what is up guys welcome back to the four tip Makey loo Channel um today is just a friendly reminder just like anything else in the world you know medical anything like that with your car it's always best to get a second opinion uh so today I have a 2018 Ford Explorer in here just over 100,00 miles on it and what happened is the customer started hearing some noises up front and he said I got it I can handle suspension work stuff like that I'll go in there and anything that's even loose just a little bit I'm going to go ahead and change out myself he said so he went ahead he started changing stuff out on there he changed I mean everything struts it looks like uh some CV shafts um lower control arms complete um stabling uh all kinds of stuff like that just about everything in the suspension in the front of the vehicle I figured everything that has a little bit of play to it has 100,000 miles or so it's a weird item let's just change it all the problem was as he went along he's changing this stuff himself um he noticed it was kind of getting worse I mean as he changed more stuff it was getting worse which usually means you left something loose you put on inferior parts and yes a lot of the parts on here if not all of them are aftermarket I do not trust aftermarket not one bit we do not install aftermarket at this shop uh just for that reason there's too many issues with them over the years past 20 years of dealing with that so he brought to another a shop finally he said I can't figure it out I'm bringing it to a shop a regular professional shop right he brings it to a guy he says yeah everything's new under here can't be that it must be the steering rack on here the steering gear you need a steering steering gear but I don't uh program Ford steering gear so go to the dealer and get it done guy say you know what I know I know about this guy uh you know Fort to Bey loo out in uh uh Yorkville Illinois BSG automotive and he said I'm going finally go to him and get a second opinion very smart guy uh he brings it here and I look underneath there and sure enough everything is like new underneath there and you would think everything would be fine steering gear though from the steering angle sensor on out has no issues in my opinion at all now mind you a steering gear from my shop a new steering gear you have uh I replace both Outer tie rod ends alignment uh labor is around $2800 I don't know about you but I don't have $2,800 just sitting around to blow on something that doesn't need to be there to be changed out so short part of it is is that in in reality it was just a loose piece that the guy actually installed himself on there so basically you tighten nut up on there change the link out whatever it is uh that's faulty and you're back on the road for the cost of the link or cost of tightening up the bolt that's all there is to it no rack is needed and nothing crazy and the guy just saved $2,800 it was that quick by just bringing it to another shop to get a second opinion now I have a bunch of other stories that you guys are just going to love but I'm not going to ramble on right now we'll do that at the end of the video I want to do is want to take you for a ride real quick and then we'll go underneath the vehicle I'll show you how I found it uh within the mess of new parts that are underneath there uh a lot of people go in there and they start thinking everything's new it's got to be okay and they kind of bypass it and they look for stuff that hasn't been changed and that's where they get into trouble so let's go for a ride and we'll let you hear how it sounds it sounds like the front end's coming apart it's pretty bad all right guys let's go for a drive so you you can see here we're driving nice smooth New Road steering feels great uh there's no looseness the the actual feel of the steering is great you know as far as power assist this is a newer Road also about a year old so we're not getting any noise on these kinds of roads once you go into situations like this returning into a parking lot or something like that and you're turning you might hear a noise like this w so it's that kind of noise where it's a loud clunky noise up front sounds like metal on metal listen and I'm really Hearing in the passenger side a little bit on this side you hear that I mean it's pretty bad that and it's happening more when you're turning into something or turning into a spot or a parking lot and that's why I think it has something to do with the steering especially since all the suspension components are new now what a lot of people don't realize is that when you're driving straight and especially on turns your stabilizer bar end links they're moving and twisting in the socket on there so if they're dry they'll make a squeak noise on turns and then if they're loose the the metal ball instead instead the nylon socket um it'll make noises on turns because you're loading unloading the suspension so a lot of times you know it's it's confused a a a failed stab link with um a steering component because they happen on turns so that's why they're going after it and they're thinking everything else is brand new it's very obvious it's a steering gear right I mean and it sounds worse than normal because in this case the nut is loose on the stabilizer bar end link which means it's metal on metal metal stud going through a metal bracket in the strut whereas A Worn stab link would be a metal ball inside a nylon socket that is worn and making a clunky noise whereas this is like metal on metal so as you can imagine for the customer he's changing all stuff out on there and he's kind of desperate at this point cuz it sounds pretty bad up front sounds you know pretty dangerous and he wants it taken care of especially if the another shop is telling him the steering gears making all that crazy noise uh that's a real cause for concern you lose control of your steering you're done for um and so it's probably the other guy in the other side of the road too so you can understand his cause for concern um so back go back to the shop and I'll show you what I did once it was up in the air um to actually find where it was loose or where the noise was coming from let's go back to the shop okay we're back at the shop now I had the vehicle up on the lift now it's time to inspect it see where that noise is coming from so for any kind of steering concern the very first thing you do after you Jack the vehicle up on both sides is you want to go ahead and grab the tire at the 3 and the 9:00 position and you're going to try to move it back and forth like that what we're doing is checking for any kind of looseness in there any kind of clunking noises uh anything like that and you shouldn't be able to move it just like this I cannot move this at all solid going over to the dryer side same exact thing same exact test can't do it at all PL the spin everything sounds good so the very next thing I want to look at because I can already tell by experience in my ears and driving that it's a suspension concern uh that may happen more on turns I'm going right for suspension components so we're looking at it on here you can see the stab link is new aftermarket the outer tie rod end is um original Ford original Ford lower Armon here maybe new struts new CV shaft now when you're pulling all this stuff apart like a CV shaft you're pulling all these bolts up here so you got to remember that you're not just changing a CV shaft or this you're pulling the whole front knuckle and everything apart to change these components so we're pulling a lot of the front end apart so you want to check to make sure everything's nice and tight so looking at this side over here on the passenger side new lower arm looks like a new CV shaft down here uh this is an aftermarket outter tie rod end maybe new struts stuff like that so again a lot of us apart and changed multiple times so what I do to check a situ check for a noise in a situation like this is I bust out the pry bar you want to bust out a decent Siz pry bar and get in there and start moving these components here's a perfect example why so if you're in here looking at stuff and you're grabbing a lower control arm you're checking the joint right here right so you're pull up down up down and I weigh 220 lbs I mean I can move some stuff and it's not moving for me at all same thing right here checking the socket on there nothing uh we'll check bolt torque on over here of course stuff like that uh then we're looking at the sa Ling it sounds like it's stabl links so again if I grab it I mean I Cann get any noise out of it reason being is these vehicles are heavy pigs so this this uh stabilizer bar is real thick on here it's beefy so you're not going to be able to move it by hand but if you get a pry bar in gently pry in the right spots you can find weaknesses so we'll go ahead and we'll do the same thing here a little pry action maybe down here at the lower ball joint but I'm concentrating on this right here because that's where I'm hearing the noise so again we'll go up with it try to do that didn't really get anything and then I like to go down with it also cuz it's under tension already and if you look at it and you look at the upper nut on there it's moving quite a bit it's obviously loose within the bracket and I really couldn't do that by hand just my weight so I heard a lot of noise over here it's very obvious it's passing your side but I'm also hearing it on the driver's side now before you go batty wamp this crazy remember this is metal on metal and it's transferring through here yeah there's a nylon socket in here but it's transferring through here to this other side so I'm hearing it over here also and of course you want to check everything that was done and touched on here um but there's no guarantees that it's actually failed over here also see I'm not getting no movement out of that in the bracket so it's just transfer nois is transferring over so that right there the upper nut on there which the nut comes with the new stab link is all that we need to do is is tighten that down to spec and then go for a drive it all this is going to be fixed no steering gear is required now of course I'm not going to be you know I'm not going to turn a blind eye to it I'm going to go ahead and check everything he did all these bolts and fasteners everything he might have touched in here I'm checking it all and then of course taking care of that there and we'll go for another test drive all right we have everything all tightened up down below let's go for another drive and see if this was a cheap inexpensive fix for the guy after Chasing it forever there was uh the lower ball joint nut on the passenger side that new one uh was a little loose and then of course the uh stab link nuts were Beyond loose so again we're not going to hear anything here let's go in here and actually test it out again each time I drive like this I'm checking the steering oh my God smells seems like a brand new vehicle I mean I am not hearing anything nothing that was pretty pretty good test that one let's go over this one the sewer right here perfectly silent all right guys so in the end all we did was tighten up everything in the front end down there and then for the stab Lings we went ahead and pull the nuts off of there cleaned the threads of all the grease on them put some Loctite on there and they put on some new Ford nylon self-locking nuts on there tightened everything to spec went down the road and as you heard everything sounds like brand new under the hood there under the vehicle um and that's all it took so perfect example of why you want to get a second opinion before you just throw money at it especially when it's a large sum of money like that three four grand two three grand uh you know it it it can get expensive real quick and frustrating especially if it doesn't fix it and then you're going to another shop anyways um so as for the stories I want to tell you about some stories of some stuff that has come through the shop here that will kind of blow your mind uh so I had one guy come through was an old guy right 07 F-150 I think was Rusty as can be underneath there and it's a 543 valve he brought into a four dealership cuz they had like a a tapping knocking noise it sounded just like a rod knock noise right and they said hey you need an engine guy the 543 valves they all need engines any anyways you got a rod knock you definitely need an engine right and he got frustrated and he brought it down to me for a second opinion very smart smart old guy and it took me all of about five minutes to diagnose it and find out that his Catalyst bed in the driver side C converter the big chunks were kind of jumping around and rattling around in there especially upon cold startup when all that flows going through their higher RPMs they were just jumping around in there and it sounded even to me just like a rod KN but I know the 543 valve is not known for Rod KN concerns the base engines are very reliable uh so I knew to look further and we tapped the cat converted with the soft face Mallet and guess what big chunks floating around in there and we confirmed it it's all he needed was a KLA converter now I could have easily or any other shop could have said hey yeah you need an engine and gotten all the money for the labor and the the upcharge on the part for the engine and then said oh afterwards said oh you know your engine was so bad that it took got the cat converter when it was misfiring so bad and you need a cat converter now and cover my butt and the guy would have known never known the wiser and he' been down the road and $1,000 nowadays later he had been out all that money for something where he just needed a cat converter uh so I saved him on that one and then you guys know that $5,600 tail lamp issue my very last video the big one well that guy before he came for the tail lamp issue he came for a worrying noise noise up front the drivetrain right and he was just to a Ford dealer and they said hey it's your front axle bearings you know you need to either get a junkyard unit or we re rebuil all the bearings in there it's either going to be $3,500 or $4,500 which one do you want choose one he said I don't know about that so he contacted me I said ah you know the front axles don't spin they're fully disconnected at the wheels and the transfer case why would it be worn out that quick mind you it's a 2018 F-150 95,000 miles on differential doesn't spin how is the bearings worn out on there so he brought it to me and sure enough it was a left front hob and bearing not a front axle so it was what 250 plus labor probably like 550 out the door instead of $3,500 to $4,000 just by bringing it to me and get a second opinion on there and then there was another guy and this is the worst one I've ever seen I ever ever come across right it's a guy from Chicago and they thought he was an idiot or something I don't know um but he brought it in for like a' 05 F-150 and he said have a low power concern barely get down the road so they said hey your engine's worn out you need a remanufactured engine they they put in a reman engine and then they said you know it's it's better but the concern's still there and it's just kind of like it's it's getting higher RPMs and your trans isn't shifting your trans is uh you know whatever they told about the trans you know the trans the engine took the trans out or whatever they said but they sold my trans too so now he has a remman engine and a remman trans in there for this low power concern where it just basically revs to the high RPMs and then it doesn't really shift that well and everything like that right so they put an engine in a trans and they're fleece them for how much I don't know and it still wasn't fixed zero difference at all he brings it down here all the way from Chicago brings it out here drops it says check it out please I'm getting taken left and right from all these places I trust you bring it in guess what because I've experienced with it again um I figured out in about 5 to 10 minutes that he simply has plugged catalytic converters that's it so if you didn't know it already plug Catal converters will cause an issue where it seems like you either have a low fuel pressure issue or you have an issue with transmission shifting or a low power issue from the engine in general and so all that guy needed was some some cat converters and he been down the road happiest can be trucking down the road but they sold my engine and a trans I really felt bad for that guy um so yeah there's a couple different stories of of uh people out there that were you know they came too late for second opinion or they said whoa whoa whoa whoa and they stepped back and said I'm getting a second opinion see you guys and they brought it down here and and they got it diagnosed properly now I'm not saying I know everything I definitely don't know everything I'm not right every time guaranteed I'm never going to say that um but just like anything else you don't trust that something feels hanky here you bring it to another shop to get diagnosis yeah they say the same thing then great you got to Pony up the money and get it fixed two shops said the same thing um but in general for stuff that's more you know uh detailed like that the diagnosis a little harder to diagnose let's just say um you want to get a second opinion especially if the bill they're trying to throw at you is a three four five grand you really want to get a second opinion on there that's all for now I just want to illustrate a few different examples of why you should always get a second opinion when it comes to Automotive repairs especially large ones uh that's all for now though I'll see you guys next time
