family allow me in this introduction to elucidate what I'm attempting to articulate when I say uncommon sense I am arguing and contending that sometimes common sense it in common and if common sense isn't always common then we don't want common sense we want uncommon sense because we can only live an uncommon life when we're operating with uncommon sense and if you explore objectively all of the words that the Scriptures used to describe the life of a person who is living according to God's creative intent you will discover that common is not one of them salt light peculiar chosen accept it Belov heared not the tail above only not beneath not just the conqueror but more than a conqueror all words that the Scriptures used to describe the life of those who follow the person the practices and the principles of Jesus and I think those of us who are seated in this sacred space today watching online if we were to honestly audit our desires I think many of us would conclude we don't want common don't want common joy come in peace common relationships we want nothing more and nothing less than God's best for our life can I hear a good amen and what I've learned is that there is an invisible contributing factor that greatly determines whether or not this uncoming possibility becomes our actual experience it is the root of this series of sermons we're beginning today and is something called a belief system everyone's a belief system pass Adair's what is a belief system it's an accumulation of beliefs that we have unconsciously acquired throughout our lifetime through information observation exposure and experiences it is it is an accumulation of beliefs listen to this that we have oftentimes unconsciously acquired not intentional but but through information we've received observation which is things we saw exposure which is things we've been exposed to and experiences that we have had our belief system is the invisible force behind our behavior Stephan Pierre says it is your autopilot and it greatly impacts the course and the quality of your life are you following me so far they're gonna put a diagram on the screens I want you to see this because I think it depicts what I'm attempting to declare we all have beliefs somebody say yes those beliefs create emotional states somebody say yes our emotional states impact our thoughts someone say yes they both impact our behavior somebody say yes and then our behavior creates results somebody say yes and then those results reaffirm our beliefs somebody say yes all right you got me so we have beliefs that create emotional states that impact our thoughts that drive our behaviors that create results are you following it but belief systems are root systems meaning they are underneath the surface and without intentional introspection and exploration we don't always know what we are what we know is how I feel what I'm thinking what I'm behaving and the results that it is producing everybody following me so far now this is important because some belief systems are based on results we've gotten but the results that we've gotten are based on something that's feeding see the one thing that's not on the board is the one thing that affects everything because something is feeding this and if what is feeding this is wrong then this will be wrong then this will be wrong then this will be wrong even though it's real see just because this is real doesn't mean this is right so if something happens that tells me I'm a failure I'll start feeling like a failure thinking like a failure behaving like a failure and then I have results consistent with a failure and if I have those results long enough I'll be defining myself as a failure when I got the wrong information which created the wrong beliefs which made me feel the wrong way think the wrong things behave the wrong way get the wrong result and give a wrong definition of myself you are not a failure you are not inadequate you are not at a deficit you are more than capable more than competent fearfully and wonderfully made [Applause] see I want you to see I want you to see this because if we don't get this then religion will never work the way God intended for it to work because religion is only transformative when you allow it to be the authority that determines what you believe and for many people God's Word is not the authority their experience is right so God's Word can say you are more than able but if experience says to you you are inadequate many people unintentionally put their experience over God's Word see let's look at this now let's look at it because watch this part of what the Scriptures teach us that one of the ways our faith benefits us not the only way but one of the ways our faith business benefits us is it improves the emotional quality of our life you cannot read the New Testament specifically the Pauline epistles the stuff Paul wrote and cut and not come away to that conclusion if you look at Galatians chapter 5 verse 23 Paul talks about what he calls the fruit of the Spirit it is the evidence of the spirits work in our life and some of that fruit he says what I'm growing spiritually some of that fruit is emotion joy is that what he says peace is that what he says long-suffering temperance which is self-control it improves the emotional quality of my life so what the enemy does you see if I can get over here and get the wrong thing to feed this it affects this but this is what's scary my emotional my emotional state affects my thought life but then my thought life also affects my emotional state so I'm not gonna feel right if I'm thinking wrong I'm not gonna feel good if I'm thinking bad so here's the challenge with our religion what many of us don't realize is this we come to a point in our faith journey where we got to realize you already believe something about everything God has something to say about I'm gonna say it again are y'all okay you are you give me a few more minutes we already believe something about everything God has something to say about so here it is when we get to our journey of faith not when we begin it but when we get to the point in our journey of faith when we start getting talked I just say when we get saved I said when you finally start getting talked and you're confronted with truth that conflicts with what you already believe about something you have to make a choice whether or not you're going to continue with your belief system or surrender your belief system to God and what God is trying to get us to see is he's a creator so everything we're dealing with has been created and manufactured by him and as the Creator he knows how to get the best use out of it he knows the best way to handle relationships he knows the best way to hand our emotional states he know am i making sense so so here it is we may choose friends based on loyalty because I've had some experiences where people were disloyal and where are y'all ready for this where ever you were hurt the most in your last relationship becomes your place of priority in your next one right so if you dealt with chronic disloyalty it means what you're gonna prioritize in the next one is loyalty right so it's like I just need somebody lawyer I just need somebody lawyer I'll just need somebody lawyer I just need somebody lawyer just need somebody lawyer just need somebody lawyer right then then this is what happens you read something like proverbs 13:20 that says walk with the wise man and become wise but a companion of fools suffer harm so so we read something like proverbs 13:20 which in essence says you become like who you walk with whoop Association produces the simulation right so so so here it is we can have a belief system that I can beat with them and never become like them when the scripture will come and say okay you're gonna become like who you want with you can't stay in a house that's on fire and come out and not smell like smoke so then I have to make a decision what belief system I'm gonna go with okay here it is here it is this is what often happens in church people respond with a man's to those things that are lying with what they already believe [Applause] right so if I say something like you need negative toxic people out of your life it's like yes a man throwing hankies how father damn it's just like everybody just is excited but then I say you should be forgiving it's like why because one aligns with your belief system and another doesn't now here it is when you live like that you have to ask yourself am i practicing christian religion or am i creating my own it's dangerous and nowadays very often what people can unconsciously do is instead of picking a place that's going to help accurately a form in form this they pick a place that simply aligns with and affirms what they already believe the quality of my life doesn't change until this does I can change my morals and be a wreck here a wreck we can be a moral frantic fearful overwhelmed overworked stress saved on my way to heaven anyhow person you're going to heaven but the thought life has not improved does that make sense now everything I just taught you is a prepare to rebel everything is that everything that I just taught is powerfully portrayed in a narrative found in the Book of Numbers at numbers 13 we get introduced to a man named Moses who's been called by God to provide spiritual leadership to a group of people called the Israelites the Israelites were in Egypt for over 400 years they dealt with Egyptian captivity they will oppress suppress dehumanize lived in poverty lived as slaves God calls Moses to lead an exodus it means exits because God is a God of exits it means that even if you believe God's a God of exits and you're a child of God it means you're never trapped that God will always find a way to get you out of whatever you in even if you don't see a way there is a way even if you don't feel the way there is a way if he's got to part the Red Sea he'll make a weight right so so but Moses is tasked with leading them to a land that was called Canaan it was agriculturally rich and it's supposed to be a place of rest where they didn't have to war and fight for the rest of their life making sense here so Moses and his successor Joshua if you ain't changed college and change College make some noise let me hear you anybody in change college if you're in changed college which school of ministry here it is you know that Moses and Joshua are serve as an anti-type of Jesus they are metaphor in the Old Testament for Jesus in the New Testament so just like Joshua leads Israel to a literal literal Canaan Jesus leads us to a spiritual Canaan which is life as God intended you follow me so as Moses gets ready to take Israel into Canaan I want you to notice what happens he selects 12 people who are part of twelve tribes to go into the land listen to this to figure out how to occupy it not if they should occupy Moses had already determined it was possible and that's one thing a believer has to do a believer has to believe being a believer means I believe I need to believe is possible that when the scripture said he'll give me peace that passes all understanding and they rules my heart and mine it's possible when he says those that sow in tears will reap in joy it's possible when he says weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning it's possible when he says no weapon formed against you shall prosper and every tongue that rises in judgment I will condemn it's possible when he says our open doors that no man can shut and closed doors that no man can open it's possible when he says your enemies will come before you one way but flee before you seven ways it's possible so he sent 12 spies over and they come back and they say look here Moses everything that you said about the land is true but there's some Giants there and those Giants are too big for us we got to remove the Giants to occupy the land they're too big to us and they say we were like grasshoppers in their sight and in our sight also here's my question how do you know you were like grasshoppers in their sight did you ask them or are you projecting what you believe about yourself upon them so here it is 12 of them someone say 12 12 of them went over spied out the land when they came back they told all the other people which was Millions 10 of them said we can't do it two of them one named Joshua another named Caleb say it let's go up at once they said we can do it right now do I have any Joshua and Caleb sin the house do I have any annoying activists in the house do I have any people who who refuse to allow your belief system about what it's possible for you to be persuaded into stagnation by somebody who doesn't believe it's possible for them see when you have the Joshua and Caleb attitude you don't let people tell you it can't be done you tell them no you can't do it somebody better come get me I said no you telling me you can't do it but don't you tell me what I cannot do don't you tell me what I can't accomplish don't you tell me I can't recover don't you tell me it's too late for me to go back to school don't you tell me it's too late for me to start over don't you tell me I can't do this by myself for what man things are impossible but with God all things are possible no you can't do it [Applause] [Applause] so this is what happened Israel those millions of people allowed the perspective of the ten to inform their belief system emotionally they got filled with fear they begin to think fearful thoughts they engage in fearful behavior which means they didn't even try it was a fixed fight they would have won yet they just tried fatally you got it they allowed intimidation to paralyze them to the degree that they didn't trust something they would have succeeded at if they had just tried where where would you be if you had just tried what could you do if you were just try I'm surprised how well a lot of things I did turned out but I thank God that I just tried and the enemy will intimidate you into not try this is what's scary I'm wrapping up I'm wrapping up here it is this is what's scary are you all ready for this this is what's scary all of Israel allow the ten ten spies to influence their belief system so they followed the path and the line of thinking of the majority and the majority was wrong just because everybody else is thinking this way doesn't mean I should be thinking this way here it is here it is so technically they followed the line of reasoning with those and for those that we would call and qualify as uncommon sense it's common sense they had huh they did what was common so they got a common result Joshua and Caleb they say let's go up at once they were thinking they were thinking with uncommon sense and that whole generation actually went no further they didn't try so they died in the wilderness God let Joshua and Caleb live long enough to go in the Cana they had uncommon sense so they got uncommon results and here it is I'm done and the course and the quality of their life Israel was determined are y'all ready for this it was determined by them not knowing who they were not supposed to listen to this is what they did they value the voice of the the ten the same way as they valued the voice of the two and this is what can happen in church when you take God's Word people's opinions the talk show hosts the person the person that's posting the person that's the relationship expert on Instagram that don't have one when we take when we take all of that and you value it the same way then God becomes and his word just becomes another source of information for your life and it does not become the belief system that overrules every other belief system I'm done I was on I remember I was in high school and I was talking about college and my desire to go to college and read and all of those kinds of things are things my dad put in me Timothy Daniels he put that in me I got my when I accepted my call to ministry at 19 I was an undergrad I didn't even know what seminary was and we were standing somewhere we were at a church and he told another pass he said yeah just accept it's called a ministry once he finishes his undergrad he's going to go to seminary like dr. King I was like Cemetery Cemetery I don't think I want to go to head there uh-huh no sometimes yeah and then he said then he said like all my family most of my families Baptist and so in that tradition when I was growing up in Mississippi he called everybody doc what's up doc how you doing doc and then he said and then he's gonna go on and get his doctorate he's gonna be the first person that's a Daniels that has an earned doctorate he put that in me so we so we were talking about where I was going to go for undergrad and I was strongly considering a college in Atlanta called Morehouse College and and I was talking about it and we had another family member president and I told that family I'm thinking about going to Morehouse and that family member well well-intended you know my family was modest means for me if they weren't able to financially send me to college so this person knew that they said oh man you're not gonna be able to go to Morehouse those out-of-state fees is gonna kill you right there in the presence of me my father heard that and my dad said to this other person in my family he said don't you ever tell him what he can't do [Applause] and then he looked at me he said you can go wherever you put your mind to now watch this I want to say this to parents to coaches to teachers to friends aunts uncles I didn't give my dad a reaction that was over 20-something years ago so he had no clue how that impacted me because I didn't give him a reaction but I don't remember a whole lot of stuff he said to me but I remember that and I have lived my life believing what my dad put in my belief system I believed it then and I believe it now I believe we can do anything that we can put two churches in New Jersey put an extension site in LA put one in Orlando that we can do whatever God calls us to do because I had somebody here it is this is my point I had one person giving me one set of information but my father came in and he overruled it i'ma say it again I had you got it I had one person who's giving me one set of information but my father came in and overruled it I had one person that was telling me what I couldn't do but my father came in and overruled you may have had some people in your life tell you what you can't do tell you what you can't tell you what you can't accomplish but you got a Heavenly Father that wants to come in and he wants to overrule it [Applause] where would Jesus be if he didn't know who not to listen to lord remove and replace my limited inferior debilitating belief system you created everything so you know how everything is supposed to work and I value your voice above all other voices no one's voice has value like yours because no one has the expertise you do you
