here are the top five most commonly banned races in d d and also why they're banned let's go one aracocra arakokra are the epitome of doing one thing and doing it really well they fly and they fly freaking fast 50 foot base movement speed even if that was on the ground is just insane and they can do that through the air the only drawback is that you can't fly while wearing medium or heavy armor to put this into perspective the spell fly is a third level spell lasts for 10 minutes requires concentration and gives you 60 foot flying speed aerocochra start the game with 50 foot of fly speed that lasts forever and does not require concentration they literally have a better version of a great third level spell completely for free aragora also get a plus two to dex and a plus one to wisdom making them pre-packaged to be the best monk ever the problem with the race is that they just trivialize so many encounters not even just in the early game but all the way through an adventure dms just don't want to have to deal with adjusting every single encounter in an entire game to have a ton of fast flying enemies or a load of ranged options just to keep a hold on the arachna player the only downside to the race is that apart from that fly speed they don't really do much else i mean they get improved unarmed strikes but most are a cocker are monks and they get those anyway a base walking speed of 25 feet is kind of bad but you're gonna be flying everywhere anyway also they die at just 30 years old which is kind of a bummer for role play but also they mature at three years old which is kind of hilarious for role play i just like the idea of a three-year-old kicking a dragon's ass in a fight alongside an elf that's been around for 700 years arakokra are banned in adventurer's league because of that insane fly speed but if you really want to play one maybe chat to your dm about reducing that 50 foot flight speed down to a more reasonable 30. you'll still be broken but you know it's a token gesture 2. pureblood unt so not only are snake people in control of every major government wake up people they're also disgustingly strong in d and d so the main reason you ansi are so often banned is because of their magical resistance ability this gives them advantage on any save against spells and magical effects from big stuff like throwing off dominate monster or banishment to small stuff like dodging fireballs this is a really powerful ability but unlike aracokra yuanti also have other abilities that make them insanely strong they get straight up immunity to all poison damage have the ever useful dark vision and can cast poison spray and animal friendship infinite times for free although animal friendship can only target snakes they also get a once per long rest casting of suggestion a really powerful spell that can make someone do basically whatever you want as long as it sounds reasonable for example saying audio meant to stand down so we can resolve this peacefully is a reasonable enough idea to give to an enemy captain then when everyone lowers their weapons you can just slaughter them all indiscriminately which brings me nicely to the next point yuan t are so often banned because they are straight up evil the description in d d lore is pretty straightforward they are evil they are devoid of emotion they serve only themselves they're basically mark zuckerberg the race now sure you can just ignore this if you want d d is a game where you can change stuff after all but some dms like to play things by the book when it comes to lore and lineage and for that reason yuanti are often excluded from non-evil campaigns funnily enough satyrs are a race in d d that also get magic resistance and have a few other useful abilities as well but people complain about them way less often it's probably because goats are a lot cuter than evil lizard people but if it's your goal in life to laugh in the face of fireballs or illithids then satyrs or yuanti are definitely the way to go did somebody say life goals sorry who are you i'm motivational monty here to help you achieve your goal be it exercise or starting a creative project or just getting laid 24 7 like i do are you trying to wink right now and when it comes to achieving goals in a way that speaks to the nerd in us all look no further than the heroes journal it is a beautifully illustrated crafted narrative with art that changes each day to turn your goals into a quest that progresses with you there are currently two narratives available the dnd style legend of historia and the harry potter style estoria academy they're also giving away the first 71 pages free on their website to get you started on your journey and there's a black friday sale going on for 30 off selective products and you can use the codes d shorts at checkout for 10 off everything now do you have any questions little girl yeah just the one what are you doing in my house oh yes that reminds me steely sam sends his regards [Music] check out the hero's journal by following the link below three tasha's custom lineage and also variant human so i'm putting these together because the main reason they're banned is the same but custom lineage is definitely banned more often both tasha's custom lineage and variant human give you a free feat at level one beats can be insanely strong and versatile and having one at level one puts this race up there with arakra in terms of early game power seriously custom lineage takes this power even further giving you a plus two in any stat of your choice and dark vision compared to variant humans plus one in any two stats this means that by using the point by system customer lineage can get you an 18 in a stats something that no other race can do at level one for example let's say you're a fighter you put 15 into strength with the point by system you get a plus two to strength from custom lineage and then you take the half feet heavy armor master giving you another plus one to strength at level one you're attacking with a plus six to hit and dealing two d6 plus four damage on a hit then you're also taking three of all incoming bludgeoning piercing and slashing damage and that's just one example there are endless awesome combos you can pull off with this at just level one this power level has led to custom lineage being straight up banned in adventurous league just way too powerful and versatile with that free feat number four war forged so here we have an interesting case of a race being banned not because it's mechanically too strong in combat but because it's absolutely broken in certain types of d d adventures for a start war forged are just really good they don't die of old age they get resistance to poison damage and on saves against the poison condition they get a straight plus one to their ac and a load of other awesome stuff too they also have a really customizable skill set just giving you a straight up proficiency and a skill and tool of your choice but what really earns them the ban hammer is how they just destroy any survival based game you see wolf forge don't need to eat drink or breathe and cannot get diseases for some types of dnd games this just destroys everything some people like to play heavily focused survival based d they put a real focus on hunting for food keeping track of water and resources and battling against the elements now sure most d d games just ignore all of this but if you want a gritty realistic brutal and challenging dnd game where you have to fight to survive war forged crap all over that interestingly the first level spell goodbury is often banned for the same reason as it just straight up negates the threat of starvation finally sometimes war forged our band because they're just too technologically advanced to fit into the dm's vision of their world if you're running a more realistic low magic medieval-based campaign you might not want to have robots walking around 5. tasha's custom origin tasha's custom origin is probably the most controversial addition to the game in the last couple of years it basically says that any proficiency language or stat boost given in a certain race can be swapped out for a different proficiency language or stat boost you can also change your character's subclass any time where you would gain a subclass feature so for example you could be a wild magic barbarian for the first five levels of the game get to level six and then hop across and become a bear totem barbarian instead the controversy here though is that custom origin is seen to erode away a lot of what makes races unique for example half orcs were a typically strong race but now they can be basically anything i personally love this but i can understand why a lot of people [ __ ] hate it now the only reason to be a half fork apart from role play reasons is to get access to that really juicy relentless endurance ability this would give your hypothetical sorcerer a massive boost in longevity and then you can just swap out every other ability to suit the build way more but then you have a half awk that doesn't really have anything to do with the half orc race or what they're supposed to be again i love it i love the role play opportunities it brings but i do understand that a lot of players particularly players who've been playing a long time and have grown attached to the way races behave absolutely despise it it is both extremely powerful and is seen to rob a lot of races of what makes them unique and special and there's the fact that it's incredibly confusing for beginners to get their heads around for all these reasons it is very commonly banned when dms are dealing with character creation remember to check out the patreon to join in games with the community and get access to a ton of maps and custom subclasses also remember to like and subscribe check out other videos on the channel and yeah bye
