high-pressure air blown under the skin will rip the skin away from the flesh what's way more dangerous than most people think driving tired sleepy this is a good one I almost got plowed to death by an SUV once because a lady fell asleep while driving with her two small children took out a sign and came at me on the sidewalk I had to action dodge behind a tree she and the kids were all okay just really shaken up and I called them an ambulance and hung out until paramedics came to check on everyone I was pretty shaken up about it myself really you don't expect that especially in the middle of the day don't drive tired kids listening to loud music using earbuds or really any headphones having permanent hearing damage sucks I'm 40 with the hearing of a 70 year old tinnitus constant ringing in both ears certain music can make it worse and drive me absolutely batty can't hear people at restaurants and bars what-what-what protect your ears attempting to change garage door springs without knowing what you're doing can kill you always get a pro for garage repair same with car Springs they're literally energy storage devices a mechanical analog of capacitors it's interesting but not surprising that people don't make the connection that the danger of stored energy and how fast it's released is basically the same across all fields my grandfather had a garage door springs accident once when I was a kid I woke up one morning and he had spent the night in the hospital he'd nearly sliced the palm of his hand to the bone and would need months of physical therapy to be able to grip with it again he even said how he felt the air across his face it was that close to being worse living alone if you get seriously injured or ill at home and you're unable to reach a phone your chances of survival are much lower than if you have at least one other person in the household had an older employee who lived with her son she didn't turn up for work very common to not call it our workplace just not for her I had a weird feeling after she wasn't picking up what I call waited a few hours and decided to go knock on her door no answer but her car was there I phoned the non-emergency police line and they showed up and broke she was found in her bedroom on the floor completely out of it and turns out she had a very bad case of meningitis she was admitted to the hospital for a month and they told her if she had been found by her son by the time he returned home from work four hours after we found her she most likely would have been dead not wearing sunblock I had basal cell carcinoma removed from my face when I was 36 I have been wearing sunblock religiously since childhood wear it in winter - that stuff bounces off the snow and own a vast collection of Sun hats my dermatologist says I'm a model Sun prevention patient but the reality is I'm genetically predisposed and it's going to be a lifelong battle wear your sunblock folks doing a stuck car with a chain there is a list of people who have died from having the chain come through the back window and kill them and put some weight in the middle a simple jacket will do that way in case the Rope does snap this can still happen the small weight gives just enough momentum to send the energy down so it will hit the ground or your legs your legs will still shatter but way better than your rib cage or your face driving you see the statistics of car crash deaths but I don't think you ever truly realize how dangerous it is to simply drive somewhere since it is such a routine thing when I started riding motorcycles I began to notice way more people on their phones maybe it's the mindset of being on a motorcycle but it may also be that my head is now above most cars Plus coming to a stop being a car I'll usually be behind and just to the left so if it looks like someone is going to hit me or does hit me I won't get sandwiched every single day that I ride I see more than one person who thinks they're being stealthy I see it on the highway - you might not realize it while doing it but the length of time people consider to be a quick glance as scary deep cuts on your fingertips they're called felons and can infect your bloodstream clean them out and if you see a redline traveling up your arm get yourself to the ER immediately my neighbor almost died from this when she cut her finger on her violin string being knocked unconscious lots of popular media makes it seem like a minor thing that an average person can shrug off after a short period in reality if you are ever knocked out then you have suffered brain damage it's possible there might not be any lasting effects but it's a serious injury and you 100% need to see a doctor if it ever happens to you hiking in the woods with earpieces in even in a suburban area it seems innocent enough but not being fully aware of your environment can lead you to not notice snakes or coyotes or other hikers there's a trail I like to run in it's fairly narrow and flanked by poison oak so people have to kind of stand aside to let others pass since you can't comfortably get around someone who's actively walking anyway the amount of people have come up on who don't hear me because they're listening to music is kind of crazy to me I don't know how they can feel safe being out in nature not hearing anything around them and of course they can't hear me when I talk to them and so I always scare the bejesus out of them when I touch their shoulder to ask if I can pass by a kind of random one but don't eat uncooked slugs or snails they can have parasites that will make you paralyzed and eventually kill you an Australian kid died a couple of years ago from an an awful way to go there was a similar story recently a guy who liked to joke around a tag echo on dare at a party and died a few days later his death was caused by the resultant either extremely bad Salmonella or apparently more likely it was a tapeworm either way his death sounds like a horrifying and miserable way to go and I feel so bad for that his wife and kids definitely would caution against eat uncooked animals and random animals that you don't know where they've been cat bites five year veterinary assistant here cat bites are far more dangerous than cat scratches as the mouth is full of harmful bacteria another problem with cat bites is how it penetrates the skin it's a deep narrow puncture with a harmful bacteria so deep within the skin our body cannot properly flush out the bacteria blowing into an orifice can cause an air embolism air embolism can indeed happen in orifices such as the vag or anus but from what I admittedly briefly read it's rare and there's usually an already present injury that allows the air to go past worked at about plant in the early 90s all pneumatic equipment close quarters idiots everyone has a nozzle they hook on that they use to clear their work area a new guy thought it would be funny to use his to blow air up his coworkers but coworker almost died someone replied something of this sort happened to a friend of mine we both got a summer job at a powder coating company it was standard practice to use the high-pressure air line to blow the worst of the powder off our hands before taking a break we'd still wash our hands but the air was a good way to get most of the powder off first turned out my friend had a small cut on the inside of his wrist maybe one centimeter long the air from the high-pressure air line got into that cut and it was horrible my brother had a summer job at an abattoir and later told me that was how they skinned carcasses high-pressure air blown under the skin will rip the skin away from the flesh and that was what happened to my friend the air traveled up inside his skin to the elbow his forearm blew up like a balloon he had to go straight to the hospital they were worried the air might have gotten into a vein or something and might reach his brain or heart as it was he was ok off work for a week then good as new but everyone was banned from spraying ourselves down with the high-pressure air hose again the ocean both for swimming surfing and boating it is 100% not just a big swimming pool or lake human beings are in a completely alien environment as soon as they step off the sand or dock and our perceptions about how things ought to play out no longer matter the ocean is completely indifferent to human reasoning and even to human mortality I'm teaching a good friend to sail right now and he's naive ly ambitious as far as sailing long distances in a very small boat I wasn't joking at all when I chided him by saying you haven't been scared enough times yet the reason I'm so conservative in and around the ocean is because I've developed a healthy totally reasonable fear of it over the course of my life anybody who isn't a little afraid of the ocean hasn't spent enough time around it bandwagoning when everyone basically adopts a hive mind and everyone collectively does the same thing even if it's wrong it's not necessarily wrong or dangerous to believe what the general public believes if you have a firm understanding of why you believe it basically can you argue your position well if so excellent it may very well be true and you've arrived at it through reason not emotion or peer pressure but also are you willing to discuss the other side of your issue in a civil manner without getting angry even if you both cannot agree this is vital it's the binding agent of society civil discourse we're losing cohesiveness because of echo chambers and anger without honestly talking to each other I will discuss anything with anyone and I won't get mad I cannot for the sake of the future I don't care if you believe the earth is flat that climate change is a hoax that climate change will cause a total ecological collapse that taxation is theft that the state needs to be bigger and more powerful I could go on infinitely I have my own thoughts on the matter and I think I am correct but I leave the door open that maybe I didn't think my position through clearly to its logical conclusion or maybe one of my premises was factually wrong who knows but I want to find out walking down stairs with your hands in your pockets never ever do it especially not drunk a fall down even one or two stairs with no hands to catch you can break your neck I've seen a video of a man tripping and falling down four stairs hitting the top of his head on the wall and dying right there in the stairwell power washers the stream can easily slice open skin deep and cause bleeding and if sustained long enough death they actually use a certain type of power washer to knock down concrete buildings when they make a mistake there's only like four in the UK and six guys qualified to use it the host blows holes through buildings literally my neighbor power washed his foot wearing sandals didn't break the skin but ended up septic because it knocked some bacteria loose that was in his foot he almost died and he lost his leg sitting in your car when it's broken down on the side of the road put your hazards on people my great-grandfather was driving down a road and saw a woman with a flat tire decided to help her out parked his car in front of her son was grabbing his tire iron out of his trunk somebody didn't see her car didn't have her hazards on and slammed into the back of her car her car flew forward and hit great Grandpa's car pinning him in between he survived but lost both legs above the knee hypothermia if your clothes get soaked and you can't dry out and warm up temps in the 50s F can kill you this is how people going on day hikes get killed something happens and they can't get back to their car or Lodge the weather changes and they can't find shelter and they get wet they die of exposure my Scoutmaster Tata sports the hard way by teaching us the importance of planning he made us traverse a stream and while our packs didn't get wet because we were carrying them above our heads we did get soaked up to about our chest in cool water the temperature was around 55 F that day which is not that cold and kinda nice after we got to the other side you would not believe how quickly we got cold especially if there is no cover from the wind and within a few minutes our hands became useless and we couldn't start a fire the shivering got so bad it was incapacitating the cold set in fast we learned that day that we needed to make sure our clothes remain dry even if that means stripping down but naked to cross the stream and that we needed to have fire already made under smoldering ember ready to go along with tinder so that we could get a fire going quickly that is if we didn't have matches or a fire steal so we crossed the stream put our dry clothes back on start a fire to warm up and dry out and immediately start working on shelter hard lessons don't leave you even after 30 years being in the water near dams going over a dam whether you are in a boat a tube or body surfing even though three-foot dams can cause issues dams in the US have been built straight across the water when the water flows over a dam it is immediately pushed to the bottom of the riverbed the water going deep has now created a hole where there should be water near the top so water that was downstream comes rushing back up store to the dam if you go over the dam you will sink to the bottom surface and then get pushed back towards where the water is falling over the dam again that water pushes you under again you float downstream a tiny bit and the once again gets sucked back toward the dam to get pushed under again this can happen even if you are in a sealed kayak or wearing a PFD the best way to get out if you are cycling through like that is to curl up into a ball and try to get as low down in the water as possible there is a chance you may float far enough under water to break free if the cycle and remember if you are playing below a dam that the water will be rushing from downstream back up toward the dam remember that cycle of downstream water filling and when the water flowing over the dam goes deep well you can start below the dam end up in the water that is going back upstream and get sucked into that same cycle so be aware of dams don't kayak over them be careful if you are below one misinformation yesterday I commented on a World News threat where the top comment gave completely wrong information about the article that was posted it was an assumption based on the title of the article the poster quickly retracted what they wrote in another comment but people kept up voting the comment that was giving wrong information I was really baffled and realized very few people were actually reading the article which in and of itself had been ripped off of a short BBC video both the original video and article were misleadingly titled one too cried starving elephants and the other celebrated freed elephants though the original video mentioned both topics it was about neither people just up voted what they probably thought summarize the article best so if people in World News are reading the title of the article which was very misleading and top comment of a thread thinking that's a good indicator of what the article said 8.2 K R editors are now misinformed this was not a top and front page article but it really shows how quickly misinformation can spread thanks for listening to Radio TTS hit the subscribe button and activate the notification bell for a free raw snail
