who knew that we could make a Ford frame look good we're crushing barriers and stuff all over today it's a new day in the shop we're starting back on a new project we're working on the onx Build Challenge if you'll remember we're working on our 59 wheelies wagon as you guys have seen in previous videos we' went and picked some parts up we picked a airport tug up we picked a frame up and today we're picking Chad up yep so Chad is my partner in the onx Build Challenge so together we're hopefully going to get this thing done by October we got a lot to get done so we'll get going parts off need strip full of fuel tank I was looking at it and it almost looked easier if we just cut it right there cuz that puts it about where it kicks up yep the how much is the back half how much do we got to build uh it's only 106 in wheelbase so the wheel rear AEL will be about right there and then overall length somewhere there then we need to bring that airport tug in here and see if we can figure out what that is really fast I'm hoping it's a 4 L ofu Merlin claims it's a 4 L we sent some pictures to him before we bought it get the tank unbolted land pull all these bolts let's drop it out of this thing we'll cut the exhaust off of it we'll get the stuff out of what we don't need and then we'll roll this over and wash it it's been a hot minute [Applause] we'll go the driveway back Chad needs to experience this we're not going for ice cream in that was that was enough last time we got [Applause] it oh man [Music] [Music] doesn't seem like a true to me but yeah it's hard to say driveway Dr wow don't notice until until go suspension yeah it's it's not big looking no all right I'll take a picture of that so what we're doing is we're trying to determine if this is the motor we really want it might be a 2 L and if it's a 2 L that's not going to work hey I am uh I'm looking at an Isuzu diesel motor how the heck do I tell what it is it's in an it's in an airport tug my phone said it was a four cylinder it's a four cylinder that's what it says on the airport Tu diesel motor says four cylinder good job Grandma I don't think that's going to do anything that this plate probably won't help him a bit no but that's how I found this these post saying every one of them say it's an an onen l423 there saying this is a predecessor to the inline or the 4bt no uhuh this was before cumin bought oning so when cumins bought on they scrapped all of these motors and destroyed all that's what I'm but I'm not convinced that's what it is wow look at that makes the makes the frame look a lot more manageable take it over to pressure washer all right that's that today hasn't gone so swell we found out some things that we may not like may not get a diesel motor in it I don't know we're waiting to hear back from industrial to see what we can do with that little motor so it's not looking [Music] [Music] good all we're getting all of our Barnes Parts unboxed see what we got so we can change the suspension in this thing oh yeah yeah that's beefy man that ought to that ought to not break probably be able to let you and sea drive this thing and test I think with the current power plant that we have for it you can push it as fast as you want true be like Landon push faster exactly then we going to come start putting these together need a jam nut and a tube adapter on each one of those it's time we're pulling the wheelies over to do some measure taping the boat seat and everything I think this better stay I think you should be the one in here Chad I got to be video you guys how did he convince you to help with this whole thing that was pretty easy I'm pretty Gable he just called me and said hey I got a terrible idea you want to be a part of it that that I said yes sign me up all right that's what I always do so awesome Yep it's still there still just like I remembered it so basically what we've got to do is figure out how long the frame needs to be where the humps need to be in the frame and then start cutting this Frame actually it doesn't really matter where the hump is too much so if we took 10 in I'll bet it' be good cuz it's 81 there but we could slide the back yeah this still be fine where we're just doing length so 10 in out of the middle of that I think so let's see we just need so 106 so that'll be axle Center Line right there yeah we may need a little closer to 12 or 13 to get that back where your axles yeah cuz that should put our axle here if we took 13 out of it yep now the age old question question zcut straight cut with a diamond butt weld what's your preference on a frame weld Chad on something like this where it's not going to have any weight on it I'm sure we're going to get all sorts of hate mail on there are but go ahead and comment on your favorite one and make sure you point us in the right direction but but M on something like this I would butt weld it Diamond it and he is right up my alley that's exactly what I'm think and box it on the inside and it'll be perfect it'll never have problems it will never have a problem I mean if we were to turn this into a roll back with a tonn of load on it that's a whole other story exactly but on something like that there is no reason to do all the other work a zcut you got to do a whole bunch more measuring everything a straight cut we can just plasma this thing in half grind it up weld it back together so that's what we're going to do here go ahead and leave your comments tell us if we did it wrong or if you think it's going to hold so how are you deciding where to cut it well cuz are you looking at the cab and you so we know the rear end it needs it needs to come up for the rear end to clear okay so we obviously the right here is where wheelbase wise the rear end will be so we want to move the rear end to back here somewhere so we're going to cut 13 14 in out of it whatever we decide is right to move the rear end to here otherwise we could just cut it off where we needed it but when you bump up the frame's going to hit the pumpkin or not pump with axle tubes and where here you're going to have five more Ines of clearance than you have here yep so that's the the gist of it so the leaf springs are going away the back will be four length with a coil spring and an airbag you all remember my airbag Extravaganza from the FJ and it's still don't get under that we're going to repeat that well sort of I hope a better repeat than what we did there and then the front I think we're going to put ois on the front get a straight edge in a marker yep what are you doing what the you made Dutch oven yeah what' you make some so we cooked some croads they were really good you caught croads caught seven you ate them yeah them up made you some taters yeah you guys are self-sufficient Mound men I know I'm telling you what tell me if I did this right like lobster let's he so I caught the cads and then we put them in boiling water and then they turned very orange yeah yep and then I put some butter in there it's probably good usually you catch CH Cad and you put them in fresh water for a few hours and pour some salt on them we do that and then you take them out rinse them put them in some more fresh water clean them out and then you boil them well they were good get a little Pond taste with them I'm sure a little extra spice smell you guys from a mile away ni we're eating our catfish too eight eight from that hole you guys stink they're fell into the tasteful no I'm not no it's not a cotad it's the potatoes they're really good the quarter I'm in a quarter how do you rate it this is our this is our second batch the first batch was our best one not yeah a little bit too much butter but 1 so good for just some lone boys cooking I think we're good yeah all right I need drink you're about we're Within let me see I am eight I know I'm 316 so that's probably about as good as yeah we're going to be dang close to exactly the same okay that was easy that is easy now all we got to do is do it once you start cutting then it's all over you just go for it yep are you sure they're in the same both in the same spot we're pretty close we're pretty confident I didn't I didn't like double measure Chad site or anything my sight's perfect do you have dyslexia Chad cuz Paul definitely has it sometimes we might there to the center of that is 57 and an8 I think I read that wrong you can't trust someone with dyslexia to give you the right answers most of the time but we might be his next like in the same direction so you oh that's awesome yeah we're about to find out we are it looks like it's in at least the same zip code so we'll call her good hey wait you sure about this I have a ground oh you don't have a [Music] ground I got a ground now he thought he was going to scare me he did it backfired where're the kings of that around here he thinks he's all not my first day in this shop someone goes for the firecracker pile I know what's about to happen happen here corner of the Box on the left hand side not exactly the most quiet people I hate you literally hey we're all going to stand around and watch him [Music] yeah we're pretty close got some clamps y can you see yourself in the in the camera oh [Music] nice looks good good well he likes you more than me he'll let me film a whole day like that and I'll go to the bathroom some like what the crap that put us where we want to be all a tape maze or something accumulating over here 106 that's going to be right where we want to be right yeah we'll have to do some changing on the end here but the end is going to be right in that range somewhere we're in a good spot [Music] [Music] [Music] okay she's going nowhere [Music] all right frames welded together now it's onto the back end so we're just going to go for it I'm going to cut the UB bolts out and drop the rear end out of it and then cut these off and then we're going to cut it off right here yeah and then we'll build a four link set [Music] up we're in is out L take the shocks off and you can roll this rear end out of here roll it backwards now unbold all the crap off the rear end all this stuff move it to the side then we got to put the little truss that's up there on it you get ground up and we'll weld it in do you need practice I'm good plasma cutting ah got that one perfected you're good on that yep I don't believe you you need [Music] practice that thing yeah that's not buding just cut some that's kind a/2 inch off the front of it and it never WIS I don't think it is I don't think it's budge in oh barely swing I may you know anybody NOP I'll cut some more of this I guess be wow I don't have a bigger Hammer than that one that's as big as we got here oh yeah there's one well for you did a good job on that those were not coming off of [Music] there there you go got him now just cut out all the other times he was swinging that's right one time that's all we need on there y this Hammer Will Make A Man Out of You [Music] it's shorter that's good or bad but it's shorter so going back now yeah it's too late now not fixing it all right so we're on to the rear end we're going to trim all the unne necessary parts and pieces off of this thing put this truss on it from Barnes we'll go ahead and roll it under there if you guys are buying Barnes Parts be sure and use code Fab rats save yourself some money when you're buying them [Music] so we're in that range I guess think that's where it's at something like that clish that's a cute little stubby frame right there yes it is all right we're to this point we're going to weld this uh truss on here a little bit roll it under the truck and get some links all figured out we're giving Hunter a a trash portion link design today so if it doesn't work it's Hunter's fault cuz he's the teacher you don't want to have one I I mean we can try if you want all well to you well too all right my first one's terrible I got got holes in it that's about what mine's going to look like so you there's a chance there's a chance I'll weld this one better okay you have no effect on [Music] me yeah there's no point that's pretty good yeah but you got you that's one if you do two mediocres does that beat one good one Chad hey for the right bribe absolutely see get your helmet so here's a here's a question while you're getting dressed why did Paul welds the truss before he welded it to the housing it moves it from the heat it definitely moves moves yep no pressure yeah expect too much that's a big gap right there that's a that's not a big gap that is that's not sounds good it looks good no it's not bad it's not great it'll hold it's not bad why do yours look like more like a bead than mine because you are not holding it steady enough you need to use your other hand instead of instead of holding the gun with both hands put one against something and rest it on it I see they take care of all that mountain de you drink yeah there's no way you're steady enough to keep it and then it shows any time you wiggle just like that one there yep so the basic problem is you're moving too fast down yep so when you're welding downhill like this you want to start welding and the puddle will tell you how fast to go you'll see you'll see it start to pull up and start to roll over a little bit that's when you know to keep moving down those hole they'll yeah they'll they'll work that'll work just fine let's welder to the to the housing [Music] here if I go to the tread right here is that the in the one that STI oh yeah so that the one that sticks out I'm at 9 and 3/4 10 and a half easy to 10 10 and an eight yeah perfect I come off of ball joint yep what did we need to be at roughly roughly 106 but that was just a oneman measurement so for whatever that's worth 106 is is right there probably outed two mad measur we probably ought to just to make sure that yeah we got someone to blame when yeah things go wrong we'll use your tape you you hold on to that end are you guys using the same tape measure anyways uh I don't know 106 is a good I like it okay 106 is I'm happy with that perfect come on Hunter you've been around this long enough to know that we're definitely not professional when it comes to reading a measuring T that is true story what did I do I measured that wrong evidently maybe we should take away my building abilities today maybe we did already 14 in is the short side that's what that is why am I oh seven you're uh dyslexic pain in my but but we do things like nine times cuz we measured it eight times wrong well those are Nifty little brackets they are were you here for the FJ you weren't I built these very brackets each one took me like an hour all right there's finished product two of them that are directly directly opposite probably going to have have to be at the bottom that's what I did too get our right yep gives us a little bit angle down just like that guess we probably had to s a stick a piece on it pack it doesn't look terrible as we can run that bracket out as why do we need to that's going to give you 30 in so I think we should about 32 so somewhere in there little more right there okay that's going to be that looks pretty good on that's going to be 32 in so let me put this over where we want it and we'll get our a measurement of our tube 24 in of tube give these a couple of tacks right we're figuring this out here tall flanks are mocked into place they're looking pretty good on angles Chad's figureing 106 in wheelbase getting it set pretty close and we'll tack those into place then we'll put the bottom links in it tack those into place and if we like everything we'll go ahead and weld it down we're winning this morning we're back at it dad's measuring rear links up top or bottom ones I'm going to weld these top ones into the frame and uh with any luck this afternoon this is a roller chassis so see what we can get done six right there that's probably a good place to start right we got we left some pretty good adjustment in them still yeah I think that's going to be yeah you're like you're like seven right now I'll get these frames tacked in all right that's tacked in all right we're cutting the lower tubes we need 34 in of tube all right we're off to the store to get some bolts and uh maybe a cup of ice cuz it's hot already outside all right we made it to the Bold aisle do we have what we need 96 16 you seen any oh right there 16 right there 4 in oh we got them we're in the chips all right we got our bolts we can go uh weld this thing together now all right we finally made her back to the shop we got sidetracked and had to go get us a cup of ice and a little bit of Coke in there to flavor my ice but we'll go back to work all right we're to the tack in mockup state we'll get these ends in it go for it one down so what we're doing here is we're making sure these links are the same length that will Center our then we can measure and get it Square basically so we know they're the same length now now we can go to put it together [Music] yep frame just saved my life that going to SA hat yeah yeah that's for getting me out of bed this morning that's right that thing was coming straight to my heart those are going to be pretty flat yeah they're pretty flat how much angle we want on these right there it's not terrible I think that works just fine for what we're building here tack it on there I'd say it's right uh somewhere hey right there we just got these and we still have some Miller stuff that's not completely wore out have a hard time throwing it away until it's junk So eventually you'll just see us wearing these that's it not till I wear all that stuff out first one's easy we don't have to do a whole lot of measuring for it just make sure we're centered where we need to be the second one we got some [Music] measuring who knew that we could make a Ford frame look good we're we're create or we're crushing barriers and stuff all over today yeah we get this front atrocious Situation off of it this thing will look good do I want to square that up with the frame or leave it kicked a little bit um if I kick it a little it'll be easier on the angle on the joint yeah I don't see why you can't kick it a little think I'll leave it kicked like it is rear suspension is in it well the links are in it we'll set pinion angle make sure it's where we want tack those down and then we're going to put Leaf bag or Leaf Bags airbags and coil springs on it so here we go I don't know something like that would probably work oh it's so close it is that's when you get the hammer out the hammer will make things close it's the great it'll make them work there you go look at that we got it it works oh po what oh who did that who did that oh oh no let me see the camera I'll show you what we're griping about this was a rookie mistake if you'll notice one of these is not like the other this one removable this one permanent doesn't come out cuz the yeah it's our first day in the shop what can I say I'll go ahead and cut those welds off and we'll take that out switch it nothing like doing her twice oh for [Music] sure it'll probably need to be out like that to clear the spring and then we could put that plus with the bottom of the frame we could go dirt head da style and put them up in the links I think this will be for what we're building here it's going to be just fine yeah we put airbags and bump stops on it all you would have to I mean the airbag is not going to fail no it's going to be the airline so if we just had uh one of those fittings yep we'll have onboard air that may be the ticket yeah it would definitely make life a little easier a lot of these parts that we're using on this build are repurposed and used because we're on a budget so you'll remember the airbags from the FJ old PS may break and it might crash to the ground that's oh that's that's what you talking that's what I was talking about I don't know what to do also the air bumps right right there Fox air bumps those are used I bought them used when I bought them for my FJ project and now they're going to get rolled into the onx build so repurposing all kinds of things we're going to repurpose the spring shackles or not shackles spring perches they're going to be the air bump pads using all kinds of stuff whatever we got that we can stay under budget so we can win in this competition don't forget to go vote for me and Chad we need all the help we can get as you have witnessed as we're building this we need help onto the front project now we are we've decided we need to build the front so that we can set this thing at full squish so we know where ride Height's going to be it's hard to build at ride height you want to build it at full squish so you know everything works right so what we're doing now we might be able to go another inch down so yeah and we might be able to leave all the yeah I think we can we're better than we anticipated yeah we're just getting lucky it's about time we were unlucky there for that first 6 hours yeah yeah we were but so this thing was going to be Diesel power but things have fallen apart the motor that I sort it's not going to do what we needed to we're hoping we can come up with one but if not we have a 60 that's perfect for the budget it'll be good for what we need you probably look through the wheel see there oh there's a rotor right there looks like we're let's get the phone out look at that you can see it right 1.5 1.5 is what we're at not much 4.2 Sharpie in my pocket still I got one want to ride on that somewhere you know why we ride on that so you know we're old we're old we don't remember anything yeah we got the CRS pretty bad that is the only reason we were young like you we can remember it forever we're going for it see what we can do don't tou that it's hot I bet Chad's cutting away here getting these mounts all taken [Music] off he'll get them links are going together we'll have this so we tore one side off got it pretty much tacked together we'll mock it in place then it's just a few hours of finish welding to get this thing all done and waiting for some more parts to show up to work on some more all right she should stay okay that should be it those look so much better they do son of a gun they're going to be the right length look at that scrap pieces that's what we Ed for those I think that's basically full boat so we're good I'll pack those in there yeah I mean if you're going to off-road it a whole bunch if you're going to twist it articulate this is probably not the best setup but that's a big joint it's going to last fairly long time yeah it'll be durable and yeah predictable and yep my Dakota had this set up on it I beat the crap out of that thing and only ever changed bushings a couple of times y so we'll do the other side and this thing's got suspension St yeah thing in get it permanent life slide it over about 3/4 when he's done welding right there's so freaking close good enough for me getting it warm I dare you to touch that land I a touching that we're getting there kind of warm when you're in this thing welding away here yeah it is there we go he just need to grab a the 10 I'm still just welding away here and then we're going to take the tires off to get the insides but not today all right this thing's built last couple of days we've got a ton done on our onx build so frame is pretty close to being ready for a body at this point so with any luck next time we work on it we'll have the old Willies setting on top of the Superduty it's going to look good it's going to be a little wide we're going to have to build some fenders and stuff but we're going to get that done we'll still tackle the motor problem I don't know what that's going to look like yet but we'll get it but uh don't forget to vote for us go to onx onx challenge vote for Chad and Paul cuz well it's going to be a Chad's Fab and Fab rats because we're going to win this thing Robbie's currently in the lead you can vote once a day for free so every day jump on there and vote for us so thanks for watching
