well good evening dear family sisters and brothers in christ we gather to celebrate this feast of the martyrs cornelius and cyprian here at saint andrews cathedral downtown victoria the father the son and the holy spirit peace be with you to prepare now to celebrate the mysteries of god's infinite mercy and love we call to mind our need for the healing of the lord lord jesus you reconcile all things to your father lord have mercy lord jesus you create great love from sin lord christ have mercy lord jesus you are healer and giver of new life lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray o god who gave saints cornelius and cyprian to your people as diligent shepherds and valiant martyrs grant that through their intercession we may be strengthened in faith and constancy and spend ourselves without reserve for the unity of the church through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the first letter of paul to timothy my child let no one despise your youth but set believers an example in speech and conduct in love in faith in purity until i arrive give attention to the public reading of scripture to exhorting to teaching do not neglect the gift that is in you which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders but these things put these things into practice devote yourselves to them so that all may see your progress pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching continue in these things for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers the word of the lord the works of the lord's hands are faithful and just all his precepts are trustworthy they are established forever and ever to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness how great are the works of the lord the lord sent redemption to his people he has commanded his covenant forever holy and awesome is his name how great are the works of the lord the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom all those who practice it have a good understanding his praise endures forever how great are the works of the lord the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke one of the pharisees asked jesus to eat with him and he went into the pharisees house and took his place at the table and a woman in the city who was a sinner having learned that he was eating in the pharisees house brought an alabaster jar of ointment she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment now when the pharisee who had invited jesus saw it he said to himself if this man were a prophet he would have known who and what kind of woman this was who is touching him that she is a sinner jesus spoke up and said simon i have something to say to you teacher he replied speak a certain creditor had two debtors one owed 500 denarii and the other 50. when they could not pay he cancelled the debts for both of them now which of them will love him more simon answered i suppose the one for whom he canceled the greater debt and jesus said to him you have judged rightly then turning toward the woman he said to simon do you see this woman i entered your house you gave me no water for my feet but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair you gave me no kiss but from the time i came in she has not stopped kissing my feet you did not anoint my head with oil but she has anointed my feet with ointment therefore i tell you her sins which were many have been forgiven hence she has shown great love but the one to whom little is forgiven loves little then jesus said to her your sins are forgiven but those who were at table with him began to say among themselves who is this who even forgives sins and jesus said to the woman your faith has saved you go in peace the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ well my dear family sisters and brothers in christ i want to just leave a brief word of this most touching and most beautiful gospel story and to [Music] try and help us understand the enormity and the depth of god's merciful love and forgiving gaze upon us and upon the world and herein we see this experience jesus frames it as love not as penance jesus frames this as an example of love because much has been forgiven and that we might stand back and say to ourselves but they weren't in the lineup at the confessional oh my how did they experience this forgiveness where did it happen how did it happen we don't know the answers to any of those questions but we do know the outcome of merciful forgiveness it was overwhelming very real outpouring of love of the lord that's what we know we don't know the names of her sins we don't know we know there are many the lord says they were many you see this woman her many sins have been forgiven because she shows so great a love and i think that that has been over the many years in some ways my own experience and and with people who who are truly i have have sinned gravely and and greatly and and most atrociously and yet the encounter my experience is the encounter with these folks is people that contain within themselves an enormous love a profound love real outpouring of tangible love we could say that that little saying don't judge a book by its covers apropos for this story today the pharisee thinks he knows this person but obviously does not know the heart it is only god who knows the heart only god who can forgive only god who judges only god who invites us to the abundance of love because we are loved first by the lord so i leave it with you that this gospel story and this little parable today are are just at the very heart of what it is to be a christian what it is to be church this is this is what it's all about this is what jesus has come for to bring the father's forgiveness in abundance and you can always tell when it's happened and happening by the explosion of love the explosion of love so let us pray we pray lord that the whole people of god may come to this great grace of revealing the explosion of god's love merciful gaze of jesus we pray to the lord we pray for peace in our world the many places that are troubled with violence and war we pray to the lord we pray lord for those who are suffering and sick from the pandemic who are in need of great healing we pray to the lord and we pray lord that you will transform the face of the earth to the true garden your father has created we pray to the lord god of infinite mercy and love we are your children confident that you will hear and grant our prayers through jesus christ the lord blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have this bread to offer which earth has given in human hands have made it will become for us the bread of life by the mingling of this water and wine we come to share in the divinity of christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have this wine to offer fruit to the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink blessed be god forever lord wash away my iniquity cleanse me from my sins pray sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church receive we pray o lord the offerings of your people in honor of the passion of your holy martyrs saints cornelius and cyprian and may the gifts that gave them courage under persecution make us too steadfast in all trials through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for the blood of your blessed martyrs cornelius and cyprian poured out like christ to glorify your name shows forth your marvelous works by which in our weakness you perfect your power and on the feeble bestow strength to bear you witness through christ our lord and so with the powers of heaven we worship you constantly on earth and before your majesty without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you therefore almighty father we bless through jesus christ your son who comes in your name he himself is the word that brings salvation the hand you extend to sinners the way by which your peace is offered to us when we ourselves had turned away from you on account of our sins you brought us back to be reconciled oh lord so that converted at last to you we might love one another through your son whom for our sake you handed over to death and now celebrating the reconciliation christ has brought us we entreat you sanctify these gifts by the outpouring of your spirit that they may become the body and blood of your son whose comm whose command we fulfill when we celebrate these mysteries for when about to give his life to set us free as he reclined at supper he himself took bread into his hands and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way on that same evening he took the chalice of blessing in his hands confessing your mercy and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again celebrating therefore the memorial of the death and resurrection of your son who left us this pledge of his love we offer you what you have bestowed on us the sacrifice of perfect reconciliation holy father we humbly beseech you to accept us also together with your son and in this saving banquet graciously to endow us with his very spirit who takes away everything that estranges us from one another may he make your church a sign of unity and an instrument of your peace among all people and may he keep us in communion with francis our pope myself your unworthy servant and all the bishops and your entire people just as you have gathered us now at the table of your son so also bring us together with the glorious virgin mary mother of god with your blessed apostles saint cornelius and cyprian and all the saints with our brothers and sisters and those of every race and tongue who have died in your friendship bring us to share with them the unending banquet of unity in a new heaven and a new earth where the fullness of your peace will shine forth in christ jesus our lord through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always and let us offer one another a sign of peace if there is someone nearby with us and if we are by ourselves may our peace go out to all those who need and want the healing and mercy of jesus lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed let us pray oh god who gave saints cornelius through these mysteries which we have received we humbly beseech you o lord that by the example of the martyrs cornelius and cyprian we may be strengthened with the fortitude of your spirit to bear witness to the truth of the gospel through christ our lord the lord be with you and may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit go in the peace and the love of christ thanks be to god well thank you all so much for gathering and
