The YOUNGEST Fooler Yet!!! Sanjeev Vinodh on Penn and Teller Fool Us

any magician who fools pen and teller walks away with a foolless trophy and a ticket to perform in their las vegas magic spectacular so let's meet tonight's first potential fooler hi i'm sanjiva no then i'm 19 years old i was born in illinois but my family's moved a lot we even lived in india for five years where i learned to speak five different languages i even speak dothraki i have a real love for language i have an unusual creative space my parents banned me from doing magic for a bit so i hid magic props in the bathroom and practiced for hours without them knowing and it's just stuck the bathroom is my safe space where i developed my magic tricks still to this day now my parents are very supportive of my magic ever since i was 12 if i told my mom if i accept any award whatsoever i thank her so mom i hope i feel fine and taller for you give it up for the smooth magic of sanjeev the node as a student of linguistics i study language and something that's always intrigued me is silent letters english has tons of them for example island has a silent s we spell it but we don't pronounce it why as if english isn't weird enough already my personal favorite is the word q it's spelled q-u-e-u-e one letter pronounced and all the others are silent they just disappear these letters deserve better they deserve a voice so today i want to share my owed to silent letters and specifically to using the only thing more mysterious than the english language magic first let's create a playing card tell her you get to pick the suit would you like clubs hearts spades or diamonds spades perfect and pen there's 13 different spades from ace through king which one would you like jack the jack that's j-a-c-k that's appropriate but we have the jack of spades as part of my homage to silent letters i brought a special deck of cards with me you'll notice that the back of each card has a word with silent letters for example island [Applause] that's a classic you'll also see that the silent letter in each word is underlined and capitalized so that they know that they matter but this is an ode to kuwait way so there's exactly one card in here that has the word kuwait way written on the back and before any of this began you two created a random card it was the jack jck of spades yes one card created one card kuwaiwe the jack of spades well q you know one letter pronounced and all the others are silent they just disappear and just like q the card you created is the only one that's pronounced every other card in this deck is silent they've just disappeared and that is my old the queue i'm team but that's very impressive awesome thank you you're very comfortable up here where did that come from i used to compete in public speaking all through high school so i just moved from india to illinois yes this is a dramatic move and i think all the other club deadlines had passed so speech and debate was the only one that was open and i tried it and i think i fell in love most with the people there and it became a community in an area that was completely new to me so what's the best magic advice you ever got it's to polarize where it is better to be loved by some and hated by some rather than to be kind of liked by everyone so do you feel there's a lot on the line tonight i i definitely think that this show has been unique as a platform in showcasing the best magic to the world in in really creating the public perception of magic and at that point it's not about fooling anymore so i think there's a lot on the line about me being here in the first place but you did come here to fool them yes it would be nice yeah it would be quite nice it would be quite nice all right sanjeev let's see if penn and teller can spell out how you did your trick oh sanjeev what a great routine what a nice routine and what a great style you have it's so professorial instead of slimy magician it's just uh just really it takes one to know one but i do know them and now let's get down to your trick no doubt it's a fabulous presentation but let's get down to what the game's all about i've got a list of a lot of questions and um there's a lot of basic principles that i'm going to skirt around that a lot of magicians use so stay with me first of all uh we're not going to walk up there now i'm just going to take your true word but uh we could not examine that deck is that right oh the the cards that are yeah they're gimmicked in some way then we're going to go into what way they're gimmicked you you can yeah these are yours they can be examined yes the cards can be examined yes yes i will take you at your word but well cross that out okay i've got uh that you fooled us congratulations [Music] congrats thank you [Applause] congratulations we have our first fuller in the house will penn and teller get fooled again come back and find out when fullest returns [Applause] you
