it's the first time trial day of this year's tour de france as we follow every rider live on our coverage presented by rocket mortgage as we leave a nearby changie and go to laval they're not very far apart the route is almost circular i'm phil liggett and alongside me well not quite he's in new york but let's go to bob roll to take us around the route bob a testing race against the clock the geico stage map suggests this 17 miles of agony for the protagonists of the tour de france gc and stage win up for grabs it is twisty it's not flat it's one for the specialist though most certainly time check twice bone shop and sanjay mayen and laval is the finishing town and there are some twists and turns and a couple of climbs that will test the legs but it is one for the riders that have the power and have the motivation have the aerodynamics to excel and i think it's going to shake up the gc considerably it's going to look a lot different at the end of today's stage than it does at the start that's for sure phil he could be living a dream here can he do a time that will stand the day and there's the rain on the window as well of our camera as this is mikael coming to the cheers here he's still on the best time at the moment well in on it he's over a minute to the good but he'll lose a little bit of time he might even get in inside that 33 minute mark just oh my goodness he came got to be so careful if that rain is putting moisture on the road that will be disaster 33 minutes and one second even way quicker than i thought bob nearly 53 seconds to the good that is a spectacular ride by mikhail bierick being given the green light by his team of the defending champion teddy pagacha to go for it in the time trial he's made the most of that opportunity almost a minute faster than harry sweeney and that might take some beating phil and the rain starting to fall it's going to make the course a lot slower for the riders to come as long as it's raining that's for certain because there's so many twists and turns out on the race course well a brief look there of jesus herrera now we switched to mark cavenish here who was caught by mikael berg for 90 seconds from the start house no serious effort from mark he'll be back in the sprinting chair tomorrow though if he can be as he comes up to the line this has been a virtual extra rest day in the tour de france for mark cavendish he spent the whole ride around the course just dreaming of what happened yesterday when he won his 31st stage of the tour de france walking on sunshine i would imagine i'd be surprised if mark was able to get much sleep last night after delivering one of the most spectacular things i've ever seen in my entire life as a cyclist as a professional at the tour and commentating on it many years since hey look at this mateo catanio has got the best time at this next at the opening check he has gone through six seconds better than mikhail burke now that is a little bit of a surprise uh but the roads you might be right bob the roads are drying out stefan kung out on course but matteo cataneau setting a pretty spectacular time there six seconds quicker than bierg and no one's been able to get anywhere close to him at the finishing line so mikhail bierich now maybe as nervous as he's been big change in this checkpoint number one nielsen paulus even five seconds better than cataneo oh oh my goodness me it's all happening now we're into the last 45 riders to take the tour de france road today and they are getting quicker and the quicker and the weather has gone back in their favor powerless has done a terrific opener there so let's check in now with adam blide adam phil i'm just waiting on a roundabout for nielsen to come through but that time explains the drier roads the roads at the minute i'm about just over halfway and the roads are all dry it's a little bit wet where i am now but they are definitely drying up which is gonna lend itself to the favorites of today's race for sure [Applause] adam blight must be getting to know the course now bob because he's not allowed to turn around and go against the race so he's literally riding in circles for us today he can only let the riders come to him now back to stefan kung the rider i think now is rewriting that leaderboard he looks good in the time trial and this is his speciality european champion swiss champion and coming through with all the time we're waiting to see what he's like at the second checkpoint at the first checkpoint at saint john mayon he was the best time by nine seconds ahead of nielsen uh catanio and then the leader in the finnish bjerg who's 20 seconds slower at that first checkpoint this is catanio cataneo let's see what his pacing was like and uh of course miquel bierg he paced out his effort perfectly so dosing the effort required equally throughout the whole of the 17 miles and if you start too fast you go into the red you pay for it for the rest of the race i have a feeling bob that this man is going to sneak inside 33 minutes by the skin of his teeth and if he does he'll be the new leader in the house remember he was clear of and then he fell behind him by three seconds he could well have he covered that last time on these smooth roads through the twists and turns this will be a result for him he was in third place in the national time trial championships this year he could be going one better right now and being the number one at the finish line very very close he's aiming at 3301 this is the tricky corner where we all close our eyes but it's nice and dry now as he's really giving it his best shot this could be his biggest moment in his history if he comes off this bend with the time he's aiming at 3301 he's almost at the finish approaching 400 meters inside a big sprint to the line mattia cantoneo could be doing exactly this now and taking the lead he swings into the whole state he's got 10 seconds to get there it is the sprint of his life because he's gone there and he's done it by nearly six seconds he is the new leader after the hours we spent talking about mikhail bjerg we now have an italian on top now 30 30 50. it's going to be i think a pretty emphatic victory he's rocking and rolling here he will know exactly where he where he is situated but can he keep this pressure on as he runs down there in fact he wasn't in the last kilometer he is now though so 32 i think he's going to win by about 15 seconds at the moment bob what do you think or at least go into the lead so stephen coons continue to maintain his pace he's inside of the last kilometer he's got plenty of time to get to the finish and better the time of coutineo and how that stacks up especially depending on the weather will remain to be seen but a very very good ride by stephen the current european time trialling champion applying his trade in the time trials and if you look at his face you know he's going flat out to the line looks rock solid and smooth from the pedaling style but from his facial expression all in for his the best that he can do could go into the lead could win the stage as he makes that caller he has now one minute in hand to get to the finish some 450 meters to the line this is going to be an emphatic beating of the best time so far and remember cantoneo only just finished a while back now only and delivering a time of 32-55 his face is grimaced he's now focused on the finishing line the clock counts towards 55 but the finishing line is gonna come quickly first place by a massive 36 seconds bob fantastic ride by stefan kuhn a crushing time trialling effort was the fastest at the first check fastest at the second check but by a little bit less but he must have paced himself perfectly in that section and then really poured on the coals to the finish line a huge lead now over cataneo of over 36 seconds by stephen well he set himself up now for his third time trial win of the season he won the national title and he also won a stage in the um tour of valencia which was the time trial and teddy forgotcha is down at the ramp his bike whatever it was is all set to go now can he produce the time trial of his life and get the time that will give him a yellow jersey today [Music] he won the tour de france last year in a time trial but he was up a mountain in the alps and he took the lead away on the eve of the finish of the tour de france from his countryman primoscognitch the two slovenians became superstars overnight in their country they're still going head-to-head this time out too now we'll see what he can do could be a a struggle for the day for pogacchia here comes ascerine to the finish third quickest losing nearly 20 seconds to stephan kung steffen kung's time looking better and better throughout the day phil i'm afraid so ash green set the best time and it still stands by the way the first checkpoint he slipped away to third at the second and now he's just finished with the third best time now let's have a look at the start house here and watch the clock i'm just we're just wanting to be started a little bit uh he was he was all you know i think he started a second early bubble i think you're absolutely right about that and both officials shaking their head there and that could be wow a penalty for teddy pogaccha if they enforce that he was already pushing out and just look at the two officials looking at each other one saying well what they do he might well what might happen there when he's finished his ride they might dock him two seconds for a false start but do you know i've never heard of that happening before bob so i don't really know the answer [Music] [Applause] without doubt the biggest cheer look at this vanderpool closes down at this fifth stage of the tour de france wearing yellow a specially designed skin suit that he's got he had to design people in last night to measure him up and as around the pool racing this tour for his grandfather raymond polidor who was one of the stars of the tour de france and his grandfather as well will the story continue by the end of this time trap at the moment it is still kung in the winner's house and this is lucenko who's gone through with the fifth best time at the second check let's get back out this is a great story bob adrie vanderpool his father is watching every pedal rev of his son and of course we saw the tears from audrey when he pulled on yellow for his grandfather raymond poridor [Applause] let's have a look at checkpoint one because he's just gone through teddy pogcha is best time bob 10 minutes 38 seconds 10 seconds better than casper asgreen and jonas vinger guard and kong is back at 11. that's an impressive ride by today paul gotcha i think he's using the early climbs to get an advantage on the time he might lose on the flatter part of the course and this looks like jakob pugelsang coming to the finish line but today on track to do a good ride he already has an advantage over his rivals sitting sixth in the overall settings to start today well to take over the race leaders at yellow jersey pagacio needs a few more seconds on that but let's check in quickly with adam blythe now [Applause] so i'm just behind pikachu now phil and what's interesting every time the roadster goes down he dips his head down he tucks it as far as he can in between his shoulders he's trying to squeeze out every little bit of aerodynamic advantage as possible and we've seen he's using it to full effect up on the first split well he's got to get into the finishing line 39 seconds better than the time set by this rider here if he wants yellow and of course we still got to calculate the other five riders who are ahead of him in the overall classification but for the moment machiavelli he will know already bob just how well his body's going but here he comes today pagasha is flying he's still on the best time here he's on the best time at checkpoint one he continues to stay on the best time now 17 seconds quicker than a stephan kung who was the best time at this point this spider you know is racing to the yellow jersey bob he is very close to getting that starting the day 39 seconds slower than matthew vanderbilt we'll have to see how vanderpoll gets to the time checks but teddy pulcacha compared to his rivals especially absolutely flying so far spectacular as long as he hasn't overcooked it phil he should be in for a great time at the finish well it's only day five of the tour de france he got his hands on the yellow jersey on day 20 last year and took it to paris it's an awful long way to paris this time a lot of work lies ahead yet and this man may have the final word we don't know how well he's going yet here we are vanderpool is staying there he's in equal a second place with vanessa so he's separated by tenths of a second and then 31 just ahead of him with pogaccha so seven seconds lost only a strong man's finish he could still turn around while fan art he's out on course but at the same time at the first checkpoint as the the yellow jersey of vanderpoll but they are considerably slower than today pogacha but kanye pogacchia starting the day 39 seconds behind the race leader matthew vanderpool so matthew vanderbilt has done plenty so far to keep his jersey at the end of the day when it's up to abandon pole now to find some special legs over the second half of the race we're looking at van air to his battling all the way locked equal banner with vanderpool a belgian and a dutchman locked in competition rises a man from slovenia who's heading up the race and it's not only a map for slovenia it's the winner of the tour de france one year ago and then he was the youngest rider since 1904 to win this race this is the manchester spoiler party metro vanderpool should have plenty of power for the individual effort coming from cycle cross and mountain biking and we'll just have to see if his inexperience doesn't cost him he started very well there's no question about that but can he finish it off and this rider can start dreaming too maybe it's yellow five kilometers to the finish 17 seconds faster so far then stefan kung that could translate to the 39 seconds he needs over matthew vanderpool at the finish line most certainly this is alexey lucenko coming up towards the finish he's a pretty good time charles and it's coming evident now riding up to seventh place finish as he hits the line that's what he'll get seventh place on the board good ride by the senko bogatya living through the pain barrier now the belgians have a wonderful saying in time trialling if you can suffer for 10 minutes longer than the other man you'll win 10 minutes is a lifetime bob you're going to need 30 in this 30 minutes in this course teddy paga he's already gone through 20 of those and local culturemen coming towards the finish line losing a fair amount of time excuse me the second the second intermediate check for kelderman wow a minute six slower than pagacha pogacha is flying yes he's absolutely fine keldamer could find himself two minutes down by the end the way this man is going this is van hart again still officially sitting second on the road with mature van der pol split by hundredths of a second not there yet but now we're going to see what happens yeah he's just ticking down now then they go to red how close is he to the stop of the clock and so as he comes through it looks as though he was seven seconds down at the last check he's losing ground to bogatya quite significantly at this moment and the last third of the race is even harder oh my goodness 21 seconds now bobby lost seven at the first check he's lost another 14 now to this man well i'll tell you it seems everybody cries when they get to the finish and get awarded the yellow jersey on this year's tour de france i've nicknamed it the tour de tias that's a silly place to part the car but pagash has gone through and gotcha when we get his time we'll know exactly what vanderpool must do but at the moment he is still in yellow at this stage i mean this bike ride he looks like the winner of the tour de france whatever happens today i've been so skillfully avoiding the crashes so far as bike handling skills never a question this is the only question mark is a flat time trial and he's proving to be the measure of that for sure teddy pagacha now just a couple of turns away i only just got around that turn because he came on it so fast now he gets his teeth the time is there for you to see it's the best time we've seen so far stefan come 32 minutes 19 is the time to beat that won't be a problem for today forgot and then we'll have to see what the rest do behind every time he comes off the corners for the fight to get to the line he gets their best time by 18 seconds 32 minutes flat for today for gotcha now spectacular yeah by pogacha that was an impressive ride and whether or not it is enough to take the yellow jersey only time will tell but tare pogata against his rivals that had finished so far an emphatic demonstration of his ability and stephen out of the hot seat after many many riders he's been able to overcome but the defending champion of the tour eventually faster in the stage than stephan kung who is right well we're all going to sit on the edge of our seats now machiavelli has got to get across that finishing line here he is in 32 minutes 38 seconds if he doesn't he loses the yellow jersey it is i have to hand it to the organizer they always seem to plan these routes and they give us a nail-biting experience in the time trials and the pool been in yellow for three days hopes to make it four julian alifleev been in yellow for one day hoped to have made it again today he's simply fallen away from the leaderboard it hasn't been a great time trial by allah philippe today he'd be disappointed a long empty road ahead now for julia alaphilippe now keep the congratulations for just a little bit longer but he's what he has done though bob he's closed the gap on everybody for the overall chase to paris well emphatically faster than primos roglic and garrett thomas that's for certain let's see how he goes against carapaz and ala philippe yet to finish but this man holding his own still in with the chance to keep the yellow jersey and that would be a spectacular result for matthew van der pol it's very difficult not to show your bias and shout back to you vanderpollon because i know his father i knew raymond pulled it up and he's fighting and this is also the same could be said here of their van art also a man who's going to do a great time today today but he's coming back from illness and it might be he's just a little bit below the form he wanted he's still up amongst the leaderboard either way he was 21 seconds off the time of pagatcha when we went through checkpoint number two as he recovered it seems the third sector of this call riders do recover well then our very different body language than tani pagacha who was out of the saddle sprinting up these stretches of roadway well bernard in a much smaller gear and trying to get the most aerodynamic he can out of the bike now he's out of the saddle and sprinting but it seemed to me that today bogaty was quite a bit quicker on this section of roadway phil yeah i agree but the time will tell it's the race of truth we always call it the time doesn't lie but that does bring forward the question is whether forgatchet will get penalized one or two seconds because by my reckoning he did start ahead of the release that but it's nothing to do with the referee's decision but if i was a rival who finished second by a second i would certainly lodge a complaint that's for sure it's starting to improve his chances to keep that yellow jersey ala philippe to the finish line bit of a disappointment he will not be happy with this plenty of stages left for ala philippe the first yellow jersey of this year's tour de france pushing 11th place at the moment as he comes up to the line already lost a minute to pagatcha so he's tell by the shake of his head he knows what's happened he knows this is not good enough today for julian alaphilippe still going to be happy in the overall standings but uh not what he hoped for i don't think phil uh now minute 10 slower than pogaccia one man left on course the mayo jaune of the 177 riders left in this year's tour de france he is literally racing for one two and maybe three seconds that's what he's got to grid his teeth and hope for if he's to keep yellow if he goes three seconds the wrong way he will lose yellow as he just about clips those barriers he's taking every possible chance gets back quickly into the time to our position he's nipping off the edge of the road he knows every second he's counting he needs a 32 minutes 38 he's got 32.05 the time of stefan condell is 32-19 in second place he's already fallen behind the time of pagatcha but he's got to hold on he's got to get across that line in 38 for 38 seconds mouth wide open he's sprinting he's seeing the finish now it's going to be desperately close he is after going to produce the sprint of his life he's got 10 seconds 10 seconds to keep yellow he comes over the line he's done it that is absolutely incredible bob 13.99 seconds behind he keeps yellow tonight leaving nothing left on the road matthew vanderpool has done it he's defended his yellow jersey against all odds a tremendous ride by vanderpool to stay in the yellow jersey great by ride by pogaccia but matthew vanderpal stays in the yellow jersey another day keeping his dream going in the tour de france so far that is an incredible ride he didn't think he would keep it he said it himself but he's been able to do some better today by 19 seconds than second place finisher stefan kuhn and matthew vanderpool in fifth ass green was strong roe glitch coming in there at 7th and richie port we saw him just under a minute behind today pagacha the stage winner today 19 seconds better than anyone else [Music] absolutely flying all day long there was never a moment where he was pausing on time everything was always putting time into every rider behind him i'm really looking towards that gc battle and most of gc guys are way behind them right now we knew this time trial would have an effect on the gc standings the first big gc day today you can see the arrows pointing up or the red going down depending on how they're doing so it's vanderpool by eight seconds over pagacha and then nice gap there 30 seconds back is wow van earth allah felipe goes all the way down to 48 seconds back he started the day only eight seconds behind rodlich 148 back richard carapaz tough day for him he's 144 back [Music] we just saw vanderpall on the podium pardon me we saw and there's vanderpool the yellow jersey winner keeps it on his back for a fourth consecutive day he'll start tomorrow with it on [Applause] seemed to be in doubt there about halfway through the ride with how strong today pagacha was no movement here today shelling keeps the polka dot jersey for the top climber and batter pool just behind him we also see julian ala alaphilippe and shelling tour rookie how much fun is he first time out of the tour just every day steps up right there in the polka dots uh he's winning the fun competition by a long shot he's got the polka dots but he is smiling ear to ear i mean working with the crowd going through the kom's okay he's only got a few points five points is not really anything to talk about coming paris but hey he's won already he's won already and been in the break the first three days each day in a row that's always fun being in the break up there at the tour de france mark cavendish top sprinter's so far top story really with the way he won his 31st tour stage yesterday and i'll have to leave just behind him and i believe that the finished town tomorrow mark cavendish has won there one of his 31 tour victories coming where they will end up tomorrow yeah i think you're right i think it might have been one of his first victories back in 08 so yeah mark cavendish i mean this is so unlikely here just to see him at the tour de france winning stage and now on the podium with the green jersey mark even shaking his head a bit no surprise top young rider today for gotcha remains there white jersey as he pursues the yellow getting closer and closer to being the race leader but right now he'll settle for being the settle for being the top rider under the age of 25. you
