this is the McLaren 720s Spyder and it's just like a toy no seriously look it's exactly like a toy well apart from the price say the full-size car will cost you two hundred and thirty seven thousand Google car Wow simple let's not this review by talking about the design because with the roof up it does look very similar to the coupe a and it's got all the same Aero swooshes and inlets as well and I'll illustrate the know with e-commerce stick of true so every bit of arrow vent does actually serve a purpose there's no fakery here it's all there to do a job even back here down here all the way to the rear there is no need for the car my stick of truth today at all now one of the differences between this car and the coupe is how the doors are mounted you're still open them in the same cool white just by pressing on the panel in here but they're hinged just down there whereas the ones on the coupe a are also hinged towards the roof obviously they can't be on this car because the roof panel does come out so moving into the car you still have soft clothes so if I just shut the door and if you do it gently and then it automatically closes for you also if I pull up on this stalk because I've got the electric steering column and I've got the memory seats it'll move me to my favorite position and it is a great driving position in this car just bang on also like the fact then the dash is really low so you get a great view forward as well it's really really nice I love the interior design of this car as well the way you've got these swoops and cutaways in the dash and it's covered in leather you can I mean outcome turrets it's entirely up to also the vents not the way they operate so that's them shut that's the mopin this is a vent here as well which you can open or closed just by pushing or pulling it which is cool and the general layout of stuff is just dead easy it's all angled towards the drive ever so slightly and these are the controls for the different driving modes you can flip through then you have the infotainment screen here which is like a portrait tablet don't think it's the best system in the world but it is alright one thing it doesn't have though is apple carplay nor Android auto which is a shame but the system is fairly easy to use so you can press up and to go to the home screen then you can just use the touchscreen to go through your different functions all very simple all very logical shortcut to the satellite navigation and it's an all right Navi system it's not the most responsive of the map but it does the job well enough really I also like the way that the buttons are just neatly laid out here for your drive selector there so you have a drive neutral reverse you got your launch control button there more on that later you've got the controls for the roof there as well once again more on that later the controls are open the door just feel really expensive made out of metal and so the window switch edges as well all very lovely all very very high-quality even the switches down here for the lights open the front to change the view of the screen so you can actually move it into a more minimal view here like that if you want to there it's like something out a Batman that I'll just love it you're actually better off having it most of the time in the wider view because then you can actually just flick through quite easily all the different options I also love the seats they're super comfy or there they're quite fun there are a few things that aren't so great though for instance look at this this will view mirror I mean it's horrendous it's cheap plasticky and like something out of budget car like a Dacia not so that it cost as much as this that is a real disappointing one it just fit a nice posh frameless rear-view mirror like you're getting so many other cars these days another thing I'm not so keen on is the fact there's no glovebox when the feel of box that's annoying isn't it other than that storage isn't too bad so look you've got some storage under here look it's handy and you've got some charging ports for your mobile devices there's also look a little place for the key Elias just here so you've got the key holder so you don't lose obviously you got keyless go there's a cup holder there which is just about beginner for my pria spider drinks container there's a space there which is ideal for keeping your mobile phone out of the way and another little cup holder there there you can't really fit a very big bottle in that and then there's a 12 volt socket there if you need to charge another mobile device there's also some door pockets here as well just in the door surprisingly enough and you've got a little bit of extra storage just here a nice little net but if you need more space there is of course the boot at the front also known as the rung and it's actually a reasonable size when I say reasonable size it's it is for this kind of car so it's ever so slightly larger than the front you get on a Ferrari 488 pista so yeah we've got our filming gear in there a little bit of room it's not too bad at all and like they say you can see what's going on and a 12 volt socket if you want to fit some kind of like their drinks cooler in there but being the Spyder you get a little bit of extra space just underneath the tonneau cover so if you've got the roof up you can then do this look raise this part up and there's a tad more space just under here look it's just enough room for the cars spec sheet we're gonna run you through the standard specification on this car it's pretty decent but you can easily mount up the cost by fitting a load of options for instance this silver supernova paint that's four thousand three hundred and thirty pounds lightweight forged alloy wheels three thousand 170 pounds if you want your brake calipers painted red that's one thousand one hundred and forty pounds may seem steeper you also get the McLaren logo etched onto the middle caliber growth and it just being a sticker thanks it is stainless steel sports exhaust that'll be four thousand nine hundred pounds if you won the grass roof to have an electrochromatic effect so you can go darker at the touch of a button actually block out 99.9% of all UV a light that will cost you seven thousand five hundred package a three thousand five hundred eighty pounds you can get track telemetry with onboard camera so there's a camera there and it's also on at the front and it will record your laps for four thousand seven hundred twenty pounds you can get 360 degree cameras for three thousand six hundred and forty pounds you can have the lovely look and sounding Bazin wilkins 12 speaker stereo actually it's been specifically set up the do two sticks of the spider which are a bit different than the toupee apparently I'm not done yet though because there's loads of other upgrades fitted to this car and they're all carbon related for five thousand eight hundred twenty pounds you get carbon pack one which includes a carbon fiber for the door mirror carbon fiber on the bonnet and carbon fiber rear engine vents carbon fiber packs who is nine thousand one hundred and sixty pounds and here carbon rear bumper and diffuser three thousand eight hundred eighty pounds gives you carbon fiber pack three which includes a common fiber here on the b-pillar and in the eye sockets which is around the headlights if you wanna see the carbon fiber of the mono tube such as up here then you have to pay four thousand 110 pounds the reason it's more expensive even though it's carbon fiber anyway is because it requires a higher grade of carbon fiber so it looks nicer it's not stronger it's just prettier six thousand one hundred and seventy pounds will get you the front diffuser finished and gloss two thousand thirteen ninety pounds will get your carbon fiber on the steering wheel around the door switches and also round these controls here and for a further two thousand two hundred ninety pounds you can have carbon fiber find the infotainment screen and the slim display and also this hockey stick design there on the door rather have this part in carbon fiber instead of leather or Alcantara there'll be five thousand six hundred pounds please these arrow bridges are normally plastic but for three grand you can have them in carbon fiber seven thousand five hundred pages yl cost you to have this tonneau cover in carbon fiber rather than they're no more lightweight allodynia the carbon fiber cell cover on this car is already put you badly scratch which is not good considering it cost two thousand and seven hundred pounds wasn't me to have this rear deck and carbon fiber is two thousand four hundred pounds if you want these extended length gear selectors made air carbon fiber of course that's one thousand nine hundred and eighty pounds and that is at the end of the options and if I add them all up on my calculator they come to in total ninety three thousand one hundred and sixty pounds which is about the same price as a new Porsche 911 when you add that to the cost per car the total of this particular vehicle AB here is 330,000 160 pounds who serve affair spiders all about style and being seen and this car is one rapid convertible in more ways than one McLaren says that this car has a fastest folding roof at any supercar and I'm gonna see just how quick it is by racing it against the 720s coupe a over the standing quarter mile right so here we go three two one oh so close the car did the standing quarter mile in ten point four seconds which is exactly what this spider can do as well the roof took 11 seconds well that was rather impressive there is also something else which is class-leading about the 720 s is folding roof when you convert a car from being a coupe a to a convertible you often add weight for the roof mechanism and other bits and pieces for instance with this 720 s spider they've had to fit new door hinges which adds almost 7 kilos however the doors themselves are a little bit lies about 3 kilos lighter because they're now frameless but then there's er the bits and pieces such as look at this you have to have a tonneau cover though this one isn't particularly heavy because it's made out of carbon fiber so it's less than 6 kilos but then there's a whole roof mechanism and all the motors and stuff and when you add it all together the spider version of the 720 is 49 kilos heavier than the coupe a may sound like a lot but when you compare that to other cars such as the Audi r8 or ws it's almost 90 kilos heavier than the coupe a the Ferrari 488 pista the convertible is a hundred kilos heavier than the coupe a the Aston Martin db9 110 kilos the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder is 120 kilos heavier than the coupe a now part of the reason that I did weigh is that when you take the roof off a car you actually have to add strengthening to the chassis to make up for that loss of rigidity but not so with the McLaren as I'll explain now along with some of the cool things about the car the carbon fibre tub is as strong as the ku pays and it weighs the same 73 kilos which is exactly what I weigh now I've been on a diet you know what if this was made out of normal steel I'll be able to do this at all because it weigh around 350 kilos yeah making videos and making gains these flying buttresses provide a little bit of downforce they also help the channel air into the engine and look at this it made an address so you can see through them which is handy when you're looking over your shoulder to bark rollover protection hoops are actually integrated into the cars tub so knowing is it look cool it also helps get the weight down if you want to have the roof up but still want to be able to hear the engine as best as you can you can just lower the rear window if you want you can keep the car spoiler in the upper position but how do you prefer it up or down click on the pop-out band in the top right corner of the screen to vote for your favorite position position I'm talking about the rear spoiler smokey buggers not everything about the 720's spider is great though here's five annoying things about it the dole pockets automatically lock when the doors open to stop stuff falling out but that means that if you forgetting listening in there in order to get at it you have to first shut the door so you can get it out depending on where the Sun is the central - be can reflects horribly in the windscreen it's a bit off-putting the Sun Visor isn't particularly good it doesn't block out any Sun there also that way it's really cheap you can't detach it to move it to the side and look at this horror of Horrors the vanity mirror doesn't have any light to illuminate you when it's dark this McCarran has a slightly smaller fuel tank than its key competitors which means you're gonna have to stop at petrol stations and rub shoulders with the general public more often passenger legroom isn't all that great look even with the chair pushed all the way back I can't fully extend my legs and I've got short ass legs while I'm at it the electric controls from the sea are really fiddly and confusing by now you're probably dying to know what the 720s spider feels like to drive well let me explain this car has a 4 liter twin-turbo v8 with 720 horsepower 770 Newton meters of torque and he can get from nought to 60 in just 2.8 seconds what does that feel like well I'll show you now by putting it into launch mode all I have to do is floor the throttle boost is building and we're off at 60 I was 60 like that that is insane and this car will keep going to 212 miles an hour though if you have the roof off it'll only do 202 miles an hour what a shame a actually they'll be very careful this thing is so fast and so punchy and gear because of that turbo boost you're doing over 100 miles an hour before you know it and I've been warned by the people of MacArthur here when I'm driving being in Arizona if they catch me doing over 100 I'll be in prison and I do not want to end up some hairy biker's jail cell plaything so I've got to be careful actually one of the great things about this car is that you can actually slacken it off and just take it easy it's quite a chilled thing when you're just cruising around the suspension is absolutely brilliant over bumps it's got a special active suspension system which can predict bumps you can predict the way the cars leaning and it will just keep it flat in the corners so rides brilliantly yet handles brilliantly too they can actually alter the suspension stiffness from comfort to sport which is quite good to fast road driving more track and then it's really it's quite firm but not terrible and it changes the display as well although you can put it back and I prefer it in the normal mode you can also change the gearbox from Comfort so it slurs the gears together nicely to sport and then it's faster the gear changes and it makes a nice pop when you change they did it then it's a little bit random and you feel a bit like you've won the lottery when you get it to do it some like the Italian cause they do it every single time it's just predictable this No it's like a gun going off in the distance that's cool then you can put it into track mode and it just slams home the key is really shoves you in the back this is a car that's very easy to drive fast I love the brakes as well the brakes are phenomenal they're common ceramics but they're not grabby and when you really slam them on the air brake at the back pops up to help slow down even more looks cool and it serves a purpose as well the steering is super sharp and the way you can just slow it down a twisty road it is insanely quick and despite being a convertible it feels exactly the same as the coupe a to drive that doesn't seem to be any loss or trade-off in terms of the dynamics by God but I was getting seriously fast there but let's slow it down that's what I'm talking about it just creeps up on you the speed in this thing it is nuts [Music] so then what's my verdict on this macarons 720's spider should you avoid it should you consider it should he shortlist it well she did just go right ahead and buy it well I reckon you should just go right ahead and buy this car because if you want the supercar with the least
