[Music] hey everybody welcome back to my channel i'm hey shady lady and today we're going to be doing something a little bit different i'm trying out a new video series where i analyze popular content creators specifically streamers and trace through their history online and see how they built their career in the streaming industry sort of like i did in my first video how to talk to yourself when no one is there where i was featuring larger streamers and kind of going over their entertainment style i would love to keep this respectful especially the comment section below so please keep that in mind when leaving any replies i will be heavily moderating the comments so you better keep it nice or else i will probably be flipping back and forth between two different recordings of me because it took me two recording tries to get all of the information that i wanted today i thought i would start with valkyrie who is someone i'm not super duper familiar with but i know that she is i've seen her i see her name pop up all the time recently and i know she's been in a couple music videos lately that have caught my attention and i have been curious to dig in and see how she got her career started and how she grew to the level that she has over the last six years or so because i believe she started in 2015. so i thought we could just start not quite a deep dive i'm going to skim the surface but i want to get a feel for how she got started streaming what her analytics have looked like over time what categories she plays in her entertainment style we're going to kind of look through her social media her analytics and see what we can find today's video is kindly sponsored by placeit.net playset.net is a really awesome resource for content creators of all kinds but we're sponsoring today's video and let's jump back into to begin with i did a nice old-fashioned google search for her valkyray she is 29 years old 3.54 million subscribers on youtube 3.6 million subscribers on instagram 2.6 million on twitter on twitch she has 1.1 million but i don't think that her twitch is going to be a good sample pull because she has not streamed on twitch since i believe january of 2020 she's signed a contract with youtube and now it streams exclusively on youtube so we're gonna be looking at a lot of her content here on youtube let's start with her wikipedia you know you've made it when you have a wikipedia article it says in 2014 while working at a gamestop she began sharing her gaming hobby on instagram gaining a significant following she was encouraged by various instagram followers friends and twitch streamers to start streaming on twitch beginning in 2015 and then she began posting gaming videos to youtube she also it looks like in 2018 she joined a competitive esports team and became a content creator for 100 thieves she became co-owner of 100 thieves so she's a business lady she's won a couple of gaming awards she's been in a couple music videos bella porch is the one i was thinking of she was just recently in that machine gun kelly one so we've learned through her wikipedia that she's gotten started through instagram so let's take a look over here at her instagram i would imagine after growing her platform to a significant size that she's probably gone through and cleaned up or deleted older posts know that that's something that content creators will frequently do the larger they grow so i am going to scroll as far back as i can to see what the start of her instagram looked like okay we're at the very beginning of what is available on valkyrie's instagram we can see a lot of video game related posts her taking pictures with her and her game so it looks like she was tagging her instagram posts original xbox gauntlet dark legacy arcade at home so she was definitely utilizing instagram hashtags she's not hashtagging selfies she's hashtagging some of the more interest and it definitely looks like she plays world of warcraft diablo battlefield 4 i've never played any of these games so i think first person shooter so she's a competitive gamer clearly she's at the top her kill death ratio is good she's at the top of the kill list so she's clearly good at the games that she plays here's a zelda one okay cool she's tagging this majora's mask nintendo nintendo 64. and what i think is interesting about her feed is that these earlier posts they look like just a normal person's instagram right not to say that she's not a normal person anymore but she's definitely a celebrity at this point but they're not formatted they're unfiltered they're just like raw pictures here's one with her little gamestop badge on so she's just kind of sharing basically like slice of life moments but specifically focused on the video games that she likes and she's tagging the video games the gaming consoles and she's kind of like blogging her interest in video games what's her posting frequency september 3rd september 2nd august 30th sometimes twice a day three that's three times in that day she's posting between one and three times a day sometimes she'll skip a day or two so she's using instagram daily as a blogging platform and targeting specific hashtags for the gaming consoles and stuff that she likes i think that she would also stand out in the type of games that she's sharing because these are all typically boy games right first person shooters and stuff like that so she's definitely going to stand out because she's a very cute girl and i don't think that we can ignore that fact but i think that she would also be someone that girls who are interested in these games would look up to because she's very fashionable she's very cool looking so she's kind of a role model in that way she's also clearly doesn't take herself too seriously she posts silly little meme pictures of herself so she's got a good sense of humor on september 26 2014 valkyrie posted on her instagram i thought it was funny how this post is my 100th post can't believe 10 000 of you decided to follow my page and then she goes on to tell a little bit of her story about how she got into gaming so this was september of 2014 which was five months before she actually started streaming on twitch she already had 10 000 followers on instagram built around her passion for gaming and also her personality and her life in general then on november of 2014 she posted my face when i saw 15k from september 14th to november 24th she gained 5 000 more followers on her instagram page that's 2500 followers a month on instagram back in 2014. it's interesting to me that she's receiving packages from fans december 24th 2014 which is only a couple of months after her instagram feed has started so she's already built up a fan base just through instagram then on january 13th of 2015 two months after she had hit 15k she posts after many weeks of internal debate with myself i decided i'm going to start up a twitch account for you guys i've received so many messages asking me to do so and so it shall be so in january of 2015 she decides that she's going to start streaming and the final update i want to include is at the end of january january 31st 2015 she posts that she's hit 20k on instagram so between september of 2014 and january of 2015 she doubles her instagram following she gains 10 000 followers on instagram before she has even hit go live one time when she starts streaming and i believe her first stream was in mid-february she already has an audience of 20 000 followers on instagram that has been recently grown and is recently engaged with her content she's starting out not with xero on twitch she's starting out with a steady fan base that's expecting her content and has been demanding live stream content from her she did a lot of her original work here on instagram she built a very intricate connection with her fan base here i would imagine that she was probably frequently replying to people's comments replying to messages and things like that she seems like she was very involved with her community in that way i'm going to be streaming all day today come hang out if you're feeling lonely or bored we can have a party this is february 14th this is valentine's day of 2015 she started streaming let's take a look at her analytics february 2015. i don't have stats back that far this is gonna be the earliest data that i have available on what kind of numbers that she was averaging because of she ends up changing her username she did initially start streaming under the username valkyray with an underscore because valkyray without the underscore was already taken by an inactive account i can only speculate and assume here unless i really wanted to dig through all her social media and figure out when she announced her new username change but i can assume that when i start to get data for her on august of 2015 she changed her username to valkyray without the underscore which would be six months after she initially started streaming in february in order for her to get a username that was taken by another account she would have had to hit partner as well so i'm assuming after six months of streaming she's already partnered which would mean that she was probably averaging between 100 and 200 viewers consistently throughout that six month period and by the time we start to see data for her in august of 2015 she is between 180 and 300 average viewers on her content so valkyrie's start on twitch came from building an audience on instagram a significant audience 20 000 followers that were actively engaged with her as a person and her passion and love for video games we can see here this is only going from february 2016 to august of 2021 she started streaming one year before this but she's at 36 000 followers and early 2016 and she stays pretty consistent with how fast she's growing but there's a huge spike right here in february of 2018 to march of 2018 she goes from 90 000 followers to 153 000 that's 60 000 followers in one month in 2017 she's averaged 298 viewers in 2018 she averages 1800 she's gone up 1500 average viewers from the year 2017 to 2018. i wonder what happened in 2018. this is august 2015. yeah look at this that's hella variety five nights at freddy's bioshock finding of isaac spooky's jump scare mansion i see whiplash in here which means that she is being hands-on with community engagement she's making content directly with her community quiplash is a game that your community plays with you so she's involving her community super duper variety this is intense variety she's basically playing a different game every single day this is actually pretty interesting data right here when she goes from variety the month before she's at 285 average viewers she's got a she must have networked and made a friend at some somewhere or multiple friends that she is receiving a raid from once a month or so she's getting a once a month raid or a front page spot or something that is spiking her data yeah it spikes up here at the very end after she gets this 1700 viewer mark on this it looks like she picked up a significant audience from this that state stood with her because for the rest of the month her view her average viewer account has gone up almost 200 average viewers so she's sitting at 344 here in april of 2016 and then in june of 2016 two months later she stops doing variety she goes only to overwatch and her view count has dropped down over 100 average viewers let's take a look at july she streamed three hours that month so it looks like she hit a wall in summer of 2016. i don't know if this would be burnout or if she switched to a different platform or something she's doing really good with variety she's averaging 344 she's getting nice raids from someone that's getting her boosted up being discovered in the categories but also getting new audiences brought to her that she's building a little bit of momentum out of and something happens maybe because of this sudden burst of her numbers and she's not mentally ready to handle a larger audience she doesn't know how to handle that many people talking to her commenting on her fighting for her attention in other words and maybe around june because overwatch to me is typically an angry game 100 of her energy is going into overwatch her viewer count is going down and then she just stops streaming for about two months and then when she comes back her view count is significantly lower 170 that's almost cut in half of what it was before her break it looks like she's tried to niche down a couple of times into world of warcraft into overwatch and i believe she might hit a wall it looks like she keeps hitting walls this is really similar to what happens to me too it looks like she's hitting walls like she's streaming a lot of hours she'll hit a wall with something and she'll back off for a month or two or three and then she'll come back in swinging so this is 107 hours streamed compared to the month before where it was only 26 hours streamed this is very interesting it looks like she is almost like beating her head against the wall trying to figure out what what is going to work she keeps trying then when she goes back to variety her viewer count is going down it's not going up she gets frustrated backs off a little bit so in november of 2017 we're right here at 81 000 followers and we're gonna look through december january february and march and april and see what happens in this little five month where we get a spike november of 2017 she is doing variety streaming getting over it dark souls hearthstone evil within pub g league of legends overwatch all over the board trying a bunch of different games averaging 294 viewers december of 2017 she's playing dark souls irl streaming dark souls 2 hearthstone and then right here december 9th we see fortnite and then look at all of this fortnight that starts to trickle in she starts playing a ton of fortnite and that becomes her main game she's pretty much switching exclusively to fortnight by the end of december of 2017 and then january of 2018 she came in swinging this month 161 hours streamed 400 average viewers so she's making a big push here mostly for tonight's majority oh yeah that's a ton of fortnight okay so she's gonna find her groove here in fortnight it looks like 410 average viewers because remember from her instagram she's a skilled marksman she has high kill death ratio so she's good at shooter games so she found the game that is getting her traction she's pushed her average viewership up from around 250 to around 400 by switching exclusively to fortnite she's still doing a little bit of irl streaming there's a little bit super mario and then in february of 2018 she's up to 1 000 average viewers which is where we're seeing this huge spike come in remember february to march we see her gain 60 000 followers all fortnight in february she's only playing fortnight now march of 2018 which is where the huge spike comes in look at all of these huge raids 3 000 average viewers and she pretty much sticks with fortnite for the rest of the time that she's on twitch so it's a fortnight streamer the moral of the story is not stream fortnite at all this is where she rode up into higher viewership i think that there was probably something else going on in her career though we know that march of 2018 is the big month for her where she goes from 250 average viewers to about a thousand average viewers in a couple of months because she found the right niche for her specifically i want us i want to stress that fortnite is not the solution but it was for valkyray and this is because she had a previous well established interest in adrenaline type games specifically focused on shooting her battlefield remembering her instagram early on when she didn't have much of a following she's showing her high kill death ratio and being the top of the charts in these so she's very good at shooting games she's got a quirky fun personality with a good sense of humor she has a very sweet smile so i'm sure it's fun to watch her play games and be good at games and also i would say something that works for her too i haven't seen her in action yet but i think that's something that would work for her too is she's this adorable cute little girl but she's a badass killer right she she's posing with knives and stuff not gratuitously so there's just that little flair of it so she's almost this like adorable little assassin vibes got her little knives kind of like archetype i would imagine in a action movie where she's just this adorable little person turn your back and she pulls the knife out and assassinates you it's a very interesting persona and she has the skill base to back that up so sh when she gets into a game like fortnite which is a free game everybody can play it it's got an evolving plot line that's going on all the time it's bright it's colorful still the first year of her streaming and where sis still looks like an average content creator she's using a blue yeti i'm sure that a lot of y'all have blue yetis an average small streamer's account right here the pictures are using instagram filters they're not high production they're grainy cell phone pictures without professional lighting right here she looks like she's going for an instagram aesthetic still not taking herself too seriously i think this is probably one of the main reasons that she is successful is because she's relatable right she's silly she's quirky she's fun she's goofy she doesn't take herself too seriously here's where she picks up overwatch for the first time it looks like so this is may of 20 yep summer of 2016. yeah look so these pictures are totally different now so she must have built this is when she's averaging around 200 average viewers i would imagine she's starting to make a decent income off of twitch taking like these cute fashion pictures outside bringing her fashion interest to the next level which again is definitely something that she should focus on because it is very unique to her especially in the gaming industry it stands her out in gaming fashion is a huge part of what makes valkyrie valkyrie and now these are professional pictures this is a photographer that's taken these pictures this was at the end of the photo shoot yes 2017 she starts working with a photographer and her instagram changes the pictures are more crisp but they're more classy she gets a car here that's a huge step in your career 2017 she's still got her fitness stuff coming in we've still got pokemon cute plushies here's a little bit of the fortnight so here we go okay this is what i wanted to see april 2018 and her spike was february of 2018. so we've gone a little bit too far right in this area is when she gets her spike proceeds to search for the fortnight loot drop moving to l.a right around the time that she's gone up to around a thousand viewers so it turns out that when she moved to la she did end up moving into what is called a content creator house or a streamer house the 1000 thieves house which which goes by a different name now as far as i understand i didn't super deep dive into her stay there but i think it's an important part of her growth as well because a content creator house is essentially a house where a bunch of streamers or content creators live together and will collaborate and make content together and as far as i understand she stayed there for a short amount of time before she eventually moved out saying that she wanted to separate her work from her home life which i think is a very smart move personally when we see this spike in her metrics and her viewer count it aligns with her moving to la and moving into this streamer house and collaborating with a lot of different people she was being more highly produced she was getting raids and hosts from other content creators that she was staying with and i think that lines up a lot with why we see such a giant burst in her viewership around that time and all of these pictures now these are all i'm sure you can tell these are professional photographer here's her with ninja and whatever that guy's name is marshmallow i forget his name sorry standing in front of a fortnite stadium the honor to be one of 50 gamers teaming up with 50 celebrities for a fortnight tournament here she is it looks like with pokemane right these are the offline tv people i suppose i don't know all of them i'm sorry forgive me at this point networking has come into what she's doing this is networking now we're seeing physical manifestation of networking she's moved to la she's starting to hang out with other top streamers and probably doing collaborative games with them for several apparel collection valkyrie has now become a brand this is really fun to like dig through and watch her evolve from a cute quirky gamer girl working at gamestop to a full-fledged influencer in her niche getting her own marketing brands her hair is beautiful dude oh my god there's no doubt that she has a social media manager possibly multiple ones that are probably scheduling and approving and planning her instagram releases good morning but at the same time like this is this probably wasn't her when she woke up this is a professional photo shoot everything's feeling planned and polished in her feeds now but again she's she's a couple million she's in music videos she's a full-fledged celebrity i want to see her in action now we've learned her analytics a lot we know a lot about her analytics that she was playing all kinds of different games trying a whole bunch of different games on wearing a bunch of different hats averaging pretty i mean honestly 250 average viewers on twitch is nothing to scoff at at all so the oldest video content i could find is on her youtube channel so this is february of 2018. so at 2018 if i'm not mistaken from what i've just looked through on her social media she's already moved to l.a they're like pink and blue wait you gotta like fix them so they're not crazy xd oh no ma'am [Music] 12 kills [Music] [Laughter] oh my gosh dude this is the third time today the first thing i'm noticing is that she is intent on her video games i'd like to see her playing something besides fortnite [Music] oh my god please don't leave me again she's incredibly emotive and expressive she's got lots of facial activity going on watch her face here i have no idea what's going on with her in the game but i can feel her relief look at her eyebrows specifically oh my god please don't leave me again see her mouth moving her whole face is engaged in the emotion that she's expressing she's very i don't mean to use the word dramatic in a bad sense dramatic in a theatrical sense she's theatrical she is expressive she's a motive she is conveying all of her emotions which is making it very i had no idea what was going on with her in the game but i was like oh thank god like i had the same feeling that she was trying to convey another thing i noticed you can see her moving with the game right you can see her like physically she is completely into the game she's playing and she's clearly pretty good at it but what i want to say from this is that she is not narrating her every little individual thought so this may work for some people and it may not work for some people and i think that an important thing is to experiment and try different styles out so maybe you should hone in on a very intense game where you can show off your skill set or you could be more like the markiplier example i used in a previous video where he is just talking about everything that he's thinking at all times and filling every little tiny bit of space with noise if possible he relies more on his sense of humor and joking and improv in the moment rather than just being like an op wow double headshot 360 no scope whatever words y'all use for holy crap dude that's crazy you're a beast i'm a beast she's so expressive and vibrant and loud with what she's thinking and feeling when she has space to do it so she focuses on the game she's focused on skill in other words yeah how about little nightmares let's take a look at little nightmares which is uh more of a narrative based game oh no these remind me of clickers this guy's just vibing you guys enjoying this game so far i'm loving it i think it's so great i mean it's actually a lot scarier than the first one it's pretty cool it's actually gotten better i like that there's two of them okay i got it so she asked she asked a question to her audience but she did not stop to read the replies and i'm sure she has many people replying at this point but she's definitely engaging the audience a little bit there are you enjoying the game i like it because of this reason which would be seen to me as engagement stirring so she might not be sitting there replying and patting everyone in the back for answering the question but it's creating a conversation for people in chat to discuss while she's continuing to explore the game i see a handful of collabs going on here pokey featuring myth and chica valkyrie duo squads 1000 thieves squads she does a ton of collaborations working with other streamers and playing games with other content creators that's not always a requirement for larger content creators that's that's a fairly common trend especially when the among us started becoming a thing and everybody was just constantly playing among us all the time but you look at these views dude 3 million 2.6 million everybody loves watching everybody lie and gaslight their friends all the time what a what an interesting moment in our collective consciousness and then now after the among us fad died out we see her come back to uno with corpse role play gta 5 br featuring my brother featuring jacksepticeye i was on jimmy fallon's show with strangers drunk drawing with offline tv and friends i've been bella porch's new music video does mostly collaborative content at this point maybe this is she has more fun making content this way maybe it's not as fun for her to be alone and that is kind of something i'm picking up from watching her play solo video games is that she is a little more reactive and she doesn't do i don't want to say i don't want to say this in any type of way but she's more responsive reactive or two things happening in the video games she'll allow dead space to go so i imagine that she probably does a better job with a another streamer with her or multiple other streamers that she can bounce off of with other people so the space is filled a little bit better i imagine that collaborative content is not only better performing for her but more fun for her to create as well the last thing i want to do before i wrap up my thoughts on her career is she has a video here called tips on becoming a twitch streamer and i just want to kind of skim through this hi valky congrats on 100 wins and i was wondering how to start up a twitch channel and get viewers because i only get about one per stream love you so here i'm gonna let you in on first of all if something is not working with your streams after months of doing it you need to change what you're doing she says if something is not working after months of doing it you need to change something and i think that through her analytics we can see very clearly that she follows her own advice she was beating her head against the wall with all these different variety games she wasn't seeing a lot of growth and then she found the niche game that worked for her because she was experimenting she was trying different things and then she sees growth from it she didn't allow herself to just sit and stagnate on something she noticed a lull she noticed a period of stagnation and she acted upon that by bringing in a change not another thing i gotta add from my experience if you are a variety streamer if you play many games and i was a variety streamer if you play many games your view count is not going to be as high as other people that are going to be playing a single game hence why since i've only been playing fortnite a lot of people have been hanging out and watching the people that like fortnite will watch if i change to another game because of variety like for example when i play the dark souls series and then i switch to like another game like a shooter or an mmo those people might still support me but they're not going to watch if that makes sense so you got to keep that in mind like if you're a variety streamer view count may not be as high but you'll still probably get like support if you are a bright streamer you can build a community that will watch you no matter what you play and it's i loved it i remember when i had like 200 300 400 viewers and it was like the same group of people and they were there no matter what i played and they were still very supportive and new people would subscribe maybe when i was playing the witcher they would subscribe because they went through the witcher section and they found me and they loved me as a person they subscribed three months and then i switched to fortnite and then they unsubscribe so it's life you know that's what happened interesting so she's just actually addressing what we've all just what we've just looked at through her statistics here is that variety streaming is not going to lead to a consistent turnout for all of the different games that you're trying and once you get into a main game you're going to be able to just coast and build in that category because you're consistent with what you're putting out and i think that this is going to come down to a judgment call for you are you feeling locked in or blocked in by only playing one game do you prefer the freedom of being able to flex and play literally whatever you want to i kind of go between one and the other but i do feel like if i could just finally settle into a niche i might be able to see more significant growth what can we learn from valkyray is i think that she is a wonderful wonderful example of what i'm always pushing which is building authority on another platform will give people more of a reason to care that you're live in the first place she built a huge audience on instagram and she was able to migrate that following and hit twitch partner within six months of streaming because she already had a huge following on another platform i don't know that everything that valkyrie does is going to be necessarily replicable or something that is going to be relatable or applicable for everybody that is trying to get into streaming because she follows a very specific trajectory she builds a huge following on instagram based around herself and her interest in gaming she transfers over to twitch and hits partner within six months because she already has a following built she juggles back and forth between variety gaming until she finds her stride in a niche which for her happened to be fortnite as soon as she starts to hit her stride in fortnight she follows opportunities available to her and moves to la moves into a content creator house starts doing all kinds of collaborative content with other content creators eventually moves into her own place again but then becomes a co-owner of 1000 thieves which was the content creator house she was living in and then she continues to network in the entertainment industry specifically focused on youtube and twitch and gaming and streaming in general and she starts to make appearances in music videos she does all kinds of collaborative content on her youtube and she eventually signs an exclusive contract with youtube to be a streamer on their platform instead of twitch she follows a very specific path i think some of the things that she does are very good lessons for streamers to look up to and emulate such as she never gives up she continues to experiment with her content throughout her entire career she leaves herself space even when she settles into the fortnight niche to be able to do other content outside of just that specific game so that she doesn't feel too boxed in by what she's doing and she in my opinion always stayed authentic and genuine to her passions and herself which i think is a huge part of why she is so successful so what i would draw and what i'm what i'm personally pulling from her is as much as it may pain you to push a niche only it will help your overall view count to step away from variety and just fall into that niche content that you enjoy and your viewers really enjoy from you i also think another really important thing to pull from valkyrie is that she used the internet as a social outlet i believe in one point in her post i saw that she said that this was her main form of socializing was through the internet she was basically creating a friendship with herself and her viewers so she was updating about her daily life she was posting about her just getting a new job sharing her new outfit you know sharing the things that were important to her in a day-to-day moment and she was updating consistently sometimes daily sometimes multiple times a day on a micro blog platform which would be instagram in this case but you could also use twitter or tick tock for this and i think achieve similar results and then she stood with a consistent schedule it seems like she might have hit some uh burnout walls at certain points and she allowed herself to take breaks but then she came back swinging every time she never gave up i think that there's a lot of good lessons to learn out of the path that valkyrie has taken to success and hopefully y'all were able to learn some stuff from this video today so thank you all so much for tuning in a big thank you to valkyrie even though she has no idea i made this video but just a thank you anyway for existing i suppose and being such a wonderful example of someone who was able to take a passion and turn it into a really phenomenal career and i hope that you all were able to learn something from this video and maybe be able to apply it to your own journeys on your path towards being content creators let me know what you guys think of this video if you all like it and you have suggestions or requests of other content creators you would like me to kind of analyze their trajectory through social media over the years and bring some maybe some insight onto how they did what they did what's what what worked for them what didn't work for them i'd love to hear your thoughts thank you to my fan house subscribers to help me be a full-time content creator i think that's going to wrap it up for today's video thank you all so much for watching and i will see you all in the next one bye [Music] you
