The BITE that almost KILLED our hired hand - Montana Rattlesnake

all right we've got the man the snake tamer the  snake whisperer he's been known to tickle a snake   or two with his thumb yeah that one didn't tame  too well didn't like the tickling no under the   chin he didn't try did you try open his lip  up a little bit and kind of tickle his teeth   i just figured it'd be a lot nicer than what  it was mean snake he was a very mean snake   sneaky too yeah really they didn't even let  me know what's going to strike so we've got   somebody when they're not even looking in the  house and i figure we started asking questions   about a story because i am dying to hear what  it's like to get bit by rattlesnake and i was   like why don't you guys if i want to know too so  i'm just going to ask brad questions he's going   to answer them what's the most embarrassing  thing you've done in your entire life wow   man growing up going down one of the roads  i don't get embarrassed very easy okay   this is my dad had me um moon one of his good  friends driving down the road your dad did yeah   so he said hey brad here comes jim moon him  so as we were flying by i mooned him and it   wasn't jim oh no and i was little and i hit the  floor and i was kind of embarrassed then but   after that i don't get him pregnant do you have  dreams about that no okay anyways so okay so you   were out catching rattlesnake because that's one  of brad's hobbies he likes he likes to take them   eat them skinned all kinds of everything  above yeah but they're pretty neat animals   and you're pretty good at it you've probably  how many think you've caught in your life   uh probably three to four hundred i've probably  caught so this is brad's handled a few snakes   so you're out there you got a snake it's  a little upset and you had it in a bag and   somehow it came out and got you on the thumb  yeah so i usually catch a snake i get video   i get pictures when it's not so aggressive and  it's easier to mess with and i'll bag it if i'm   gonna bring them bring home the whole snake or if  i'm gonna kill it there i'll just shoot it right   there i was at my buddy's place so i wanted to  bring that big snake up on top to show the kids   and to show everybody it was there and kind of  show them what to stay away from because they   had a bunch of kids on this property it's a brand  new property they bought there's new construction   so the snakes are going to be coming out from so  you were taking care of the snakes to get a snake   proof for them yeah oh that's nice yeah yep that  was nice for me yeah yeah took one for the team   all right so i you know i caught it i'm  gonna bring it up show them what it was   i already had it picked up put in a pillow case  from that pillowcase transferred to a smaller sack   and i cinched the sack up and i was literally  just reaching down to grab the string   on that cinch sack to put in another bag which  i've done hundreds of times and as i was reaching   down as i went to grab that string it sensed my  heat signature coming down through the bag and   just did a blind strike at my house through the  bag through the bag it got you through the bag   so what what kind of a bag is that a burlap  or uh it's more of a small canvas backpack   okay this is one of the little pull  string backpacks with your kids   wow run around right it struck you through the bag  oh man so did you know what happened immediately   immediately um i put my finger down and as soon  as it you couldn't see it strike because it was   in her back yeah so i had the string almost in  my finger and all of a sudden as soon as that   bag hit it was too late because it was there  and i felt one thing um sink into my thumb and   i knew i was hit and that that was it so it got  one in here one thing and a pretty big dose of   animal he probably popped me with everything  he had on that on that one that one side   it wasn't happy so what did you feel right besides  the poking pain the poke wasn't crazy because it   was so sharp and so fast it really was like  i knew i got bit and that was it it's almost   like getting a shot from a doctor you don't really  feel that poke too much the after effect was just   a burning searing pain that as of my thumb  just started pounding and pounding and pounding   did you feel like you had to cut the circulation  off or anything or doing that no i was told not   to okay for the snakes here we have they don't  want you to restrict the blood flow oh okay so   it's not like it's going to stop your heart once  again it's not supposed to okay and most people   it's not supposed to but there's occasionally  those out there that may be allergic to snakes if   you happen to be allergic to snake venom yeah then  it's not cool at all you didn't know that though i   had no idea the first time i've ever been bit um i  figured i'd get hit when i finally got hit i knew   i would eventually i'd go to the hospital i'd get  some ivs put on me i'd probably get some fluids   um i'd have a little bit of you know monitoring  dawn and then they'd probably send me home um   that evening or the next morning i mean i figured  that's just what it would be like yeah um so i   stayed calm i controlled my breathing i did really  well and you got a buddy with you yeah we're at   his property so he was with you so he was able  once you got bit he's like oh let's go you know   i got bit no one was right there next to me okay  so i backed up took the stick grabbed the bag just   picked it up and threw it in the other bag and  zipped it up okay so then i picked that snake   up in the bag at that point went up to the top  of the hill and then told brandon hey i got hit   so we jumped in his truck we all buckled in  and then we hit to the emergency room oh man   how long was that when you got the truck to  get to the emergency room probably 30 minutes   30 minutes okay yeah so so by that time you you  hit the initial sting then what during that whole   time it just kept burning did you feel it i'd  say the burn it just kept burning the thumb just   throbbed and you could just feel the burn just it  just keeps start keep following you know but that   really didn't that didn't hurt a whole lot like  my thumb hurt where it initially hit that kind   of hurt and pulsated it felt like it was swelling  up but like when it was moving like it didn't hurt   like that didn't really hurt that much that was  just a weird tingling like a weird burn that went   up my arm this the thumb itself just burnt bad  yeah and uh you can't probably see it on the   camera but there is a line um that you can trace  it if you want what's that one it runs right here   and then it runs up through here and that's from  the venom seriously it just colored your skin   yeah it's almost like a bruise but yeah it looks  like a bruise i didn't know that you can actually   see i've seen like like you always see like  like cartoons and stuff or like an event when it   strikes in the blacks you know it goes up to one  i didn't realize it actually yeah it actually yeah   and it's actually a lot better now  it was like just solid brews it went   all the way through my thing it's crazy wow  now did any of this part swells up my whole   my arm up here was was pretty pretty puffed my  whole body swelled oh okay when i went through   anaphylactic shock and that how soon did you start  feel like you were going through that half hour   so you were getting close to the emergency room by  the time you started feeling you know i'm starting   to feel the effects of this absolutely within a  half hour my heart was beating to the point where   i was worried about having a heart attack um that  was my concern so was it irregular or fast heart   it was fast and it just hurt and i couldn't stop  my chest from beating and so i was more worried   about having a heart attack than anything else so  i called my wife as soon as i had the reception   told her i was bit told i was on the emergency  room said hey you need to call find out which   emergency room has and i venom yeah so she did her  thing as brandon was driving and then she called   me back and told us what hospital to go to what  emergency room to go to um so when we pulled in   i mean there was already people there waiting  for us wow um to take me back and pretty much   i was pulling in my heart was pounding pretty  hard and i don't remember what after that within   the next half hour everything happened so fast  going into the hospital getting seeing doctors   moving this around moving that around and i was  on my back the whole time when did they decide to   knock you out uh within an hour being bit i don't  know exactly a time but my wife was talking to me   and i said that my tongue was getting swollen  and puffy i couldn't really get hard to breathe   so she grabbed a nurse hey look look at his mouth  and uh my wife said her eyes got like that big   around and took off running out of the room and  went and got some other people and then they came   back and then it was another scatter around and um  that's i don't remember any of that because when   did they know you were having a shock right then  oh oh okay thank you and that's what they said we   gotta we gotta put a tube down your throat i went  i went from that point from me saying i'm having   a hard time breathing to being an incubation and i  don't remember anything else between that i don't   know so then they knocked you out you were 100 for  two days for two days they had two days you were   in no no land two days and that's complete blink  and then i mean you don't you just don't remember   anything you're not swimming in some wonderful  lake with water moccasins no dreams yeah no   dreams no nightmares no dreams no nightmares there  was no good dreams it was it was just nothing huh   i woke up and i looked over and seen some people  and i kind of cleared up and i see my wife and i   was like how are you doing like what time is  it she's like it's like monday monday what wow and they had to give you how many shots of  anti-venom uh three three three bags wow of the   of the serum is that some of the vials  i'm not showing you files so there's many   there's so many vials in each bag yeah  and i'm not sure of that my wife knows   but as far as that when it when they're when they  come they come in like the bags and i took three   of the bags okay and they're like they're like  14 grand a piece aren't they oh i wish they're   not that bad are there more they're 50 a piece  fifty thousand dollars a piece that's what i hear so we got good insurance so i mean i'm hoping i'm  hoping i'm hoping but there's no sense i'm really   stressing about that that's an unknown no it'll  work itself out i'm not worried about it yeah   well the fact you got your thumb still got most  of it okay yeah just okay talk about what they   did then after because the tissue would come back  out get go ahead well the tissue was dying because   of the venom it was it was black right right  when you're the tip of my thumb and it still is   um so about right on here is black on the  right on this so pretty much the whole   pad on my finger okay all around the  thumb line and then lanced up at an angle   and then the whole nail is cut off so he pretty  much capped my entire thong and skinned it   and pulled everything out of it and you know if  you were skinning a deer or something you know and   just skinned it i got a little bit of a nail left  and that may or may not grow back and it may just   be a weird ugly nail for us in my life be the  awkward hand that when you go to shake somebody   everyone's like yeah but looking down it looks  pretty normal good but when you start looking at   other angles you can start seeing where chunks are  missing here or things aren't flat here and but   it's it's healing as good as can  be expected the thing is though   that's me a sweet story seems like snake bite  right it's way better than getting blown off   with like a firecracker an m80 or something yeah  yeah yeah but that's about what it looks like   oh man well that's great well good i'm glad  you're okay all right so are you doing skin grafts   we heard probably not okay so i went into  the doctor appointment on wednesday and   because of the amount of skin and dead skin  that i've already scraped off and removed   to allow it to keep healing and then keeping the  wet dressing on it like the doctor told me to do   it's pretty much healing the best it  can all by itself okay so i've got new   skin generating on the bottom growing up and  all the top is starting to dry out and scab   okay and once that scab dries and meets the new  skin then i can stop wearing this and just start   letting it completely heal but you're just trying  to keep the infection away from right now all i'm   doing is monitoring effects for infection and  just letting my body heal itself and as long as   it does that i won't need skin growth okay okay  yep wow so so you're still good to drive a truck   oh yeah okay just all right good yeah that was  weird um i've always wondered what it was gonna   be like get hit as well and do you know do you  recommend it i don't okay unless you're not legit   oh so if you're not allergic then for some people  yeah some people that aren't allergic don't mind   it at all right but like um it's bad when you  find out you're allergic and not many people are   but yeah it's probably a rare thing yep um but i'm  allergic to it so now i gotta carry an epipen um   to avoid that aspect of it but i'm not gonna  stop hunting them um but you have so many snakes   in montana here that if you were to stop hunting  snakes or stop being around snakes because of that   then i don't think you'd really they'll  do a whole lot of anything in life here so   let's make the snake guy it continues you  know i just got to get better gear and   don't be doing anything stupid anymore  yeah you're a snake whisperer but you   weren't a charmer right then on that snake  you were cuz you couldn't really see me oh   so i went back to early oh so you should have  left his eyes out she had a conversation with him well cool bravo thanks for  telling us your story and   man that was wild when i got the message that  brad is bit by a snake going into shock knocking   him out putting a tube down his throat and  it looks bad i was like oh um it did ah i   was like real life homer simpson with my lips  and my tongue how swelled up it was oh real   yeah jamie's got some pictures and my lips are  like stuck out like this far off my face why the   lips and then like like your bit here and then my  tongue is swelled shut and it's sticking out like   my tongue is out of my mouth it's far but it's  like as big as my mouth so all your inner linings   that's why your throat was closing off because all  that like that and then once that came out of that   like all the top layers of my skin just started  falling off i've lost like multiple layers of   skin across like my feet are big baby socks so  you've shed no calories on my feet at all really   i've lost so if you want to get soft squishy skin  just gets them better i have no more calluses on   my hands wow that's weird your hair fell out  none of my hair fell out but pretty much just   layers and layers and layers of skin it's just i  think it's like bloated up and swelled up so much   and then it's just all that dead skin but  crazy i got some uh some like nerve stuff that   it's kind of jamie my wife kind of thinks it's  funny um now we know crazy serious but i got one   spot by my belt line one spot on my shoulder if  it hits it kind of feels like somebody hits you   with a cattle prod what and this one doesn't put  me on the ground but if this one when it hits it   put me on the ground and it happens randomly  searing paint and you just go punch like hey   that kind of itches and you just barely gotta  touch it and put me on the ground you're like   really therefore i left here davey started  laughing at me so that should that should go away   um okay little things like that we'll  make sure to laugh when you do that yeah   yeah exactly when i hit the floor i'll get  back up don't worry no yeah touch him again i'm not showing you guys where the points are does that hurt there yeah   we'll ink a button on there you know this  one's auto start this is the emergency shot perfect well cool well i hope you guys enjoyed  the story from brad and uh it's good to have you   in the land of living or not thank you crazy so   yeah and we'll keep eyes on you in case you  get weird like spider not spidery sneaky   sneaky abilities i don't know i'm kind of  like wondering what ability that would be   yeah i don't like spiderman other than shedding  my skin already having points on are you sticking   your tongue out kind of going like this you know  just no i drove here with the windows down on my   truck the whole time and i never once stuck my  tongue out so i don't i think i've used it i   haven't got that part of it yet yeah i'll do  the next test we gotta get alive in the house come back come back yeah cool who needs a cat so what are you gonna  do with the snake oh it's probably getting a full   mount oh sweet it's uh good gonna be the mouth  open and everything no because every time you   do a mouthful open then the fangs are coming  down the taxidermist has to cap the fang and   all the kids are always poking and yeah but if  you ever were to break something off or get back   in the fang i just i just i'd rather have you're  gonna have it coiled up if it's with its rattle   up in the air i'm gonna have it done in more of  a traditional uh don't tread on me mount oh cool   um wrapped around a um elk antler oh sweet that's  gonna be nice so and then we'll auction them off   for 150 thousand dollars so that then you can  pay the hundred thousand dollars of anytime adam   sweet well that's five worth more than  all right cool no i can't auction it   good story thank you don't get bit don't get bit  yeah unless you're brad then it's okay no it's not   okay still then all right right there's number  seven for the day no number eight for the day   yeah number eight for the day that  was a pain in the butt to get out   if it was state ground i would have left it  alone this is bad property and once i'm all gone i'll show you briefly what i just  dug him out of i broke my stick here   to get it out oh look at that guy and that's what i took him  out of i had to move that rock and i got him i couldn't pick up the  rock though until he uh decided to uh go away back behind it and then get  my hands on the side rock and pull it   don't recommend that but after my stick  broke i wasn't gonna try to let him get away   well we're back here at the relocate site i'm  gonna put him up in this little hole over here i'm going to put them right down over here  i've already cleared it i didn't find any   snakes yet but that was a pretty good  hole they could get used to for a night   then they'll figure out where  they want to go to out here wherever they want to go you
