It's not faster than normal movement, and he's not actually accelerating at all. He's simply moving to the right, then briefly tapping left and jumping to the right. He explains it here.
It actually is a faster acceleration than just walking right if you do the input fast enough, iirc Mario has some pretty weird physics with moving backwards in the air
