The Full Story of Vault 111 - Fallout 4 Lore

hold on Oh everyone please step off the elevator and proceed up the stairs in an orderly fashion no need to worry folks we'll get everyone situated in your new home vault 111 a better future underground sewer just yes up the stairs I can't believe it we left a minute later no no we don't don't get caught up thinking about that you're safe now everyone just head up these stairs and through the door there just follow the doctor here he'll show you where to go all right you three follow me oh you're gonna love it here this is one of our most advanced facilities and none of the others aren't great mind you just step in here and put your vault suit on [Music] the pod will decontaminate and depressurise you before we head deeper in the bomb just relax time for a whole new life complete the story of vault 111 begins long before the sole survivor ever steps foot into the vault but it ends when we leave the crying upon to discover our spouse I'll find who did this and I'll get Shawn back I promise from that moment the sole survivor has a new mission that absolutely consumes his or her life but that mystery is entwined with the mystery of vault 111 the mystery of what exactly went on here if I would Vulcan do this a pertinent question why would vault-tec do this can't be left hello anyone everything about this takes us by surprise when we talked with the vault tech salesman we can ask him what the vault is all about and he doesn't mention this at all I'm here today to tell you that because of your family service to our country you have been pre-selected for entrance into the local vault vault 111 tell me more about this vault oh it has all the amenities of the modern home I assure you not to mention total protection from nuclear radiation and hostile mutants even when stepping in the pawns we're told we're being decontaminated but we weren't we were being frozen but to our horror we discovered that everyone else all of our other neighbors are dead in their cryo pods how did they all die if vaulteq was trying to free is everyone how did their experiment fail but more perplexing how did we survive near to pod c2 we find a vault 111 monitoring terminal thank you for choosing vault Tec you're welcome in the first one cryogenic array offline premature termination resulting in system failure isolated manual and remote overrides detected controls disabled this one entry poses us with three questions number one who initiated the isolated manual override we get the answer to the first question before we even leave our cryopod we saw this manual override take place before our eyes this is the one here Oh everything's gonna be fine let the boy go I won't we awoke just long enough to watch a mysterious figure murder our spouse Kellogg but for some reason we were refrozen our neighbors weren't Kellogg and the Institute physically arrived here at vault 111 and manually overrode the cryogenic freezing process it isn't until much later that we learned the answer to the second question why did the cryogenic system fail after it was manually overridden we don't learn the answer to this until much later in the game while exploring Kellogg's memories I never knew why we didn't just refreeze the rest of them but we had our orders if the old man didn't want so many loose ends too bad it left alive the one person he shouldn't have so the Institute ordered Kellogg to terminate the experiments in every other pod but ours resulting in their deaths but why kill them why not just refreeze them and if they are going to kill everyone why leave us alive the third and final question is who initiated the remote override that opened our cryopod and why we learned this when we meet father and the Institute but why refreeze me as a fail-safe of course I was the perfect candidate an infant with uncorrupted DNA but if something were to go wrong if I died well the Institute realized that contingency plan was prudent another source of pre-war DNA preferably related to their primary subject it only made sense that my parents should fill that role so you were kept alive and safe within the vault I'll admit when I had you released from vault 111 I had no expectations that you'd survive out here in all this why let me out now after all this time that's well that's hard to explain certainly it was no longer necessary to keep you suspended hi well I suppose I wanted to see what would happen they killed everyone in this vault because they simply didn't need them they had the infant DNA that was all I needed they didn't care about the lives they were destroying and the only reason they kept us on ice is because we were a backup in case something happened to Shawn their experiment failed and they needed backup DNA related to the infant and it was only later much later that father personally released us from our cryopod and only because he was curious he wanted to see what would happen we learned that these events all happened at very different times we were interred into these pods on October 23rd 2077 but as father said Kellogg didn't arrive to vault 111 until the year 22 27 at that time the year 20 to 27 the Institute had made great strides in synth production but it was never enough a hundred and fifty years after the bombs dropped it was just a split second for us it had felt like another split second when we woke up to find our spouse dead but we wake up in the year 22 87 ten years after the events of fallout 3 210 years after the bombs dropped and 60 years after Kellogg arrived at vault 111 60 years so much time wasted I know and the next one life support we see the same thing the cryogenic experiment and life support were both terminated by the Institute at the same time in the final one we can learn about the pod occupants see one empty and indeed we find this pod empty I believe this can be explained by something we hear on the TV just before the bombs drop there were still empty places in vault 111 this place was not at full capacity in C 2 and C 3 we find mrs. and mr. Callaghan two of our neighbors whom we met while entering the vault then in C 4 and C 5 mr. and mrs. Abel whose final memories were being frozen the sole survivor spouse and infant Shawn in C 6 and the sole survivor in C 7 finally in C 8 was mr. Russell who likewise is dead if we inspect each person we learned that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to life-support failure the Institute callously killed all of our neighbors backing out of the terminal we can open a door to the west we arrived in a hallway and can open another door to the left here we find more cryogenic pods and each of them contains a frozen dead neighbor this room also has a vault 111 monitoring terminal in it we find the exact same terminal entries except the pod occupant status has completely new people though interestingly on the terminal it says B 1 through 6 however marked on the ground outside the ponds we see C 9 through 14 mr. DiPietro dead mr. and mrs. Whitfield dead and dead mr. and mrs. Coe Fran and Cindy cofran all dead on a sidenote their daughter Cindy is the only resident who we don't see alive in the vault before being frozen we also see another unnamed couple whom there does not appear to be room for in the vault we don't find any trace of them when we emerge but we have yet to find any vault-tec staff did Kellogg kill them all when he entered the vault if so where are their core we see the door to the exit that we walked through 210 years ago directly before us but we find that it's locked the door is malfunctioning so we have to open a door to the right into a restricted area down some stairs we arrive at another hallway there's a door to the east and we see an opening to the right this was the Security office we find a bit of scrap and a stim pack on a desk and next to the stim pack is a security terminal vault 111 security instructions confidential security I is only vault 111 is designed to test the long-term effects of suspended animation on unaware human subjects well they certainly got the unaware right they deceived a song security staff are responsible for maintaining installation integrity and monitoring science staff activity under no circumstances our staff allowed to deviate from assigned duties insubordination or interference with vault operations are capital offences security staff are authorized to use lethal force wouldn't want to be a vault tech scientist working here violate the rules and security kills you in the next one operations protocol manual we find three entries the first resident admittance upon activation notice from vault Tec all personnel are required to report to the entry area and assist with admittance of vault residents security personnel will maintain order and ensure that no personnel or residents attempt to evacuate the vault research staff will be responsible for resident intake and escort each to the designated cryogenic pod residents not accounted for in the manifest should be asked to step aside and detain forcibly by security if necessary once all residents have been sealed into their preservation chambers dispose of any detainees vault entryway must remain sealed under any circumstances so if any of the residents attempted to leave or if anyone got down here and they weren't on the list they were killed by security and disposed of in the next one staff duties we find three entries in the first science staff members of the research team must daily monitor the vital signs of cryogenically preserved residents cardiopulmonary and cognitive activity in particular must be recorded hourly life-saving intervention is only permitted if greater than 80 percent of the resident population has perished while in cryogenic suspension and must not interrupt suspension independent research is encouraged and left to overseer discretion so vaulteq was cool with 80 percent of their subjects just dying even with a staff here to save their lives they were explicitly instructed not to unless only 20% of the residents were left alive I guess the rest of us were just extras just in case something happened in the next one security personnel security patrols are to be carried out on a constant eight hour rotation security priorities include monitoring for signs of intrusion checking for atmosphere leaks settling disputes among personnel enforcement of regulations set forth by the overseer and enforcement of regulations set forth by vault-tec and the final one facilities services and maintenance due to the nature of Vaughan 111 personnel will be expected to perform duties outside of their normal qualifications such as janitorial duties and food preparation the exact distribution of these roles is left to oversee your discretion oh so does that mean that they were working on a sort of skeleton and crew while arriving they told us that there was a deeper part of the vault but so far we haven't seen a very big vault could it be that this was tiny and didn't have room for many scientists backing out we can move down to all-clear and evacuation here we find two entries in the first all-clear message following a nuclear event vault-tec will monitor hazards such as radiation levels enemy invasion subsequent attacks and other factors once conditions are deemed safe this terminal will receive an all-clear notice upon receiving the all-clear notice vault-tec personnel may be evacuated at overseer discretion disregard any notices from organizations or individuals not associated with vaulteq include government and military residents are not to be disrupted or evacuated vault-tec will attend to their needs remotely once vault 11 staff have been evacuated so this explains why a remote override was even possible the plan all along was to only keep people here long enough to make sure that the experiment was launched without a hitch then after the all-clear vault-tec would evacuate the scientists here and monitor the experiment presumably from their headquarters but if the Institute was able to initiate a remote override does that mean they somehow gained access to vault-tec controls I presume vault-tec wouldn't have given them up voluntarily does that mean that vault-tec didn't survive the apocalypse and that the Institute just happened upon the data and infrastructure they left behind in the final one mandatory shelter period vault 111 is classified as a short-term assignment non-resident personnel are expected to carry out research duties and basic maintenance of the vault while awaiting the all-clear signal to evacuate so it was a skeleton crew just enough people to manage this short-term assignment in the absence of an all-clear message from vault-tec the overseer may elect to evacuate staff after a mandatory shelter period of 180 days of containment under no circumstances may vault 111 staff evacuate during this shelter period unless receiving the all-clear message from vault-tec oh oh so they could leave after a hundred and eighty days does this explain why we don't find anyone here or their descendants backing all the way out we can move on to security logs October 23rd 2077 god it finally happened the world's over barely got all the residents inside not everyone made it oh I suppose that could explain the empty pod we found now it's just us and the icebergs I don't get it eggheads trying to explain to me that keeping them frozen is a big experiment for a better future or something I don't know it just doesn't seem right that we were smiling at them all that time before putting them on ice shouldn't we have told them something maybe but that would have pandamonium everyone comes down here after the bombs drop then some security guy says oh by the way we're gonna freeze you some would have resisted most probably would have resisted forcing the security team as we learned from this terminal to dispose of them in the next one December 25th 2077 Christmas Underground got together with the rest of the security boys and support staff and had a little party best gift that got handed out was a fancy lad snack cake that wasn't too stale none of the scientists came the overseer wasn't there either I just don't get them they hiding something from us another company secret only for the higher-ups whatever just a few more months until the all-clear is supposed to come through then we can start rebuilding in the next one marks 14 20 78 only a few weeks left in our mandatory shelter period everyone's getting stir-crazy some people are even saying the all-clear signal is never coming we can't stay here much longer that's for sure it's not just the fact that I've been staring at the same break room and bunk for over six months it's the fact that we only have enough food left for another few months tops the overseer keeps telling everyone to be patient focus on work he's definitely keeping us out of the loop something bad is going on I just know it in the next one April 23rd long after the mandatory shelter period should have ended the main door access and vault exit is malfunctioning now the only way out is through the overseers evacuation tunnel how convenient for him he has one of the science team watching the door into his office at all times from a little makeshift checkpoint got invited to a meeting tonight support staffers and security only sounds like I'm not the only one with an axe to grind and of course that makes sense it's been over a hundred and eighty days presumably they never got the all-clear which means the overseer should tell them that they're free to go but then again it was at the overseers discretion but he couldn't keep them all here perpetually could he in the final one last entry no all clear from fall tech is coming we need to leave we are all but out of food I almost murdered Stan Lee for dropping a damn salt cracker on the fluor a handful of us confronted the overseer about opening the vault I never knew a man that small could shout that loud now he's locked himself in his office along with the rest of the science staff we are supposed to hand over any food weapons and medicine we have by tonight or there's going to be consequences I've talked to everyone it's time one way or another we're getting out of this vault so that's how it all went down but how did it end did they get out what happened to the overseer leaving the security room we continued by opening the door to the east at the end of a tunnel we arrived at a hallway where we kill our first enemy a rat roach giant roaches what the hell next to this we find a bit of a break room a few tables set out hardly a cafeteria not meant to serve very many people here we find a recreation terminal in the first overseer memo remember use of the recreational terminal is a privilege if work performance declines this privilege may be revoked enjoy responsibly sounds like a nice guy in the next one top ten when we find the initials of some of the staff here who played the game that was on this terminal the funny thing about this is many of these initials are actually console commands TGM toggle god mode TCL toggle clipping funny little inside joke and the final one we can play or eject the tape the hollow tip we get is the game a Red Menace it's like Donkey Kong only with a vault boy and I guess the manifestation of Chinese communism it has a vault girl kidnapped in its throwing nukes at us pretty great we'll add that to our collection backing out we can move east here we find a small kitchen there's a teeny tiny bathroom and shower and we see that it was presumably shared by every member of the science staff we find a bunk room nearby not a lot of privacy here in the vault no wonder security was going crazy but it's been mostly cleaned out there are eight beds here we don't know how many were for the scientists and how many were for security but assuming one bed for the overseer that means this vault only staffed nine people leaving the rec room we can head back to the hallway and open the door to the west this brings us to her reactor room and of course they are nuclear-powered still functioning after all of these years we find a few dead rat roaches and our first skeleton he's not wearing a lab coat so I doubt he was a vault tech scientist but he's also not wearing security armor he couldn't be a resident we found all of our neighbors dead in their pods it can't be the body of the guy who was in c1 we read from the terminal that that one was vacant my best guess is that this is the corpse of one of the security personnel but perhaps his armor has long since been stripped but if this is a security guard then that means they violin they confronted the scientists and the scientists fought back what happened here where is everyone opening the door we can head up the stairs to kill more radroaches at the top of the stairs we open a door to enter the overseers office this is a very different vault no atrium no overseers window is this all that's left it was clearly designed from its very foundation to never have living residence we find three stimpacks on his desk evidence that the scientists were wounded or were at least preparing for a battle and then we find the skeleton of the overseer lying on the ground in his chair on his desk we find a 10 millimeter pistol they were clearly fighting to the death but why would the overseer let it come to this why wouldn't he just let them leave after all the mandatory period was over inspecting his terminal we find a number of entries vault 111 overseer instructions confidential overseer eyes only we learn a little bit of what we learned before vault 111 is designed to test the long-term effects of suspended animation on unaware human subjects your staff will be on short-term assignment to monitor basic cardiopulmonary and cognitive functions long-term monitoring will be handled remotely by vault-tec technicians under no circumstances is suspension to be disrupted this includes the administration of life-saving measures your staff is also considered expendable insubordination or attempts to evacuate prematurely our capital violations unused cryogenic pods are the preferred method for cadaver disposal but we only found one unused pod and it was still empty so it looks like the overseer and his scientists didn't win in the next one cryolator I have long dreamed of making cryogenic freezing available in a portable on-demand form the cryolator is my latest attempt thankfully we are a no short supply of the chemicals and components I need to tinker with the prototype it's a nice way to occupy the time as we wait for the all-clear signal this is an important entry it tells us that even the overseer honestly expected an all-clear signal from vault-tec an all-clear signal which never came and it tells us that the cryolator was a personal experiment of the overseer he was able to conduct this experiment because he had access to the cryogenic chemicals used to freeze the people in the pods presumably he was working on the prototype because one didn't exist at least not one that he knows of so to find the cryolator in West Virginia seems like a continuity error to me the next one operations protocol manual has all the same entries we read on the security terminal so backing out and moving down to overseers log we find five entries in the first one preparations the final staff orientation is complete all but a few of the residents down in sanctuary Hills have been enrolled and several from Concord as well vault-tec supervisors came up this week to do a technical review with me this vault is ready to open I can only imagine what wonders our residents will get to witness the notion of leaping forward in time I almost wish I could join them and see the promise of our future realized so this guy was a vault tech true believer probably a graduate of fall tech University he swallowed their propaganda pill hole in the next one October 23rd it's happened and we were lucky than most of the staff was nearby when the early warning came through we had less notice than expected but only Nord Hagen was missing when we sealed the entrance Nord Hagen was Nord Hagen the guy who was supposed to be in cryogenic pod c1 is that why it's empty or was he a vault tech employee and even though they had eight beds in the dorm it only housed seven people but this is really interesting could Nord Hagen have gone on to found a settlement at Nord Hagen beach could that be why the beach is named after him also of note the overseer mentioned that he received an early warning the residents of sanctuary didn't receive an early warning they found out as the bombs were dropping with the rest of the nation for an entire vault to be staffed with overseers security personnel and scientists they would need more than the what five minutes or so between TV reception cutting and the bombs dropping on Boston could this early warning explain how they all got there first but if they got an early warning that bombs were dropping how did vault-tec know that china was going to drop the bombs according to the DEFCON status at the switchboard absolute earliest vault-tec could have been notified was at three minutes into midnight that morning when the United States detected three enemy vehicles off the California coast or at 3:30 7:00 in the morning when the Air Force found a squadron of airplanes flying at high altitude off the Bering Strait if they moved it either of those two times that would have given them hours plenty of time to get to the vault but if they waited until 9/13 in the morning when DEFCON 2 was announced that would have given them only 34 minutes to get to the vault more notice than the sole survivor got but could you wake up and transport an entire vault staff two of Ault in only 34 minutes resident admittance went smoothly everyone made it even the family that waited until the last minute oh that's us so even before we signed the papers they were counting on us to be part of their experiment we were hand-picked for this I wonder why I was worried there would be more suspicion but things happen so fast for these people they must have been too overwhelmed to question the cryogenic bonds and the next one systems malfunction strange issue today with pod c3 subject appeared to be having heart palpitations nothing life-threatening but unusual we realized almost too late that the pod was malfunctioning her cryogenic array almost started thawing her out we're not sure but I suspect a hiccup in vault X remote override systems may have sent out an errant signal we'll have to keep an eye out I only hope their systems are reliable once we evacuate the staff this is really illuminating first it tells us that despite orders from vault-tec to just let 80% of the people die these guys man the overseer were willing to correct an issue with one of the pods if it meant risking a life he says that we realized almost too late that it was malfunctioning which means that once they realized it was malfunctioning they acted to fix the malfunction so perhaps even the overseer and his scientists are not quite as monstrous as vault-tec proper the problem with this is the overseer says the cryogenic array almost started thawing her out so a woman must have been in c3 but when we inspect c3 we find mr. Callaghan it not only says mr. Callaghan in the terminal but we see him they're still in the pod so either this is a mistake or the original occupant of this pod died in the malfunction and then for some reason vault-tec decided to put mr. Callahan in here afterwards I don't know which is accurate however I think this being a simple error may be more likely and finally this is one of the only visible indicators that we have as to what might have been going on at vault-tec HQ if a remote override sent an errant signal could that be evidence of violence at HQ could they have been rated and a button accidentally pushed could a machine have been unplugged while it was being looted or could there have been an insurrection and one of the scientists tried to undo a fault Tech's experiments before being dealt with we don't have any answers but it's interesting to think about in the next one supplies running low there's been no all-clear signal yet even though we are nearing the end of the 180 day a mandatory shelter period supplies were never intended to last much more than that and despite my best efforts people are beginning to question what we're doing down here if people think we can just leave when the 180 days are up they're insane the radioactive exposure would still be potent enough to fry everyone if the vault seals are breached that early the whole point of the all-clear was to receive additional instructions from the main office I don't know what to do I can't open the vault but I can't expect our supplies to last forever I just have to keep everything under control until the all-clear what a tricky spot to be in because he's right he had no way of knowing what it was like outside the vault perhaps they all clear didn't come because things were not all clear sure he could let the security staff go but that meant opening the vault door which could potentially contaminate the entire vault not only ruining the experiment but killing everyone including the overseer I began to have a bit more sympathy with this overseer in the final one mutiny a faction led by the security personnel have turned on me demanding they be allowed to leave the vault idiots I will not open the door to be irradiated to death out there I'm consolidating the remaining supplies putting the staff on lockdown we're going to have to start prioritizing who deserves what little food we have left I've been too damn generous with the rations if people don't like it well that's fewer mouths stiffened and that's where the overseers log ends we can open the evacuation tunnel the personnel evacuation tunnel is now open remind all staff to be orderly and follow shutdown protocols before exiting and resealing vault 111 please maintain all staff records and research report to your local vaulteq superiors for debriefing and further instructions the door opens nearby and we see an open cage leading to a bit of an armory an armory that has mostly been looted we find one pistol a couple boxes of ammunition and a locked cryolator case nice coming back later for you it's locked with a master lock making it impossible to get now but if we come back and pick the lock we can walk away with the cryolator nice excellent the cryolator is an interesting weapon that can be modified at a weapons workbench when we get it it acts like a flamer only a flamer that shoots ice however the drawback is that it consumes a lot of ammunition kind of like a plasma caster which just eats through plasma cells however we can modify this into an automatic weapon that shoots frozen ice crystals this saves a lot of ammunition but the projectiles are pretty slow and it's possible for enemies to dodge out of the way before they get hit moving out of the weapons storage we can go into the overseers room it's huge huge what a room almost half the size of the one dorm used by the scientists and security staff and of course he has his own private bathroom talk about living large post apocalypse after exploring the overseers bedroom we can leave up the overseers tunnel here we have to fight a number of radroaches but this time with a gun as we open the door at the end of the hallway we turn right to open yet another door to the exit zone here we kill another radroach and we find the skeleton of a vault tech scientist this guy is wearing the lab coat so I think this is how we differentiate between the two factions the scientists were the lab coats the security personnel didn't just west of this guy is another dead vault-tec scientist and this one still has a functional pip-boy so that pit boys were not given to the residents they were only given to the scientists and presumably the security staff but we didn't find a pip-boy on the overseer or the other dead scientist moving south towards intake we see another skeleton on the ground this one likely a security guard am I the only one left the bottom level of the entryway is flooded there's nothing down here and moving east we see that we've opened the door that was jammed shut this must have been part of the overseers lockdown he locked it down preventing the security staff from leaving which forced them to go through the overseers office but what's the body count two dead security guards two dead scientists and one dead overseer five total WA no the vault Headroom for nine staff so we're missing four people three if we assume Nord Hagen was a member of vault Tec staff if their bodies aren't here the only explanation is that they left the vault in order to open the door we have to have a pip-boy since we find five dead bodies and only one pip-boy I think we can presume that the security team won the scientists chased after them but the security team killed them they killed the overseer in his seat and if they didn't have their own pit boards they took the pip-boy of the overseer and the other scientists before leaving the vault maybe leaving the one we find because by then they all had one I think we can presume that everyone vacated vault 111 within a year after the apocalypse but when they left they reseal the vault and no one else without a pip-boy could get in but then the Institute got a hold of vault Tech's data in infrastructure if they were able to remotely control the cryo pods at this vault they were likely able to remotely open the door even if they didn't have a pip that's how Kellogg and the Institute scientists got in and perhaps this can explain why we find so few resources in the vault the security staff likely looted whatever they could when evacuating including most of the weapons we only find a handful of pistols at a small bit of ammunition perhaps Kellogg and the Institute salvaged everything else when they came on through when we emerged topside we do find skeletons all over the place some of these could have been the security team that fled the vault however I think it's more likely that these are the skeletons of the people who weren't allowed in the vault but also of the military soldiers and vault-tec staff who were helping to usher people below ground remember when the nukes dropped there were lots of people up here there was even a vertibird but even though a nuclear detonation was imminent even after seeing the mushroom cloud they all remained focused on their job they helped us into the vault how tempting would it have been as the elevator went below ground for one of them to leap onto the elevator to save himself instead of being vaporized in the nuclear detonation as so many of them were even though at this point we know how evil the whole tech was and how evil the pre-war American government was I think there were still good people working at vaulteq and good people working for the government who were ignorant of their atrocities and just trying to make a living people who were even heroic and would knowingly sacrifice themselves just to make sure that all of Ault 111's residents entered the vault safely they had no way of knowing that only two would survive that is the short but complete history of vault 111 and it's tied up closely with the history of the sole survivor and a history of the nearby suburb of sanctuary for it was the people of sanctuary who were the primary targets of vault-tec vault-tec whose experiment even depended on the residents saying yes and so we'll have to cover the full story of sanctuary and the people
