Glad to see Summoning Salt getting some "competition". These types of videos are really entertaining but only one person doing it meant we'd get a video every 2 weeks usually.

minecraft is an open-world sandbox game all about exploration survival and creativity with an extremely large world that is all yours to explore and design the game is meant to be played while enjoying the moment and taking your time but some people don't play by these rules [Music] beginning development in May of 2009 and officially releasing on November 18 2011 minecraft is one of the most popular games ever with over 180 million copies sold it is the best-selling video game of all time the game has impacted almost everybody in some type of way big or small but some of these people wanted more as with any popular game some people wanted to beat it as fast as possible when minecraft alpha and beta versions were released back in 2009 and 2010 there was actually no end to the game like there is now the in dimension did not exist yet and would not exist until the official release at Minecon 2011 so what did speedrunners do before there was the end well they tried to reach bedrock as fast as possible as ridiculous as it sounds and as ridiculous as it is for the time it was something and it started the development of the speedrunning community within minecraft the first documented speedrun of Minecraft is reaching bedrock in around 2 minutes done by DJ s his comments are as follows now most of you are probably WTF but the only goal of the speedrun of a minecraft speedrun I could figure out of was getting to the bottom bedrock fastest most of this is luck based probably since you'll want to spawn near a tree and some cobblestone visible not get some coal or redstone or iron or similar in the way and not getting in a lava pit or similar anyway my tactic was to restart until a good spawn my could have been better but it's pretty ok get some wood make a workbench make a wood shovel and a wood pickaxe get three cobblestone the wood pickaxe is used for this make a cobblestone pickaxe dig a pit at lower level as possible then just pray and mine down with your cobblestone pickaxe until you reach the bedrock this type of speedrunning prompted other small categories to pop up such as mining diamonds as fast as possible the first part of this type was finished and around three and a half minutes by flaming mage many other small categories were mentioned but never acted upon such as killing a guest as fast as possible entering the nether as fast as possible and other arbitrary goals similar to that but his user TJ p7 154 said minecraft is a sandbox so until the new adventure mode comes out we have to make our own casual speedrunning goal this means that everything is arbitrary so let's arbitrator another category mentioned was a possible 100 percent which would involve collecting at least one of every single item in the game people mentioned how much RNG our run of this magnitude would have was undoubtedly true that it would be extremely hard to get a run like this optimized however an SD a user named Greg speed mentioned the idea of using one seed to find everything the same way every time and at this moment the set seed category was born almost everybody was on board with the idea of using one set seed to do speedruns on but not everyone I'll touch more on that later though seed finding efforts immediately began on the speed demos archive also referred to as SDA thread titled minecraft planning it was around this time that Update 1.0 was released completely changing the game and adding a proper ending planning up diamond rats quickly shifted to planning of stronghold rats a naturally generated structure that houses the portal that leads to the end dimension where the Enderdragon resides the game's final boss weeks of deliberation led to many different possibilities but before we go further it's important to note what is needed to get to the end dimension which is the same whether you're doing a speedrun or not the first thing you need is ender pearls which are used to craft eyes of ender these eyes of ender are would allow you to go to the end as putting them in end portal frames is what activates the portal in order to craft eyes of ender you not only need ender pearls but you need blaze powder - which is crafted by putting blaze rods in the crafting section of your inventory or alternatively a crafting table this means that going to the nether is a requirement which in turn means obsidian is a requirement while this seems like a huge hurdle as you would need a diamond pickaxe to mine the obsidian it was already known that obsidian could be formed by putting flowing water on top of stagnant lava meaning a portal could be formed without a diamond pickaxe once all of that is done you're essentially ready to go to the end but beating the ender dragon with nothing else is unrealistic so most of the theorycrafting on the thread was aimed at figuring out the bare minimum amount of resources that would need to be gathered in order to defeat the dragon such as how many arrows you would need if you would need any Armour and so on and a lot of this would depend on what was found in the seed that was used however this is where two categories split off the SDA thread continued to theorycraft and find seeds based on using glitches such as duplication however others wanted a no dupe glitch category which at the time was basically completely glitchless these two groups had to split because the seeds used for these categories would be completely different for glitch category simply referred to as set seed or SS with glitch applied in the title you could just find a seed with a few chests that contained what you need between villages desert temples nether fortresses and strongholds and then duplicate those items but for set seed glitchless or SS you would need a really good seat with everything you need scattered around the map in a relatively close proximity all-in-all seed funding for a glitchless category would prove to be much more difficult than for a glitch category this challenge was extremely daunting to the community with many people shutting down the idea as a result it was just going to be too hard to find a seed good enough to not use duping and still be fast on top of that without duping you would have to get a bunch of errors manually which would probably involve farming skeletons you also more than link Lee wouldn't have golden apples to rely on and overall you would have to do much more a run of this magnitude would probably take hours one important note is that it was known at this time that beds could be used to do damage to the dragon and snowballs could destroy the end crystals that healed the dragon but people never really tried it because it seemed faster to just duplicate eras however with this talk of a glitchless category people started trying this out but this would only make seed finding harder because of needing sheep for wool and a snow biome for snowballs in addition to a closed nether fortress with blazes a good bit of iron gravel a lava lake and water all of course ideally as close to spawn as possible with all that in mind a stronghold with as many eyes of ender in the portal as possible was also ideal because there's a chance that an end portal can spawn with no eyes of ender in it but there is also a chance that it can spawn with 12 so that was also an important factor when looking for a seed it is also important to note that scripts for finding seeds did exist for a while but they were used solely for set seed runs and they were extremely limited in what they could do so over the period of three years that's as far as said seed glitchless advanced pure speculation people were only doing set seed random seed and random to glitchless' runs as set seed glitchless still seemed to be such a daunting task however this hurdle would finally be jumped in the middle of 2014 when the first run of the category was completed Thorin was completed by in Visigoths 604 in 45 minutes and 28 seconds on September 29 2014 well it was obviously very important as it was the first run of this category to be completed the seed and strategies used were less than ideal first of all a large part of the run depended on luck because under pearls were obtained by killing Enderman with a looting sword this meant that with this specific seed runners collected a looting book from the second desert temple and added it to a sword with an anvil in total for desert temples were visited and it wasn't uncommon that a creeper was found in one of these and blow up killing the and causing a reset after killing enough Enderman to get at least eleven ender pearls because the end portal already had one eye vendor in it the runner would head to the stronghold collecting the resources from the chest and creating another portal with the method explained before after getting blaze rods and creating as a vendor the ender dragon fights started one interesting feature about the end is its generation with a set seed the terrain of the end is always the same however the obsidian pillars with the end crystals on top of them met heal the dragon are entirely random in their height and number sometimes there can be just a few and sometimes there can be over 20 it generally depends on the total area of the end itself but for the most part it's completely random in this one specifically there were about 13 to 15 pillars over quite a large space so it wasn't the best luck the fight took in Visigoths about 13 minutes to complete the combination of a less-than-ideal seed and a slow ender dragon fight is what led to this runs high time another noteworthy thing about the seed is that it's not entirely known where in Visigoths got it from it's safe to assume he either found it himself or googled it but what was for sure is that it was not very optimal the next run to be completed using the seed was done by like a new 100 on November 20th 2014 with a final time of 37 minutes and 40 seconds with a combination of better luck and strategy he was able to shave about eight minutes off of in Visigoths total time he overall had better luck during Enderman hunting and had a cleaner and fight and made use of a better - which had not been done previously this run would stand for a few months until runner Illumina 1337 would shatter the record with a 27:36 On January 11th 2015 the time save in this run was a result of much cleaner movement better luck and a faster and a dragon fight as a result of using beds to do almost all of the damage to the ender dragon it was also at this point that top runners would not destroy all of the end crystals as bed explosions did so much damage that it wasn't really necessary and would just waste time overall the set seed category was finally starting to become more optimized but everyone knew could be improved with a lot better of his seed just a week and a half later a better seed in version 1.6.4 would finally be found and showcased by Japanese runner named taro kitchen during the showcase runners were in awe at this insane seed people weren't exactly sure how he found it at the time but when it was revealed runners were even more shocked [Music] the reason the seed was so special in the first place was because the end portal already had eight eyes of ender in it and in addition the stronghold had chests with a total of four ender pearls inside of them meaning that Enderman hunting was no longer necessary cutting a huge portion of the run out the chances of this happening are about one in 1 million today this still remains as the highest number of eyes found in an end portal randomly in vanilla minecraft with no seed finding techniques I would like to reiterate just how insane this find was like I said the chances of for ender pearl spawning and chests along with the eight eyes was literally one in a million there were no seed finding techniques at the time other than simple scripts so people would just manually look for seeds no one searched as much as taro though and this seed was a testament to how much he grinded it is to this day still one of the luckiest things to happen in Minecraft speedrunning history so Terra's first run on the seed was a 1418 cutting about 13 minutes off of the previous record On January 22nd 2015 here's how the rap goes after gathering nearby resources like wood iron gravel and other essentials taro runs to nearby sheep for wool to craft beds for the dragon fight then heads to the nether with a closed fortress although the blaze spawner is pretty far away he has to get a minimum of two blaze rods in order to make four blaze powder to convert the four ender pearls in the chest into eyes of ender then after returning to the overworld he runs to the stronghold collecting leaves along the way four building blocks the reason leaves are used is because of how fast they are to mine barely losing time have collected optimally after grabbing everything he needs from the stronghold and crafting anything that has yet to be crafted he enters the end and starts the fight as normal another thing that's important to mention is the lack of snow balls used like I said previously snow balls could be used instead of arrows to destroy the crystals and errors could be completely removed from the run because beds did enough damage to the dragon however this seed doesn't have a nearby snow or taiga biome similarly to the last one so runners would have to collect arrows killing nearby chickens along the way for feathers and mining a lot of gravel as well because of the 10% chance of flint dropping because of these issues runners knew the seed wasn't perfect but it was the closest that it would get with the resources currently available the run itself was solid overall there weren't many major mistakes made and taro generally got good luck with mob drops and had consistent strategies but the time could still be lowered drastically with better movement and a better and your dragon fight the run would stand until March 8th when Illumina would take back the record with a time of 13:30 this run saved about 30 seconds in the overworld prior to entering the nether due to faster crafting and better play overall and save the rest of the time with a cleaner under dragon fight just a few weeks before this run two new players were starting to run the sets Eve glitchless category wonderful and the sizzler between these two wonderful would be the first to set a new record after only about a hundred attempts over a few days this quick improvement was due to his knowledge of the game from running other categories and game modes the final time of this run was 13 18 and it was completed on March 10th oh this wouldn't stay the record for very long though because on the same day tar would take back the world record on his own seed with a time of 1317 shaving one second off of the previous time unfortunately tar didn't record this run so it was never an official world record but it was widely accepted as such by the community having an unofficial world record wouldn't be an issue for long though because once again on the same day alumina would crush these two times with at 12:28 as was the case with most of alumina x' early runs a majority of his time save over the previous one was in the first overworld section this was because of how consistent his movement was and how fast his crafting was for the time he never really made any huge mistakes with his crafting while other runners would slip up from time to time it may not seem like a lot but little optimizations in the crafting bench are some of the most important in a category like this because of how much of the little time saves add up it would only be a few days until alumina would smash his own record again with a time of 11:26 this run saves so much time because of a much better nether section in this run he got much better blaze rod drops meaning spending less time killing blazes and he was able to break the gravel that he placed down to get over this lava rather than having to place a bunch of gravel near the spawner and then go back to kill more blazes this in total saved him around a minute over his last world record on the same day alumina would beat his own record again with the time of 1044 a big reason for the time save in this run was a new strategy in the first part of the overworld you see what runners did at first was mine all of the iron they needed from this vein here get all the stone they needed for a furnace and tools and then smelt the iron with this new strategy they would be better utilizing the time it takes for the iron to smelt opting to only mine a few pieces of iron than a piece of coal and then start to smelt the iron they would then go back to the iron and mined the rest that they needed and then get the stone they needed for the rest of the stone tools this saved around 8 to 12 seconds depending on how often was done but it can vary a lot he also sorted his inventory better meaning he wouldn't have to open it to move things around a bunch wall above ground this also saved a few seconds compared to the previous run this really started to show that SSG was a serious category that was starting to become very optimized very quickly and beating the world record wouldn't be such an easy feat anymore Thunder full would show that it was still very much possible though on march 21st when he would be Tulum in his record getting a 940 the first ever sub 10 this was an absolutely huge world record and it was largely due to the like that fund erful got generally a runner has to run all the way to the blaze spawner in order to get the blaze odds they need in this run though wonderful got insanely lucky and to blazes spawned right near the front of the nether fortress meaning he only spent about 30 seconds in the nether in addition a solid ender dragon fight led Thunder foal to clutch out this crazy record it cannot be understated at how insane this run was thousands of attempts were put in by other runners in order to beat this time but the amount of luck needed was almost unbelievable either a runner would have to get the same luck that wonderful God or they would have to become so good at the game that they could just save 30 seconds off of an already near-perfect run with just skill after this run is completed the runner I mentioned previously the sizzler had been improving a lot [Music] ads below 940 people - after hundreds of hours and thousands of attempts sizzler would finally beat wonderful seemingly unbeatable run with a time of 938 on July 29 2015 the first and most important thing I would like to note about this run is that it did not have good blaze lock like funder Falls run David that's just how optimized the category was becoming during this four month or so period to reiterate just how crazy funder falls luck was in these 1500 or so attempts that sizzler did blazes only spawned outside of the fortress of once like I said before the movement and strategies had to become so optimized that sizzler was only ten seconds behind funder Falls around after the nether going into the end he was now only 6 seconds behind the previous world record and a great dragon fight is what gave him the record scissor himself said that he would not be going for the record again the grind he went through for this time was crazy and you would basically need blazes to spawn outside the fortress in order to beat this record at least for now only a couple of weeks later sizzler would complete this run how was such a time save possible when the previous run was already near-perfect before we go any further into that it's important to understand how seeds work in this game to put it simply the whole entire seed is responsible for biome generation however only a part of the seed is responsible for the generation of structures like villages and strongholds cave layouts the nether and the end island due to limitations of the randomizer that the game uses to generate seeds adding 2 to the power of 48 2 seeds will keep the part of the seed that affects structure generation nether generation and end generation the same and only change the last part of the seed which is only responsible for overworld biomes these seeds that just have 2 to the power of 48 added to them are commonly referred to as sister seeds so how is this one found well it had been known for a while that adding 2 to the power of 48 to a seed had the properties that it did with this knowledge a seed finder named as Aleph generated a list of seeds that started by adding 2 to the power of 48 to Tara's original seed and then adding it again and again and again creating many sista seeds in hopes of finding a better seed for SSG this is where another seed finder named crafter dark comes in he also wanted to find a better seed to improve as she at the time and would manually check these seeds to see if they would be better after noticing the existence of a dungeon in one of these seeds he accidentally discovered one of the best seeds to date for the game in addition to the dungeon there was also a taiga biome and a lava pool nearby meaning that runners could finally use snowballs instead of crafting arrows to destroy end crystals with the stronghold near by this solidified the fact that this could be a good seed after a lot of tedious routing crafter dark found that it was indeed faster than the previous seed and runners would immediately start using it with sizzler being the first to get a new record on it with all of that information out of the way let's roughly discuss the route done in this run after collecting some wood scissor digs down into this dungeon to grab iron and a bucket from the chests then he gets some flint and stone and heads back up to the surface to collect wool and water on his way to the lava lake to create another portal he enters the portal into the nether which again is the same as the last seeds nether and actually gets good blaze luck which saves him a lot of time after exiting the nether he collects snowballs to use with a fight which is the first time they will be utilized in this category he also collects leaves on the way to the stronghold when he does get to the Stormhold he gets to avoid going to the library to collect strings because arrows are no long needed to be crafted which also avoids killing chickens up on the surface with a pretty solid end fight sizzler was able to clutch out the record with a time of 917 it was at this time though when runs would start being timed with the in-game timing rhythm this would take loads out of the final time which would prevent people with worse species from having a disadvantage compared to players with good PCs in addition to loads just being inconsistent overall without loads this runs in game time was nine away this one would stand for 10 days until he would beat his own record with a time of 852 overall the run had cleaner early game and two solid Enderdragon fight which led to him saving about 16 seconds on the same day August 19th he would once again beat his own record with a time of 8 21 once again better movement in the overworld saved him some time but he got bad luck in the nether and had to run all the way to the blaze spawner losing a significant amount of time he made this up with a solid and fight and decent pillar RNG five days later sizzurp would drop his time down to an outstanding 737 he starts off the video by noting that this run would be very hard to improve on why exactly his luck in the nether and the end first the blazes spawned outside of the fortress which alone got him 35 seconds ahead of his last record and secondly good luck with the dragon charging him very often got him the rest of the time save he needed to beat his previous record by nearly a minute sizzler stated many times in his commentary over the run that this would be extremely hard to beat and it would probably stand for a long time and oh how right he was nearly two years passed until another world record would happen but the SSG community was not dormant during this two-year period version 1.9 was released arguably the most controversial update in the game's history groundbreaking new things were added that both pleased and displeased the community in and out of speedrunning the controversial part of the update was the way PvP or player versus player and PvE player versus environment had changed making it so that attacks would have to be timed in order to do full damage instead of being able to spam click or jitter click you would now have to wait for this bar to fill up significantly slowing down pvp and PVE in addition to this major change the end was completely revamped including the Android dragon fight itself with this update les pillars would spawn but some would be covered by iron bars it was quickly discovered that you could just shoot under the iron bars though due to the slimmer hitboxes although it was pretty precise this end update immediately begged the question would this new version bring faster recedes - SSG well to answer this question the community would have to look a little deeper into the update at the minor changes added to the game not just the major ones one change that caught the eyes of runners was end portal mechanics like I mentioned toward the beginning of the video there is a chance that end portal spun with all 12 eyes already in the frames however when this happened the portal would not light with the new update though it would because this could skip traveling to the nether the seed fighting community had started looking for good seeds the 12 eyes already in the portal because of how much time it could save this was unfortunately shut down very quickly though another minor addition to 1.9 was that strongholds would spawn much farther away from the seed spawn point than before just the time spent running to the closest stronghold would be slower than going to the nether and this was in conjunction with a slower dragon fight because of all of these things seed funding efforts quickly shifted away from 1.9 and back to other versions of the game mainly 1.7 and 1.8 however because of how tricky searching for seeds on two separate versions was at the same time see finders eventually shifted their focus to 1.8 because it was believed at the time that trading routes would be the future of the category and trading at 1.8 is much much better than at 1.7 so after nearly two years sizzler would beat his insane world record by 10 seconds on March 27 2017 with a final time of 727 this run was phenomenal and the only major time saves are on the run were rng based those being blaze rng and dragon RG the main reason he was able to be dis is PB without good blaze RG it was because of how much he improved his movement and crafting in both sections of the overworld these improvements would make this run extremely difficult to be right well the very next day sizzler would beat this run with a time of 7-eleven a combination of a better dragon fight and blazes spawning outside of the fortress let him beat this insane run by so much this run was extremely good but now the category was getting to a point where it was all dictated by orangie however this wouldn't be an issue for long a runner that goes by the name of Matthieu bolin had wanted the SSG anypercent world record this was around 2016 to 2017 a little bit before sizzler would drop his time by so much in such a short time when sizzler did get the world record though it was a big motivation killer for him in addition the community also wanted his even 1.8 because 1.6 just wasn't a great version and 1.7 would take trade routes out of the question so Matthew asked fellow runner geo squirt to help him as Aleph salt seed finder which never found a new seed for as is she but was able to find hi I'd and portals they started naively looking for new seeds but didn't get very far it was at this point when one of Matthews viewers zero join the effort to find a new seed and he sped up the code immensely by improving the code overall importing it to run on to GPU during this time they found the current SSG peaceful seed but after all this they still wanted to reach their dream of the perfect SSG anypercent scene they quickly realized that they weren't using that much computing power with their current methods and efforts moved to searching through all - ^ 48 or 281 trillion seeds they were at least looking for a closer on hold but also look for other things like hide portals closed and other fortresses in the nether and more obvious things however they didn't need to search for good overworld biomes with these 280 one trillion seeds why well remember before that I mentioned adding 2 ^ 48 - a seed will keep the part of it responsible for structure nether and end generation the same while changing the part of the seed only responsible for biomes well this very important concept is what allowed them to realistically search through so many seeds without this they would have to look through - ^ 64 or 18 quintillion seeds with this method of adding 2 to the power 48 they could simply dwindle down the amount of seeds drawn from the pool of 281 trillion seeds down to the millions that met their set criteria and add 2 to the power of 48 to tweak the biomes to what they want which in this case was mainly a taiga biome in the end 21 people volunteered their computers to run a program overnight some people stopped after the first day but 4 or 5 people ran it for long enough that the project was finished the few million seeds that were taken from this project were run through a 96 core machine that added 2 ^ 48 - them and from there good seeds with all the criteria met were manually checked by runners and seed finders after all the manpower and electricity used the result was the best seed minecraft speedrunning has ever seen the first run to use the seed was done in 7 minutes and 6 seconds by Hawaii Valley on April 19th 2019 nearly 2 years after the previous world record unfortunately footage of this run can no longer be found but it was official this seed little fire under the community and prompted many runners to start grinding the category for the first time or return to it just a few hours later it stiffed man would beat this record by 5 seconds with a 701 we do have footage of this run but the he wasn't so great so I'll use his next run completed by Illumina on the same day with a time of 647 to explain the seed the route and how it save time over the previous scene the first major time save we notice is that there is less time running from the spawn point to a tree to get what you spawn straight in a taiga in this seed so there is immediately a bit of time save after getting three pieces of wood you dig down and collect resources such as stone gravel and Flint while your iron that was just mined is melting why not think about the seed at the time was this herd of sheep which had a chance of spawning his horses due to a bug in the game that will change which mobs are determined to spawn depending on the order of the chunks loaded generally if this happened it was a reset so after sharing that herd of sheep and one other the nether would be entered at this point the seed is about a minute behind the previous one going into the nether but that will change soon after exiting the nether with a much closer blaze spawner meaning no luck involved you would quickly exit the nether then the stronghold is in a cave right next to the portal putting this Eve way ahead of the last one after gathering some items and an ender pearl from some chests one eye of ender is put into the portal that already has 11 eyes in it like I said previously the reason that a seed with twelve eyes in the portal was not chosen was because portal 12 eyes did not light in 1.8 this six minute and 47 second round was pretty solid overall but the dragon fight was not great because of some dragon charge is not being taken advantage of this seed still had a ton of potential and the time could be taken down a lot and it was the next day April 20th Hawaii Valley would get another record this time with the time of 609 like his last run this runs footage cannot be found but it is assumed that this run saved time over a luminous record due to more solid movement in the overworld and a cleaner dragon fight the record would stand for 3 days until the 23rd when Mac would beat this time with the first ever sub 6 of 5:57 small movement optimizations combined with the solid dragon fight is what made this run possible but again there was definitely still improvement to be made about a week later Hawaii Valley would get a 5:50 like most of these runs it was really just better movement and crafting that gave him the edge over Mac's run this run would stand for nearly three months and toe French runner math ox would beat it with a time of 529 on July 20th 2019 this run was already ahead of the previous world record by quite a lot due to his fast crafting and precise movement in the overworld he was behind his previous PB but then this dragon fight happened it immediately looked bad because of how many pillars there were and how high some of them were looks can be deceiving the first time the dragon charged him he got a decent hit with a bed but the dragon immediately started healing with a very high crystal luckily he was able to hit this crystal after knocking out a couple more the dragon charged him twice in a very short amount of time and he got great hits on the dragon both of these times leaving him with a dragon fight that lasted only about a minute and a half after this run was completed Matthew noticed that a reroute was probably possible because of how out of the way you had to go for the second herd of sheep after some testing and looking around Matthew found a spot with the iron you would need for the run right by spawn there was also a sheep herd nearby allowing you to skip shearing the first and second herd of sheep that was far away this also removed the chance of horses spawning and causing a reset also because you were still in the taiga you would get the additional wood and leaves you needed from there rather than running to this far away tree in the swamp this overall would say between 15 and 25 seconds in the overworld when done optimally the first world record they used this route was a 513 by none other than sizzler on January 30th 2020 who had come back to the category after use of inactivity in the SSG speedrunning scene commenting that no frenchman can keep this canadian down you can see in this run just how much time he saves in the overworld compared to math ox 529 other than that the run doesn't save much time anywhere else I also want to note that it was around this time that runners would start using crystals on low pillars to deal damage to the dragon in addition to the normal use of beds if the dragon would charge you when you weren't on a pillar the time could still be pushed down a bit more and people knew what the good dragon fight sub-5 would definitely be possible after weeks of grinding attempts the game would finally be pushed down below 5 minutes but who would be the first to get sub 5 well on February 10th 2020 Illumina would have that opportunity [Music] let's go so far some 5n give time sub 5 with an extremely solid overworld section due to his crazy crafting abilities he entered the nether already ahead of the previous world record killing a blaze much quicker than Caesar did put him even more ahead after making it to the end the pressure was on Illumina we need an amazing dragon fight in order to clutch out a sub 5 even with all of the pressure on him Illumina clutched out of 456 the grind to sub 5 was not easy but all of the hours he put in would finally pay off with this amazing run Illumina notes that in theory saving time was possible in the end with really good rng but that it was still one of his better runs this run was truly amazing and nearly untouchable with this knowledge and the desire for finding new seeds after the community theorized that trading and killing the dragon without beds was going to be the new meta runner crafted Ark set out to find a new seed in May of 2020 he originally searched for seeds for the SSG peaceful category and ended up finding a very good pre 1.9 s SGC an important distinction to make because the leaderboards are now split by pre 1.9 and 1.9 plus runs because of the huge differences between the versions the catch with this seed was that you couldn't use beds to kill the dragon and you had to use crystals making the run much more difficult and so as runners do when a new seed is found the record is dropped this time to a 448 by sizzler [Music] [Music] the run was great despite him accidentally throwing his I offender he got from trading with a villager which lost him a significant amount of time despite this though the seed was fast enough to give him the edge of her aluminous wrong things to note in this run include not only the obvious villager trading but also the end portal which has 11 eyes in it like I said before 12 eyes wouldn't be beneficial because pre 1.9 portals with 12 eyes would not light another note is how small the end island on the seat is that is what makes bedless reasonable but still difficult only a little while later on June 10th sizzler would once again beat his world record with the final time of 4:35 with the time saved that he had from the last run he was able to cut 9 seconds off from his previous PB oh it's not really what I want but we'll take that and that's where the SSG record stands as of the uploading of this video overtime efforts from the speedrunning community and the CD funding community ultimately led the category from something too daunting to attempt to the first run being attempted in 45 minutes and 28 seconds and finally after five official seeds being used a four minute and 39 second round completed by sizzler all in the span of over a decade if it hadn't been for the efforts of an Visigoths and the small community that existed during 2014 who knows where the game would be now well 4s is she the answer isn't exactly clear so let's go back to 2011 and try to figure out the answer to this question for a different category remember when I first mentioned the idea of a set seed category well originally not everyone was on board with this idea some people wanted to speedrun the game while keeping the inherent nature of the game intact a new fresh experience every time while it would definitely be an orangy fest many thought of it is more of a pure experience keeping notches initial vision while also beating the game as fast as possible without the use of glitches this is the story of that category this is the story of random seed glitchless the story of rsg has very humble beginnings starting in japan at this point rsg was not popular outside of japan but in japan it was a very different story here it was massively popular and definitely the most popular category out of all of the ones already established although remember that at this point SSG was not run by anybody during 2012 runs were done by various Japanese runners and we know that these runs were completed because videos on niconico existed them however we do not know if these were world record at the time and we do not know who did them because their page does not exist anymore in addition Japanese runners at this time and for years to come didn't really highlight their runs just having a past broadcast that would be deleted in two weeks and only viewable with nigo premium was proof enough world records did get highlighted though and there is a minority of players that did highlight the runs and thanks to that minority we have these first few runs of not only the RSG category of minecraft in general the first recorded run we have was done in 352 56 on January 26 2012 this and the next runs available footage is only from the very last part of the run so we have no guideline on what type of strategies were done during this primitive era of rsg we can only assume that runners were getting a safe amount of resources to prevent death while killing Anderman for enderpearls during the night time after this run On February 3rd 2012 our run was completed with the time of two 1204 all the time saved here is probably just a combination of luck things like more ender pearls dropping from Enderman there for last night's hunting them more villages desert temples a closer stronghold etc but again this is all speculation another run that may have been world record at the time was a 123 15 on April 29 2012 bike rivetti unlike the previous two runs there is footage of this entire run so we can take a look at what runners were doing at this time when they got a run going with a good seed basically the runners at this time were just beating the game as fast as possible listen I know it sounds stupid obviously that's what you do when yous be around a game but that's all they were doing at this time there were no definitive strategies involved at this point other than gathering all the materials needed to beat the game along with some additional safety resources that probably weren't 100% necessary but that was fine because there was no need to be super optimal yet the category was still in its infancy as the times were coming down so were the chances of getting a good run going this was the obvi dilemma of the category it wasn't us at seed so you couldn't use routing changes to optimize your run and because it was very different every time you could only optimize your crafting and movement to a point where you could improvise it Japanese runners would continue to do run stuff one very notable name is taro kitchen who you may remember having the SSG record in 2015 but right now in our SG we're still talking about 2012 his first world record of this category was of 109 o2 there is no proof of his run on the internet so it's impossible to go into detail about what he may or may have not done taro would beat his own record on August 15 2012 with a final time of 58 16 with footage one thing I'd like to point out about this run is crafting and movement you'll notice if you watch taro craft it's not fast of course that's due to a few things one is the lack of fast crafting techniques even being possible in the game at this point things like clicking the hotkey of a spot that an item isn't to quickly move it into the crafting table wasn't even an option and you couldn't even lis distribute items over certain spots like you can today in addition to being limited by the game taro also didn't have a sense of urgency to his crafting or his movement as there was really no need for the added stress and a category this unoptimized an rng based it seems that at this time multiple stone swords and pickaxes were made probably to avoid having to put down a crafting table at an unnecessary time in the event that they break once night fell the time was spent almost entirely hunting Enderman preferably in a desert because of their high respond rates some minor strategies were used to kill Enderman like using nearby creatures to deal additional damage one main reason for this run and other runs length was that it would have taken multiple nights to get enough ender pearls to be safe going into a stronghold in this run tyra spends the second day going to the nether to look for a fortress to go blaze is that he got fairly lucky with one somewhat close by and then exited the nether the second night was used to start figuring out the general direction of the stronghold and to kill more Enderman during the third day tar went to the stronghold and into the end to fight the dragon he only spent about five minutes doing the fight which was pretty fast for the time and also utilized bed even during this primitive stage of Minecraft speedruns this was the basic route that all runs previously would follow adding on a few more nights for more resources and what some future runs would do as well it was safe relatively easy and mainly relied on good RNG it would take Tarr nearly eight months to beat his record again on April 2nd 2013 with a fine time of 49:28 cutting off almost 10 minutes a big reason for this time save is being able to utilize the second day to find the stronghold because of a much faster nether section and then going back up to the surface to kill Enderman during the second night like before another nine months later Tarr would beat his own time again with a 47:59 on January 31st 2014 general optimizations overall and faster movement is what helped him drop his time down by almost a minute and a half on March 8th 2014 Tarr would drop his time even further this time down to a 40507 with faster overworld travel putting him over a minute and a half ahead of his previous record going into the end in addition to another slightly faster dragon fight Taro's long reign in this category would be interrupted by a fellow japanese runner named whatta when he got a time of 43:23 on April 4th unfortunately it seems like the video has either been deleted or made private so there's no accessible footage of this run currently however it should not be understated how big of a deal this was Tarr had such a firm grasp of this category for nearly two years now thanks to his great understanding of the game and how to work around something new every time well whatta was able to defeat the king of Minecraft thar wouldn't let his parade be rained on for long though eight days later he would take his record back but not by one minute or two or three but almost an entire six minutes with the final time of 3743 how is it possible to shave so much time of an already very solid run luck with an amazing amount of Enderman spawning in the desert in addition to good luck with them dropping ender pearls most of the time Tarr only had to spend one night hunting Enderman this obviously saved a significant amount of time over the previous record but this time saved came with a price the only way to realistically beat this run and all runs after it would be to get equal or better luck than this run more attempts and more grinding the story of a strategy that could have avoided a huge amount of this luck is an interesting one for that very reason it could have been a strategy in January of 2015 about nine months after Tara's previous record in which time no new records were set a runner and twitch staffer named lout lot first came up with the idea of something called tower strats by the American community that yes did exist but it was still very small these strats mainly took advantage of two mechanics in Minecraft the first is that mobs will despawn when a player is greater than 128 blocks away from them the second is that upon death the player more or less teleports to their spawn point which is either the spawn chunks of the world or wherever they last slept assuming the bed was not destroyed the combination of these two mechanics would lead to the runner setting the spawn point on top of a tower at least 128 blocks in the air with the bed coming back down to the surface after the mobs reset and killing nearby Enderman if there were any in the case that there are none or after they finish hunting the Enderman that were down there the runner could simply die and spawn back on top of the tower once again resetting the mobs on the surface and repeat the process until getting 12 ender pearls this significantly decreased the amount of rng in the run and made it so that getting all 12 ender pearls in one night was nearly a guarantee but like I said before this could have taken off like I stated multiple times before the category was really only ran at a high level in Japan the way that the Japanese leader boards were structured was by difficulty essentially all prestigious runs were done on hardcore mode this was for no specific reason it didn't save time or lose any time it was just cool to do think of it in the context of Super Mario 64 speedruns all top runners planned in tendo 64 rather than we Virtual Console or emulator this provides no inherent advantages it is just what has silently been agreed upon by the community in the case of Minecraft playing on hardcore presents a huge issue with tower strats that being the fact that you can't respawn with the Japanese wanting to stick to tradition in addition to deaths being penalized in races which were very popular around this they rejected the method and continued to do normal strats this didn't stop everyone though a runner named dice would do the strategy in a race while there is no footage flout Lots accounts of it confirm that it did happen in fact this tweet from dice translates extremely roughly to Prince method which is what they called it in Japan because they called dice prints out of respect for him even with the extremely small minority doing the strat it quickly died off because of everyone's disinterest and it wouldn't even see the light of day outside of Japan and would eventually become forgotten about a year after his previous record on April 12 2014 tar would get a 33 30 30 once again demolishing his past world record the time save in this run was from an extremely close stronghold in comparison to the last run in addition to this he was able to hunt Enderman for only one night and this was starting to become the standard as movement and strategy evolved over time again this was an entire year after his last record this would be a common theme as his next record wouldn't be until nearly a year and a half later on September 18th 2015 another common theme seemed to be beating his records by multiple minutes at a time because this runs final time was a 2755 the first sub 30 and by far these huge jumps in time just goes to show how much RNG this category has how hard it can be for rents to get going and how unbelievable Tara's skill was as we always need to ask ourselves what was the time save here well this was the first world record to go to the nether during the first day previously the nether was entered after hunting Enderman the first night but as the category became more more of an orangey fest it just seemed that resetting more seeds in order to find one with all the important resources you need like iron diamonds and gold was worth it during the downtime between getting all those resources and night time you could just go to the nether if runners didn't get a close fortress at this point it was just a reset so with entering the nether on the first day rather than the second tarah was able to enter the end 5 minutes before his last record and have a good dragon fight unlike before it would only take Tara a few months to beat his record again on November 26 2016 the run started off not looking too promising only getting 6 under pearls after hunting Enderman however Tara decided to continue the LAN and it paid off in the stronghold he found two under pearls between two chests giving him a total of eight ender pearls to make in two eyes then he miraculously came upon the portal with a 1 and 46 chance of having 4 eyes already in it meaning that he could make it into the end after a couple of missed bed hits and cheating death taro managed to clutch up this insanely lucky run after this record three years would pass without a new world record but they wouldn't be three years wasted during this time some extremely important things were happening in the community the first of which being the explosion of Minecraft speedrunning specifically rsg in north america alumina who you may remember being a world record holder for SSG was the main runner for the west during this time coop rsg was also getting massively popular and a huge period of discovery began for the category during this explosion a runner named sea skull found a really interesting truck that would involve going on top of a really tall mountain entering a bed to set your spawn point and then jumping back down to respawn mobs sound familiar that's because it is this was the primitive stage of terraced rats in north america however this was a rediscovery as the main innovator and optimizer of the strategy see skull had not known that something like this had already been theorized and done before because like I had said tower struts were forgotten about outside of Japan because of the lack of communication between the two communities so moving on while keeping in mind sea school knew nothing about tower strats in Japan he realized that mountains would have obvious advantages and disadvantages the advantage was that it was pre-built and quick but the disadvantage was that they were often not tall enough as he would need to be 128 blocks hide to de-spawn mobs and they were rare this led to the idea of pillar hang up the first tower he used involve dropping Enderman 44 blocks he anchored them first and caused them to fall down the drop with him this is the fastest way to kill Enderman averaging around 16 pearls per night in a good area while maxing around 32 ender pearls this was named rapid pearl tower for organization purposes while it is still the fastest way to obtain pearls it had a flaw in single player runs it took nearly two minutes to dig the 44 black drop in 1 minute and 30 seconds to pillar up 128 blocks initially Cisco considered pillar and 128 blocks first sleeping then dinging a one by one down 48 blocks but that also had an issue it would require that he sleep first and that the time benign had he done this and then dug the hole he would have wasted time digging while he could have been hunting Enderman the second flaw was that RPT required building at 7:30 in Minecraft in game clock if he started later mobs would start interrupting him because of this there wasn't usually time to go to the nether to get rods and come back before 7:30 which deemed to be too difficult and it would probably take years of grind to get the insane amount of orangy would need to pull this off it would be more worth it to hunt Enderman the normal way and reset if you didn't get pearls fast enough another important note about the strategy is that to keep the pearls from desponding he jumped down the 44 black hole and picked up the pearls right before he died to refresh the timer here's a video of c school doing rst and getting 12 pearls in 15 minutes and 39 seconds showing off everything I just mentioned as you can see he first starts digging down then building up his tower also putting everything into chests beforehand so he doesn't lose it when he dies then a bet is put down and entered into to set a spawn point and he then drops down into the water he placed then he goes down and builds out so that he can agar end him in that are farther away he lives some to the midpoint then drops him down the hole and then goes down the hole itself to reset the timer of ender pearls with all of these things in mind a new strategy would need to be developed to make tower strats worth it sea school had done hundreds of hours of testing and routing to develop a tower now referred to as world-record tower that would finally save time this was his plan [Music] reset until you could get diamond and iron from a villager temple grab at least 128 leaf blocks wool feathers and wouldn't even get to the nether as fast as possible to get rods exit before 9 10 to start building the tower the main advantage of this tower was the removal of the 44 block deep hole cutting off nearly 2 minutes and 10 seconds of building time our PT took 3 minutes and 30 seconds to build or world-record tower only took 1 minute in 20 seconds to build back to the video sea school started building the part near the bottom where he would hunt Enderman he would place laps down and then leaf blocks above it and outside of this little structure he plays blocks so that he could jump back in and know their mobs could then he starts building the tower up placing ladders near the bottom in order to break your fall instead of water like an RPG after entering the bed to set his spawn point he jumped down a grits of Enderman and placed a ladder here this ladder would prevent skeletons from shooting you and prevent creepers from seeing you because he can move up and down it to adjust your height this was a small addition but extremely important nonetheless and very easy to understand in addition a small abaca was added to die quickly in place of the 44 black deep hole another advantage of this method is being able to keep better track of the amount of ender pearls you had it was harder to know how many pros you had with the RPG because you would drop them right after picking them up upon death with this method you would get around 8 pearls before you start hunting on foot while heading towards the location of the ender dragons stronghold area and then killing the dragon even though Cisco would prove to the community that tower strats would remove lots of RNG from the run its efficiency was questioned due to the amount of time that it would take to build the tower and the amount of resources needed to pull it off to once again put in perspective how hard it was to get a run on world-record pace with tower strats you would need at least 6 iron from a village or desert temple for tools 3 stacks of leaves beds chickens gravel a decent supply of food then build another portal gets 6 blaze rods and come back all in under 10 minutes and that doesn't account for the world generation requirements like having a nearby lava lake a desert at spawn that is relatively flat another fortress close to your portal and much more this tower will be a true testament to run his overall skill of the game and their patience with how much they would be willing to reset as if the category was already pretty optimized and bringing down the record minutes at a time just wouldn't be realistic anymore with that drats however with all the effort there was a reward with traditional strats it was lucky to get nine pearls a night but with an optimal tower runners could frequently finish before the nights ended with 12 or more pearls the tower also proved to be much more reliable and removal out of the runs on G Cisco would also go on to optimize a lot more things during this era of discovery like a consistent way of creating another portal quickly this is often how you'll see it done in random seed because it works for any lava pool with any shape here is sea school building a portal using his method [Music] so now the years 2019 RSG single-player and co-op has become massively popular in north america with many runs pulling hundreds of thousands if not millions of views on YouTube this was also the time that minecraft speedrunning as a whole was blowing up but RSV was proving to be especially popular with all of the previous threats in mind who would be the first to break the record if you guessed ro that would be an extremely good guess but you would be incorrect it was actually a ukrainian runner named billy day who had sort of came out of nowhere he had been running the game for almost a year but dropped his time done from before t3 to a31 and only a few months which is impressive considering it took taro years only three days after this 3138 august 7 to 2019 Lea would claim his first world record with the final time of 25 36 without the use of tower strats this runt had very good RNG with pearl drops and after getting destroyed by a skeleton he was able to look for the stronghold overnight this run had the potential to kill rsg but after throwing an eye of ender that breaks he decides to dig down where he thinks the stronghold is after digging down to bedrock with no luck he gets back up and does another eye of ender but loses it in a mountain he decides to just dig down again and luckily digs right into the portal room of the stronghold which happens to have two eyes in it with this near two minutes of time loss it was totally plausible that given the same dragon fight this run could have been a twenty thirty a few days after this run tar would be on the run of his life easily on 24 pace but unfortunately while fighting the ender dragon this happened probably as a result of the nerves and pressure tarah was under he accidentally clicked the bet causing it to explode and him with it this was absolutely heartbreaking for him and the community and after this run we would sadly see him essentially retire from the game with this runs unfortunate ending the world record would stand until November 27th when lead a would drop down his own world record to a 24:56 this time using wrt proving that it was a world record viable strategy this would save him quite a lot of time allowing him to start looking for the stronghold sooner he managed to dig straight into the portal room and have another solid under dragon fight even with the bad pillar orangey he got clutching out a new record that would stand for the next three months now enter Illumina the world record holder for SSG but not at this time alumino story is pretty great because he ran the game for so long starting around 2014 and was always at the cusp of World Records he didn't get the world record for SSG until April of 2019 and wouldn't get the world record for rsg until 2020 despite his years of grinding but these years would pay off in both categories and on February 13th 2020 three days after his SS G world record alumina would get a 23:53 holding both records simultaneously for the first time since taro in 2015 while this run was amazing it was another could've been scenario you see the stronghold was directly underneath a luminous wrt not predicting this he ran in one direction for a while in order to prevent possibly wasting eyes a vendor only threw another one it brought him back to his tower if he didn't run all this way he could have gotten a significantly lower time assuming an identical dragon fight this easily could have been a 20 minute run and that's where the world record stands today for any percent glitchless as a whole from something too daunting to attempt to the most optimized categories in the game any percent glitchless has had an amazing story of the highest highs and lowest lows the community came together when things were looking grim as of the game died down in popularity and then suddenly boomed in North America and to where it is now the discord has gone from a few hundred members to a few thousand members in the span of only a year and a little more and thanks to the recent explosion of Minecraft as a whole it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon the future of Minecraft speedrunning looks bright the end is nowhere near [Music]
