the crown is filled to the brim with historical facts and thoughtful production values but there are likely some things you missed the netflix hit has been a major success for four seasons now that that fourth season is out let's take a look at the subtle details throughout the series history you may not know about season three delves further into the history of prince charles one of the key moments being his investiture formerly acknowledging his title as prince of wales this is an excellent example of the tv show committing to historical accuracy as the scene was filmed in the same location that the event took place the investiture ceremony took place at karnavan castle in wales on the day the prince of wales gave a speech in both english and welsh it was quite the scandal when news came out explaining that matt smith was being paid significantly more than claire foy for his work on the crown though smith was a popular actor when he was cast known for his work on doctor who claire foy appeared on screen significantly more than he was and portrayed the central character of the show while there were reports that foy was to receive back pay to make up for the difference the actress has claimed this never happened after this incident the creative director of the series production company suzanne mackey has said that going forward no one gets paid more than the queen evidently they honored this statement as olivia coleman has been paid more than her counterpart tobias mingus for her portrayal of the queen thanks to some familial connections actress helena bonham carter actually met princess margaret at windsor castle no less bottom carter has said that when she met the royal they had a bit of an awkward interaction according to the actress the princess said you are getting better aren't you which she believed to be a reference to her acting while this isn't the best comment for an actor to hear the actress certainly gives a stellar performance as the princess throughout seasons three and four helena bottom carter was not the only one to meet her real life royal counterpart actress olivia coleman and the queen herself have also met though their meeting wasn't quite as planned coleman has reported that she accidentally met the queen while they were both at an event for the british film institute thinking she was in a long line to get food the actress quickly realized the line was actually formed because queen elizabeth ii and prince philip were in attendance she was told to greet the royals briefly and move on which she did but not without a fluttering of nerves according to the actress the actress playing queen elizabeth ii not only graced the screen with her regal clothing and manner but she also wore a corset beneath it all while doing so during the first season of the show claire foy had recently given birth and was feeding a four-month-old when the crown began filming to help her manage playing the role of the queen and fulfilling her role as a real-life mother the costume department included secret zippers in the back of foye's costumes to make it easier for her to tin to her little one matt smith pulls off playing young prince philip with such skill it's hard to imagine any other actor in the role however there was one key physical detail that the production made adjustments to in order to bring the character to life more authentically his hair smith is naturally a brunette so for historical accuracy the show had him wearing a blonde wig to make the actor appear more visually similar to the real prince philip both the hair department and matt smith certainly pulled the look off as the wig is so realistic actors use mini tricks to help them with their performances but the one john lithgow used was a little less conventional the key to his performance as the prime minister was cotton in order to achieve the signature nasally voice of winston churchill the actor stuffed cotton in his nose i hear you're a shadow of your former self that when you walk the pills rattle around inside of you it's hard to believe lithgow is actually american since he pulled off a very convincing english accent on the show it's even more impressive to us knowing he performed a spot-on accent while his nostrils were stuffed with cotton not many people had the opportunity to see their lives dramatized on screen but that hasn't been the case for the real-life royals we imagine anyone would be curious to see how a television show portrayed their life and evidently the queen was the monarch has watched at least season 1 of the series and is reported to have enjoyed it that being said she didn't totally appreciate the dramatization of certain scenes as they sometimes skewed the truth on the other hand her husband prince philip hasn't been such a fan and does not have any desire to watch the show the younger generation of royals grandson of the queen prince harry and his wife meghan markle have reportedly also watched the show together and enjoyed it the duke and duchess of sussex began a production company and have signed a major deal with netflix the reports suggest that the royal couple made a demand to the streaming service regarding the crown their request from the young royals was that the popular series end its run before getting to the royal drama surrounding the two of them and their family which has been subject to much scrutiny as of late creator peter morgan has confirmed that the hit series would end before telling the more recent royal family stories to ensure that the show doesn't become journalistic did you notice the sneaky easter egg in season three in a conversation between princess anne and prince charles the princess says that if charles is to be involved with camilla parker-bowles there would always be three people in their relationship we believe it's his intention to ask her to marry him fine as long as he's prepared for there to always be three in the marriage viewers of the show would assume the princess was referring to andrew parker bowles camilla's on and off again boyfriend this quote was taken from history but it wasn't princess anne who said it it was princess diana in a tv interview the princess of wales stated that same thing but in reference to her relationship with prince charles who continued to be involved with camilla over the course of his marriage to the princess anyone who has watched the crown can't ignore the exquisite detail and elegance of the production the series has consistently built lavish and detailed sets to depict the history of the royal family since none of the series has actually been filmed in buckingham palace did you know that for the third season the production company splashed out even more money to make upgrades to their version of buckingham palace talk about the royal treatment the queen's famous corgis always seem to steal the show whenever they're on screen and they get nothing short of the best treatment while on set the tv pups are said to be big fans of cheese cheddar in particular no cheese grommet claire foy stated that the dogs ate nearly a full block of cheddar every day and that it was quote scary even though the actress isn't a fan of dogs she said that she did love her furry co-stars who knows maybe the pups shared their royal cheddar with her the second cousin once removed of queen elizabeth ii and uncle of prince philip lord louis mountbatten is portrayed by the talented greg wise in seasons 1 and 2. what viewers may not know is that the actor also happens to be married to a fellow performer emma thompson wise is no stranger to acting in a period piece as he met his wife while they were both acting in the 1995 film sense and sensibility just like the real royal family the popular show is worth a lot of money in order to accurately depict the royal lifestyle millions of dollars have been invested in the series the first season cost a whopping 130 million dollars to make though according to peter morgan that price tag actually covers the first two seasons each episode is reported to ring up a bill of about 6.5 to 13 million dollars regardless of which budget viewers believe the entire series will likely end up costing about 390 million to 780 million dollars the first season of the show looks at the major familial drama surrounding princess margaret's relationship with peter townsend the royal equity to king george vi and queen elizabeth ii the reason this relationship was considered controversial was because of the 16-year age gap between them and the fact that townsend was divorced and had two children from his previous marriage while the show depicts queen elizabeth ii taking issue with townsend and the princess being romantically involved the reality is this wasn't factual the queen never actually had a problem with the relationship and ultimately it was princess margaret who decided not to marry townsend while filming season 1 of the show there was an incident that could have had tragic outcomes matt smith nearly died on set when the horse he was riding misbehaved and set off smith tried to grab onto a branch but the crew advised him not to as it could have made matters worse the actor wound up going under the branch and down a ravine while the horse galloped toward a herd of zebras luckily the actor was saved by a man who grabbed the reins and got the potentially disastrous situation under control episode 4 of season 1 tells the story of the great smog a catastrophic event in british history the tragic event lasted for 5 days in december 1952 and wreaked havoc throughout the city the incident took thousands of lives and while the smog was a huge disaster the panic and mania weren't quite as intense as the show portrayed since fogg was quite common in london regardless this was still a major tragedy in their history with so many lives being lost in season 3 audiences were shown a bit of royal inception as the royal family allows the bbc to come into their home to film a documentary about the family that would be broadcast to the public the hope was that the film would humanize the royals and shed a light on what went on behind the scenes while this story is true and a documentary was made the show strayed away from the facts a bit in the crown the idea to do the documentary comes from prince philip but in actuality it was lord braeburn who devised the plan the documentary was shot over the course of 75 days in 172 locations it was released in 1969 to huge success reaching 40 million viewers from around the world people may wonder why we haven't heard much about the famous documentary and there is a good reason for that in 1970 the film was locked away in the royal archives at buckingham palace so that the whole thing could never be viewed again another season 3 episode shares the story of the oberfund disaster a tragedy that struck the small welsh village in 1966. after a colliery spoil tip collapsed well over 100 lives were lost with many of them being children the crown depicts queen elizabeth ii visiting oberfon eight days after the incident and dabbing away fake tears as she speaks to the villagers according to witnesses and sir william hesseltine who was one of the queen's private secretaries there is no validity to this detail reports have concluded that she was visibly overcome with emotion and shed real tears during her visit the queen has stated that waiting so long to go to aberfin was her deepest regret but she remained dedicated to the village throughout her life the monarch has returned to the welsh village many times throughout her life since the tragedy the series has consistently included major events especially the dramatic ones so it comes as quite a surprise that one of the most dramatic and notable incidents involving princess anne is completely skipped over in the show in 1974 someone tried to kidnap the princess very near the gates to buckingham palace the kidnapper ian ball was armed and had shot at the car ball got so far as the door of the car the princess was in and the two had a short discussion the kidnapper tried to grab the royal but fortunately the princess managed to escape it was later discovered that the man who attempted to kidnap the royal was planning to ask the queen for nearly 4 million dollars as a ransom ian ball was sentenced to life at a psychiatric hospital following trial the story seems too wild to be true so it's a bit of a mystery as to why the show chose to skip over this very dramatic piece of royal history known for extremely detailed and elegant production design the crown took no shortcuts when it came to bringing the equally elegant history of the royal family to life the first episode of season one depicts the royal wedding of queen elizabeth ii and prince philip with elaborate detail the dress claire foy wears for the wedding is almost an exact replica of the real dress the queen wore the costume used in the show took an impressive seven weeks and thirty seven thousand dollars to create the show definitely didn't take any shortcuts considering the dress was only used for one episode of the series john lithgow gives a thoughtful and impressive performance as winston churchill using his cotton trick to nail the right voice what audiences likely didn't notice was the difference in the size of the sets that lithgow appeared in the actor that portrayed the prime minister is actually very tall measuring a remarkable 6-4 whereas the real churchill was only 5-6 to accommodate his height the scale of the sets was increased to make the depiction of the height of the former prime minister more accurate just when we thought the sets of the show couldn't get any grander lithgow came along to raise the bar quite literally princess margaret was known for being regal and dressing impeccably for royal events from day to day the princess is known to have dressed in many dior designs much of her fashion was inspired by the french so the costume designer for the show made outfits for actors vanessa kirby and helena bonham carter that were inspired by paris fashion at the time in fact the most expensive outfits made for the show were made for the princess margaret character designer amy roberts has also said that she somewhat color-coded the royal sisters princess margaret and queen elizabeth ii dressing the younger in bold and edgy color and the queen in gentle pastels contrary to the elegant way princess margaret is always dressed scenes from the show that follow the queen within the castle and going day-to-day have her dressed in quite simple subdued clothing the choice was on purpose as the costume designer for season 1 of the series michelle clapton said she believes that if queen elizabeth ii weren't a royal she would have been a country wife the way the queen is dressed when not attending to official royal duties is reflective of this idea the costumes used in the show are a combination of new pieces created for the production and actual vintage items that were sourced by the design team many of the pieces used in the show had to be built as vintage pieces that would suit the royal fashion are difficult to find the actors in the show also got to work with the designers on the costume choices for the characters they portrayed whether they were new or vintage items we can be sure that the production was not frugal with money when it came to outfitting the actors since certain pieces cost tens of thousands of dollars to create with such a major production there are loads of details from sets to accents to costumes and behind the scenes stories even though the show hasn't remained totally true to history the specificity the creators put into the show is remarkable how many of these details did you know about let us know in the comments section below be sure to give us a like if
