today we're going to talk about one of my favorite pieces of kitchen kit the stanley base camp adventure cook set and why i think it's one of the best kits in the market to get you producing great food in the outdoors coming up [Music] my name is drew and this is evergreen overland on this channel we showcase 4x4 vehicle modifications we hone our outdoor cooking skills and we do reviews on camping and overland gear like the one we're going to talk about today i do a ton of cooking when i'm out camping and exploring the list of equipment and supplies and all the utensils and stuff that i use when out camping in the truck is pretty extensive and you can take a quick look at most of that in this video right here the stanley adventure full kitchen base camp cook set is one of the cornerstone pieces to my whole cooking system and it's one we're gonna go over today let's go ahead and grab it out of the kitchen tote and start to talk about it a little bit more in depth all right well here's the kit that i use and have been using for a couple of years now to do pretty much the bulk of my cooking with i stumbled across this kit initially by seeing it over at expedition overland and i thought it was just a really cool looking kit that kind of gave you all of the essentials you would need to cook and serve up some good food while camping i decided to give it a try for myself so i ordered one up they're about 80 on amazon right now i'll throw a link in the description section below if you want to click to buy it it would definitely help the channel so what you'll see actually on the outside of here does not come with this kit this is a pot cozy that i made out of a material called reflectix and it's basically like a sheet of bubble wrap that's been lined in an aluminum foil and it helps just insulate i make these for a lot of my cups and little cook pots and all that kind of stuff for backpacking so i just took what i did in that realm over to kind of a more full or midsize application for cooking out of the truck what i primarily use this for is keeping food hot in the stanley pot when i'm waiting for the rest of my meal to finish up cooking just throw it in there throw the lid on and that'll stay good and warm for a decent amount of time for sure hey throw a comment down below if you want to see a video on how i make these so this is a 21 piece kit it's really pretty high quality for what it is nice medium sized pots this is a 3.5 liter pot here all stainless steel construction it's got the lid with your little drain holes here which is great for you know cooking pasta or rice or whatever you have in that kind of realm and then and using the lid as a strainer so you can dump out the excess water that's super nice nice little lid what's cool about this lid is it kind of gives you a run down exactly on how you would repackage everything in this so but this gives you a constant little reminder schematic of how things should be loaded into the pot these handles they're super simple it's just you know some bent pieces of stainless but but these handles are nice they give you a really good purchase when you're holding onto this thing when you open up the lid the first thing you'll come to is the three-ply stainless steel pot with the collapsible locking handle how that basically goes is you just push it into place and then slide this little retention beam down that makes it so that you can't depress this accidentally when you're cooking and collapse the hand i definitely forgot to slide that down before and when you go to you know flip some eggs spill everything everywhere so make sure you get this kit lock that down this is a super super nice kind of small to medium sized fry pan and it's got a really heavy duty base to it honestly you can kind of see where they basically have increased the thickness of the material down here and that just gives you just a more even temperature for cooking all across the surface of this that's one of the trade-offs you usually have on lightweight setups whether they're stainless or titanium is that they're really thin to save on weight and that isn't the best for cooking because you really want heat retention and that's hard to do when you're building really light weight this thing's been an awesome little fry pan and it's been plenty big enough for me and my wife so getting a little bit deeper into the pot you come to your four plates and your full bowls and kind of nested in between those it's pretty cool pretty ingenious they have a couple of utensils so let's go over these plates first they're a little six inch round plate um pretty small but i was okay with that originally just you know limiting portion size and all that kind of stuff and you can always go back for second helpings i really like that they all mess together but one of the things that kind of fell flat for me on these is you know when you're doing a steak or sausage or whatever it is that you're going to be kind of using your pocket knife to cut uh i found that the plastic material on this you know it just scarred up and cut like really really easily every time i drug a knife past it and i don't know if you're gonna be able to see that very well in my eyes it just wasn't you know super great for the longevity of the product but that wasn't my primary concern it's more so when you have all these little micro cuts in plastic like this they're just a place to harbor bacteria so although i used these for quite a few outings i actually have since traded them out of my kit and went with a little bit more heavy duty aftermarket plate so typically snap together utensils i'm not a big fan of um gsi makes some and they're cool i like some of the products the engineering behind them is really cool but usually you don't get a super great connection and they're flimsy these using like a little buckle which is kind of ingenious actually give you a pretty rigid utensil that doesn't want to come apart on you and stows away really small for when you need it to i've taken this up with me to do eggs and a little pan backpacking before and i use this spoon that it came with almost every time i cook so these are actually really cool utensils and they're holding up great so far you know it's plastic i'm sure it's got some heat safe capabilities to it but be careful don't leave this on a pan sitting on heat or anything like that you got to be cognizant of where you're putting this stuff now on to the bowls again four pieces for a family of four kind of a thing i keep these in the kit still i really like them actually i'm just noticing that on the bottom of the bowls it has that same uh stamped in order of how things get loaded into the pot that's kind of cool since i'm not using a knife in this and it's just going to be a utensil i don't have the same breaking down and the same bacterial worries that i have with these guys here just use these for kind of everything i mean obviously obviously serving food in for sure but also doing mixings or scrambling eggs or whatever it might be these are a cool little bowl these do travel with me in my kit what you have at the very bottom is this cool little setup here if you open it up now i only have two of the sporks that this kit came with or i could only find two i'm sure the other ones are in one of my other backpacks but the kit comes with four i like them i've used them a ton they've got a little bit more of a fork to them like a little bit more prong than typical sporks do like your titanium ones and all that kind of stuff i like that you're actually able to grab things with them and it's great to have these an option especially in this little starter cook kit i've used them a ton okay so one thing that i have completely misplaced and cannot find is uh this little like rubber trivet pot holder it's just a little piece of flexible like rubber material typically gets housed in here it's to help hold the sides of the pot when it's hot or uh set it on when you're not when you're trying not to burn something pretty cool little thing to include in the kit like this because prior to having that i was constantly burning my hands on whatever piece of pot or pan that i would grab so it's nice to have that and avoid some of the injury so this little guy here nice little cutting board i use this primarily for cutting limes and that kind of stuff fruits and fresh vegetables small jobs i don't cut any meat on this typically just cool to have a secondary cutting board and this right here it is the bottom part of this little pouch carrying compartment thing that's built into the system for holding some of your utensils that's cool but what this also is and is pretty ingenious is just a little drying rack for all of your plates and bowls never fails in a rush to put away all my stuff i will inevitably wait till the end and not have things dry because they're stacked up together this just gives you an awesome little way to separate all of your bowls and get them drying so you're not getting a musty mildewy mess when you put them away for storage pretty freaking cool well we already kind of talked about this pot a little bit um it is again a 3.5 liter stainless steel again it's got a pretty thick little base to it so decently even heating not quite as even as this but decently even heating on this what's cool on the inside you have marker points for a one liter and three liters and this little middle line is two liters just gives you some different measurements to use for when you're cooking which is cool to have and other than that you know there's not much to it it's a pretty good size you could do quite a bit you could do a couple of boxes of pasta in this you could do you can cook enough food in this easily feed a family of four it's not overly sized it's not this huge stock pot i wanted something that was kind of compact neat and tidy and wasn't gonna be overkill for the amount of food that i cook on on the trail realistically this whole kit did just that for me close it all back up here ah this one's kind of goofy actually it's really hard to drop it in the first time so if you just bounce it all together it'll sit flat there you have it there's a rundown and a review of my stanley adventure base camp cook set i really do love this thing i think it's a really awesome starter kit for anybody who wants to kind of just get away from bringing their pots and pans from home and also not be too bulky this thing stores away really nice you know like an 11 and a half inch approximately by like seven inch tall little footprint here it works really great with every single stove that i try using stanley also must have recently released a new one of these for 140 bucks that comes with a sauce pot so i think you get three different cooking pots or pans whatever you want to call them pots and pans and i don't know that it comes with the place settings the plates and bowls and spoons and all that stuff i might give that a try just to test it for comparison's sake i'm also gonna you know take a look at some other options down the road i think there's a lot of manufacturers in the over landing and car camping world that are starting to really innovate some of their products i think they're finding that there's more of a market for that happy medium not necessarily as lightweight as you need for backpacking but also not as heavy duty as you might need at home there's a sweet spot in there that i think a lot of manufacturers are starting to produce products to hit that mark i really appreciate you watching the video if you like this video and want to see more like it please hit the subscribe
