what's not to love about gotcha get no not you let's try this again what's not to love about gotcha games I spend money and I get nothing in return why do I still play them good question honestly I think it might be a Stockholm Syndrome sort of thing the crowning feature of most gotchas is the ability to pull for the strongest and flashiest units in the game hot girls hot guys more hot girls more hot guys dragons dragons that look like hot girls honestly the list just goes on many gotchas even include collaborations with other franchises to draw new players into the game and get existing players to spend even more money to get their favorite characters Sonics in mobile ripoff Pokemon huh but the biggest brain move of all is when franchises say NACO labs are for babies and make their own gotchas Mario Kart mean and Kingdom Hearts but sorry I I scared myself saying that one that's how bad it is but best of all you've got anime play some strange form of Bubble Bobble pachinko with your favorite characters from Bunco stray dogs pop coloured bubbles in dragon ball z dokkan battle what is up with all these bubbles now what if I told you that some marketing bastards mix the joy and despair of gotcha with the hit series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure let's check in and see a Jojo fans reaction here you can see a real Jojo fan you can tell he's not a fake Jojo fan because part 7 is his favourite and he's holding a Rocky's manga theory and practice book even though he hasn't read it so we heard you like gotcha games and anime yeah yeah I do did you know that on the Japanese app stores they made a Jojo gotcha game really are you being seriously messing with me yeah we're lying to you there's three Jojo gotcha games well I mean two active ones because one of them closed recently but technically that's right did you even know there were three Jojo gotcha games yeah I bet you didn't but if you didn't that's totally okay because they aren't in English or anything and if you did by some chance heck yeah now that we've hit the point of no return let's start off by talking about the original Jojo gotcha air hockey Stardust shooters launched back in March of 2014 and the gameplay consists of equipping different character metals on a team and just whacking them into enemy units you can also tap to flip the medals or activate skills that do flashy [ __ ] and big damage even after five years the game is still going strong averaging over a million dollars a month for pretty much all of 2019 I found a Japanese website called game AI that has some statistics for mobile games and I don't know if it's reputable at all but we're gonna treat it as sacred texts for the purposes of this video so why is Jojo bumper battle so popular even though the game may look a bit dated I think it's continued success lies in its high learning curve and absurd amount of content for both new and veteran players it's not just air hockey the game is constantly adding new metals with unique animations like for example this Joe duro and Iggy one where Jotaro just [ __ ] he just throws that dog there are also tons of rotating event quests requiring you to use specific rarities or colors and a tower where you have to use new teams on each floor so you can't just blow through everything with shigeki while the massive amount of story and event quests can grant quite a hefty number of diamonds to pull on the premium gotcha the game functions on the common system we're pulling the same unit more than once will enhance their stats this creates an incentive for players to spend more money yeah don't worry the concept of incentivizing players to spend money will probably be used in this video more than comedy I can't write that many jokes after playing bust through bumpers for a few weeks I can see why it's remained so popular and engaging over several years there's no auto mode and each aspect of combat requires thought and input from designing unique teams with compatible abilities to aiming and bouncing your units at weak points and moving around enemies for setups its complexity is on par with many other gotcha games with features like evolution uncapping and frog inventory management so I really wish I could read all of the text also yeah I said frog inventory you know josuke frogs stone masked frogs golden frogs zeppeli frogs standard stuff and the music is kind of jammin I'm not gonna lie music isn't really the first thing I'd think of in the Gotcha genre and it's not on the level of the anime or anything but when I turned up the volume on my phone I was rocking out and finally the sheer amount of units and characters packed into Stardust shooters is kind of nuts so if you like games where you collect tons of different characters don't tell your [ __ ] wallet about this one when I was working on my Jojo tearless video many of the obscure characters I needed images for often had a metal in this game freakin Loggins and Messina are in this game Santana Senator Philip Coe a chain yukako make it out of the metal at this point it's probably best to get to the other two games before I start getting addicted to this one even though I can't navigate most of the menus time for something a little more depressing got to keep the pacing of this video aligned with how I feel when I play gotcha games you feel me man I should I should really think about quitting these I don't think they're good for me what I have for you now is the tragic tale of a visually stunning seemingly well designed game that recently met its end Jojo diamond Records is the second Jojo gotcha from bandai namco it was released in February of 2017 as a 3d beat em up Diamond Records is super polished and has some pretty impressive graphics for a mobile game and while I can't find any revenue data from 2017 it seems the game was fairly successful during its second year the gameplay consisted of beating the [ __ ] out of enemies in different stages as your favorite Jojo characters which you summon from different banners with the ability to stack in a similar fashion to start us shooters say with me now to spend money the characters ranged from obvious favorites like do to the greatest characters ever designed like shigeki he's back 3d yet you look at him go look at him fight how did this baby fail this question is rhetorical I'll get to it later but seriously the loading screen is yo Angelo the game's element typing's didn't just have an effect on how much damage you dealt to other units as each element had its own fighting style and bonus effects Diamond Records was developed with freedom of movement and plenty of user input allowing for players to build cheesy team comps and clear harder quests without the best characters if they add enough skill and game knowledge I've messed around with the action mode a bit and it seems like something I would have really enjoyed getting into using the right characters and skills to fight in challenging levels with full 3d combat seems entertaining and with the anime centered visuals and sound design I can see why the game was successful in its first two years but why am I talking about this game in the past tense doesn't it still exist well no in like two different ways you see last year diamond Records players were faced with the great tides of tactical battle in August of 2018 the game was rebranded as Diamond Records reversal and introduced a turn-based combat system most people thought the tactical battles would be an addition and change of pace to the beat-em-up system but as it turned out they actually served as a game-changing replacement a large portion of the community hated the changes which filled many skill-based holes with pay2win mechanics RPG gotchas are much easier to develop than games that allow for complex user input and they also allow for practically infinite levels of power creeping BAM goes back out of the game in addition to removing challenge and user interaction for unhealthy Medes and brainless auto combat the game place which ruined progress for many long time players scaling down equippable mines and stat assists to incredibly weak levels from an outside perspective it seems like nothing but a money-hungry shift that did absolutely nothing for the game imagine just going up to your friends and saying you know what hold on I'll just demonstrate hey like hearthstone right yeah and we made it a racing game Oh what about all the all the cards in index I had oh don't worry we made the ancient one the weakest car in the game he's got one speed while diamond records shift to turn-based combat was clearly done with the prospect of higher profits reversal saw basically the opposite revenue was sliced to a fraction of what it used to be and saw lows of under ninety thousand dollars a month in mid twenty nineteen many veteran players quit severely disappointed by the changes the community walked up to Bandai Namco and said hey [Music] reversals final attempt to generate interest and revenue happened alongside the finale of the part 5 anime where Diavolo and giorno with gold experience Requiem were released back-to-back these were the most powerful units the game had ever seen with the discord server comedic Lee creating an entirely new tear for them on the tier list I mean they aren't as good as Bluford or anything but they're pretty absurd King Crimson can cancel incoming attacks for several turns in a turn-based combat system and then GE ARS passive it just [ __ ] deletes the app from your phone it kills you in real life it nullifies Diablos time erase and turns an enemy's damage to zero like that's bats balance that's in what seemed like a successful return spending reached a peak of $500,000 in August however merely a month after the release of Diavolo it was announced that diamond Records reversal would be shutting down in November 2019 these [ __ ] really said most profitable month all year and people are interested in the game again yep shut er down boys I'll be honest I Auto grinded the hell out of this game for a couple months mostly because I enjoyed watching the visuals and collecting my favorite characters but I never even bothered trying to learn the gameplay I mean goddamn the summoning animation in Diamond Records is one of the coolest I've ever seen josuke throws a rock up in the air and crazy diamond punches it and then Joe duros stops time and it makes the rock better and then you think you're about to get a unit and then Kuro uses bites the dust' like okay so what's the moral of the story I don't know don't completely change the [ __ ] gameplay style and player progress of your game that people have spent time and money on or else they might stop playing and giving you said money I mean I'm not a businessman I'm just spitballing here you know just brainstorming I'm not about to end this video on a depressing note so it's time to talk about my favorite Joe Joe gotcha game pitter-patter pop could it be that it's my favorite because it's the only one without complicated mechanics so I can actually know what I'm doing even though the game is in Japanese or because for being based on a series about a bunch of dudes beaten the [ __ ] out of each other it's strangely adorable with its storybook aesthetic maybe pitter-patter was released in October of 2018 and as of the time of making this video it just finished celebrating its four anniversary you've got a little Jojo baby on our hands it's a tile matching game where you equip - Jojo characters on your team with different skills to clear challenges you can freely move panels across the screen matching form or to deal damage and creating moveable boxes that can unfold after dealing enough damage you enter stand up time where you attempt to make the biggest matches of panels while the timer is stopped and the panels don't disappear characters have different skills like erasing enhancing replacing and being the best unit in the game by stopping time and that's basically all you need to know to get started with pitter-patter leveling and strengthening skills is the only micromanagement found in the game and with a plethora of fan-made character descriptions and translated resources I can actually play the game and understand what I'm doing without knowing Japanese however the lack of depth in this aspect doesn't mean the game is devoid of strategy while a few characters do tend to dominate the meadow with incredibly powerful abilities I'm looking at you risotto you and Joe Darrell can go take your asses up to double nest here for ass and stay there by yourselves I'm gonna hang out while she gets you in beats here the game lends itself to quite a bit of player skill and team variation the diverse skills found in the game allow for interesting team comps to clear missions and get high scores there are several different team comps that aren't really viable at all for getting high scores but you can make a 6x6 with one panel type and that [ __ ] is clean and those are the three Joe Joe gotcha games wait I almost forgot to mention the most important part of pitter-patter you can fill the rooms in your Joe Joe mansion with all the characters you've collected and give them cute furniture and presents and they interact with each other this game is Jojo mixed with freakin Animal Crossing this is why you play the game because it's cute if you play it for any other reason then you're probably lying to yourself I mean they even managed to make some of the most [ __ ] up characters look kind of cute look at a little Malone isn't he just adorable ah what's wrong widowed mom what wait what are you doing with that computer put the no put the computer away no duck stop okay I'm done for real now those are the three Jojo gotcha games with the ever increasing popularity of Jojo outside of Japan I feel like a global release of these games would have serious potential my fingers are crossed for Stardust shooters so I can finally read everything my favorite out of the three right now is definitely pitter-patter if you're looking to get started with it I'll link the discord community in the description there's a lot of super helpful people that taught me practically everything when I joined and even helped me with a lot of the research for this video shout out to Daisy M fizzle and shroom for all the help and big thanks to home daddy slice for letting me use their diamond records gameplay footage and speaking of diamond records I'd recommend it if the game wasn't um if it didn't shut down already hey the video is not over yet I know there's been quite a gap in between my last two uploads but among other things I just wanted to make sure I did this very obscure topic justice if you want to support my channel consider checking out my patreon or just share this video with someone you know who likes Jojo and/or gotcha games or something it's like everyone right thanks for watching and I'll see you soon as in like soon soon like sooner than a month and a half I swear [Music] you
