we're looking at the city of lyon the second largest city in france we're heading now to the jura mountains uh a ride of 108 miles it stage 15 of the tour de france live presented by rocky mortgage big rendezvous day today we're on the eve of the rest day tomorrow but it might change the overall classification we're just about to hit the start line i'm phil liggett alongside me well three and a half thousand miles away but still alongside me is bob roll nervous moment i think today for the peloton 157 riders in that peloton surviving from the 176 that started from these 15 days ago they're getting ready for the start this is francois lu marshall on the front at the flag we're underway bob on the geico stage map it all happens at the end today and a half miles coursing due east to the three beasts of the stage keep an eye on the finale massive elevation gains and losses in the closing kilometers of the stage from intal co de la beach and the grand columbia it's been raced up before phil but that wasn't 40 years ago in the tour de la venir and that stage taken out by the great soviet writer sukuro chinkov this is not a good sight we're only eight miles into today's stage on the flat road and this is sergio aguita the champion of colombia being attended by the doctor he has just fallen off but he's got up at least bob he's got a long ways to catch the field they're absolutely flying at the moment trying to get the early breakaway going he's going to need some help from his teammates to get back in the field jungles see what happened white and blue swinging off just as iguita looks over his shoulder to see what part of the race and just a touch of wheels there and iguita goes down i'm not certain why jungle swung so far off his line but igita looking back behind to see if they had a gap because he's trying to get in the breakaway and just cross wheels with bob young that's a tough way to crash we do have this seven riders trying to get clear pierre hollande again in the move simon geschke is the rider with the beard obscured on the right of our picture trenta is the orange jersey coming towards us he's a good sprinter michael ogler team ntt in the blue there marco mercato la d'anoa under the sprinter there benny fazio he's on the front right now it's a working group and the riders i've got the right combination perhaps that the leaders won't chase bob but the sprinters might not want this to go well bob it's an emotional moment for everybody all the work put in to do the tour de france it's his first tour de france for the champion of colombia he was promising a lot and and he's leaving by what they call the little door it's a very very sad time but it was such a silly crash and he can't believe he's in this situation that's why he's crying it was all going well at the start this morning oh there's another crash out i don't believe this there's this hofstetter on the ground but who is the ineos right i think it's civil cop again is it that's oh it's calabash richard cara pass well that's bad luck for richard he again is a number two man on the ineos team to look after aegon bernal the rider we were just speaking to taking a little time to sort themselves out can we see how it happened here didn't quite see it happen the riders all avoided it it was pretty well down the peloton i think that's hostette he's been riding very well but he's not a climber but richard carapaz win of the tour of italy last year first ever ride of ecuador to win that race been brought in the tour de france to try and help aegon bernal win it again we've got an attack there has gone off the front i think uh this is um exactly tim declared he goes off the left that tried to draw the sting off the sprinters but no as screen is trying to lead mork off morkov is leading bennett and sagan is tucked on the green jersey there of sam bennett well this is a long line here well it's a perfect lead out for both sagan and the green jersey of bennett now we're going to see which one of these two is the faster bennett knows he's looked over his shoulder he's looked straight at the face of peter sagan and remember sagan has never lost this green jersey in paris when he's got there and he's gone first and he's pushed bennett to take the outside he's gone over the top he's taking on walk off but bennett is too quick when it matters he gets best to the rest then plays two points difference too yeah markov hanging on for second in that group spread his fur another point against peter sagan so in effect bennett will gain two points on sagan for that in that sprint right there and that's a i mean we would never have seen that in years past from petersegon he would never lose a situation like that um and sam bennett is proving to be a worthy adversary in the green point and watch more cops also sprinting flat out to try to get the better of peter peter gave uh bennett a little bit of a hook there to leave him no choice but to go up on the rails yesterday caleb and he's right on cue because there he is one five one and at the back of the bunch he got inside the time cut by just about five minutes he was last ride at the finish yesterday so he's gonna feel a little bit worried about today and nervous but he's riding with sam bennett who actually lived together not actually together in the same apartment in monaco uh with their respective spouses and um so they know each other quite well although the deadly rivals on the bike they're actually great friends off it maybe sam and ewan here are going to ride together to the finish takers sam's got all his teammates around him including julian alaphilippe there but yeah that's 41. they're very serious about his green jersey and getting him through this stage safely inside the time limit they can lose about eight nine minutes per climb and not worry about it but if they're starting to lose 10 minutes per climb then there could be serious problems for making the time limit so de koonick not taking any chances sending at least three team teammates already to stay with sam bennett throughout these climbs and it looks like trentine has gone off the back at the same time his teammate has gone off the front because that's an attack by simon geschke former state former stage winner in a very similar situation from the breakaway pierre roland himself maybe the best climber in the group chasing geschke down let's see who comes with him the other really good club climber and that's jesus harada second on the stage to molt agual a few days ago even a week ago let's uh be be more accurate um he was second behind luke senko in a real battle between hirata and lucenko for that stage win jesus harada is trying to give team kofidis in the white and red jersey just behind our two leaders their first win since 2008 so 12 year drought let's see if harrata can close down this big acceleration by simon geschke in the orange of ccc i think it's a coming together of the three musketeers here because these are the three best climbers in that group and this is the move now they won't want to be seen again as they continue now to slip away from the back of the race this is marco mercato from the breakaway gone now the three climbers have come to the top gesco who won in prolonged not all that many million miles away from where we are here and uh roloff he's won twice in the alps as well and coming up behind him jesus herrera those three men get together they'll be strong to help each other i've seen lucrow sit at the front and bash out the tempo for hour after hour and he suddenly dropped on the first climb of three day three climbs today and i think this is not a good sign for the team well it's a big difference between having the yellow jersey and trying to get the yellow jersey fill and when you're trying to get the yellow jersey you need the freshest athletes you can and until again bernal does that that will tell the difference if if luke rowe is up to the task once they have the yellow jersey if he's off the back so early in a mountain stage i would be very worried if i was a team manager yeah this is daniel loss i think it was we just passed it all these riders just dropping off the back of the bunch all under the the work there is uh itaday bagatcha and he's promised he will try for a few seconds back today as we can see this is a very narrow climb by the way i'll have to tell you that you can see it's a very narrow climber it twists and turns all the way and the descent is equally hazardous it gets steeper and steeper as it gets nearer to the top and there's a a very steep 22 percent grade just near the top of the king of the mountain point pretty close to the summit now but there's more trouble here for ineos amador number two has gone and number eight is dylan van bol two more riders and another one up front also so we're getting a situation where their team is getting wiped out here that is really worrying for ineos luke growth is one thing as pierollon attacks but richard carapaz that's a whole nother kettle of fish for ineos that's really a bad sign for team ineos now they're gonna start freelancing with other teams to try and keep their man up there now pierre rolon is going for the king of the mountains points here and he's being challenged by jesus herrera and a rad is up for the fight he's gone over the top of roulette roland has desisted ten points over the top of this this is when the king of the mountains really starts and harada gets the ten points from pierre rolon corrado will have a chance to get first sight at the descent goggle just caught up before the attacks for the kom points there's kosovo he will not get any points yeah another mountain gone behind him he's still the lead in the king of the mountains but he is in desperate trouble on this climb this is a mountain too far for him it's too steep and an almost identical stage being reenacted here in the tour de france and on that occasion aegon bernal finished six seconds behind rogue glitch and nairo quintana nine seconds behind and gil martin also nine seconds behind uh so tede pogachad was not at that stage race and he does not know this final climb but his teammates certainly do and hopefully one of them is david de la cruz who's maybe the last man with him at the top of this climb roglic feeling very pleased with his team just now he's got all of the strong riders in front in number one going through that's aegon bear now last year's winner well they're really rocking and rolling here just 30 seconds ahead of roll on now might have gone a little bit too early but he had to he's not as good a climber perhaps as roland is so he had to get a little bit of daylight on the descent um and whether or not he can have enough to stay with roland at the top of this next climb that remains to be seen but at least he's given himself a chance to do so we're looking here at one of those teammates in trouble it is pavel sivakov uh as they continue what do you think bob the tactics of uh of pro primos rogers look pretty supreme just now well yeah if they want to get rid of the teammates of aegon bernard they're doing a great job doing that quiet koski's still with again bernal if i'm not mistaken they have a very similar position on the bicycle so if a bike change was required and the team cars were a long ways back he's got the choice between andre amador who's right there i can see him in the dark blue with the red helmet and michael quiacosky so far it really depends on how well aegon is riding barring catastrophe he should be able to get to the bottom of the last climb on equal terms with primos roglich the race leader there's a few people managed to somehow get themselves up here even a car over there must have come up in the middle of the night i would think might be their house in the trees there and parking in the driveway well there he goes it roll on second on the previous climb first on this one and he's got the 10 points and then over the top goes gogula followed by harada that's the results over the climb roll on and overall there he is is into fourth place now with 20 points for grabs on the last climb of the day this is back up front this is michael gogle he's an austrian rider rides for the team ntt which is basically japanese sponsored these days although it's licensed in south africa and pierre rolon will they be the heroes of the day but can they survive the last 17 miles of it again burnout down some riders luke rowe his teammate dropped a long time ago so again bernal he does have um he does have jonathan castro viejo and i have seen michael quiakowski there but there should be a pretty big battle for position before the beginning of the last climb and that's when you need your teammates and primos row glitch has got a pile of them right in front of him he's fourth wheel but still five teammates from yamba visma the man from durango number 16 cepcus if he's got good legs he'll be at the front of the field for the last climb and let's not forget there's 10 seconds time bonus at the top for the stage winner well just there the back off three riders left including at the last year's tour winner he wears number one aegon bernal mclaren have got their three strong win there too michael lander pelo bilbao and damiano caruso so there's a huge battle in progress here as we head towards the climb his guillotine not again oh this man must be the most unfortunate rider in the bunch he's dropped from third place overall because of problems spare bike as quickly as possible but that is so painful to get started again when you're just starting to reopen up your respiratory system you're at the bottom of a long hard climb and now you're 30 seconds to a minute behind and it's agonizing to restart the body and try to close the disadvantage down gail martin had a tough day two days ago lost a lot of time on the puimeri falling out of the top 10 in the overall standings but presumably still riding well here he is trying to catch back up to the the main group hey sink in the yellow jersey has pulled off a teammate's waiting for him to try to get him back into the fold looks like it might be jesus harada his teammate that's him now job done for the day and guillermo trying to get back the cars are getting a little bit in the way of the climber here from france there's paga down there i wonder what he's thinking right now he looks as though he's riding well within himself but he's not just taking on the race lead in the yellow jersey he's got the whole team there to contend with at the moment there he is center white jersey now looking very very good david de la cruz is still with him pacing and helping him only teammate he's got left can't see number one that is the yellow jersey of roglic in a perfect springboard position when he wants to go i can't believe they're climbing this hill all as this rather select little bunch here now what's happened here looks like goggle has cracked a little bit because pierre rolon says if we're going to get to the top we've got to go quicker than this because that peloton is only 75 seconds behind us so the frenchman is pressing on he's proven him to be a better climber than goku google better descending but pierollan's obvious advantage in the climbs now in full effect i both are going to get caught phil before the finish but pierre along giving it one last shot at glory will not will not hold off the field once they start firing at just over a minute a minute and 12 now behind pierre roland oh nairo quintana that's not where you expect him to be at the bottom at the back of the front group but still really big and quintana looks to be in trouble at the moment phil now his arm left arm is bandaged and he was involved in the crash which took out uh in the end bauker monimer and roman baday in that crash and so maybe he's struggling a little bit because the aftermath of the fall but he's tacked on the back there but look at the way they're driving this the men in yellow here's the overall situation take a note of it now because i think you're going to see it change now one way or the other quintana is fifth the minute 12 seconds he could be falling out of the top five bernal is in difficulty we i don't know if we got pictures of this but aegon bernal is in difficulty there he is number one he's on the tail and quintana's come up alongside him and immediately help has fallen back in the former castro viejo a gown bear now is in difficulty we never saw this last year bob and jumbo viesma must have gotten the word from the team car go as hard as you can go as hard as you think you should egan bernal is in big trouble the defending champion his two teammates that are left for trying to help him nairo quintana also dropped big drama for again bernal this could be the end of his charge at the tour de france this year and the whole of team inias because they've all imploded now we've got number five is krakowski and quintana is with him and gone past him to try and get back in because he was also in trouble so that is a second overall in the race and also fifth overall in the race have been left and then still an awful long way to climb eight miles they can pass out the top tier top ten riders with so far to go to the finish never see negan bernal struggling in the mountains like this ever bernal having a tough day a couple days ago lost a little bit of time but now he stands to lose massive time and shaking his head there is tour de france challenge might be over on the slopes of this the grand columbia he can't believe it bobby's it's never be he's never been in this position in his young career you could see he's so annoyed with himself but he can't do anything about it and primos roglic will know and his team will know and they're going to stamp on those pedals now and quintana trying to ride away from him there start the day in fifth pull the camera back there is last year's winner this narrow climb in the jura mountains doing more damage today than the tour has done in the last 15. they're now 59 seconds off this man is living his own private nightmare and i'll tell you what adam yates there he is has just hit them he's attacked he was the rider was saying he's off in search of a grand tour when he's never done as he continues to climb now can he break the elastic they may not go for him there's the attacker a little moments ago a good position right from the back of the boys in yellow hit them hard now what can he do bobby starts the day a minute and 42 and that's all off roglic 10 second win bonus as well further down the mountain that's again bernal glued to the wheel of his teammate kuyatkowski they've just picked up walt von art in the yellow jersey without wild fine arts done his job for today reducing the front group to a very select few and you will the face of nairo quintana also cracked about the same time as aegon burnout fighting to get back on terms here ellison just behind in there grimacing and hoping they've called adam yates to put him back in his place first attack so he slipped down but he might try again yeah i'm sure he'll try again and that did have the effect of dropping a few guys maybe he's trying to get rid of the teammates of the other gc contenders with the hope that they will start to look at each other and not want to extend themselves with so many difficult stages in the mountains to come so adam yates i think that was a good tactic i wouldn't say it was a write-off because he has been caught um so there's landa who ran on his wheel bilbao one last teammate for mikhail landa from bahrain and the ride to the back there number 71 of ef i must say that riders found his legs in this tour now rigoberto going to be in a podium position by the end of this day as we see now these riders keep the tempo going they've about 16 17 minutes left to race to the summit that's the effort they must make we are three miles from the top of the mountain the bernal group is dropping down now quite quickly i think from these leaders i don't think we're going to be talking too much about aegon burnout as a potential podium after the end of this day bob well he's the last time check almost three minutes down and he's gonna plummet out of the top ten it'd be very surprising and once you once it starts going poorly in the mountains you almost never are able to reverse your time losses uh so again bernal uh maybe he can fight his way back into the top ten but that would be a shock but the podium forget about it what is picacho going to do in these last 1.7 miles pretty much a dead straight up the side of the mountain to the finish from two and a half kilometers to go which they will arrive at pretty soon some more steep gradients still up to come the steepest parts have been climbed but plenty of climbing left and i'm surprised that no one is attacked i think it's just because the tempo of tom dumoulin has just been so pulverizing nobody has the legs to attack if they attack they probably blow up and so they're content so far to sit on the wheels see if roglich himself does not go for some of the time bonuses on offer at the finish line i would give him the best chance to win the stage amongst the riders that are left in the front well it's a private hell out there for most of these riders but they're going to take a lot of strength and the fact that they've got rid of last year's winner aegon bernal that'll help keep the pressure on them we're getting all the black is over 9.4 percent and we finish in the black so there's no respite until we get to the very very top the finishing line that was two kilometers to go for the leaders now they're getting very close to the finish this is nairo quintana still being nicely placed by warren baghill and as they tried to just hold the losses today i saw tarepogachar moving up just behind the yumbo train at the front so watch for today maybe the most likely rider to put an attack in the last two k's of the stage it gets very steep in the last kilometer 10 gradient and so let's say if i'm sure teddy if he can he will attack but the tempo is so incredibly fast right now but watch out for packaging right on the tail now of said coos in that white jersey still looking extremely strong there's valverde in the blue jersey near the back alongside adam yates and here we go a little bit and it's gone himself now it's a race for the finish now it's a show of strength by the man who leads the tour immediately counted by pagaccia seb coos and valverde sabkus moving forward to lead out primo's road glitch tide pogacha on the wheel roglius 450 meters ago miguel han lopez and the turquoise has made it with richie port clear daylight between the other gc riders rigoberto iran trying to get back in the pink jersey rigger bertrand dug deep yes you're right miguel and her lopez it was i thought it was valverde suddenly still on the back there in fact losing a bit of ground just now 300 meters to go a 10-second bonus who would have thought well if richie port is driving for the 10-second bonus roglidge is trying to hold on to richie paul pagacha is pedaling smoothly and just following roglic here a 10-second bonus six seconds for the second player i can't believe we're talking about silly little time bonuses on the 15th day of the tour de france on a real remote mountain in the jurors richie paul trying again to hold off pagan is there anything left in the legs of these riders because up on the right goes pagachi he said he would attack his countryman attack him he has but roglish has got his wheel taking the inside lane here but can paga get this second win of this tour for him i think he can and he's going to get a little time gap and a four second difference in time bonuses as richie port crosses in third place what a race to the line angel lopez there in fourth as they come up to the line bob enrique moss coming across cepcus another great ride by the man from durango there is adam yates landa euron he iran excuse me valverde bilbao tom dom and that is a brutal climb everybody just collapsing just over the finish line the helpers trying to get them out of the way spectacular ride also by tom dumoulin there's the stage winner no doubt about who is the quickest in the last couple of hundred meters he gets another four seconds closer yeah and there might be a little bit of a time gap also so four or five seconds to the better yeah still it's a long way to the finish line it is this has been a huge day in the tour today the ups and downs and the favorites distinct for all to see kenny ellison in the white helmet coming through just their head of quintana hits the line at 3 48. oh that's a lot that's painful the grand columbia has been decisive in the tour decisive in the stage and no way again bernal can recoup this type of time losses between now and the finish in paris [Music] he hits the line about seven eighteen seven minutes seven million i can't believe i'm saying that seven minutes nineteen seconds uh lost by last year's winner of the tour all right stage results stage 15 oh gotcha as we just saw from a number of angles he wins he also picks up four seconds on roe glitch but he he kept himself right there and as you saw there the man in the yellow finish just behind gotchas page two step coo say happy birthday turn 26 and finishes in sixth place today and i know his teammate primos roglic and yellow really appreciated what he did this afternoon as well stage 15 just wrapped up atop the columbia first summit finish without the columbia and today pogacha wins the stage for the second time in the last week he increased his strength i guess you could say in second place he went from down 44. now he's down 40 seconds to primos roguelitch and once again increasing his confidence again of how strong he is against in his own world's unstoppable roglitch and it was uh it was three guys coming down the stretch roglic oh gotcha and richie port and richie port was there as well in the overall standings now roglich up by 40 seconds came in just behind pogasia and rigoberto iran now the closest to the lead now page two richie port nice job today he goes from nine to six nairo quintana struggled as well tom dumoulin in there at 10th after a massive pull today all the way to the finish [Music] your most roguelitch will line up on tuesday for his seventh consecutive day in yellow after the rest day tomorrow it could be a lot more than usual you see a lot of team jumbo visma steamrolling the race all through tuesday's stage and really it's all going to be about wednesday looking out there of course you could some kind of damage could happen on tuesday but i don't see it's that likely i'm looking more for wednesday and don't forget on tuesday there is a uphill category one but then a flat section that we roll into the finish where some tactics might play in the park zade bulgacho wins the stage of course remains in white best rider under the age of 25 and still the young age of 21. [Music] really impressive what he found in himself those last couple hundred meters when it was it was ports it was rowlich and paul gotcha and he found a little something extra to separate there in that last little bit of the climb a pair of category ones and then a summit finish eventually won by the man in second place right now who gained four seconds on roglic jonet pogancha celebrates again you
