[Music] hi guys I'm Shmi and today is a very exciting day because I'm going to be going out for a drive in this the McLaren p1 now believe it or not the p1 is actually celebrating its fifth anniversary this epic hybrid hypercar believe it or not is five years old and as such McLaren have invited me to come up today to Scotland where we're going to be enjoying the car on some amazing roads shoot a full in-depth video showing you everything I can about the p1 and take it for a little Drive and experience it properly and what it's all about now I'm a very lucky boy because I've been fortunate enough to drive a couple of P ones before but always in town or on the motorway today we've got countryside roads to experience it properly and it's not just any p1 this is a particularly special one known as p1 oof P 100 V on the number plate its pp 3 one of the prototype vehicles it's been driven across Belgium by Jeremy Clarkson it's been driven around yes marina by Chris Harris it's been driven by Jenson Button at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and I've actually got my own story with it because I have been in the passenger seat of this very very car before for a hot lap at yes marina with Tim Mullen about four years ago now believe it or not and so it's quite nice to have it back in its gorgeous amethyst black it's very dark but it has a little bit of a purple pearlescent tinge to it if you catch the light on it and like I said today I'm going to show you everything I can a full story of the McLaren p1 and this whole story and I'm just spectacularly excited as you can see first let's take a look at the car [Music] [Music] let's rewind back and understand a little bit about where the p1 came from and the new look McLaren Automotive relaunched in 2010 their first car was the mp4-12c the p1 was actually only the second car that the new McLaren automotive company was able to make and to achieve something this great in such a short period of time just two years after delivering their first color is really something quite phenomenal they had a lot of history and legendary cars to live up to in the form of the McLaren f1 and the f1 GTR the road car having come out in 1993 the race car in 95 going to L'Amour driving there and winning the race but the p1 came at a time when we have a whole new era of technology the introduction of hybrid tech and particularly in this case for making the drive more impressive by taut filling the gaps on the petrol motor we'll talk more about that later so a new generation of tech and that's what McLaren want from the ultimate series their flagship cars that they're making so the p1 introduced at the Paris Motor Show exactly five years before this video in September 2012 it launched in production spec at Geneva the following year in March 2013 there have been 375 road cars in total McLaren has 750 letters of interest so they literally half that number and made 375 keeping them in high demand which is why the original 866 thousand pound price tag well that's raised if you want one now you're going to be looking at more like one and a half million and for a prototype like this a very special car even more the name of the p1 came from MacLaren's connection to motorsport p1 in Formula One pole position being at the front of the grid and of course it connects very nicely also to f1 but as we look at the car walk around it at the time it came out it looked like a UFO like a spaceship and it actually still does it's parked in normal mode at the moment it can also sit lower in race mode with the wing up high in the air and I'll show you that later on but even like this just looking around it it's completely futuristic you can see aerodynamics at work everywhere the way it will flow around the car and help give the card downforce it has six hundred kilograms of downforce at 160 miles per hour around the back it's all open for air flow out and you can see you away this wing just sits nestled in there before it raises up to the top you've also got things like the roof scoop over the top that just give it an amazing amazing look if we come down to the rear at the back just look at that diffuser it is a monster down there it's almost like race car for the road now powering it 916 PS 903 brake horsepower that is insane and that comes from the 3.8 litre twin-turbocharged v8 combined with the electric motor back here as well to get that total so the petrol engine is 727 brake horsepower and 720 Newton meters the electric motor makes up the additional 176 brake horsepower and 260 newton-meters to get you all of that total at once 916 PS 980 Newton meters of torque that means naught to 62 miles an hour 100 kilometers an hour is just 2.8 seconds wait for the next numbers though what's of 200 kilometers an hour which is 124 is just 6.8 seconds and nought to 300 case or 186 miles per hour is sixteen point five seconds that is very very very fast and while it looks fast it goes fast and I'm into experimenting an hour it's all rear-wheel drive all the power is delivered to the back and goes down to the ground through the p0 Corsa that was developed with Pirelli for this car it has a Cubano brake switch if I come up towards the front have an almost mirror like finish although they are carbon ceramics for insane stopping power and it's got a 7-speed graziano double clutch gearbox let's also take a look at the inside and the doors are one of the most awesome things the way they open up this huge part that you can see literally straight through with the way the air flows back through here to go in towards the intakes there to cool things down you've got the carbon fiber monocoque that's exceptionally light but also very strong and it just looks raw real and very serious so this mono cage you can see the carbon fiber left exposed here it's just 96 kilos in total it's the whole the whole part so you have the mono cell for the 12c which was just the lower section but for the p1 it's completely reinforced that's why there's no convertible because it's the whole roof the whole car that you can see here in sight everything is Alcantara and carbon-fiber and we'll come back and talk a lot more about the interior shortly but there are many many cool details for example the glass this bit of glass is 2.2 millimeters thick and the bit of glass around the front for the windscreen is 3.2 millimeters thick where a normal windscreen might be four point two millimeters to save three and a half kilos of weight and on the inside all of this exposed carbon fiber is left without lacquering around the dashboard to save one and a half kilos as well and there are just weight savings everywhere you look with this everything is done and thought about and it's obviously all carbon fiber all the panels are made out of carbon fiber and it's this one really quite large rear clamp so to access the engine you go into the factory or the dealer and they remove the whole rear clamp to make access into it you can't see too much if we come up here and just have a peer through the glass but that p1 logo was actually designed by Ron Dennis himself back in in the days when it was being planned out so he penned that down and it's tucked through to the final car the rear wing also has DRS which is a formula 1 technology there are quite a few of those found in the car for example brake steer on the rear wheels to help cornering ability and one thing I really like coming around towards the front is when the headlights were introduced they were a new style but this is the McLaren speed mark logo that you see on the bonnet and the shape of the logo is mimicked precisely by the shape of the headlights and that's just such a cool touch obviously it's the opposite way around on the other side but I always thought that was a very very nice thing and if I just shut the door for a moment which you do by closing it down just a gentle closure there come round towards the back the rear lights here the way they're integrated around that shape just completely futuristic and I want to show you locking the car quickly we'll come around to the front because the cup does such a cool thing when you do this you get the little light show you can see the indicators blinking front and rear all the way around the car when you do that and the mechanical click that you hear he says when he unlocks it there is the relay unlocking all of the systems from the electrical motor rather than using the battery and that's the way it starts as well which is just something a little bit different to normal another thing to note is that the fuel filler cap and the various oils and liquids are all on the roof so the oil is there you can plug it in there as well close that cap come around to the other side and there's your petrol cap on the top which is most unusual but let's just jump in and to jump into the car you have the buttons on the inside just here give that a press it pops the window comes down to release air pressure so that when you close it or open it it doesn't smash the window or glass all the like and everything you're looking at is carbon fiber literally the outside panels that are painted a carbon the inside parts of carbon the bits of the turbo carve and the wheel arch is a carbon it's all carbon or it's finished in Alcantara or leather if that's how you wished customers could specify only a couple of things to do with color choices and alike in here we step in which is a little bit awkward to be completely honest you would expect nothing less from a hypercar well you've got the PP three naming badge the chassis number plaque there so customer cars will have their car number you're greeted by the triple digital displays and I'll come back and show you all around these shortly a little bit further on but everything is very raw completely stripped out it's only got parts that it absolutely needs to have it feels very open with the Gorilla Glass for the roof they're a little bit tinted but I'm aware in hot countries it can get quite warm and then just looking around all the batteries are in the bulkhead back here about 1900 kilos of batteries or so back behind you let's start the car we've got the button here let's bring it in to life quickly [Music] awesome so I'm going to show you a little bit later on more about this how active dynamics panel works the different controls and settings it just feels like a serious special thing your DRS button to flatten the wing to reduce drag drag reduction system your I pass buttons give you full instant electric power it's all right there on the steering wheel is very small you can see it's quite warm this cars done 22,000 miles 22239 you can see their Alcantara but modeled actually the original wheel on Lewis Hamilton's driving position back when he was racing with McLaren you've got the rocker style shifters so you can pull them both ways I'll push them on either side you won't go into gear with the paddles because I still got the door open mirrors and light controls and the like but it just feels really immensely special in here we also drive it a fully mode I'm just talking as I go and well I think I should really take it for a little Drive should night and experience the McLaren p1 on the roads of Scotland let's go here we go in this accelerates a little bit it dials up into a different language becomes we're driving essentially it's just surreal and electric the only noise you have is that electrical UFO like sound going on that very much I think matches the looks drama of the cloud you're looking into it from the outside but if you press that again that dimension comes back on back to the VA the farm power and you can drive it in different modes you can either have it in for always using all the power available so electric or you could have it in just the potential voters but using I pass for the instance of the power when you press the steering wheel then if you're going along for high speed you press the RS of the wing which is having those buttons on the steering wheel is very reminiscent of Formula One technology what the car is I guess inspired by and capable now these words truly love me but let's play around with some of the settings that enable dynamic panel with a press of the button in the sense of their people - so I'm familiar with these equal handling on the Left which adjust your steering suspension setup right on the right which is your gearbox as into sports for their manual patterns this rocker system with an ugly climate panel this is where you start to hear some of that boys [Music] your hands just amazing then when you lift off the waste gates the way they flutter it's the most incredible south Wow that's this big super super gentle and easy within manual you can put it back into us the roads are a little bit wet so greasy so I need to be reasonably sensible feeling herbivory of okay this car is important to achieve because it was amazing the best of a category it just feel like he's ridiculously awesome he was like arrow hood we up slightly and see that rising yeah just out of the back arrow mode is the fastest in a straight line so doing a drag race you know waterfall laying at the full dose of vitamin farm [Applause] down until pens the narrowboat give you a little bit more for it it it's a spaceship thing I don't even know [Applause] [Music] driving it the legend 3p1 this is really been one of my favorite cause it's super twitchy you feel that especially with the intonation of the roads it's very very sensitive I guess that helps you make accurate when you're driving I'm just beaming absolutely beaming and this is wonderful hardcore mode like I said you've got to increase modality return which is even crazier but not illegal to produce because it present analytes solo but they're actually where they need to be by five cents little demonstrate that later on getting used to them the noises it makes the sounds the feeling while the car can do and just be sure it's right to another territory the sentence you start putting it worth now any terrible actress results of that because straightaway just beaming absolutely beaming driving us you hear loads of road noises because of the carbon tarp naturally you've got a small little brief window you can't see too much but you've got an awesome view over the arches out the mirrors which say quite wide outs of the car very centrally accepted here but it's not too uncomfortable with a passenger alongside just back [Applause] you can turn it up one more into the track and track mode where it gets even roar the ESC the traction control goes into sports here dynamic mode is told me I've got the RSO this is where I can see the wing is actually now pivoted forwards only in sports attached if we press TRS I can see them flattening it that is amazing watching that happen expressing their acid in doing is they Wow super super cool I can feel it's firmer or even crazier it's so fun so much pork in any game I mean even it falls game putting your foot down way it goes the mental poisons must be real millions sounds every bit of it howling b12 it's very much discouraged this is the development of the concept in the 3.8 the twin-turbo v8 we now have the for these are the USM 20s at the Super Series this it was a game-changer in the flying big preparin introduce them all even close it says hey look we're here we're ready to show you something it feels like the color is going to bite you and it's gonna buy you very very very loud I'm sure attraction without guy I remember my first outing against freedom I got out of the card I was always speechless because it completely cream made my body active recalibrate as the water super car is capable of fast spectacular it can be that I'm experiencing a little bit of that now as to how these colors it's just a different category - we know typically is Christmas so to me it just keeps delivering and it just justly picks up and launches you away in a way that's just out of this world if I just turn it back to small small it was really about that you want to be in when you're out driving the car on the road is a different display and appearance it's crazy to think this car this car is actually doable the curse system at a time dispersed system moving what it's very much based on thousand Clara basting and terrible motive both based at the same location in Woking Surrey England I mean it's it's it's what it is a proper - I was that burst on summer series - I'm sure you might be the last we have at the pp 23 to be a like a very sweet humming this back down again you're looking around you've got the carbon fiber a switch the motorcades that you're looking straight at you with all of this out Katara everywhere but this car has had nothing fundamentally changed on us other than consumables and the regular side of things that get consumed over time it's just SuperDuper awesome amazing yeah this reason was really favorite cause since Dr Hitz day I'm experiencing so much of why that is it's it's just I know I'm digging like tiles I don't think you can blame me for that given that I'm driving the new one and just put a little bit of dried tail back here this has come to stop for a moment completely empty road press that launch button give you the throttle building the boost oh my gosh we can excite them traction make the problem today power the feeling talk feeling instead of clinging on and I am holding steering wheels super super tight that's coming through my goodness when you take a car like this and amazing environment like where we are now these kind of roads it's just ugly and awesome missus exactly it's all for this kind of experience it's pinch moment this is edit incredible it takes you into that next dimension of speed it's just and biggie that door is this but really as you press the throttle where are you just picks up and takes off guys this goddamn np1 this head of its time it's it's complete I've been trying to get now it's a game-changer five years ago just something totally out there totally crazy follow me they came up and created this almost out of the second car company ever made was this in its present moment with Harold truly incredible I'm just like a giddy child driving this thing and you know all the stopping power is incredibly impressive as well there's a cumulative race with the vacuum owner in Japan for this car they are spectacularly expensive over defeating any set of disks you might turn on those radiant lose price but they do have two G's they'll be cooler which is fairly incredible ever this has been an amazing Drive more of it in with this car [Applause] oh wow oh wow oh wow this thing it's just mega but I want to show you more around the inside so we've parked up here where we can have a look at the displays and some of the buttons and options and the various things around but first thing the seats which are the same seats as my 675lt actually are really really comfortable they're mounted at 28 degrees reclined which means that they're fixed but that's lighter by not having the mechanisms to move the seats fixed you've just slide them forward some backwards fire a lever down at the front but they're very comfortable very supportive nice snug fit but work perfectly then in the center you've got the iris system android-based system this was the first time the Android system was integrated for McLaren it's since gone backwards into the 12c plus pretty much every other model since then it works really well with the portrait display and it controls underneath and this little symbol right here is the satellite view of the McLaren Technology Center the MTC so that's a parent's main HQ and then where the factory is just over here is the McLaren production centre and PC this car was built on us and a built line with 61 engineers working on them to get the 375 cars plus 50 odd p1 GTR as well that floating center consoles it's super nicely with the start/stop button up top the e mode button charged to get faster speed of batteries charging up should you wish then down here your active dynamics panel so disable that light turns off turn it back on you can hear the hydraulic suspension doing its thing setting up and that's why the ride is still quite supple and control that's because of a hydraulic suspension system working so well the launch control button race mode which I'll show you in a moment and then boost if you want to manually control when you're on the battery power down here standard controls electric handbrake hazard warning Heights Drive neutral reverse lock the doors and pop the bonnet maybe I'll show you around at the bonus as well then you've got more little storage space here with a rubber mat at the bottom your USB port you know all the creature comforts you can plug in your iPod and have some music coming out cigarette socket is down there behind two more cupholders but again carbon fiber carbon fiber more carbon fiber warning this is a prototype vehicle which just makes it extra exciting then on the doors the way you release them is this just behind the grab handle but you can start to see the car is slightly used there's a bit of wear on the Alcantara the steering wheel that's part of the character of especially the prototype and especially such a special prototype let's talk a little bit about the display horizontal rev counter across the top so if I turn off active things changed slightly you can see a different Revlimid isn't that you're a very far in neutral static go into active that's the view you get in sports sport if you go to track mode because it's just changed slightly there as well and traction light is on and the like but the horizontal rev counter super-awesome about 20 mm something miles on it now so you've got the left screen which you can control and show more information you've got temperature gauges and the like down the right your electric charge and your fuel levels information down at the bottom warnings things which are on the left and then this stop down here which you would press her and hold up to do the lift system you can also go through the menu now confusingly it actually goes backwards so you press it up to go down at the menu but this is where you've got various bits of information you can manually do the lift system there go into settings change bits and pieces and that's quite nice the way it comes out into the display it actually pushes the speedometer across towards the gear selector you can cycle through everything you might want to usually see in the car do the 4 wheel lifts that puts the whole car up about five or six centimeters at the front I think for the back which makes ground clearance significantly improved and we can take it back to home go back to the main information screen so that all works pretty nicely and just taking a further look around really is so cool well vents position very nicely to keep your hands cool while driving hard I like the drivers fan positioning passenger gets to as well but just these thought pads over the top for the airbag areas most final piece of shred not very much else in here Meridian sound system which I haven't been listening to because I've been focusing on what's going on back here you can't see too much of back through this small cutout snorkel dominates things up on the roof rearview mirror hovers floating mouse on the glass on that very thin front glass which is a nice look as well then I'll say I think I haven't talked about just the lights control here at the mirrors position very much Drive and focus everything is very driver focused and you feel that way passenger has their own nice zone but this whole sense of entertainment and the controls is all about you the driver in here just quickly you have a couple of loose apps you can connect it to your phone to go online and have a little browser and things and I've watched a youtube video or two for us obviously you've got various media controls the nav system which might take a motor load out we're up in Scotland as you can see all works nicely it's everything you would expect from that compress there to go back home into settings to go through your media controls and setting that all works like a normal nice car one thing I'm interested about you press e mode yeah if you from C modem your static now I could start moving forwards where you get that display I mentioned earlier where you have your percentage shot that's weird revving in neutral you can actually rev an electric car that's noise of electric revs guys turn the v8 back on because the other thing I want to show you is race mode so it's do race mode you enable active you can be and I think most of the different settings you've got this race button down here which you will give a double press and hold it on the second and then race mode selected see a little warning that it's track use only press and hold to accept and it starts to do its thing so you can hear that the rear wing is coming up at the back the right height is lowering you can actually see a glimpse of the rear wing there as it raises up [Music] it's a short little process done now the car sits in race mode you have a new view you've got tire temperatures here as a warning and actually you start the car up in race mode you get the most awesome of start sounds as well so are we done yeah there we go now you have your shift lights you can see underneath rev limiter is not there your DRS functionality by time and your I pass as well so that's in race mode but I just turn it off I'll have a look in a moment but just firstly when I start the ignition back up once the power once for ignition in a McLaren active to re-enable there we go and if we just start it up you get the race mode start which is also although it's actually returning back to normal because I didn't press the button so I want to put it back into race mode grace to accept [Music] back to race made me go that would jump out around the exterior okay and so off it goes I've slid my seat back there's the lever under here to do that then the button to release the door now I can tell you from experience stepping out of a McLaren p1 holding a video camera it's not the world's easiest thing to do but I've achieved it with the door up it does look super super space-age now we have the car in race mode so drop the door down and just come and have a look around this and how it looks in this mode with that rear wing 30 centimeters raised up out of the back pivoted to 29 degrees as well like I said you can flatten it with DRS and the entire car is lowered five centimeters 50 millimeters so the tires actually tucking up into the arches you couldn't even squeeze your hands in there and this is on the courses you could put it on the Trofeo our track tires but those wouldn't be the most sensible for road which should have even more aggressive sidewalls but coming around towards the front look at how low the splitter sits it's literally down right towards the ground just tell any amount of space underneath for maximum Drive that's on the racetrack and by the way YP one move well to two potential reasons p1 out of vocabulary the way you feel when you're driving this car or p1 because that's the noise you make when you're experiencing a ride in the McLaren p1 now like this it looks super aggressive aerodynamics are just absolutely crazy but they've even gone one notch further with the p1 GTRs with the 50 of those that attract only up to a thousand horsepower even more bonkers arrow with a ginormous fixed rear wing an even more mental rear diffuser and the same with the splitter at the front I think a 58 of them actually in total and then about 27 of those half of them have also been confirmed converted over to road cars as well and Zante the company that used to work with the f1 f1 GTRs have done those conversions and in addition also there are 6 p1 LM s one prototype five Road car which half a thousand horsepower but later that the GTRs because they take out the pneumatics and even lighter things like seats and new bolts to save even more weight but this was the introduction of MacLaren's ultimate series this is where that side of things began it is a very very spectacular car a very significant car particularly this exact one looking awesome here in this environment it's just so so cool and McLaren want the ultimate series to be cars that a game-changing that have such a defined capability or introduce new technologies so for example the next replacement to this can only come in the future when there is a step change in the technologies that can go into these cars there will be more ultimate series products like the BP 23 that we know about although not by the final name yet but this this has been something I guess monumentally special and exciting drive and you just look around it and it's it's incredible as a piece of engineering and how it changed this game I could just Google around this forever look around here the carbon-fiber all underneath wherever you look and actually I haven't opened the bonnet yet he is carrying inside the car but there's another way to open the bonnet with the button there right then come back around towards the front the way you do it in here where you've got the radiators inside those Jade enormous scoops is there's a button which you put your hand through and then you lift it up and you've got just enough space for two helmets or an overnight bag and a briefcase yeah enough luggage space to go on a road trip usual water and once we wash our fluid fillers in there but it's all carbon everything is carbon look at this lovely lovely lovely lovely finish place that back down drops into place well I have definitely been moved today P one move has done its thing I hope you've enjoyed this very very full look around this very special car and you know as well as P one move the other prototype car was P 100 you and there is actually a new P 100 you that McLaren have built because this car is going to be retired to the boulevard MTC to be stored looked after for the future because of how special it is the new one with iou is in the launch volcano yellow special original launch color and that is going to be the one that's used for testing in the future future products future development to prototyping the only thing we haven't been able to see today is with the lack of sunshine the color maybe if I just turn a little torch on and come in close we can try and catch a glimpse of the purple it's not really wanting to come out on us today unfortunately but this is a very very special color when you get to see it in that light anyway big thanks from me to McLaren because this has been an amazing amazing opportunity to drive this car an awful lot of fun and to drive it properly in an interesting environment as well so I hope you've enjoyed the video I hope you've learned something a little bit new some new information about MacLaren's legendary p1 this car is going to be significant for all the time in terms of what it's done in this world but I want to wrap this one up for there thanks again to McLaren thanks to you guys as always for watching make sure you are subscribed for plenty more videos to come and I'll catch up with you again very very soon Cheers you
