stuff christians need to stop saying amen say hi girls [Music] hi lulu this video is about like jump across oh [Music] good job auggie we're staying at a friend's house this is not my house let's talk about the things that like christians got to stop saying here's some examples of stuff that people put on my instagram story i just asked this simple question and people started really going hard on things that they wish christians would stop seeing you may be thinking what's the big deal about talking about like saying phrases like this like why are you making this video alex let's get into it because phrases like this they seem harmless but they actually can be harmful before before i explain why we shouldn't use language like this i don't i want to make it clear that i'm not saying that people need to stop talking about god in public or even talking about god in general i'm the guy that talks about god online for a living and so just want to make it clear there's other creative ways to talk about god and part of it is just being normal not like being so like gen z with it where you're like god i just want you to flex on these people or you know god you kept it lit you know when we when the people of israel were brought out of egypt like i'm not saying you gotta talk like that i'm not saying you have to swing to the other side and like don't use any spiritual type language i'm just saying just be yourself express like how god is speaking to you in a normal vulnerable way a lot of times like we just don't want to listen long enough to non-believers in order to have a proper understanding of what they're saying so that we can communicate our faith in a way that is helpful along also at the same time um it just also means like maybe taking some time to explain not everything has to be you know this quick answer or this quick thing like i'm going to pray for that the non-believer who hears you say that it's like what does that mean are you going to pray to the saints because some catholics christians do that you know are you going to pray to multiple gods because they don't even know what the trinity is are you going to pray to one god and so saying like i'm gonna pray for you also not even really even praying for that person after we say that one thing that we can do is just take the time to communicate whatever that person is going through so if they say hey i'm my parents are having a divorce it's been really hard for me and they don't bring up anything about god what we can do in that moment is we can say hey i'm gonna let you know i'm a man of faith or you know me i'm a christian and so i i talk to god you know and he talks back to me through his word or sometimes through ways i can't explain but what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna talk to god about your situation and i'm gonna get back to you and hopefully you know he can guide me on how i can be a better friend to you taking that time to not just say i'm gonna pray for you and walk away but taking time to like communicate how you can help that means a lot to anybody especially a non-believer because you're helping them understand what it means for you to be a christian no i didn't hear you oh i just said or you can ask them if you can pray for them in that moment yeah that's a good idea this is the book that inspired this video because on page 105 and 106 of preaching by dr tim keller my favorite pastor it's a book about communicating faith in an age of skepticism he talks about these things and what i love that he says is that this is not me airing out my linguistic pet peeves meaning these aren't things that just annoy me that people say that we need to stop saying because they annoy me that's not what this video is about i agree with that another thing he says is this is not about christian marketing marketing is like when a company uses a certain color or a certain phrase in order to test well with their customers i'm not saying that non-believers are our customers and we need to make sure that the words we use test well with them and so that they buy into the gospel not saying that saying that the problem is much bigger than either of those things and that's what he communicates in the book bigger problem is that these words and these phrases they are three things they're boundary markers they're hypocritical and they're also exclusive and let's talk about all these first of all boundary markers if you were to go to like a disney park or six flags or something and you were standing in line and someone of a different uh race and country were speaking a different language next to you if you've experienced that you know it kind of feels like they're talking about you you kind of feel like excluded you're like what's going on what are they saying and uh it makes you feel uncomfortable a little bit and they have every right to talk about what they want to talk about language is you know used to communicate different things and these phrases that we're using they're meant to communicate different things and that's fine it just started raining i don't know if you guys can see but it's like so beautiful and so if you hear some rain that's just the aesthetic vibe that god is giving off right now and so these language things what they do is they help us communicate but when you're in that moment you feel like man are they talking about me or what am i missing out on or i'm uncomfortable and that's how these phrases make non-believers feel they're a boundary marker they are drawing a line in the metaphorical sand it's it makes people feel like i'm a part of this tribe and other people aren't a part of this tribe and that makes them feel like okay well what do i do i'm not a part of this like how do i it makes them feel excluded and it's a that's a very very bad feeling to feel another thing is that it's hypocritical because they act as like an enabler of hypocrisy using phrases like this they're kind of like a shortcut to get to sounding spiritual even though your heart may not even be in a place of loving god delighting in god truly being you know in communion with god your heart might not be there but your lips and your tongue could be by saying stuff like oh daddy god or lord i just feel that you're just moving like stuff like keeping up these little phrases that don't really even mean a lot we just hear other people say them and so we repeat them thinking that people are going to think that i sound spiritual this happened to me once this week and the opposite happened and i love when the opposite happened so i was up you know somewhere i'm not gonna say where because they might be watching this video but someone ran into me and i hadn't seen them in a long time and they just started like throwing out these like spiritual phrases like bro god is good bro and i just feel like you know like you know we just like you know this is just you know god really like meant this to be like all this like stuff and i was just kind of like sitting there like oh cool yeah that's what's up you know and i heard him talking to some other friends afterwards and he wasn't talking like that he was just being himself he was just talking like they were like just hanging out and he was just using normal words and i was like listening far away and i was like just talk like that all the time like don't think because i'm a christian content creator or i'm a pastor you got to talk to me that way that's not cool don't do that uh the opposite also has happens too i have this friend who's not a new believer and he like cusses like right after church cusses like drops f-bombs all this stuff and you know of course i don't want him to speak like that forever but it made me feel like yes bro don't change who you are because i'm a pastor like don't like stop talking how you normally talk just because i'm a pastor just because i'm christian that's how you talk just talk that way he will he will learn by coming to our church by learning how i speak because i don't talk like that he'll learn what those words mean and what the position of their heart is when they say certain things that's a different video but the main point is like they're using these phrases are kind of a shortcut to sounding spiritual when you may not even be in a spiritual place and that's why the bible says blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven he's saying those who know that they are poor spiritually belong to the kingdom of god the kingdom of heaven not those who are hypocritical and think that they have it all together and they sound very spiritual and they act super spiritual those people don't belong to the kingdom of heaven if anything those are the people who are excluded from the kingdom of heaven so let's talk about the last thing that these words do they are exclusive not inclusive now i know inclusivity is like a hot topic right now and a lot of people are saying well your church is trying to be inc inclusive and your ministry is trying to be inclusive and i know we understand that as like being like laxadaisical with the word of god uh letting people just live in their sin letting people do whatever they want to do that's what we think inclusivity means it means accepting stuff that the bible doesn't even agree with just because you want more people to come to your platform or to your church that's what we think inclusivity means in our culture but the word inclusivity doesn't even mean that it's the opposite of exclusivity exclusivity uh is to kick people out to say that you are not included you're excluded you can't like cruise with us you know just like in mean girls you can't sit with us you're not welcome and jesus wasn't like that jesus was a friend of sinners not a foe of sinners you know in fact jesus on the cross was crucified like a sinner in between two sinners two thieves because he did that so that we could be accepted and friends with him we are the ones that are sinners yet we're treated like jesus we're treated like a son of god we're treated like god's only begotten son that's how god treats us and that's how god looks at us after we have trusted and believed in christ because what did christ do he was treated like a sinner on our behalf christ was treated like a sinner we were treated like christ he did that so that we could learn to be friends with sinners so that we could learn to reach out to be inclusive to say hey come over here no i don't necessarily agree with everything that you're doing i don't regret unnecessarily you know agree with how you're living but hey just come sit down okay let's just let's go play football let's go for a walk let's go for a run let's get some coffee you can talk however you want to talk to me you can use whatever words you want to use let's just i just want to listen to you i just want to hear you out when they hear words like um the spirit is really moving when they hear phrases like that yes the spirit may be moving that's fine but when they are we around non-believers who hear that they think i'm not welcome here i'm excluded from this conversation i guys i have a six-year-old and he asks me questions every day why this why that why this what does this mean like he asked me what does the word like slow mean like he asked me stuff like that and i'm like i don't know not fast and then he's like what does fast mean and i'm like i don't even know how to describe it some of the words that he's trying to understand are so simple and he wants to know the meaning behind it it's like how do i even describe this that's how you know non-believers are guys don't forget just because we grew up in church and we've been around these words our whole life it doesn't mean you always knew what these words mean you always knew what these phrases mean it took us time to understand these phrases let's not forget how we used to be and when we use phrases like this it makes non-believers feel like well what does that even mean what does it mean for you know god told me to tell you what is god spoke to you directly like what how did that happen you know and god may tell you stuff to tell people but we got to always be you know remembering that we're poor in spirit remembering that we weren't always believers who knew what these words mean and remember that our job here is the great commission that is to go out into all the world and make disciples matthew 28 19 go out and make disciples how do we do that by being friends not foes not being over familiar not being you know you know not like uh changing our mission and changing what we're supposed to do and you know the thing is jesus was friends with jesus jesus was friends with sinners he didn't act like sinners you know he didn't he didn't do what they did he just he ate with them he listened to them he took time to tell them stories and to teach them about god in a way that they can understand but he didn't do what they did that's our mission be around them you know maybe hang out with them a little bit and be who god told you to be be salt and the light of this earth and even that you know people like okay alex i'm a new believer what does salt and light mean jesus says like we're salt what does salt do well back in the old day do it days and this is proof that i'm still working on this guys like i gotta watch what i say too so i can make sure other people are feeling like included into the conversation but salt was used like refrigerators back then they would pour salt on meat to keep it from going bad god says christians are like that too they're preservatives in this world to preserve this world because this world is decaying and rotting like old disgusting meat because of all the sin in the world and sin is simply just missing the mark missing the mark of what god standard is for us being light means you know to light up the darkness the world is dark because of sin and so what christians do they bring light they show okay this is the path this is where we're supposed to go this is who god has called you to be this is the direction that god wants for your life that's what christians do we bring those two things and so i love you guys i hope this helps and i hope uh the conversation in the comment section
