[Music] every week things happen but it's all out of order and disorganized so here on paul's tech news that information gets sorted out lightly seasoned simmered and reduced until it creates the most delicious tech news sauce that you want to smear just all over your face at least that's my goal this week intel unleashed a veritable fire hose of info about their current and future tech it's clearly meant to distract us from the mediocre early rocket lake reviews that have come out gamestop is in the news but not for their stock prices and uh as for the gpu shortage situation well what we thought was a light at the end of the tunnel might actually just be a train bearing down on us i wasn't planning on drinking for this episode but let's dig in excellent corsair has expanded their new case lineup with the 5000 series a premium chassis with three versions available the sleek 5000d the 5000d airflow and the 5000x with tempered glass panels and three 120 millimeter air guide rgb fans a spacious interior provides room for multiple radiators or up to 10 120 millimeter fans and there are tons of convenient features for building like hinged removable panels flexible storage options for hard drives or ssds and rapid route cable management guides available in black or white so click the sponsor link in the description for more intel's desktop rocket lake 11th gen core cpus launch this coming week on march 30th so intel naturally spent a bunch of time this past week talking about the other more exciting products that they've got in their pipeline it's pretty clear that intel is doing their best to flood the channel with subject matter right now to get people talking about them but if you all promise to remain cynical and unimpressed i think we can cover the more interesting tidbits that they shared so first to get it out of the way 11th gen core cpus are already out there in the wild and the 8 core 16 thread 11700k specifically has been reviewed by several outlets including gamers nexus who generously called the chip a waste of sand in some tests it is actually beaten by the last gen 10700k and although it can trade blows with amd's ryzen 5800x in gaming it is routinely outperformed in productivity tasks and it doesn't seem to have much overclocking headroom either when you factor in the increased power draw which is also hard to nail down due to different lga 1200 series motherboards handling intel's power states however they feel like rather than adhering to a set standard it becomes very hard to recommend this stopgap solution intel took their 10 nanometer architecture and shoehorned it into a 14 nanometer package with rocket lake and the results for desktop cpus just aren't really blowing people away so let's just talk about something else is what intel kind of seemed to say as new ceo pat gelsinger headed up an online presentation on tuesday titled intel unleashed engineering the future i for one am glad that intel is finally getting rid of the leash it was clearly hampering their development of viable nanometer cpus five key points were outlined in the presentation though first intel will not be selling their fabs and in fact they're investing 20 billion us dollars into two new manufacturing facilities in arizona expected to be online for production in 2024. i think that's an objectively good thing it will allow intel to develop leading-edge processed node technologies while also creating 3 000 plus high-wage jobs directly with intel 3000 plus fab construction jobs and up to 15 000 long-term ecosystem support jobs for the surrounding area the second and third points were that intel will be offering manufacturing services to partners via intel foundry services and that intel is on track with their seven nanometer product development which i'll be back to in just a moment fourthly they're collaborating with ibm on next gen process node development and lastly there will be a new intel innovation event in october 2021 being planned in the spirit of idf or the intel developers forum a gathering that used to happen two to three times a year but was cancelled in 2017. i actually attended the last idf that they held in august 2016 but i'm told that it wasn't my fault that the whole thing was canceled shortly afterwards although i do still owe them for a hotel cleaning bill now all that info is somewhat interesting if you like to follow the goings-ons of big tech companies but is there anything to really look forward to from intel that's on the horizon intel selling seven nanometer cpus would be big news so let's go back to that meteor lake has been confirmed to be the name of intel's seven nanometer cpu design and they're copying amd's chiplet method that has brought so much success with ryzen but they call them tiles which makes it totally unique and different i wonder if intel will use the same glue that they accused amd of using back when ryzen first launched to hold their chips together they'll probably just call it intel infinite adhesive or something like that to be fair though intel is planning to stack their tiles which might actually offer an advantage over amd's current design it also means stacking not just tiles with cpu cores there could be a gpu tile and maybe an ai tile in there too meteor lake isn't expected to launch until 2023 though so what's happening in the meantime well it didn't come from pat's announcement but recent posts to the intel repository as revealed by momomo us on twitter showing some juicy info in the titles about both 13th gen raptor lake s cpus and intel's xe discrete graphics cards these documents cover compatibility guidance for intel manufacturing partners but are not accessible to people who aren't under nda the document titles though say stuff like compatibility guidance between alder lake s and raptor lake s though which indicates that both will slot into the same lga 1700 motherboards upcoming rumored cpus are listed in this handy chart from videocards.com though rocket lake s of course launches next week it's kind of meh already alder lake s will be 12th gen core it's expected in q4 2021 will be built on 10 nanometer and that's the one to look forward to in the shorter term in my opinion as it will use a combination of big and little cores and likely will support ddr5 as well as pcie 5.0 raptor lake s will be 13th gen core and a refresh of alder lake on the same socket expected sometime in 2022 and then comes meteor lake s in 2023 with seven nanometer fabrication which might also be lga 1700 but that's a bit far out if intel does do three generations of cpus on lga 1700 i will totally give them credit for that while also pointing out that amd probably made them do it also amd must be sitting over there just having a drink and thinking seven nanometer in 2023 all right seven nanometer cpu launches kind of a last decade thing 2019 called and they want their manufacturing process back intel also shown in the intel repository listings were documents related to intel's upcoming xe gpus there will apparently be five versions with between 128 and 512 execution units some of these are bga designed for laptops and mobile solutions but at least one is clearly labeled as a pci express add-in card 4 6 8 and 16 gigabyte gddr6 configurations are also shown which will run at between 14 and 18 gigabits per second unfortunately though this is pretty much all the new graphics card info that has been revealed this week from intel while the xe scavenger hunt that i talked about last week did kick off on march 26th pat didn't reveal anything further while he went about unleashing intel if you're curious though the first scavenger hunt clue was niagara falls as predicted and a spoiler alert the clue for the next round is cover i'm sorry if i'm mispronouncing that but that is actually the town in india where raja kaduri was born and big props to the reddit who figured that out oh and one last thing if you had hoped that intel would be announcing a new xe hpg discrete gpu that they are manufacturing at their fabs free of the constraints that have caused shortages in the rest of the industry i have bad news pc gamer says intel's first discrete gaming cards aren't going to be made in-house they will be manufactured by tsmc on its own seven nanometer node you know tsmc the same place where all amd's stuff is manufactured where from my understanding they're a little bit backed up speaking of tsmc and the intractable hellscape that is the graphics card's market in 2021 i have sadly more bad news tsmc and micron have both moved to red alert status as their gpu cpu and memory production are now threatened by a worsening water crisis in taiwan that's right the graphics card supply chain has been impacted by a global pandemic a mining epidemic an incessant plague of scalpers and resellers and now we're going for gpu armageddon bingo as the worst drought in six plus years strikes the region where most of the chips are actually made non-industrial zones near the fabs have already had their water rationed to five days a week out of seven and as of thursday authorities cut supply to companies in two major science parks by 15 percent although tsmc itself isn't currently affected they are however running drills and setting up additional tankers to store water in case conditions get worse fortunately taiwan's rainy season is coming soon it typically kicks into high gear by may so if you've been praying for more gpus maybe pray for rain in the roc as well meanwhile asus and msi both told their investors this week that they will be increasing their gpu prices due to component shortages and the all-consuming desire to make more money some people say that that sucks because gpus are already too expensive and others say that they'll be marked up anyway with demand being what it is so why shouldn't the manufacturers make more money from their products rather than letting some ignominious scalper scrape the profits either way it sucks to be a gamer in need of a new gpu right now pc world talked to amd's scott herkleman this week and he talked a bit more about fidelity fx radeon's answer to nvidia's dlss feature that improves gaming frame rates at higher resolutions while preserving detail amd says that they don't need no stinking machine learning ai for fidelity fx though which is good because machine learning hardware does not currently exist in amd gpus what was revealed is that it will be called fidelity fx super resolution or fsr for short and while they're planning to launch it for consoles and pc gaming platforms it will likely come to pc first it's still a ways off though we still have more work to do not only internally but with our game developer partners we want to launch it this year we believe we can do that this year but at the same time we have a lot more work ahead of us so i'm interpreting scott's words here but that sounds like 2022 to me despite there being no gpus to actually buy new gpus keep launching so once again rumors of an rtx 3080 ti and 3070 ti are back scuttlebutt has it that may is now the launch window for both cards with the 3070 ti being based on the ga 104-400 gpu and the 3080 ti using the ga ga 102-225 the 3080 ti would be a 12 gig card with about 18 more cuda cores than the 3080 as well as a decent bump to memory bandwidth via a 384 bit bus similar to the 3090s configuration the 3070 ti would sport a more modest stat bump over the 30 70 if rumors are true with just over four percent more cuda cores but would gain more memory bandwidth thanks to using 19 gigabit per second gddr6x vram instead of gddr6 non-x the 3070 ti might also have both 8 gig and 16 gig memory configurations although again these are all rumors for now okay guys time to slip into some freshly laundered tech briefs so comfortable gamestop now known more commonly by its stock exchange abbreviation gme plans to start selling pc gaming hardware monitors and gaming tvs which seems like a smart idea given what a hot commodity pc hardware has been lately and in fact modestly overpriced listings for rtx 3080s have already popped up on their webstore they're unavailable right now unfortunately but some skus have shown april 16th as the for sale date so whether or not you're still holding up for a gme short squeeze like linus here's another place that you can look up gpus for sale so you can have that brief moment of potential excitement before you see the inevitable out of stock notification speaking of disappointment wouldn't it suck if your playstation 4 turned into a brick because the internal clock battery died this will happen to all ps4s eventually the battery dying because batteries don't last forever but here's the problem the ps4 needs to connect with a psn server to sync its clock and it does that to prevent abuse of the in-game trophies mechanic and if you've reset the clock or the battery died it will disable downloaded games and even games played off of a disk until it's re-synced that means if sony eventually shuts down the playstation network kind of like how they killed the ps3 psp and ps vita stores back in january all ps4s out there will eventually just stop working due to this feature way to go sony lastly though users of the beloved and multi-faceted communications platform discord were a bit on edge this week as it was revealed that the company was on the hunt for a buyer and that microsoft was high up on the list with a potential 10 billion dollar sale price of course the pc master race meme factory immediately began churning out dire warnings of microsoft's previous treatment of platforms that it has acquired but many pointed out that discord going public was a more likely move and also it seemed like that would suck way less but wall street journal followed up on thursday with evil news discord they say is in exclusive talks with microsoft and the deal could go through as early as next month ah rip discord hopefully the bing ads won't distract us too much from the skype integration but there you have it guys tech news for the week and if it all seemed a bit dire that's because it was but hey spring is here and that's nice right go outside in closing as always your feedback is welcome so please feel free to leave me a comment down below
