it's the tour de france live it's stage 12 and the stage is about to start [Music] [Music] 218 kilometers of racing today and 161 riders at the start well we didn't have time to tell you our coverage as always presented by rocket mortgage because you hit us as the race has started on this stage 12. i'm phil liggett i'm bob roll although a little way away from me is sat there in connecticut bob a very quick start we anticipated this the longest day of the race longest stage of this year's tour de france and riders anticipating that the breakaway might have a chance and they are on the attack at the front champion of south africa that's ryan gibbons right in the front of your screen there the world champion mance pedersen is is in this breakaway as well but they've not been given very much lead so far well that's first of all bob take us through the geico stage map it's a long day for them 135 and one half miles coursing south and east chauvini to saran and they have started very very quickly today sprint point after 31 miles then there's a series of short but very tough climbs on narrow roads especially the last category 2 climb there is also 8 seconds time bonus on the top of that that's what the b means and then sweeping down into saran for the finish after a long day in the saddle we've already had our first crash of the day and it could be a serious one because down there is the leader of the copper dish team at guillaume martin and more importantly he's third overall in the race this is the crash it happened about a minute and a half ago a lot of riders involved that that's uh gail martin there on the right of our picture and also on the rider ludsenko is down in the white jersey there and i saw john mccarthy of the ef team also delayed all up and riding again so there was no injuries that'll send panic buttons ringing in the coffee squad third place overall gale martin i don't think that he fell down he definitely clipped out and was delayed by that but i did not see him on the ground and he's back up he has one teammate with him the last time we saw but the whole team i'm most certain will be called back to pace him back into the front of the peloton and they are absolutely flying phil not a nice way to start the stage today for gail martin kasparoscreen in the red with the white helmet from the dakunik squad having a tough time if his body language and facial expressions are anything to go by getting across four men they're a minute and nine seconds ahead of these two chasers and the four riders in front working very well together virgo doe the young frenchman from total direct energy is the rider that's with kasparaz green and still a lot of aggressive riding in the peloton 104 miles to go still but it's all about the sprint because as you watch yesterday i hope with us you saw the d class of pedes again uh from second place to nothing at the back of the field now he's looking to pick up a few points here but he only qualifies for the seventh place result which is nine points and sure enough it's being led out again walk off looking where ever looking where his green jersey is which is benny bennett cracks sagan follows benny wins pretty easily and sagan doesn't even get the second place in that sprint bob he loses two points to sam bennett in the green jersey this is a very serious lead out by michael morkov in the white and blue of dakunik teammates with sam bennett who's in the green jersey and murkoff holding on all the way to the line so peter sagan only third in that i mean they are sprinting for seventh place so most of the points for the intermediate sprint up the road but still taking this very seriously you have to sprint in these situations or you'll lose way more than just a couple but sagan is not as quick so far in this tour as sam bennett that's an absolute fact yeah he's been beaten on all of the occasions they've raced for points so sam bennett is having a magical tour de france so far and it continues but we've lost a ride at the feeding station team ccc's zacharian has abandoned the tour de france 160 riders left and daniel os is now the pacemaker at the front the line pulled out to see they're still racing bob two or three minutes ahead of the fastest expected time so this is a very quick day today and i think that that will probably be even quicker by the time they get to the finish i think it's going to be a very very aggressive finale interesting to see the ccc squad has gotten in the line of bora men at the front of the peloton they're in the orange jerseys and they seem to be willing to contribute to a high tempo along with the borah team of peter sagan so i think they would love to set it up for greg von avermont and this type of race does most certainly favor his talents and ccc no stage wins so far and a couple of big cards to play so i think it's going to be a wild and woolly closing few miles for a lot at stake on today's stage the points jersey of course and of course the stage win now this is one reason for the pace i think bob to try and keep sam bennett on his back foot there number 43. he's also at the back number in the green jersey with caleb euan they're dangerously close to being dropped there has been a gap on the earlier slopes of the climb and so very tough tempo throughout and that's exactly what they want to do is put the not necessarily as good a climber amongst the sprinter as peter sagan in trouble and it's seeming to have the effect they desire absolutely i think in that one picture bob it's told us exactly why border hands grover are keeping the tempo they're hurting the green jersey and when we get to the steep climb of the suke omei yeah they'll probably get rid of bennett and then there's a chance of big points for peter sagan they're making a a reasonable stage a lot tougher than it necessarily would have been because of peter's relegation on yesterday's stage peter sagan's relegation and if that hadn't been the case uh peter sagan might not try to use today to crack the other sprinters the hammer has gone down bob the pressure is on alberto bella betiol has just had a flat tire at the most crucial stage of the race and the breakaway is breaking up it is absolutely flat out at the front of the peloton at the moment viviani dropped we saw sam bennett also being dropped and caleb so the sprinters having a tough finale and and bennett also the green jersey probably will not catch up before the finish so his chances of getting more points for the green jersey today out of the question well that's the that was plan a of the boiler hands grower team was by the time they got to these last hills they wanted to be rid of bennett a bonus they've also got rid of ewing they've got rid of greipel and now we've seen viviani the sprinters all going off the back of the race that is sauron krog on the wheel of benut they have caught and passed the ice green and erviti sun web they were at the front a few miles ago and now this is their tactic teach banu trying to spring soaring krog anderson for today's stage win sullen clark anderson t spanoot have started the move here as green trying to get on the back of bernout there as they pile the pressure on at the moment this might be the move that could decide the race we're 42 kilometers about 26 miles from the finish and we still got the climb of the souk ome which takes it up to 3 000 feet mark is the rider trying to bridge up to the two men from sun web sorry phil mark solaire in the blue jersey very strong climber oh peterson he's digging deep now he's holding on this is mark solaire now making a dig and this is a big move for his team as well because they were the yellow helmets as the team leaders and with a man up here may be winning alone bob that could push the team out with an even bigger advantage the peloton only 38 seconds behind the six men in front and only about 20 seconds behind this group excuse me these are the six leaders but behind the group in between only a few seconds behind them so small separation and it's going to all go absolutely bananas on the last climb they are hauling 5ks for the start of the climb this is bob jungles in the chase group trying to do his best he's got that gap down to just 17 seconds so it looks to me like the power of the tour de france stage at the moment is with this group right here very motivated and powerful group of riders chasing the six men in front and it's uh somewhere three riders on the front are stamping on it now as they try to take i would think nicholas roach towards the line teach benut is the man on the front soren krog and mark hirschi most likely rider to attack on this hill if he has the legs to do it and watch for the borah rider to try to counter that that's max shockman in the white and green jersey that's right roach isn't in the group and i thought we had him on the caption earlier anyway he's not here you're right marcus she is the man to look out for the youngster as their ride is now completely shattered down there into small groups now there's a counter move coming immediately from the front well this man is turning out to be one of the fines of the opening 12 days of the tour de france he's trained i was not trained but he's managed by his boyhood hero fabian cancellara and there's no nobody knows quite how good this young man is yet in his first tour de france so agonizingly close to a stage win in the pyrenees a couple days ago didn't quite get the win that was taken out by tede pogacha in front of the yellow jersey now primos roglic who got the jersey the yellow jersey that day but mark hershey a very talented cyclist missed out when he presumably on paper should have won that stage so he has a great chance to rectify that on today's stage now he's got a gap of 43 seconds over the peloton and very testing roads to the finish well that's how he did it just launch a good attack from behind the shadow solo solaire saw him but could not lift his pace and hershey has made what could be his final attempt in as many days to try and win a stage of the tour de france right fast descent now the five points there for hershey has put him now second in the competition five points behind konawa tomorrow we have plenty of points on offer that maybe of course is secondary but right now is premier mark is to win at the stage look at him coming down here 25 plus miles an hour and this is alaphilippe going again here he's determined to try and reach him he knows all about hershey of course having been in that front group with him on the road into nice on stage two now he knows exactly what this young man is capable of there's the attack look back on julian alaphilippe everybody else looking at each other ellison trying to get his here too yeah and that's uh julian alla philippe last year he was on such spectacular form that those attacks translated into stage wins and the yellow jersey maybe off his best form a little bit this year he's attacked hard twice let's see if anybody is willing to cooperate with him one advantage that he or she does have he has a teammate in the chase group that can sit on the wheels discourage any chasers trying to get across to that man the lone leader he's making full use of the road this rider is such a terrific descender he sees the line absolutely perfectly apart from when he locked his wheel up twice coming down the earlier climb but even so he was he was still a perfect line for the corner he just uh gripped his brakes a bit too hard i think still got the speed you can never catch a rider doing 25 miles an hour this close to the finish soaring crogg anderson the last teammate from some web of mark hershey the lone leader doing a good job bringing allah fleet back into the fold and now there'll be a hesitation and here she can pour on the coals for his lead everybody now looking at each other that's worth two seconds right there to the leader as they look at each other reichenbach the champion of switzerland looks over his shoulder shackman is behind him jesus in the other red jersey fallen to the back of the pack meanwhile there is a peloton and there it is two minutes and 18 seconds back for the peloton for over five hours in the south the longest day of the race one of the youngest riders in the race and he's bringing it home impressive riding by roll on he hasn't given up yet taking ella's owned and hugo hull with him in this circumstance i don't think it's going to be enough though to catch here she or hold off the counter attack he's still stretching it it's out to 50 seconds now just a one second reversal there but it's got it's in the right direction what's the problem here with ala philippe he seems having fun with his gears he's gone right down the block there but he's coming back he's on the radio he's but i don't know he's on the radio there i think he's got a bite problem another counter attack again this is roland again isn't it it is i've got a sunspot on him you're along former stage winner of the tour de france not giving up but this might be good for second place most certainly won't catch mark kirshy in the last few few hundred meters of racing actually now the barriers what a sight that is that there is sadly no crowd behind them but once you hit the barriers you know the finish is close oh look at the boy get out the saddle now kick as hard as he likes this is the one third second and now the victory on the stage of the tour de france what a first 12 days of the tour this man has had a third 22 just before the start of the tour you're yours bob third chance lucky for mark hirschy so close in two stages already stage number two in stage number nine beaten by ala felipe beaten by tane pogacha and primo's roe glitch those may be the three best racers in the whole tour de france but now he is going to be amongst the very best in this year's tour mark kirshy living a childhood dream meant five in cantalara his agent and hero when he was nine still has the autograph to this day and a stage win to go with that great ride his team by hershey his team somewhere actually signed him three years ago and they spotted something special in him and he's come out today here on the road to cerron in the longest stage of the tour de france 300 meters to climb to the line this could have spoiled the sprinters anyway up this little hill but look at him he's just he's not interested he's already behind in the tour de france by one hour seven minutes and three seconds he might get two minutes back today and you think he cares not on your life this man has done what he came here to do and he's just gone his little radio there to talk to his team gone said i've done it 22 years of age looks over to make sure wise man see there's nobody sneaking up on those barriers this is it he's going to enjoy the moment as he will give us a two armed salute absolutely superb for marquez sheep and he's a name we're going to call a lot in the years to come it looks like he will unless there's a furious chase from behind doesn't seem that that's going to materialize solid ride i'm sure he would hope for more but he didn't quite have the legs to follow here she won here she attacked miles before the finish but pretty good ride for pierre london promising that he's in decent form with the big mountain stages to come where he's won before well that's a good catch for him because he's 21st in the race and he's only 20 minutes behind so this is the rest of the group so he's gaining time here and that is and he climbs very well and of course the outfit he's always raced well he's just round the corner wow first and third for someone that's an incredible day impressive rider pretty upset but he rode a great attacking race as juliana philippe it can't be the way he rode very aggressive in the finale didn't quite have the aplome and grace to stay with hiroshi now look peter sagan is right tucked in there behind greg van avermaet he will want to beat gregor and evermore for the point here he comes he doesn't waste all the energy of his team done to keep him in the position peters again you have to take your hat off has come fighting back from relegation yesterday to take a clutch a point at the line today to keep that competition for green alive just beating greg van avermaet to it hershey gets to win 47 seconds of the good over pierre hollow 52 over craig anderson 52 over kentin pascha kenton fascia and the save on jesus harada all that chasing group given the same time on the line including shachman hool reichenbach in 10th place there takes the final step literally and figuratively here up to the podium as a stage winner for the first time in his career with a 47-second winner [Music] switzerland that is he lives about 300 meters away from his idol fabian cancellar last person to win the stage from switzerland overall standings i feel like i've said this a number of times this week there were points where we're wondering is it going to be a gc day will there be gaps amongst the leaders but it reads just like it did earlier this morning you're going to have to wait 24 more hours tomorrow that you're going to see some changes there tomorrow's definitely the showdown coming up with pretty much a summit finish after another really long stage of almost 120 miles today the third consecutive day primos roglic in yellow and tomorrow stage 13 will be the fourth in a row this race goes to the mountains tomorrow very very finely poised you
