maude flanders was springfield's self-righteous christian until she was abruptly killed off and so cast into the deep dark depths of animation hell left to become satan's mistress i'll for crying out loud but did she deserve this did her character contribute enough in the show to keep her or was her death the best thing that could have happened to ned the show and even moored herself this is a super juicy one folks as this is the complete timeline of mould flanders [Music] her early life now unfortunately we don't really know where or when maude was born we don't actually meet her parents or hear about them for that matter but we do come across her when homer is shown what his life would have been like if he became school president this includes turning down as certain maude flanders as a prom date as he would have much rather dated debbie pinson which is interesting as we know that ned flanders is 60 years old in the present day timeline so that's a big age difference marrying ned and meeting the simpsons we don't really pick up on moore's life until she meets her dear husband ned flanders we meet the newlyweds on the road to their honeymoon having got hitched at 2pm that very day they come across the needy homer in march and maude is initially reluctant about helping the dirty lovebirds but ned being the persistent good samaritan he is put his foot down and even though it may seem kind of insignificant this could hinter how their presumed perfect relationship may have a few hairline cracks ned seemed like the kind of guy who believed and performed as he felt a christian should whereas maude seemed to love the judgment part but she didn't really want to get her hands or her car dirty anyway the foursome drove to a cabin hideaway where the flanders made it their mission to make sure the unmarried home and march remained celibate until the day they said i do and i know you may be thinking poor net worrying about the celibacy of two strangers rather than enduring his own honeymoon well you'd be wrong as mord knew exactly how to keep her man happy your dead grandmother's pajamas you know what that does to me and i bet it wasn't just cozy pajamas and cabin hideaways that made their honeymoon the best night of ned's life they must have had a pretty comfy bed too but nothing nothing comes quite as close to emma's sleep now i really needed a new mattress my back was getting so sore so when i got mine from emma's sleep i was so amazed at how comfy and supportive it was for my back it's delivered conveniently in this big old box and i simply unpacked it popped it on the bed frame waited for a few hours for it to fully inflate and it was ready to be used with its memory foam technology coolness for those hot hot days and premium spinal support i genuinely get to sleep so much quicker and i just have a better night's sleep in general they make it so easy and so flexible for you to make the right choice too allowing you 200 nights to make sure that the mattress suits you and if it's not they collect it completely free they offer the same service for their devon beds too handmade in the uk they're stylish and designed in neutral simply click the link below and enter the code simpsons for a great deal and an amazing night's sleep after the honeymoon married life troubles one thing that was pretty consistent is that her and ned's marriage wasn't as perfect as you'd expect two christian foe to have in the episode duffler's ned recalls his stint of alcoholism and how i was more animal than man and instead of wondering why her husband is as drunk as a skunk she only gasps at what he says and landers is a boring old biddy ned which is probably why ned finds it so darn hard to order a white wine spritzer give me a white wine spritzer ritzer in another episode called postcards from a wedge ned recalls another argument where he and maude argued over him using her embroidered handheld these small tips are just some examples to suggest they may not be as compatible as we think they are no matter their shared religious views weren't you a little hard on him well you knew i had a temper when you married me the birth of todd six years before the present day homer is cast out of his home after embarrassing marge at his office party and left with nowhere to turn ned flanders gladly invites the dejected homer and he's met with a heavily pregnant moored who is obviously irked by the oath of the man spending christmas with them this shows they've been neighbors for some time as mord seems fully aware of homer's reputation and this reminds me of her reluctance to help homer before compared to ned's always open arms he's delivering christmas turkeys to the poor that's selfish she eventually gets her way and casts him out behind ned's back and homer is out again on his own living secretly above his own garage but when he hears more contractions he rushes over to be a hero and delivers the baby successfully he put aside his own normal oathy behavior to make more feel at ease finally showing marge he can think of others as well as himself this not only brought little baby todd homer flanders into the world but it seemed to heal mould's disapproval for homer even if temporarily succeeding in parenthood in the episode the kids will fight ned and maude are still living next door to the simpsons and proud parents of the impeccably behaved rod and todd the flanders knew homer and marge were having a tough time with the kids so suggested that the four of them should go to brunch's adults leaving grandma flanders to babysit hello joe however even in an episode where they are shown to be typically good parents their marriage was far from a consistently happy one with their brunch consisting of the couple sitting in silence and marathon water chugging it's safe to say their lives together seem pretty dull and constrained and that's eagerness to help the misfortune of it could be his way of filling an empty void of his marriage with some kind of chaos he perhaps craved and more testing to help could have hinted that she was pretty content with their simple life and this theme would develop as we go through her timeline we see other glimpses into their earlier stage of parenthood in todd todd why has thou forsaken me when ned shows his boys a family vhs of their christmases together it reminds todd of his mum after her future passing this touching memory shows us that maude was a hugely supportive and dedicated mother having faith in her children to do great things like popping the star atop the christmas tree it's here we are privy to her true tender side even inviting a neurotic grandpa for christmas dinner it seems that when homer is concerned she is less happy to help but a defenseless old man maybe more does have a heart in the right place after all i mean who would really volunteer to have homer in their home maude's growing judgmental side in the episode plan canyon we are invited into a memory of when the flanders clan journey to the grand canyon with the simpsons over the course of this trip we can see her growing judgment of marge's mothering techniques this is a quality we will see frequently over her time in the show i'm only gonna say this once but i think you're a little checked out she takes motherhood deadly seriously showing deep devotion over her boys while tending to todd's night terrors before her death during the show's quote-unquote present in this section i would like to take some time to remember maud's pinnacle contribution to the show before she popped her clogs it seemed there was a time when there was a real place for maude a loving mother to a rod and todd a soulmate for ned up until those flashback episodes i mentioned a judgmental neighbor for marge and for homer and in a fair few episodes she was almost the girl next door for homer the wife is a thing for me but she hides it behind a mask of low-key hostility quite often hinting at how lucky ned was to have her as well as the whole peanuts incident the ones at the bottom oh okay maud mostly ran in the same crowd as helen lovejoy and they always seem to be on some kind of righteous crusade she protested against burlesque houses marge's pretzels and michelangelo's david in short she was always atop the moral high ground that marge could never reach i told her she was soft on full frontal nudity come on girls sometimes they were on the same side but mord always took it that bit further oh marge you are such a wet blanket whereas marge's kids had a zest for life and mischief fueled by sugar moore's kids definitely weren't no sugar but despite her judgmental attitude she wasn't all bad she fully supported her husband when he opened the leftorium and when the business went buzzed she put in a brave face for her family and kept him in high spirits this supportive side would come back again in hurricane neddy the episode showed maude rod and todd as a real unit or taken aback by neddy's behavior before this breakdown mode really did try her best to keep ned calm first thing tomorrow we're going to open up the leftorium and before you know it we'll be back on our feet but springfield shoddy diy was enough to make anyone go bonkers but slowly as the show was running maud's character faded more and more into the background when she wasn't glued to rod and todd she was stuck to helen and when she wasn't stuck to helen she was in ned's shadow as the doting wife in fact by season 11 she'd become less and less of a person that even her voice changed rest in peace mort moored flanders died in season 11's alone again natura diddly after returning from collecting some snacks for the car rally which definitely didn't include footlongs mordis blasted off the bleachers by a t-shirt gun now for a bit of context if you're asking why she had to die it was basically over a paid dispute between voice actress maggie roswell and the network and so when they couldn't agree on a settlement there was only really one way to go for mort oh my lord she's dead it was weird to see her funeral set amongst the tombstones of bleeding gums murphy beatrice simmons and frank grimes as the difference was that maude did have a place in the show outside one or two episodes but maybe just maybe her true contribution to the show was post-death moored's real purpose yeah moore's death was sad than that but we cannot deny it sparked of a whole new interest in the flanders household and it was a rather quick pivot too in the same episode as her death you know after being knocked at the bleachers her funeral and ned's grieving he was back on the dating game albeit pushed by homer but i can't help but feel that this was the creator's way of also getting ned's character back on the horse no longer tied to the overdone nuclear family stick he had been upholding for so many seasons it seemed that we were now introduced to a whole new net not just the happy-go-lucky neighborino but someone who felt a bit more dimensional and i'm not saying that this episode didn't have any heart it did show ned's attempts to date but his determination that maude was the only one for him shined through it made him grieve even more even settling down his faith for a short time and i may not go to church tomorrow [Music] but when he hears the sweet voice of a certain rachel jordan it seemed to mark that there was a whole lot more of love life and character still in old nedi and god really did have a plan for him if you count fox as a god that is and it wasn't just his love life that was being reawakened he was also exploring other areas of entrepreneurship that furthered his leftorium with the opening of praiseland this park was dedicated entirely to moored inspired by drawing left behind in her sketchbook and unfortunately the park did fail due to a mysterious gas leak but as he locks up the gates for good it seems like he was finally getting some closure may i remind you this was a whole season after her death as he locks the gate he turns around and locks eyes with rachel yet again willing to give him another chance after a pretty horrific first date this really symbolized a whole new net he created his biggest dedication for maude which ultimately failed and rachel represented a future he could safely embark on without any fear or judgment we could say that this was maude's biggest contribution as ned now took risks leading on to some of ned's more successful pursuits of love such as the sultry sarah sloan and edna krabappel rachel was the safe move for maude but these two ladies really pushed ned outside of his comfort zone and showed aside to him we had never really seen before he was finally getting some of the chaos he craved moored after her death now just for a bit of fun here is a quick little side segment maude is actually shown to be in attendance at lisa's wedding now bear in mind this episode was created in season six long before roswell had left the show so then it would have made sense to see her in a future scene but as we all know the past present and the future is as fragile as a mosquito so we can just mark this as just one of the futures in the simpsons to get back on course more did come back multiple times albeit through paranormal means and each one stranger than the last but she did she first reappeared in treehouse of horror 13 as a demonic force a sweeter presence in heaven as she looks over rod's growth in season 17 satan's actual mistress in season 23 and she even dates ned as a ghost in season 25. there is no god neddy it's just an empty meaningless void and it's notable to say that maggie roswell was back and the creators were now finally able to have a bit more fun with mort's character far more than they ever did before season 11 anyway she now had a more realized presence telling ned that death was just a void and heather never existed and overall was just being a whole lot more meta hell even homer played into it by saying t-shirt guns definitely don't kill anyone right before a t-shirt smashes into moore's portrait but it seems that in season 29 she finally gets her revenge and perhaps unveils the true dark nature that she was trying so hard to conceal flanders ladder is perhaps the strangest simpsons episode ever so if you're one of those who try to forget that the simpsons even exist past season 15 or so you've been missing out in it moored appears in both subconscious to push him into avenging her by killing homer and he orchestrates his death too with t-shirt cannons as maud ascends into the heavens after her death life has got far more fun for ned but also her character too i mean i would much rather be a paranormal force rather than just another dum-dum in springfield thank you so much for watching and i'll smell you later [Music] [Music] you
