so i forgot to cancel my quibby trial so that means new video and for those who are still unaware quivi is one of the many new streaming services but this time with a twist because quibby is short for quick bite as in quick bite entertainment as in we're gonna take shows and movies and cut them into four to eight minute episodes and release them to you daily because everyone clearly wants that perfect for your extended bathroom trips what could have possibly gone wrong a lot it it turns out it's it's a lot couple weeks ago we touched on dummy and before that i did an entire video about quibby just kind of what it's about some of the shows on it and why it was struggling so much to find an audience and today i'm blessing you with murder house flip the home renovation show for true crime enthusiasts but before we get into the video i am exceedingly excited to announce that this video is brought to you by expressvpn my first ever sponsor so i look up a lot of really messed up things for some of these videos shocking i know how can my browser history be anything other than innocent when i make videos about things like splice in 365. but thanks to expressvpn i don't have to worry about my internet history being tracked while i look up the weird things i do for videos and you don't have to worry now either i know you might think that using incognito mode or clearing your browser history might keep you protected but it doesn't your internet service provider can still see every site that you visit expressvpn protects your privacy while you browse online shop and other things you might not want people to know about like tracking down and reading the original 50 shades of grey fan fiction and they do this by encrypting your data and rerouting your internet connection through one of their many server locations whether you're on a computer a laptop tablet or phone expressvpn has got you covered so if you're interested in the wide variety of services that expressvpn has to offer feel free to click the link in the description down below or head over to expressvpn.com jedi to find out how you can get three months free so back to me being an idiot who forgot to cancel quivi so you may remember from my first qibi video that they had actually offered up three months free for anybody who signed up for the service before the end of april and even with that their anticipated download numbers were significantly under what they anticipated and their active user numbers were even lower by early may they had reported about 3.5 million downloads but only 1.3 of those downloads were active users they did say that the downloads have increased to about 5.6 million but there's no word on if that applies to multiple devices and it automatically installed quibby on my phone even though i signed up for it on my ipad so if it's counting every single download including something like that rather than just counting individual emails that have it downloaded that's obviously going to result in different numbers but either way it seems like the numbers were significantly under what they were anticipating and again this was in a time where people were home more than ever desperate for any kind of content to entertain themselves and they had a service that exclusively worked on the thing that people have on them at all times featured shows made by some of the world's most renowned and popular actors and creators and they still couldn't keep people interested for free because again this platform model kind of sucks in a world where binging content is becoming the standard since netflix just started dumping entire seasons in one go getting 4 to 10 minutes of a show or a movie a day is just not remotely what anybody wants i don't feel that level of fulfillment with like the 4 to 10 minute quibby bits because i tried a handful of shows after they were completely released and it still felt incredibly awkward watching them at this point dummy is the winner and it still suffered from all those issues i've just mentioned and went completely off the rails in one episode in a direction i just cannot follow justin will you please just keep my sex doll cause a lot of these shows are sadly really great ideas but for what has to be the thousandth time quick bite versions of long-form entertainment is just not desirable short form online content works for a reason when you have major talents and big budgets people expect more than these five to ten minute blips of content and i think honestly at this point your user base has shown that because my god did it ever get worse when i first made that qrivi video that three-month trial was still very much in full swing but it's officially starting to run its course and quivi has reportedly lost 92 percent of those early users the second that trial ended that means potentially eight percent of people decided that they wanted to actually continue their paid memberships again this is only accounting for the people that would have signed up within the first three days which is about 910 000 people but i don't know call me a skeptic but i don't really anticipate that getting any better and as bad as that number sounds it's apparently not that unusual uh disney plus apparently only managed to convert 11 of its first three-day trial users but the big difference there is that disney plus was downloaded by 9.5 million people in the first three days and quivi was only downloaded by 910 obviously there's a huge difference between a new fresh platform and something with the name disney behind it again i have a lot of complaints about disney plus and disney in general but i would still pay for disney before i paid for quibby but quivi is also struck back at these numbers saying that they're seeing excellent conversion rates to paid subscribers and they're very happy with it but this is also coming from the same people who flexed an 80 episode completion rate your episodes last at most maybe 10 i think some of them might even stretch like 15 minutes but for the most part it's five to eight minutes on average typically an episode is over before i even realize anything's happened so it's really not surprising that you have high episode retention rates and of course we have to take into account the fact that there's probably a lot of people like me that just forgot to cancel before the free trial ended so it's really hard to say how much of those converted users actually want to be paying for the service because i i know that i i don't want to be so i don't even know if we'll even get anything close to legitimate quibby numbers for the next few months like we gotta wait for the last of these three month trials to run their course give people a chance to see if they do want to sign up i would say by like october we'll probably have a more realistic account for qibby numbers but all that aside i figured we'd take one last look at a quibby original one that has plagued my mind since i realized it existed and stumbled upon it murder house flip which is exactly what it sounds like it's a renovation show for houses that had people murdered in them murder and makeover don't usually go together but now that's all gonna change look i love true crime i love fictional crime but what the [ __ ] is this this is essentially a concept that would be a passing joke or a parody moment in another piece of entertainment that was given the thumbs up to become real like remember how darya had six sad worlds what deadly new diseases can you pick up by sitting down toilet seat terror next on sick said world i can just imagine this being a passing segment in the background before they get back to what happens in the episode itself and while making this video i realized that this was in fact a joke with one of the staff writers for stephen colbert six years ago my executive producer tom purcell who watches way too much hdtv thought of it while trying to imagine the worst home renovation show he could and as a parody show this honestly could have been incredible like can you imagine how far they could go with this in a situation where it wasn't real like the level of commentary on how far reality tv is gone and the constant need to one-up everything oh my god what happened the murderer's still in the house except this just is legitimately the thing that's just one-upping it's honestly a little bit surreal so before i get into my thoughts on the show itself i will just kind of clarify a few things one obviously living in a home where you know someone was murdered in is going to cause you some level of distress legally it has to be disclosed to you in california if it's happened within a certain amount of time but oftentimes the fact that these houses are so much cheaper are hard to pass up when you've got people who are just trying to make a good life for themselves and those people deserve to be comfortable even if they are living in a murder house like for example in one of the episodes there's a girl who had literally for the better part of her entire life been sleeping in the same bedroom where a little girl was murdered finding that out as a child is obviously going to mess with you like as a child you can be told that there's a ghost in your house as a joke and you would probably take it incredibly serious so to know factually that someone was murdered in the same area where you sleep that's probably going to cause some problems and even as an adult it's probably something that's always going to linger if you know so being able to renovate parts of your home and having like a mental cleanse of sorts would obviously be helpful even though like switching up your kitchen appliances doesn't change the fact that somebody cooked another person in your kitchen and cooked her on the stove right here yeah i get it it's a mental thing so on that front they're providing people with some peace but on the other hand if it kind of feels pretty gross like i love true crime as many people do i consume it to varying degrees right now i've been watching a lot of that i'll be gone in the dark which is all about the golden state killer based on this incredible true crime novel of the same name i enjoyed mind hunter which is loosely based on the true crime novel by real fbi agent john douglas it's just a thing that captivates so many different people and that's that's okay because like many others i am just fascinated by the depths of human horror but taking the very real murders of people and blending it with an hgtv style home renovation show where it actually becomes that stereotypical upbeat style show we're going to use a board and batten technique to redo the facade that way we can turn this murder house into the beachy dream home oliver and chelsea are looking for feels extremely weird and very tonally conflicted the creators even commented that they couldn't be too earnest with it but they also had to be careful not to be disrespectful but at times they could have fun you know if you're talking about a young girl who was murdered by her own father like maybe you should not be having fun with it like they're jumping back and forth between like ellie i hope there's no blood under here and hey what kind of grass do you think i bought to put here all that topped off with the super serious true crime narrated intros this may look like an ordinary house but 32 years ago it was the site of a hollywood tragedy what is it nothing and i'm scared of my way it's just a very big disconnect so featuring california's infamous serial killer landlady murder house flip is comprised of 12 episodes and four houses each house gets three dedicated episodes the first episode is always a setup of what the crime was how the homeowners feel how they came to live there which area of the house they feel harbors the dark energy or just where the crimes were centrally committed or just where they feel like renovating honestly and then it immediately just jumps into being your like stereotypical upbeat renault show what if we do like a garden all throughout the rest of the perimeter i think that's super cute i already have an issue with a lot of reality tv and i feel that this just blends some of those worst aspects together and honestly because these episodes are so short i don't feel like i'm getting anything out of them they're not going into enough detail about the crimes in a way that feels educational or adequately addressed and they're not going into the home renovation aspect enough for that to feel like it has any value either so at the end of the day i don't even really know who this show is for and even in moments where i felt like they did something good it still kind of feels weird in one episode they're renovating a bathroom and find what they believe is blood under the floor and then use a bunch of different compounds to properly clean and scrub down the area which is awesome for the homeowners but it's just like two minute thing where they're huddled up over some ripped up linoleum spraying hydrogen peroxide on it waiting for it to bubble that's definitely foaming up right there again i get that there's some definite positivity in helping people find some kind of peace in the homes they live in but they advertise it all in such an upbeat way that there's just a disconnect and i'm not the only one who thinks so obviously when the show was announced you had a bunch of people being like oh my god this is like the perfect show for me it blends my favorite things but a lot of people found the show to be tactless disrespectful and highly exploitative and i can't say that i blame them again when an idea works better as a parody then as reality maybe you should like rethink your show model and when you're dealing with something as serious as murder maybe actually give the appropriate amount of time to deal with the topic properly but hey i guess it worked out for them because quibby is on the hunt for more murder houses for season two which i guess has kind of been a little bit of a challenge for them executive producer star price is quoted as saying that it was a challenge finding houses where crimes took place that were interesting at some level as tragic as they were you probably could have left that out just left it unsaid anyways and it was difficult to actually find homeowners who were willing to take part in the show and they also just started knocking on doors where they knew someone had been murdered can you imagine someone knocking on your door and pitching murder house flip hello kind homeowner i have heard that a brutal murder has happened here and we would love to feature you on our brand new show about flipping murder houses it's so weird i also find that the last house that they deal with takes a hard flip into the supernatural territory every homeowner mentions some kind of like energy and maybe some weird things happening but this house has the whole package we got an imaginary friend that has the murderer's name we got lights going on and off garage doors opening cold spots bad dreams is dealing with one of the most notorious murders of a child actress at the hands of her own father very heavy stuff like incredibly heavy and again i get that growing up in this kind of room would be pretty horrific for a child and would definitely affect them growing up so renovating the house helps bring peace to her and her parents that's great but at one point they actually make a joke about that imaginary friend who was allegedly the murderer grabbing a hammer and helping them with the renovation if your little friend joseph climbs from up under the bed i'm gonna give him a hammer cause he's gonna have to help me put some things together and as nice as they make this one look nothing is going to take away from the knowledge that a little girl was murdered in that room honestly they seem a little bit better with exterior design versus interior design but it's fine this episode also goes in a direction that i'm just like really not a fan of we get we get healing crystals which again studies have shown like with most placebo things if you believe it to have some kind of effect it will likely have that kind of effect but i do think there's an insane amount of hypocrisy on people who enjoy using these crystals and how they're sourced but hey if you think it's gonna help the girl find some peace have at it how about this one hmm i don't know if that's gonna pop enough so that was the final house which makes sense it's the most notorious the homeowners were the most seemingly affected and they hadn't actually been informed of the crime before they moved in like i feel terrible for this man he just wanted to like make a nice life for his family and a good house in a good environment and like he deserves it they deserve to have a nice chill life but i honestly think one of the other houses agreed to be involved in this just so that they could get their fireplace fixed they do talk about feeling energies and odd things happening but it all comes down to this fireplace that had literally already been renovated since the murder in fact the entire room had been renovated since the murder actually the whole exterior of the house has been renovated as well so if the last renovation didn't do anything why would this spread i don't i don't know but i get it this thing looks like some kind of weird mausoleum fireplace i'd want it gone too and this thing is not my style at all it's cool girl play it up get rid of that hideous thing i also think in this episode they amped up the rumor that like the murder weapon had been hidden in a safe that was inside the fireplace as if the police wouldn't have checked for that or that when they did the first renovation they would have come across it but again like if it makes for good tv like go for it yeah i was like spoiler alert there's there's nothing in the fireplace there's there's nothing there there's nothing back here i do love this older couple from the first episode though they're just living their best life in a house where a landlady had murdered tenants and buried their bodies on the property and they've just been living here for so long that it's mostly chill they even sleep in the same room where she had been storing some of the bodies she would put them in what is now our bedroom they seem great and by the end i feel like the people who benefited the most was this couple where they actually did potentially find blood in an area where the killing had happened so that was good for them getting that whole bathroom renovated because that just means it was all the same stuff that was there when that murder happened so i feel like that was probably the most positive change that occurred but that's pretty much the show i can fully understand why some people would love this why it would be right up their alley and i can also understand why some people find this completely exploitative and disgusting just from a quality aspect i think it suffers from exactly the same problem that every other qibi show i've tried watching does and again that's quibby's format the episodes are just way too short it's supposed to be a blend of two of the most popular types of entertainment and it doesn't feel like it's a representation of either of them so equippy managed to bounce back with their renewed marketing campaigns and their announcement that some of their more popular shows have been secured for second seasons or do you think they're just dragging out the inevitable let me know in the comments section down below also if you watched this show did you enjoy it did you hate it were you kind of like me and just indifferent props to people who got the renovations but i have no desire to watch this show when they continue it but that's going to do for today's video thank you so much for watching thanks again to expressvpn for sponsoring this video information down below thanks as always to my patreon supporters subscribe to the channel if you're new leave a like on the video if you're into that kind of thing i hope you all have a fantastic day and we'll catch you all later
