they're celebrating their celebrating right now look if you're a coach and you get your team to the biggest game of the year and you lose you've had to win a lot of games you've had to with a lot of big games so what have you done wrong with that opportunity comes the fact that you can be on the wrong in and be one of the lowest points you could ever feel [Music] [Music] [Applause] for a head coach in the NFL there is no greater feather in the cap no better resume builder than winning a championship the flip side of that is a career without one a failure you got to be good and you got to be fortunate to you know have somebody missed a field goal sometimes it's a matter of you know being in the right place at the right time or the wrong place at the wrong time I mean there a lot of great coaches that didn't win a Super Bowl yeah I just hate when any coach gets labeled as a guy who can't win the championship most of the time it comes down to the bounce of the ball where it comes down to the player when you have that many team in a playoff situation and you can't get over the hump yeah I look at the coach the enemy is me it's not them the measurement in all of sports says championships did you win one how many did you win will answer that question who is the best coach who's never won a championship you think you know but you don't know coughs I mean he lives on through eternity for his sound bikes you kidding me playoffs good coach not a great coach if more rough is a sound bite like Belichick we just didn't make enough plays to win I don't think he's remembered as a top-ten coach never once ooh [Music] not being able to get over the hump is something he's always gonna live with as a head coach he just unfortunately had this supreme misfortune of being in the same division at the height of the 49ers dynasty they won 12 games in New Orleans twice and didn't win the division the one year they went 1006 and didn't make the playoffs you kidding me playoffs maura may be famous for his playoffs rant but he is infamous in New Orleans for his failure to actually win in the playoffs his Saints went owing for in the postseason but in 11 years he won more than 54 percent of his games in a town that had never seen a women's season but Jim Mora did in New Orleans was changed a culture and an atmosphere in an environment he brought legitimacy to the franchise which had never had for decades great defenses in New Orleans that he never gets enough credit for for Lineback to go to the Pro Bowl they blitz they came after us we had no success against may not played against what a playoff game in Philadelphia we beat them but that's only because they called the dogs off whatever reason they stopped in the second half I don't know what Jim Orr was thinking about that day we couldn't diddly poo offensively we couldn't make a first down we couldn't run the ball we didn't try to run the ball we couldn't complete a pass we suck our number 10 coach was faced with a similar situation when he took over the moribund Colts in his second year he piloted the greatest turnaround in league history but his postseason difficulties continued the Colts win Owen - in the playoffs running Morris career playoff record - Owen 6 he leaves Tony Dungy comes and they have an extended period of excellence and I think Jim Moore deserves a lot of credit for helping get things pointed in the right direction that's inexcusable inexcusable quite to the contrary what a lot of people think Jim Mora did a great job here we needed discipline when Jim came in the fact that he didn't win a championship was more source of fact that he didn't have talented enough players Jim Moore won championships you want championship in the United States Football League ah that's correct he did win a championship and I don't believe many people take the USFL serious for someone like Jim Moore you got to look at his overall record they're not just the paint his career by the fact that he didn't win a Super Bowl [Applause] of next his teams are never bad enough to get him fired but they're never good enough to put him on that short list of the guys who are clearly the best NFL coaches well let's go that's you then the staying power of number nine on our list I'll tell you this I'd like to have Jeff Fischer coach my football team any day of the year [Music] one NFL executive told me if Jeff Fischer ever got fired he'd have a new job by sundown now so what if he's fired in the late afternoon he said he'd have to bust sundown to see them not win a Super Bowl under his direction is criminal I mean he did this guy is a Super Bowl winning coach without a Super Bowl he takes care of so many of the little things if it means practicing the lateral before the Music City miracle I mean that's the type of attention to detail that Jeff Fisher does you know there's times in practice where we work on these little things and yeah I know some of you stand back for anything she's where they're doing that for he knows how to get the most out of his team and I guess this is wrapped like he's cool his players coach Jeff is awesome but his teams have faltered in the postseason in big spots he's never won it it's a tough thing to do to give - it's like trying to catch a fish barehanded now you think you got in your hand and try to grab onto it you know it slips out and for Jeff he's had he's done everything tech routines every player's situation the all-time winning coach in oiler Titan history [Applause] starting with 10 straight wins 2008 look like it would be Fisher's year Vince Young gone after week one Terry Collins at quarterback dominant defense team that didn't do a lot in free agency to improve itself Jeff Fisher helped that team become much better than it should have been managed bounce in the first round even more unbelievable was Fisher's coaching during the transition between Houston and Tennessee the first year the Titans had a home our number 9 coach led them away to the Super Bowl [Music] [Applause] one yard that's how close Jeff Fisher came to not being on the list of great coaches who never won a championship wouldn't I wrote that script that way most Titans fans will tell you that the more heartbreaking loss was in 2000 the AFC Championship game there are 14 and 2 team taken on the Ravens division rivals and the Ravens just beat up on him Jeff Fisher hasn't coached a Super Bowl since one of these years they're going to put it all together there is a Lombardi Trophy in his future the game's not over for the NFL's longest tenured coach anyone who can last as long as he's lasted as a head coaches League especially without winning the Super Bowl that says a lot [Music] sometimes it just doesn't work out for you you keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground anything can happen [Music] [Music] I'll tell you what I'm looking at this list Don Coryell deserves to be higher that is for sure you know he's successful in st. Louis where they really had never had much success before and then he went to San Diego and really gave them their best extended run in their franchise history San Diego was transformed from Southern California mellow to pro football hotbed by head coach Don Coryell the number eight coach on our list is best known for one thing we called it air Coryell Air Koryo Air Koryo the design of that passing game by Coryell was the standard by which teams designed their passing office Coryell's bombs away attacked won five division titles in 14 seasons with the Cardinals and chargers [Applause] the first thing in the air Coryell offense is the bomb it's built into almost every password how about trying to play linebacker against those teams never in my life by seeing a guy that was so intense about what he loves face like a man whose shoes I likened his eyes and the expression to the to the very cardinal on the helmet and is kind of a a beady look look at that at the cardinal logo sometime and look at that eye our number eight coaches intensity paid off in victory I don't think of him as being one of the great coaches of all time in terms of putting it all together outstanding offensive mind and a lot of trouble at the defense Coryell's defenses buckled under playoff pressure surrendering an average of 29 points in nine career playoff game never had a good enough defense to win a championship [Music] [Applause] he has some good defenses and he has some good defensive flavors but if you look at some of the things that happen in the playoffs [Applause] those are great defenses those are at the type of defenses it win Super Bowls Coryell was a savior and something he may be ranked too low on our list I think Don Coryell should be higher because if he was an innovator he has contributed in this case he has made the game better the offense that we won the Super Bowl with in 1999 foundation was all done Torrio Don Coryell should be higher than eight I mean he's doing stuff that that people are still imitating today up next you are now the lamer version of the Buffalo Bills you are the poor man's Marv levy good luck sleeping at night it's soft to lose when you get so close some of the coaches who suffered the worst heartbreak just missed making our list 49ers coach dick Nolan was knocked out of the playoffs three years in a row each time by former mentor Tom Landry Denis green led the Vikings took playoffs eight times with seven different quarterbacks he sells a round of applause only to be haunted by a kick [Music] for the first time in [Music] but the coach who made our list knows all about the worst kind of loss he shouldn't be anywhere in the top ten I will not throw him under the bus I have had quite enough of any reasonable remember what Philadelphia was before he got there I've had it quite enough of his press conferences just um I thought it needed to be done at the time he doesn't come off as the most affable guy numbers to the winningest coach in the history of the Philadelphia the bane of his existence as an NFL head coach has been the NFC title game the back to back to back excruciating three losses for the third year the Eagles breaching the conference championship game and going no further Andy Reid knows how to put a football team together Andy Reid discerns both of the accolades Dukan points the pocket so he hasn't won a championship but would you rather have it where you have a team that doesn't even if the postseason a lot of cities would embrace Andy week Philadelphia is a city that expects nothing less than championship and he's gonna get criticized Andy Reid gets our number seven ranking because he's tied for 11th all-time in playoff wins and his winning percentage is second among active coaches this is one of the great enigmas of the NFL because Andy Reid is a tremendous coach and yet he is public enemy number one year after year he's gotten them to for NFC championship games of the row five and NFC championship games total he has gotten them to the Super Bowl first time in 24 years to the Super Bowl I think he's been a victim of being too close too often there will be no parade I don't care how many times you get close you are now the lamer version of the Buffalo Bills you are the poor man's Marv levy good luck sleeping at night holy Toledo I can barely stand to read criticism rocket Gibraltar read to me is a guy that you know if the Eagles ever listened to half their fan base and accident I mean he wouldn't be unemployed for more than a day made me a hall-of-famer he has an abundant mcnabbs on a hall-of-famer Westbrook's not a lot of famous the one year he had a lot of Famer Owens I got to a Super Bowl Reed will win one eventually give me one Super Bowl win and I think Eagles fans will finally appreciate what they've had for such a long time Chuck Knox never won a Super Bowl but he did win 193 games he was also named coach of the year three times second only to Don Shula well I think he belongs to the Hall of Fame there are coaches in the Hall of Fame that have not won as many games as Chuck Knox plus he took over three losing organizations and turned them into playoffs caliber winning football teams and did they strongly that the Seattle Seahawks exist for one reason that's the wind everywhere he went knocks one and every NFL Films highlight with his new team had the same title Chuck Knox was a really exceptional coach that's where to work getting ready to be the best be the best you got to pay the price butch I grew up a huge fan of the Los Angeles Rams that would win the NFC West Division title every single year under Knox the Rams never missed the playoffs but they never got past the NFC Championship losing the title game three years in a row if ever is whether you were Oh in 16 I want a Super Bowl championship you got to prove yourself each and every year for Knox it was the same Buffalo and Cl [Applause] instant success holds them at failure I think it shock I think of workmen like conservative play it close to the vest and unfortunately that doesn't win big games Wells nickname was ground chuck ground chuck ground chuck because he liked to run the football when you talk about establishing the run that's what Chuck Knox did yeah I worked for him we normally thought in terms of running the ball 3540 times a ballgame and if you didn't do that then you weren't really trying to win in the Chuck rock style in truck had a knack for building rosters he always wanted those veteran guys in the locker of the fill villapiano's the Conrad dolars the hard-bitten guys who were there to instill a certain amount of toughness his style was blue-collar his philosophy spelled out in a series of sayings that became known as Knox isms I have pages and pages of them we're to go to Detroit we're gonna be like hit me I'm gonna make the hit and get the hell out of there don't tell me how rough the water is just bring the ship in faint-hearted never won a fair lady I do not hear what you say I only hear what you do and that's Chuck Knox and when he said that to you let's go out make some tackles two great things about this business one is winning and two is getting paid over his 40-year career our number six coach turned losers into winners but he never captured a championship the commitment is to win without miracle workers you know in my mind Chuck's the best coach I ever played for that he's never been able to win a Super Bowl is true but I don't think was Chuck's fault I think he was a super bowl capable coach for a long time coming up number five on our list he simply had teams that not only lost but lost badly in the biggest games that he ever coached in [Music] before we drive forward with our list let's stop and take another look at the best coaches who never took home a checkered flag and he holds that thing together with gum extinguish number six Chuck Knox at his genes believing in Cinderella story a faint heart never won a fair maiden I hope they don't start referring to me of the Good Fairy never won a championship and reads big divs of the you know the catfish fry yeah put that there's some chick in the Sun for people who don't eat catfish catfish is my favorite fish because we used to ride him on a farm and you cook them you cook them anyway you know crime a brawling or whatever [Music] Daenerys was a wonderful coach because you knew exactly where he stood his principles its background whenever you saw Daenerys you thought about those Dallas Cowboys and the Ice Bowl that was a good thing the bad thing is that you also thought about this was a guy that couldn't win the big one we had four cracks at the Super Bowl the 89 Broncos had no chance against the $40 and the sports show the 98 fountains had no chance against the Broncos in this war shut Debra Broncos and beat the Atlanta Falcons 34 to 19 but the two that I think probably continued a night Dan Reeves when he's laying in bed at night would be the 86 Broncos in 87 Broncos they led both of those two Super Bowls they had a chance to win each game they didn't get it done we led it all year and out of Keene a so much more from a group man that's that's difficult you know too tight but you know there's also a lot of people who would you know just die to have been in one of those I never thought of Dan Reeves as a great head coach I think he's a little high on this list he gave order to a few franchises that needed it it wasn't a great motivator [Music] [Applause] he wasn't very emotional no high excited your cuz I am too Reeves suffered from the Landry syndrome instead of a heart he's got a computer the question is did our number 5 coach have the right hardware to avoid a crash Dan Reeves had John Elway but when you look at those teams they didn't often have a lot else around Johnny he never had the best team going into those Super Bowls who was the running back on those great Broncos who is their great wide receiver you know who are their great tight ends nobody but there is somebody who takes the blame for losing I always felt like that one thing that a head coach is responsible for is to making sure that this football team plays as well as possible and I don't feel like I got my football team to play as well as they could possibly play and that's my responsibilities nobody else hard to get him Reeves did have his share of success and his only one of eight coaches in league history with over 200 wins Hall of Famer why is he not in the Hall of Fame no disrespect to Marv levy he's in the Hall of Fame he lost all the Super Bowls but grant lost all of his Super Bowls Dan's gotten so many more wins anyone coach of the year in three different cities he took what I thought was a very underwhelming Giants team and had them right in the playoffs his first year that's a great coaching mind he's got to find his place in the Hall of Fame he's a great coach not a good coach one of the overlooked things in sports is the fact that Dan Reeves had his heart surgery during 1998 just an incredible story and it was all part of that incredible team [Applause] user coach coming out of the hospital bid to lead them to the Super Bowl Austria face [Music] [Applause] the story ended as expected for a coach on this list I think it would have been very very sweet for him to be able to beat John Elway in a Super Bowl and it's unfortunate for him that he wasn't able to do it I'm sure it made that loss feel even worse like not this guy why this guy again you know at least I'm on the list coming up which coaches training camps weren't cake walks it was a on this station but like I said you no other way to describe it you stand there like a statue some of the NFL's more colorful coaches just missed making our list call me comment on that Robert red Miller led the two Super Bowl 12 Sam Weiss brought the bangles to the brink in Super Bowl 23 [Music] and jerry glanville had something for everyone but the coach who made our list was a character in his own right number 4 coach who never won a championship Marty Schottenheimer I love on the list there's only one coach identified by his first name sort of like share or Charo of the bunch and that's Marty there's a gleam man there's a gleam we all know who we're talking about when we say Marty poor Marty he always seemed to have this cloud over [Applause] to be Marty Schottenheimer is one of the biggest chokers in the history of the National Football League when you look at some of the teams that he has and what they didn't do Jesus over three times he's had a number one seed and lost the divisional round opener twice in Kansas City and again it was San Diego that to me is the mark of a coach that tightens up when the playoffs start in head-coaching stance with the Browns Chiefs Redskins and chargers Marty Schottenheimer amassed two hundred victories time to throw as a Madeleine Withers [Applause] [Music] my son hammers a winning coach we're gonna go one more series I mean we won 100 some games in the 90s that's an average of 10 to 11 games a year ago he never won the championship Lamarr T post seasons were filled with the kind of heartache founded in 80s power ballad bitter loss and broken dreams a 5 and 13 record losing is indigestible the Marty has never run from the fact that he didn't have that success my record and the playoffs is a major disappointment to me the fact that we were in those situations to begin with was because Marty Schottenheimer was our coach it took the bull by the horns and just said I ain't gonna be denied when you look at his football team they could have all run the ball all up and they could all play great defense and if they got any kind of quarterback play at all they were vying for a championship but like ground chuck before him Schottenheimer was conservative to a fault and they called it Marty ball Marty ball and everybody knows what Marty ball is it's Smash Mouth football we're gonna run the ball we're gonna play tough defense we're not going to turn the ball over and we're gonna give ourselves the best opportunity with our field position to win no we're gonna just mash every time in those big games you just knew he would play not to lose and he always lost right or wrong Marty's big game failure was his eventual undoing everywhere he went he remains the coach with the most wins since 1966 that never got to a Super Bowl I guess what was Marty's fault that Marty fumbled the football on one-yard line did Marty allow a 98-yard drive against his defense in San Diego when his guy intercepted the football against Tom Brady came over and then the guy came up from behind and knocked the ball out of his hands and they lose the fumble and you lose the game was that Marty Schottenheimer being a poor coach that's a change of possession first down Patriots it's almost ridiculous when you stop and think about it especially since this coach forewarned that exact scenario before the game make sure now when you get the interception at the end of the game that wins it you just go down on the ground and the hell with all that right it's taken Browns fans 20 years to realize that Marty Schottenheimer how do I believe wasn't that bad of a football coach the years passed and somebody says we gotta get Marty back here because we getting it back of the playoffs again we were always new playoffs with Marty I want you to kill him with kindness and dignity I'll take Marty Schottenheimer in a regular season you give me Parcells or Belichick and the playoffs and I'll show you a dynasty for 10-15 years even today you had a football team I would consider strongly hiring Marty Schottenheimer to run I am what I am I'm a football coach the number three coach who never won a championship George Allen for him winning was obsessive every time you lose you die a little bit you died inside unfortunately not all of your organs maybe just your liver the approach to each contest with enormous energy George Allen owns the third best winning percentage in league history and never had a losing season but in 12 seasons with the Rams and Redskins our number three coach won just two playoff games made too many mistakes to win but I know damn well that we're gonna have a championship football team next year he was a great innovator in terms of how to evaluate film we didn't bother to give out Christmas cards we use that money to buy projectors more projectors to study the Dallas Cowboys he created the dime defense the nickel defense the first guy to hire a special teams coach one of the things he was a genius at was fostering team unity everything we did from the moment I met him was something about football if the guys wouldn't talk football off the field and on the bus and on a plane rather than just making a lot of nonsense you'd hear incoming and if you were a player he said you know he's gonna start talking about the trap block or the Blitz or something he'll find out did a group of winners will do that I had a piece of roast beef and he had his little vegetables and stuff and I started to take a bite of the roast beef he says you know that roast beef is a loser all the winners just out there live they're walking around eating hay be as elusive as much as he hated losing the number three coach on our list apparently held equal disdain for youth it's like they had an alert and allergic reaction to the draft help with the track but I don't want anyone gaining their experience at my expense he never had a number one draft picking all the time he was in Washington and usually wasn't drafted before the fifth round we're gonna have an all veteran team there would be no rookies play regular force and that's the way it should be they played above their level beyond their years because he gave them that opportunity there's a guy he's in that tool was he 34 one of the youngest guys in the team during his Hall of Fame we're Allen's at home plenty of accolades among other things she used to take stuff out of the hotels he would steal towels sheets blankets pillows one time he took a lamp but he was never able to take a victory lap at the Super Bowl [Music] he lost what did I tell you it's amazing that George Allen somehow didn't have a team good enough to win a championship perhaps his veteran teams were his Achilles heel they got some injuries they got too old and it didn't happen if you look at it and they broader picture it's what got him there and is the old saying goes you dance with one that brought you up next number two is the resilient man behind this voice fight on my man Sir Andrew said a little I'm hurt but not get Slams I'll just lie down and bleed a while then I'll rise and fight again plenty of coaches failed to win championships because they ran into a dynasty in the early 60s Alan Schurman led the Giants to three straight NFL championship games but couldn't beat Lombardi's Packers bum Phillip spoilers made it to the AFC Championship in 1978 and 79 but let it slip away both times to the team of the 70s we played behind her we got but it was another coach whose team couldn't beat a dynasty that made our list number two coach who never won a championship Marv levy a gun nothing but respect for Marv levy strong praise from Don Shula the NFL's winningest coach in fact Shula had a winning record against every coach he faced except Marv levy levy nominated Shula by a 17-6 margin wonderful team in Buffalo lord knows they had the Miami Dolphins number our kind of day great day for football levy turned around Kansas City before things fell apart his Chiefs never made it to the playoffs and levy moved on to become head coach of the sad-sack bills finding Buffalo to be a perfect fit where else would you rather be is the perfect thing that's a mantra can't find anyone [Applause] the bills and their Kate gun offense made plenty of headlines too except the one that truly matter they weren't good enough to win those super boss yeah why right okay the first one they go to one [Music] [Applause] and how's that Mart levees fault that doesn't make him any less of a coach the giant game I cannot give a pass on they were the better team he lost the game so that's why I have problems with morph if there's a key it is the resiliency of this team in the three following years the bills were back same team same results once you find something that works why work any harder just use the same crap Cowboys were the better team both times they beat the bills the Redskins were the better team when they beat the bills terrible disappointment for the bills the wheels came off completely disaster some stone wood summers gonna lose why do we serve I think it's the players fault we had some great players but there was always a weak spot led will be remembered for his for Super Bowl losses which is a little bit unfair for Super Bowl losses are unfortunate they are not because Marv levy was a bad coach anybody ever think how hard it is yet to four Super Bowls in a row tough to get there yeah I'll tell you one way to never lose a Super Bowl game don't get to it to do that four straight times is remarkable it's definitely one of the greatest coaching feats of all time that's not just hot air Marv Levy won 143 games in a Hall of Fame career I'll make excuses till the cows come home because I think his brilliant coach who knows what his legacy would have been if Scott Norwood makes the field goal that could be the best coaching job over a four-year period we've ever seen more babies brothers but the best or said it's never won a championship coming up [Applause] before we keep making our list let's check it twice to find out which coaches have been naughty or nice gym or one despite not always having the horses down by having a poetry Don Coryell never got to call himself a champion you're too late you know we drank the wine with the crab number seven the Eagles made five trips to the NFC Championship because Andy read master chemistry and Anatomy your hearts as big as my waist number six stuff knives coached by a golden rule number by Dan Reeves coach did four Super Bowls but never cracked a smile number four Barty fought his teens out of channel their passion for junk was right in his crotch and keep leaning that way number three George Allen clashed with the pinko press we were all just a bunch of raggedy-ass Communists out there trying to make trouble for your hurting the fans in Washington you're hurting the football team number two Marcie here four straight trips to the Super Bowl and now the number one coach who never won a championship Bud Grant bud gray greatest greatest coach you never want to sing oh you can say that bud grant could be that guy yeah he went to what four Super Bowls it was like the team that Bud Grant coached from September to December just didn't bother to show up Wow could be in our case the other teams better but you know when you get to the Super Bowl it's a crapshoot you know you're good enough to be there but you don't know how the ball is going to bounce and he was just a victim of not had right bounce [Applause] [Music] it never was the sense that when it got to the Super Bowl this team elevated its game but he got outcoached hit every Super Bowl he was in and that's difficult to do when you go four times in about eight years two messiahs came from Canada 1967 one was new head coach bud grant grant earned number one ranking by instilling discipline to a Minnesota team that had done he had a lot of different rules things that we weren't we weren't accustomed to there was a thing called Bud's way you know and you put up with it it was a discipline team even at the national anthem he had them standing at attention we practiced that just like we practiced to play and we thought this was bands gasps nice but there was method to his madness the method was consistency amidst the mayhem of the NFL grants Vikings won 12 Division titles in his 17 years as head coach [Music] when you think the 1970s you have to talk about the Minnesota Vikings he looked at the talent that he had and he built a team around the talent that he had three times under grant the Vikings defense was ranked number one it was it was a defense it was based on a certain philosophy he believed that mental errors will get you beat quicker than physical errors mistake pop culture we had to say nothing cheap nothing deep nobodies will score a touchdown on us we're not giving up anything you know in Bud Grant was he was Tom Landry without the fedora head coach bud grain known to the sporting world it's the great stone face I think too much was made of his stoic behavior on the sidelines chewing the gum and really not doing anything except chewing gum on the sidelines I could tell you what it was in reality but the thing the bud that he treated us as men he never yelled he never screamed he never berated I learned more from him than any human being that I've ever been around but for all grant success his legacy is haunted by his Superbowl failures all right I think Marv levy is probably the best coaster that's never won a championship there might be one in one a with him and Marv levy because they both got to four so that concludes our countdown what have we learned I just think it's you know just being in the wrong place at the wrong time yes sometimes luck plays a role but other times all the good karma in the world won't make a difference the simplest answer is the truest is he didn't have the better team any of those days but Super Bowl or no Super Bowl our list contains some of the greatest head coaches in NFL history tonight on NFL Total Access big-money
