[Music] yo Steve if you don't hurry I'm gonna open up all your stuff I heard you open some of my presents and got these sunglasses but are there any more things for me well this one says to Andy from Santa who's that Andy is an annoying blue puppet inside of my videos you're him I know that who's Santa you mean you never heard of Santa the man in red the guy who got me these sunglasses nope Kris Kringle negatives father Christmas nope nope nope nope nope st. Nick oh wait oh no I so don't know who that is well then I guess we need to learn about the history of Santa Claus the legend of Santa Claus can be traced back over a thousand years ago to a bishop named Saint Nicholas oh you better watch cuz I'm Saint Nick I mean Nick alas I messed up a little bit it's believed the Nicholas was born in modern-day Turkey okay guys I brought the turkey I didn't have a bag so I had a carry it with my hands I hope you don't mind oh you meant turkey the plays I'm sure I'll go back over here he came from a wealthy family it was known for being extremely generous and kind and became the subject of a bunch of legends it said that he gave away all of his money and traveled the countryside helping the poor and SiC hey old dude you look real sick man you want some turkey and some money would that make you feel a little better what's this kid reading over here watch over many years see Knicks popularity spread and he became known as the protector of children and sailors and over time st. Nicholas became the most popular Saint in all of Europe children sailors what a weird thing to be ashamed of what would you be the saint of no well sinister bird and sailors are taken I'd be the saint of the free Costco sable I'd be the scene of I'll stop talking anyway a popular story of Saint Nick explains why he comes down chimneys and why we hang stockings from them I was thought stockings were weird here's a small prison you don't want I just put it in this smelly sock by a really hot fire legend has it that many years ago a poor man had three daughters the daughters wanted to get married but he didn't have enough money to help daughters not because I loved them but because I want some of them little baby hot dogs they always have their right so one night Saint Nick secretly dropped a bag of gold down the chimney and into the house so one of the doors could get married the bag fell into a stocking that had been hung by the fire to dry the dad was shocked and waited by the chimney to see who was giving the gold I bet you it's that Easter Bunny guy the father eventually caught Saint Nick dropping more gold down the chimney and he had him arrested for trespassing yeah stop talking Nicholas begged the dad to not tell anyone what he had done because he didn't want to bring attention to himself keep this little secret between me and you maybe I'll let you have a little bite of my turkey right here but soon the news got out and when anyone received a secret gift it was thought that maybe it was from Nicholas mommy who is this present from he said from that weird bald guy who carries the turkey what was the data sailor no what about the daughters no why you said he was the protector of sailors but I didn't hear anything about that well that's another part of his story that's actually pretty cool there's a story that tells of Saint Nick helping some sailors that were caught in a really bad storm oh my gosh we're gonna die everybody pray quick Barry look at your telescope and see if anyone could come help us hey mr. sailor face Oh No all the men were terrified that their ship would sink beneath the giant waves so they prayed to Saint Nicholas to help them suddenly he was standing on the boat he ordered the sea to become a sea chill out man why so angry the storm died right away and they were able to sail their ship safely to port what about it I mean come on do you know many people out there named Santa I met a guy in a dumpster named Sandy that's kind of close the big guy in red was the legend of giving gifts in December but in the 16th century he became a little less popular people started saying that the presents to kids were coming from Christ kind an angel like child based off of baby Jesus wait a second you're telling me that a little baby was able to deliver a ton of toys babies can hardly hold their own heads up let alone deliver on ps4 well in some stories he actually had a little help it has been said that a figure that symbolized baby Jesus called Christ kind or Christ child would bring presents to children on December 24th the legend has it that he had a sidekick that helped him deliver presents and tell kids to behave sometimes called rule clause meaning ruff Nicholas ashin Claus meaning Ashley Nicholas or this guy Belsnickel meaning furry Nicholas descriptions of these characters match a lot of how we view Sansa today breaker breaker 1-9 I got a gigantic guy covered in fur who looks like Santa Claus chasing a small bay with no shoes on in an open field what do you even do over a now a whole lot of clause in those names did they not have nail clippers back then what that doesn't matter see not everyone thought of Christ kind as a gift bringer in the United Kingdom it was still popular that father Christmas or old man Christmas was the bringer of gifts they called him old man Christmas yeah what a mean name don't worry Santa I think you're a silver fox in the Netherlands kids and family simply refuse to give up on st. Nicholas as a gift bringer some of these people eventually move to what is now the United States and they brought their traditions with them they call it st. Nick Sinterklaas this was hard for Americans to pronounce so they changed his name a bit so sinter Claus was changed to leprechauns no try again Sinterklaas Sinterklaas wait that sounds like Santa Claus so that's how he got that cool name you're right Santa is a unique name but Americans weren't even set on calling him that some names they thought of besides Santa work st. a Claus st. it cause Santa Claus saved Klaus saved a Claus and Santa Claus what about his suit and stuff where'd all that come from well we owe a lot of the way Santa looks to some famous authors over time Santa Claus became popular in the United States especially me or the author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Washington Irving wrote a story called knickerbockers history of New York in the story Irving describes Santa as a short stout merry pipe-smoking Dutchman dressed in traditional colonial tyre he even describes Santa as flying over rooftops and dropping presents and chimneys was that the only one help describe Santa nope he actually had help from two other authors that helped pave the way on some of the ideas on how Santa looks and also some of the stuff Santa does have you ever heard these words before twas the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring except for that guy seen the a mint in the dumpster the author of that story Clement Moore describes Santa as a jolly old elf who traveled by a reindeer pulled sleigh and went down chimneys to deliver presents to children stockings and a cartoonist named Thomas Nest added a little more to the Santa story in the 1800s well what did he do well he took what Moore wrote and added a few more descriptions illustrator Thomas Nast I'm named after where birds live but with an A added a long white beard black boots and red suit trimmed with fur he drew santa's around cheerful elderly man Nast drawings also added some key details to Santa's backstory including his large book of naughty and nice children to watch over the toy-building elf assistants and Santa's home in the North Pole but while the North Pole well back then the North Pole was a land of always winter and I don't know about you and I think of Christmas I think of the Dempster I was gonna say snow but anyway that nass guy was pretty smart he thought to himself that if Santa was going to live anywhere it had to be the North Pole Wow so what did you ask for for Christmas mr.
