into eight interesting food facts you've always wanted to know bananas everyone has a favorite fruit maybe it's a juicy orange and refreshing peach or a crunchy Apple despite having these flavorful choices millions of people prefer the humble banana the average American eats 100 bananas a year which equates to almost one every three days and it's not really a surprise because as well as being delicious bananas are packed full of nourishment inside each mouthful you'll find energy giving carbohydrates and gut loving fiber and heart-healthy potassium and that's just the start of it did you know that you've probably been eating bananas wrong your entire life when you eat a banana chances are you remove the peel pick off the stringy parts and dive right in whether you cut your banana into slices or eat it a mouthful at a time it doesn't really matter but you should be leaving the stringy parts on because they're actually really good for you they might look disgusting and taste slightly more bitter than the rest of the fruit but the health benefits you can get by eating the string are immeasurable these unwanted stringy bits are actually called phloem bundles which actually sounds quite cute and despite the fact many of us flick them away these strands actually contain loads of fiber potassium vitamin A and vitamin b6 he also probably didn't know that phloem is a tissue found in all plants and is responsible for the transporting of nutrients to the fruit they are essentially banana veins now we realize this doesn't make them sound any more delicious but we promise eating them is worthwhile what's even more impressive is that the phloem bundles can help determine whether or not banana is ripe and ready to eat if you peel a banana and the phloem bundles stay tight then it is under ripe not only does this mean the banana will be dry and bland but it means the banana won't be as healthy for you as most of the nutrients have yet to be distributed into the fruit so make sure your bananas are stringy and while we're on the topic of bananas there's something else you should know in an ideal world you'd eat the peels - they're already eaten in various cultures around the world and actually have a high percentage of vitamin b6 and b12 as well as magnesium and potassium they also contain some fiber and protein however if you want to try snacking on a banana peel we recommend you scrub it first this is to remove any pesticides and if you want to eat the peel without gagging try boiling frying or roasting it or blend it up with the rest of your banana for the ultimate healthy smoothie but bananas aren't the only food with mysterious and often valuable secrets here are a few more that will no doubt shock and surprise you you might never look at these foods the same way again honey honey is magical besides it's delicious taste it's pretty much the only food that does not spoil you heard us right honey never goes bad if you don't finish off the jar it can outlive your children and even your grandchildren and this has nothing to do with weird additives it's the exact opposite reason honey is a sugar you may have heard all sorts of things about the health benefits of substituting honey for sugar which may or may not be true and while honey isn't the same as regular granulated white sugar it's still a sugar nonetheless this makes a huge difference to the lifespan of a jar of honey because sugars are hygroscopic which means they don't contain much water in their natural state and very few microorganisms can survive without water one thing that sets honey apart from other sugars is its acidity honey's pH is between three and four point five which repels anything trying to make a home in honey the oldest honey ever found was unearthed in the country of Georgia and dates back over five thousand years which means that contrary to what most food base knowledge would tell you you could technically eat this honey even though it's older than Christ however there is one small caveat that you should know about before you start chowing down on ancient be secretion honey has to be kept in a sealed container and left in a dry space so if you've been storing honey unsealed and in a damp space it's best to leave it alone Oh a stirs if the idea of eating banana skin or 5,000 year old honey grosses you out wait until you've heard about oysters they're somewhat gross looking so you might not have tried them but if you have keep in mind that they were probably alive when you gobbled them down this is because these little critters deteriorate fast so restaurants serve them as fresh out of the ocean as possible and that generally means while they are still breathing sure they'll be just as lifeless as if they weren't alive anymore however they're still functioning fully this goes for oysters served at landlocked restaurants and retail stores too some varieties of this shellfish can survive out of the water for up to two weeks if kept properly chilled and moist in fact due to health regulations this is the only way they're allowed to be served poi stirs are stored under particularly strict conditions because once they pass away they are no longer safe to eat raw oysters can carry Vibrio vulnificus a bacteria that can cause flesh-eating disease this bacteria is more likely to spread when the oyster dies which is why it's crucial to keep them alive right until the moment before they're eaten in fact people have passed away from eating oysters that have passed away too long before being served so before we move on to our next weird food fact we'll leave you with some good advice for next time you're eating oysters if the shell closes the animal is alive and safe to buy if the shell is gaping open or does not close after tapping it the animal is deceased and may contain dangerous bacteria nutmeg nutmeg may be the perfect addition to your hot beverage but don't sprinkle on too much eating too much nutmeg can produce the same effects as a hallucinogen it turns out that consuming too much nutmeg can cause a strange combination of symptoms including out-of-body sensations nausea dizziness and sluggish brain activity Nutmeg contains marisa-san a natural compound that has mind-altering effect if ingested in large doses the buzz can last one to two days for this reason large numbers of people have taken to consuming nutmeg in stronger quantities than usual but it comes with a risk about 30 minutes to an hour after taking large doses of nutmeg people usually have severe gastrointestinal reactions including vomiting and diarrhea but that's just the beginning hours later users begin to suffer from heart and nerve problems a lethal overdose can then follow however before you cut any wintry spice food or drink out of your life listen up you'd have to consume more than two tablespoons of nutmeg in order to feel the aforementioned effects and that's way more than you ever eat or drink in one serving baby carrot have you ever wondered about the growing or cooking process behind baby carrots and more importantly how are they created in order to stay so little well unlike with other miniature food there's no genetic tampering at play in actual fact baby carrots are nothing more than normal-sized carrots that have been cut and shaped in order to look like miniature versions of themselves the carrots are first harvested and picked like any other carrots before being sorted by a machine then they're chopped in half so they're around 2 inches long finally they're peeled and all baby carrot factories are someone hired to make sure all of the carrots are the right size before they get thrown into bags and served up at supermarkets and restaurants presumably these people are sworn to secrecy because it took much too long for this pack to be known peanut butter Jesus may have turned water into wine but scientists are achieving something way better they're turning peanut butter into diamonds so if you accidentally buy to much mr. Skippy and don't know how you're going to get through it consider making some jewelry diamonds are typically created more than 500 miles below Earth's surface when temperatures are over 4000 degrees Fahrenheit or 2200 degrees Celsius and the pressure is 1.3 million times greater than the atmosphere the crystallized carbon that is produced during this reaction is the clear stone we all know today but there's also a very complicated way to create them in your own kitchen peanut butter contains high levels of carbon the one key ingredient for creating diamonds and now Dan frost of Germany's by riches geo Institute has been using the carbon tucked inside peanut butter to create the impressive stone admittedly it's not a get-rich-quick scheme his method takes weeks to produce a diamond that's only three millimeters in diameter there's also a chance of each peanut diamond exploding during the process because of how hydrogen bonds to the carbon atom spicy food some people love spicy food and some people hate it a lot of this has to do with the pain that spicy foods invoke however this pain is all in your head because that burning sensation is a mental reaction not a physical one while it certainly feels like physical one when the roof of your mouth is on fire science has proven this conception wrong chili peppers contain a chemical known as capsaicin which naturally binds to the pain receptors on our nerves your brain thinks you're ingesting something very hot so you begin sweating and your face turns red this is your body's way of trying to cool you down even though there's no real temperature threat only a perceived one after swallowing the capsaicin binds two more receptors on its way down your throat and into your stomach in severe cases you may develop blisters in the throat vomit and even go into anaphylactic shock our bodies might be intelligent but they struggle sometimes when facing a perceived threat with all this considered you might be wondering why so many people enjoy spicy food well in response to the pain your brain releases endorphins and dopamine combined these chemicals create a euphoria similar to that which affects a long-distance runner over time you'll build up a tolerance so if you can't hack spicy foods for the Thai being don't sweat it because you might like them in the future chicken wings believe it or not chicken wings used to be regarded as gross parts of the animal this was before someone very kindly invented the buffalo wings before buffalo wings were invented by a New York anchor bar owner wings were usually thrown away with the rest of a chickens gristle and bones if a chef was determined not to waste so much of the bird these leftover parts would be used to make chicken stock for soups as the story goes a woman named Teresa bellissimo was looking to whip up a midnight snack for her college-age son since she had recently received an accidental wholesale order of chicken wings she decided to deep-fry them and then slather them in butter and hot sauce serving what would later become one of our favorite snacks before then wings had been considered pretty worthless but that all changed when the first plate of buffalo wings was served in 1964 at this family-owned restaurant what a sad world it must have been before then and that's all for eight interesting food facts you've always wanted to know can you think of any more strange food based knowledge let us know in the comments below thank you for watching and we'll see you next time
