hello and welcome to monster of the week the only show on the internet that covers D and D lore like it was some kind of weird homech project and that is exactly what this week's monster is the stitched Devil is a truly horrendous use of sewing skills blended with Fable Arcane magic but they're made by nigh haags so what do you expect as always we're going to go over this creature's lore and ecology as well as the creatures abilities both on and off the battlefield then we're going to convert it from Third Edition into fifth edition DND and go over some Hooks and other ways you might actually use it at the game table so try to hold yourself together because it's time for monster of the week stitched Devils made their one and only appearance in the monster manual 5 for Dungeons and Dragons Third Edition released in July of 2007 this was the last core monster book book to be released for Third Edition because less than a year later in June of 2008 the infamous fourth edition DND D would hit store shelves knowing what we all know about fourth edition now and its poor reception it definitely sets a different tone as you're flipping through these pages but all that aside today's monster managed to sneak in at the 11th Hour of third edition's time in the Sun and I'm glad for it because it's a pretty interesting creature that is much more than the sum of its parts so the reason you're here what is a stitched devil well I'm glad you asked as their name would suggest they are fiends from the nine Hells Devils if you can believe that though where most other Devils are birthed from unfortunate mortal Souls these creatures are stitched together by nigh haags unlike their cousins nigh hags are the only members of the hag family tree that are not Fay but fiends this is due to the fact that they are into some magic so messed up that even the other hags were like you got to go man do me a favor please get out of here get out of here man so instead of the Fay wild they make their home in Hades and in Hades the nigh haags have actually carved out a nice little niche for themselves as Soul mongers they excel at stealing Souls from Mortal creatures and then of course trading said Souls as currency to the Devils of the nine think of it as a fish version of American Pickers we are rolling large man Frankie and I are freestyling and we're looking for a place to rock up on now they trade these soul for all kinds of different stuff but something they are always on the lookout for is body parts specifically the body parts from slain Devils devil corpses are tough to come by for several reasons for one if a devil is killed anywhere other than its home it doesn't leave a body behind it instead disappears in a puff of smoke and respawns back in hell so in order to leave behind a body it must be in the nine Hells when it dies secondly because of the nature of battle in a place like the n Hells often there isn't much left of the deceased fiend it's very likely that when a fiend is killed their body will be completely destroyed by Magic and if it does leave a corpse it was probably killed by a demon or something equally as brutal which is then liable to eat the remains after the fact also there are all kinds of alchemical and Arcane uses for fish body parts so the nigh hag isn't the only one in the market to find such things all of this is basically just to say that devil body parts are not easy def finded and when they do show up on the black market they're going to be a lot more expensive than you might think but as mentioned there are lots of reasons why a nigh Haag might want to collect these body parts but one thing I can do which is kind of what today's video was all about is use those body parts to create something new a stitched devil literally by sewing the body parts together in a Frankenstein esque fashion the nigh hag is able to give New Life to what was once just a mish mash of Limbs and organs this not only creates a new new powerful fish creature but it also binds that fiend to the nigh ha's will and what follows after the stitched Devil's creation is one of the most disturbing and most hag things I've ever seen in DND D see stitched devils are constantly in a tremendous amount of pain this likely has something to do with the fact that their body is held together by Magic thread but they are a creature that should not be and they know it and the primary motivator of the stit devil is that pain or rather the desire to be free from it so a good nigh hag is going to be promising her Stitch devil pets that she can cure their pain in order to ensure their cooperation some nigh hags will literally Dole out soothing magic as a way to keep their creation loyal convincing them that only the nigh hag has the means to alleviate their constant Agony and that is super up in some cases they don't even dull out the soothing magic they just use the promise of it to keep the stitched Devils on the payroll essentially because even if they don't actually do anything for them it's not like they can just leave in such cases a stitched devil is likely to seek out other means such as death to alleviate its constant torture while it can't directly disobey its creator it can be very reckless in battle and put itself In Harm's Way with the hopes that someone else will end its miserable life especially Resolute Stitch Devils might even turn on the hag who created them and try to create situations where the hag is killed thus freeing them to pursue another means of ending their constant torment without death keep in mind while this creature's existence is bound to be truly awful it is still a devil made up of devilish fish components so an act of malicious compliance is hardly outside the realm of what a devil is capable of in fact it's exactly the kind of thing a devil might do to get out of a bad contract as unwillingly found itself in but speaking of what this creature is capable of let's move on and talk about what it's capable of in battle stitched devils are horrifying enemies to face in battle not only are they a ghoulish representation of a fiend which is already a pretty scary classification of monster to be up against in the first place the constant state of pain causes them to fight like Berserkers with little care for self-preservation as far as physical attacks go the original 3.5 stat block gave them a bite and Claw attacks but I felt like we could do something a little bit more interesting here the creature in my fifth edition conversion still has its bite attack which I feel is pretty self-explanatory but I split its two claw attacks into two distinct melee actions because I figured most of the time this thing's going to have two mismatched arms right so let's assume that it has one massive limb meant for crushing stolen from a beefy devil and one slender claw limb meant for slicing to reflect that on my stat block you'll see that instead of the claw attacks it has a crush and slash attack the Crush attack deals 2d6 bludgeoning damage and has a chance to knock the target prone while the slash deals slashing damage and rolls 2 d8 meaning it's a bit more dangerous but the most dangerous thing about this creature by far is its pain Aura as a magical being they are gifted with a sort of empathetic bond between them and anyone else nearby whenever a creature within 30 ft of a stitch devil takes damage from any Source it takes an additional 1d6 damage of the same type this is due to the fact that the mere presence of a stitched devil increases the amount of pain experienced by all those around it now this extra damage can be mitigated by a constitution saving throw but that extra damage will add up fast especially against effects that hit lots of times for small amounts of damage such as magic Missile also being the creation of a hag this creature does have some innate magical abilities attached to it it can cast both detect magic and Misty Step at will and once per day it can cast to spell magic as well as blight the biggest change I made to this creature on the magic front is that in 3.5 rather than Misty step it had the ability to cast a spell called greater teleport teleportation magic was a whole different beast in Third Edition D and so I figured for our 5e conversion it was a bit much for a cr8 monster but hey if you want to give your Stitch devil teleport by all means and honestly that's kind of the beauty of this monster is that because of the weird history behind how they're created each one can be as similar or as different as you want it to be I would think of this stat block as sort of a base version of what a stitch devil is often likely going to turn out as but maybe a hag in your world is fond of attaching the stinging tail from bone Devils to her Creations or perhaps a particularly successful hag has managed to get parts from some truly massive devils and has created a huge version of this monster or on the flip side maybe they've used parts from imps to create little winged Devils there's a lot you could do here and we are talking about hags so incorporating some weird out of the box ideas is definitely not above what a hag is typically going to do cuz I mean theoretically they could have a complete corpse that they chop up and then restitch back together and the creature would look kind of the same way it did when it was alive except it would now be all strung together with this magic binding thread and essentially function as a version of that monster under control of the hag and that's just kind of horrific in its own different way but regardless of what kind of stitch Devils you decide to create the next question is how do we Implement them into a d and d game so let's talk about [Music] that hags are known schemers and certainly not above manipulating other powerful creatures and maybe it's just me but I feel like a particularly ambitious nigh Haag might go about creating some of those corpses herself but if she were to just Waltz into the nine hells and start picking off devils here and there eventually someone would take notice and you really don't want to get noticed by anything living in the nine Hills however if say she was able to create a situation that resulted in lots of devil corpses being left behind that could in no way be traced back to her that's a different story see there's this eternal battle raging at the borders of the nine Hells in the abyss between the demons and Devils it's been raging for eons and the history of said war is so long and bloody it's deserving of its own video It's called The Blood War for a reason but all you really need to know is that the aply named blood war between demons and Devils is a thing and it often results in battle so massive in scale it's impossible for a human to imagine so if a nigh ha were to say open up a rift between the abyss home of the demons and the nine Hells home of the Devils thus forcing the Devils to defend themselves and creating a lot of corpses in the process that nigh hag could very likely collect a tremendous amount of body parts from the battlefield between waves of demons pour ing through the portal now of course the Devils would be extraordinarily pissed about this but that's only a problem for her if they know that she's the one who opened the rift in the first place and an adventuring party could fit into this plot in a lot of different ways maybe they're helping the hag because she's promised them something of value in return after all why do they care about a bunch of dead Devils or maybe they're helping the Devils out for the same reason there could be multiple portals opening up all over the nine hells and the party has been tasked with tracing down the origin of what's causing these errant portals to show up if you've got a pack of the fiend warlock in your party that's just a slam dunk all this talk of corpses brings to mind yet another creature one which I've talked about on this channel way back in the past that did ultimately get a conversion into fifth edition appearing in morn kanan's to of foes The cadav Collector this monster is a construct built for the express purpose of collecting bodies from Battle battlefields so perhaps a nigh hag managed to either build or get her hands on one of these things and uses it to get body parts for her devil creation Factory the party could kick things off by encountering a cadaver collector on some old Battlefield in the nine Hells or maybe even a group of them and then if they choose to follow them back to wherever they're coming from and investigate this sort of story lead it might lead them right back to the nigh Haag or maybe you've got a crafty artificer building these things to collect parts that he can then sell to The Hags in exchange for powerful magic items or maybe even soul coins that he can then trade with the Devils for all kinds of neat stuff all I'm saying is if you're planning on running a game that heavily features Venture capitalism the devil corpse Black Market of averess is a great place to start and I mean there's also nothing that says the creator has to be a nigh Haag nigh haags are just the ones who invented the process but they very well could have sold the secrets to a mortal willing to pay a good price probably their soul or better yet perhaps the secret was stolen from the nigh hags by a wizard intent on making their own Creations maybe your adventuring party is tasked with stealing the secret formula from The Hags and the weirdest heist in hell ever seen and then this wizard intends to use the secret formula as a jumping off point for their own research into making Stitch Devils out of mortal body parts I mean sure flesh Golems already exist but this would be something more something sentient something with a life force attached to it and something truly horrific or maybe the party simply finds themselves aligned with the plight of the Stitch devils and they vow to help them become free of their torment one way or another but however you choose to use this monster I want to hear about it so let me know what your best stitched devil plot hooks are in the comments down below and also feel free to leave a comment about any monster from a previous edition of D and D or another tabletop game that you'd like to see converted into fifth edition and who knows you might just see it show up on the channel and if you do want to make use of this fish quilted creature Linked In the description down below is a Google Document which contains everything you will need to successfully run this creature at your game table and of course if you are one of my lovely patrons over on the dungeon dad patreon page you can find the highres PDF stat block that contains all the same information but it's presented with the new artwork and a little bit more of a curated look they call that that's the thing people say right and speaking of patrons it's time for patron of the week this week's randomly selected Patron is Captain Mark thank you so much for supporting me from the high seas it means the most and
