophesied in the camp so when a young man quickly told moses eldad and midad are prophesying in the camp joshua son of nun who from his youth had been moses's aide said moses my lord stop them but moses answered them are you jealous for my sake would that all the people of the lord were prophets would that the lord might bestow his spirit on them all the word of the lord [Music] the precepts of the lord give joy to the heart the priesthood [Music] the love of the lord is perfect refreshing the soul [Music] with us [Music] the fear of the lord is pure enduring forever [Music] of the lord [Music] though your servant is careful of them very diligent in keeping them [Music] the reasons [Music] from want in sin especially restrain your servant let it not rule over [Music] our priesthood a reading from the letter of saint james come now you rich weep and wail over your impending miseries your wealth has rotted away your clothes have become moth eaten your gold and silver have corroded and that corrosion will be a testimony against you it will devour your flesh like a fire you have stored up treasures for the last days behold the wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying aloud and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the lord of hosts you have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter you have condemned you have murdered the righteous one he offers you no resistance the word of the lord [Music] you oh [Music] your word o lord is truth consecrate us in the truth [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you lord at that time john said to jesus teacher we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we try to prevent him because he does not follow us jesus replied do not prevent him there is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me for whoever is not against us is for us anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to christ amen i say to you will surely not lose his reward whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin it would be better for him if a great millstone was put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea if your hand caused you to to sin cut it off it is better for you to enter into life maim then with two hands to go into gehenna into the unquenchable fire and if your foot cause you to sin cut it off it is better for you to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into gehenna and if your eyes cause you to sin pluck it out better for you to enter into the kingdom of god with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into kahina where their worms do not die and the fire is not quenched the gospel of the lord i heard on the radio yesterday that sunset now occurs at 7 00 pm and here we are already at the end of september the temperature here in washington is cooler the aroma of autumn and everything associated with fall is in the air our days will get shorter our nights will get longer and as the liturgical year once again draws to a close our scripture readings will focus on the end times judgment and the kingdom of god now we need to be careful in these familiar and modern times not to miss the point because in our scripture readings for today we see that there are those who miss the point in the first reading joshua protests to moses that eldad and midad were not present when the spirit of god came and rested upon the elders so they should not be prophesying moses essentially tells joshua that he's missing the point saying would that all the people of the lord were prophets along comes john in the gospel who protests to jesus that someone not in their company was using the power of his name and jesus essentially tells him that he's missing the point whoever is not against us is for us he says now what is the point perhaps we might think of it this way as we reflect on our own journey of faith how are we doing in our preparation for our personal end of time experience namely our death if jesus returned today how many of us would be comfortable with him judging how we are doing with the father's creation with the gift of life with a gift of faith would we be prepared today to enter into the kingdom of god now these questions are not meant to drag us down or put us all on some sort of guilt trip quite the contrary for each of us is called to live each day to the fullest it's how we interpret living to the fullness that bears examining chasing after material things is not living to the fullness but chasing after the things of god is now james in the second reading drives this point home for us today reminding us that earthly treasures have no value and will not last that injustice toward others is known to god and will serve among other things as testimony against us now having a great house a new car and the latest technological mobile device are nice nice things to have having a close relationship with god our spouse our children parents and neighbors is even better there's nothing that says we can't have both however the things we pursue cannot come at the expense of the relationships in our lives most importantly our relationship with god as catholics we recognize and are reminded that our earthly existence is temporary as we look toward with hope our return to the presence of god and we need to behave toward others in such a way that respects human dignity and respects their image made in god's likeness we are all called we are called on to follow the path that god laid out for us and heed the example of christ who endured the cross despising its shame and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of god as christians as modern disciples of christ it is our responsibility and mission to welcome the stranger among us particularly on this world day of migrants and refugees we pray for the strangers in our midst for those who are forced to flee from their homes we pray that all may find strength in our concern for justice and that they feel the warmth of our love you see building our relationship with god and neighbor is necessary and important for all of us now more than ever joshua missed that point in his assumption that where eldad and midad physically stood was more important than where they stood with god john missed that point in his assumption that if the man driving out demons in jesus name did not have a visible relationship with jesus then he must not have any relationship to him at all we you and i have no excuse if we miss the point you and i know that our relationship with jesus and our relationship with god the father through jesus is the foundation of everything else if our relationship with god is strong then other relationships in our lives can and will grow stronger jesus says in today's gospel that even if someone gives just a cup of water to a thirsty neighbor in christ's name he will not lose his reward reflect for a moment on what that means in our life of faith every time we forgive every time we donate to a worthy or humanitarian cause every penny that's offered in the collection basket every piece of clothing or donation of food that we give to the poor every visit to whom to someone who is sick or alone every prayer and word of comfort consolation instruction and guidance every single action that we perform in our christian efforts to love god and neighbor is noticed remembered and delighted in by our lord jesus christ in other words starting today what can we do to bring the love of god to others if our relationship with god is strong then our relationships with others can and will grow stronger then too can we be prophets for the lord ambassadors for christ performing mighty deeds in his name and when the day of our death comes and we have to answer the question are you prepared today to enter into the kingdom of god we can answer uses using jesus's own words because i belong to christ amen i will surely not lose his reward i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds in the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen mindful that god our father hears the prayers of those who call upon him in faith let us now present our needs and petitions that through the grace of the eucharist all members of the church will grow in deeper awareness of god's presence and love let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our country that we may be united in building a society in which all people have the opportunity to live with dignity and hope let us pray to the r lord hear our prayer that on this day world day of migrants and refugees all people of good will may be strengthened in their outreach to refugees and victims of human trafficking and to those who are forcefully displaced from their homeland homelands because of conflict natural disaster persecution and extreme poverty let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer that parents may teach their children respect for god's commands and encourage them to live the virtuous in their own daily lives let us pray to the lord that many will have the courage to live out the gospel in the world in vocations to the priesthood the accurate and religious life let us pray to the lord for the needs we hold in our hearts and for the special intentions entrusted to the national shrine by our pilgrims and benefactors especially those enrolled in the shrine prayer of guild novena let us pray to the lord that god will grant eternal life to all those who have died and gone before us in faith let us pray to the lord father hear the prayers of your people and give us what you have inspired us to ask you for in faith through christ our lord we invite you to join in support of the ministry of the basilica of the national shrine during the unprecedented days where our ministry has been greatly limited your contributions are all the more appreciated thank you for being as generous as your means allow lord [Music] me [Music] uh [Music] for the king of [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] foreign [Music] is [Music] oh is [Music] is [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] [Music] i am foreign [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father grant us o merciful god that this our offering may find acceptance with you and that through it the wellspring of all blessing may be laid open before us through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for through his paschal mystery he accomplished the marvelous deed by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race a royal priesthood a holy nation a people for your own possession to proclaim everywhere your mighty works for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the heart [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting up your sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] we proclaim your death therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs with all the saints on whose constant in constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and wilton our bishop the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion o merciful father gather to yourself all to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the
