a headless skinless mangled corpse of a creature long-haul truckers what's the creepiest or most paranormal thing you've ever experienced on the road I was driving cross-country once coming into Louisiana it started getting spooky lots of cars on the side of the road near a swamp kind of felt the swamp calling to me wanted to pull over for some reason going about 60 I cross over a short bridge and there's a Golden Retriever puppy in a dog bed looking clean and not scared right on the side of the bridge freaked me the hell out and I'm a dog lover but I'm not stopping there for a damn thing I was driving though Kansas on i-70 at night once when I hit one of the craziest thunderstorms and I've ever seen it was so bad the road started flooding a bit and I had to pull into a service plaza and wait it out when the creepy part happened as I was sitting in the truck watching the storm there is a series of lightning strikes followed by a blackout suddenly a massively bright light starts moving behind the clouds too slowly to be an aircraft but too fast to be part of the storm system it moves up over the hills and trees before crossing directly overhead then disappears a bit behind the service plaza the transit from tree line to Plaza took maybe five to ten minutes tops and while it was over headed cast everything in an eerie blue glow and lit up the parking lot I seriously thought aliens were invading anyway I kid you not within ten minutes of the creepy light disappearing the rain completely stopped and the parking lot lights came back on like someone flipped a switch I got the hell out of there while looking in my mirrors for spaceships or those alien walkers from War of the Worlds if anyone has any thoughts on what the hell that might have been I Myers the memory still bugs me as I'm not prone to conspiracy theories or crazy outlandish beliefs or anything I've considered stuff like ball lightning refracted sunlight it wasn't long after sunset or even military aircraft it was somewhat near an airbase but none of those seemed quite right for how massive the light behind the clouds was how localized to a specific part of the sky it was and the speed at which it moved I was crossing the Navajo Nation on my way to Colorado in the 90s it was around 1:00 a.m. and I was really tired so I pulled over between Gallup and Shiprock had a nightmare of evil looking faces coming at me out of pitch-black screaming I woke up started my car and when I turned on my headlights there was a coyote and a jackrabbit sitting about ten feet apart just on the edge of the light never had a nightmare like that before or since have traveled that route a few times but never stopped after dark again I heard this story from a trucker set in the 80s or 90s he pulled off an arrest stop in a southern state at like 3 a.m. he said truckers stick together like a family especially if one needs help with their gear or truck they help each other out whenever they can anyways he said he's getting ready to sleep and some guy starts knocking on his truck door so he rolls the window down in the sky says he's a trucker that is having some engine problems and was able to park his truck way down at the other end of the lot this guy at his door that asks if he can come help have a look at his truck the trucker said he thought it was odd because truckers usually just called their 24/7 roadside mechanic service that will try to fix your truck wherever you are and if they can't a new semi will pick up your load and your truck will be towed to the nearest diesel repair shop he said that was the first red flag he told the guy at his door sure I have to get some things and I'll meet you over there so just start walking back basically to get the guy to get lost the guy at his door says okay thanks some disappears down the lot the trucker on the show said he then realized he was the only truck in the entire laden that this guy wasn't a trucker so he turned on his rig and hauled out of there he then notified other truckers in the area to avoid that stop and gave a description of the guy I don't think the guy was ever caught but his intentions were obviously bad and apparently this was a common thing at the time basically psychos making stuff up at truckstops to take advantage of unknowing truckers just trying to have the rest outside of that I think it's pretty basic knowledge that rest stops are shady as hell to begin with though the creepiest thing I remember other than the empty rest areas in the middle of nowhere was the howling trailers of Flagstaff I get to my pickup point at midnight and the guard tells me to open my trailer doors and leave them open after I dropped my empty he gives me directions to the drop area and I get there just to hear the most chilling howl it sounds like a giant blowing over a hundred giant bottles the cold wind blows right through me as the howling gets louder I find an open spot and back in my trailer I start cranking down my landing gear and it's louder than ever I'm feeling the vibration through my body I get the landing gear down I pull my fifth wheel release and I'm gone to pick up my loaded trailer I check out the paperwork from the guard trailer thirteen thousand six hundred sixty-six lucky me I get to the area where they keep the loaded trailers and I find Satan's lucky load the wind picks up again in the Hal is almost deafening I feel the vibration even stronger as the goosebump rose on my body i hook up the Air Lines and electrical do a pre-trip inspection on the trailer and go to the back to close the door I get to the back doors and the wind picks up again the howling is coming from the wind blowing across all the open doors of all the trailers still creepy as hell I slam the doors shut and seal it at the guard shack I tell the guard and he tells me that they've had dozens of people quit over the howling drillers he told me they get to creeped out by it because it's in the middle of the woods I was driving through the backroads of Arkansas around 3 a.m. suddenly I hit a dense fog bank it was so thick that I knew I should have pulled off the road because I could barely see in front of me but sometimes pulling over can be just as dangerous so I slowed to about 20 miles per hour and put my hazards on I see no other cars coming from the other way or behind me after about 15 minutes I start seeing humanoid shadows illuminated by my headlights starting around the sides of the road and across it it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up I saw maybe five or six of them never got a good look all I saw was shadows darting back and forth but they were definitely human shaped needless to say I was freaked out and wanted to get away I speed up a bit after about five minutes I came out of the fog bank it ended just as suddenly as it came I speed away at my allotted 65 miles per hour and didn't stop till the Sun came up this is my dad's story just to explain he's ex-british army not scared of anything and super practical he became a lorry driver about 1975 I think this was not long after he started so this happened about 5:00 a.m. on a summer's day it was a bit misty like you get some mornings early but bright and he was heading out of London on the a3 he's driving his lorry and up ahead was a young woman early 20s in a long blue dress standing by the side of the road it must have been before the a3 was dueled and all the barriers were put up so dad sees her thinks she's waiting for a ride to work just as he's about to go past her she jumps in front of his lorry he immediately slams on the brakes as he's sure he's hit her but he didn't feel a bang but where else could she be couple of cars stop to see what's going on dad shakily explains in the drivers condley offer to stay while he looks for her under the lorry dad looks and she's not there other drivers look and there's nothing no body no blood no sign of anyone they all freak out a bit and then decide leaving ASAP is a great idea he can't explain it he knows she was there and he hit her he spent the rest of his driving career avoiding that route there are some pretty scary places in this country Gary Indiana East st. Louis Camden New Jersey looks absolutely terrifying in the daytime but driving in the navajo nation late at night always makes me a little uneasy wheeled into Shiprock New Mexico late on a Saturday night or early Sunday morning stray dogs just prowling around the desolate city streets punctuated occasionally by car's blowing through red lights at top speed different night late on u.s. 160 between que onda and Tuba City Arizona very lonely very dark road speed limit is 65 starts slowly coming up on a car a few mile per hour below that once I get close that car suddenly drops down to 35 and sits at that speed with the hazard lights on and me stuck behind it I'm wondering what's going on if another car is going to appear out of nowhere and try to run me off the road robbed me or worse no cars coming the other direction no cell service single lane can't risk a pass because the road is so dark and windy finally found a straightaway got around that par and got the hell out of there probably wouldn't have thought much of it on some country road in Ohio but out in the desert your mind goes to strange places the Navajo Nation can sometimes feel like a pretty lawless place oh and the time around 11:00 p.m. when a person deliberately ran out in front of my truck at freeway speed on i-10 outside of Palm Springs barely made it around him I've seen plenty of dangerous situations but that's the only one that actually spurred me to call 9-1-1 dispatcher says yes pedestrian on the freeway we already have officers on route but that's just California for you way back in the day I was on a trip to Marquette Michigan in a one-ton truck hauling a 20-foot enclosed trailer it was about 2:00 or 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon my route had a few pickups from the lower half of the state that needed to go north I was heading towards grayling when I noticed the light outside was for any lack of a better word odd it gave me one of those gut feelings that tells you something is wrong I pulled off at the next service station to investigate further found that the sky that had been overcast all day had an almost perfectly round giant tunnel in it check out fall streak holes or punch clouds for an idea of what I saw that giant hole looked like it went up for 15,000 feet to clear blue skies the odd light was from the green or orange light and dark storm clouds that made the outer ring of the hole looked like other weather was coming in but the forecast had called for only regular rain earlier I don't ignore gut feelings so I quickly checked into a dive motel and parked my truck against the building to shield it from the current wind direction about a 15 minutes later a tornado another crazy weather blew through just a bit north later found out from CB traffic that several trucks were blown off the road I did some figuring and would have likely been in its path when the weather went through as I made my way north the next day and it was weird seeing the downed trees from where it blew through not scary in a paranormal way but it was just past midnight and my fiance just parked at a truck stop after dropping off load he was getting ready to hit the shower when he heard someone knocking on his door it was a little girl about seven years old and she looked nervous and scared she asked my fiance if he has a few dollars to spare and of course my fiance asked where her parents were she pointed around the corner and come to find out she had been going truck to truck asking drivers for change so her mom could buy some crack it was scary because anyone could have taken off with her because she was on the other side of the building all by herself my fiance didn't give her money but bought food and drinks for her instead I hope that little girl is okay not a trucker but have driven across the country and all over my home region often late at night once I was driving down a back road on my way home it was about 1:00 a.m. and rain this was before GPS so I was only about fifty percent sure I was on the right Road if you're familiar with Northeast Georgia and Southwest North Carolina you'll know that identifying road signs are typically absent stolen or vandalized I was following the car in front of me because I figured no one would be speeding in the rain at 1:00 a.m. on a mountain road with help miles away and cellphones not yet a common thing my plan was to follow the road to the nearest town and find a gas station instead of cop pulls out of the void and flashes their lights was i speeding I pull over maybe I could ask for directions maybe this is good being a polite southern lady I roll down my window to meet this earliest cop you've ever seen in your life I apologize about speeding explained I'm lost use sir lot etcetera first words out of mr. cop's mouth do you know you just nearly hit an elk I look this man who is already soaked through with rain straight in the eye and before I can't control my damn full mouth I reply there are no elk in North Carolina well you nearly damn hit one as it turns out there are in fact Elkin that part of the country and I almost died hitting one on a country road in the middle of the night I never saw a glimpse of it ex long-haul trucker here I wasn't on the road for very long collectively I don't have any ghost route 66 stories or anything like that but I do recall one night in particular basically I was driving through Montana headed east and my company had miscalculated my mileage so I requested an emergency fuel up I got a response with the nearest gas station that I could get approved at it wasn't exactly close so I turned off the main highway and head toward my stop it's pitch-black Dairy snow moon no city light and I haven't seen any headlights for about an hour I'm cruising down the highway and I see something in the middle of the road at the furthest extent of my headlights so I slowed down naturally as I approached it when I come to pass it I get one good glance at it and slam on my brakes as I pass right in the middle of the highway all I could think was what the hell did I just see so I back up looking in my mirror until I see it's red silhouette in my brake lights I pull my brakes put on my jacket and grab my flashlight and hop out I walked to the back of my trailer and put my light on it and there it was a headless skinless mangled corpse i frozen my jaw dropped I didn't know what I was looking at I just stood there in the middle of the highway in the cold stagnant air the only sound is the hum of my truck 50 feet back watching the steam rise from this pile of meat there was no fur there was no clothing just a fully intact rib cage with a mess of other miscellaneous bones attached by lag limits I debated calling the police as the ribcage looked big enough for someone my size but I looked at my phone and had zero cell service the nearest town was about 50 miles out when I put my phone away I flashed my light around and standing at the end of the road where a handful of coyotes staring at me then they started coming through the fence and trotting my direction I figured this is the part where I get back in the truck before I get into a situation so I did and continued on my way I still to this day do not know if it was human or not whatever it was and whatever had happened I was almost a witness of I convinced myself that it was more than likely a deer and was hit by another truck like my own at highway speeds that would definitely do significant damage but in retrospect I've never seen roadkill missing its flesh before so yeah paranormal not at all creepy yeah not a truck driver but I was with my wife and she was driving we were driving on a highway through a poor urban area the highway was separated from the neighborhoods by a concrete divider and then a chain-link fence it was around midnight and there was just light traffic from the side of the road a guy walks onto the highway the Mercedes in front of us slams on the brakes and we do to my wife he yells oh my god what is this guy doing he just tried to end himself I see on the side of the road another couple guys crouched behind the concrete barrier I shouted go around quick they're trying to rob him or steal his car if he steps in front of our car don't stop and she did go around at probably much to a leisurely pace but we avoided it the Mercedes got away too because I saw him swerve around after we passed it was still pretty tense wish I was the one driving though it's never ideal when you need to tell your wife to run a dude over if you need to my old bishop used to be a trucker when he was younger he told us one day while driving to Utah from Cali he saw a man in a very bright yellow rain jacket he said the look on his face looked like he was about to die but he got a very eerie feeling to not pull over this was around 2:00 p.m. he tells us by the way around 9:00 p.m. he gets to a place to eat some dinner as he sits down he notices two tables from his left the very same man there's no possible way that man could have gotten him he strictly remembers no car passing him at all not one and when he saw the man it was in the middle of nowhere so not like he was in a town with his car this was before the Internet so he never put it out there like back in the 80s I want to say I was a touring musician for about ten years so I spent a lot of time on the road typically we were driving through the middle of the night but occasionally had travel days where we made our way throughout the day typically showed a show being more than ten hours apart I have seen many accidents of varying degrees of injury but one still sticks out to me more than others we had just finished playing a show in Austin Texas and we were making our way to LA to start a tour the next day since we were in the same city for a week we were all pretty well-rested which meant everyone was awake and full of energy we were having a fun conversation when we crested the top of a hill from which we could see traffic was completely clear on the other side of the highway but about half a mile down it looked like four lanes completely backed up and no one was moving we were joking about what might be holding up traffic when we approached the accident there was a GMC Envoy the very same car I owned at the time that appeared to have rolled maybe five or six times that had landed perfectly balanced on the cement median between the highways all of the windows were gone including the windshield about twenty feet from the car I saw the body of a woman in another smaller body both of them very obviously dead everyone was completely silent for the next hour or so until we pulled over and decided to take a break not because we physically needed one but I think everyone needed to quit thinking about it my dad's a trucker I remember when I was about 12 he came home early covered in blood and did not talk to anyone he looked horrible later that day my stepmom told me this it was early that morning and foggy when he heard someone screaming on the CB about an accident up ahead going the opposite direction when he came upon the scene he saw this a woman and her kids in a station wagon that had broken down the first trucker saw it and stopped to help he was standing between a semi and the station wagon when trucker two came along and could not see he had drifted off the road he slammed into truck number one pinning the truck driver number one between his own semi on the station wagon my dad came along within seconds he ran across the highway and saw the carnage in front of him the woman and the kids screaming in the truck driver number one alive but pretty much cut in half and truck driver number two almost having a heart attack and in severe shock dad held truck driver number ones hand until he passed creepiest is seeing people walking along the shoulder of the highway when it's pitch-black out and there hasn't been a town for miles and miles and there isn't one coming up for miles either I drove across Australia last year Australia is about the same size as the US - Alaska but with less than 10% of the population this means that the country is just a handful of cities and towns separated by vast empty expanses of nothingness yet every day of our drive when we were a good hour or two driving from the next truck stop there was always some guy on the side of the road walking along with a backpack that I hope had a lot of food water and a satellite phone in it thanks
