[Music] all right it's b week we've got bees showing up i think tomorrow or the next day i've got a couple out there that we need to check on i think one has bees in it from last year we're gonna go check on them and i need to get this hive ready this was our white hive that we had at the end of last year they end up dying off but there was no signs of anything harming them their their comb all looks great but i don't see any signs of wax mobs or anything so i don't know if they just flew off or they may have just moved out after their queen died but this is the one that i always promised to paint blue and then we'll get it all in place for our bees that are about to come [Music] big yawn last year we painted our beehives red orange yellow green and this one was meant to be blue but we already had bees in it and couldn't paint it till now you're doing a great job bud what color is that blue it's blue [Music] you wanna do that okay [Music] you don't have to paint your beehives but having some kind of weatherproofing on it is good so the wood will last a number of years out in the rain and snow all right it's looking good you excited for bees is there nice bees [Music] all right well the bees showed up yesterday in dramatic fashion but before we get to that we've got to get the blue beehive in place get all their frames ready and then we'll come bring the new bees out here good these are horizontal hives they're a little different than the langstroth hives you might be used to seeing we use both kinds of hives on our farm and they both have things that we like about them and things we don't like about them am i on it all right we've got the yellow hive in place we've got the blue one now in place last year that was white we got one more hive to put out here i'm gonna check the red hive see if there's any bees in there because there were bees in there even up to a few days ago and i don't see anything coming out of there [Music] all right so here's our lego beehive we built this last year and the bees that end up showing up for it came on a really cold week we had something kind of similar almost happened last night we recovered them to a bit we got a new queen for them we just didn't have enough bees to produce more bees and so they end up dying off too soon so we didn't get to fully test the lego beehive now we've got one two three hives to fill with bees today but what i want to know is are there bees in this red hive this one was doing really well over the winter i had a lot of bees in here last few days i haven't seen any coming out of here so i don't know if they're queen died off huh these guys were doing so well they had a really big hive here over the winter oh this one's heavy oh my oh that is all honey yeah whoa it's really heavy so that one's great that'll help feed the other bees i think our next brain oh another one oh [Music] a full frame of honey like half capped and then three fourths capped on that all right so i'm going to clean it out real quick just some dead bees from over winter which is gonna happen but and then we'll just use the three horizontal hives today because they have the best setup for getting started since they all have established comb we'll put the the three beehives in that today and then i'll talk to you about our future plans so last night our bees showed up and i met last night these were supposed to show up in the middle of the afternoon and about two to four was our delivery window and then it got backed up and it was like after 7pm i was not really excited about that we were actually out having dinner and they sat outside for a couple hours when it was in the about 38 to 40 degrees so as soon as i got home they looked alright but i came and brought them into the greenhouse well this is not ideal we've been waiting for our package of bees to arrive for the entire day and they ended up showing at the very end of the day at seven and we had been away from the house so let's see how these bees are doing can you hear buzzing yeah there's some buzzing going on there's some buzzing it's late at night we can't install them right now all right we've got the bees here in the greenhouse got the heater on let's see how they're doing in the morning are ready to jump out of there so we have three containers here three boxes of bees to go put into our three horizontal hives and i'll tell you why we did three here because last year we had a total of six hives and so we're gonna start with these three and then i've got some more coming next month that i'm really excited about but this will give us a good start for our horizontal hives all right so we've got our three bee hives we're gonna separate them out and put them in front of each hive here and then we'll show you how we install each hive all right so we got the bees in front of each hive we'll start with the blue one here we had like three or four frames that were full of honey so we put one into each of these hives so they'll all have a bunch of honey to start with quick and easy way to do this is we're going to open it up there's thousands of we're going to get the queen out and then we're going to set the queen cage in here and hopefully it's got each place is a little different where you get these from but hopefully it will have a sugar cube and that will allow us to set her in here and then they can eat the way into the queen or the queen can eat the way out and then by the time they get to the middle they've gotten used to her scent and they may already be used to her since they've already traveled with her but all right we're on to hive number two the yellow hive all right right here we've got our queen okay so i'm gonna do the same thing here okay so i got the metal through the corner so now it's attached so i don't have to worry about the queen falling down all right we're ready with box number three we're at the red hive so we'll open this up now really easily we'll get the queen out of there right there and we'll put the queen up in here [Music] okay queen is right in there [Music] she's moving around she's doing well that's good all right we've got our queen on there in the queen cage we're gonna go back to the first side of the blue one and see if we can get all the rest of the bees out let's go over there so i don't want to leave it open for tonight i could just go let them stay in there but i want them to get out of this box they're all in there and we've got the queen cage right over here so they're all going to hang out in there tonight and then we can start putting the frames back in let's get the frames cut yellow hides looking great queen cage bees lots of honey to start to help them survive for a while and are queen and look at all those bees it's awesome so really disappointing that this red hive didn't survive and then our flow hive we moved it recently and the bees were still alive in it when we moved it and they died after a little cold spell it got warm in march and then it started to get cold again more freezing weather and i think the both highs were fine and that they started to come out more and i think that's what killed them off so a big bummer but so excited that these three hives are here and these are all carniolans [Music] thanks for your help guys welcome welcome oh you are a big help thank you uriah welcome [Music] all right we're being legit we got a hay ring we got uh feeders we got actual waters we're getting all prepared for these cows that we already had can't quite get it down on it they've already spread it out too much but we'll be ready for the next hay bale all right so it is two days later we're coming out to let the queens out a little cool but all the bees are out and active so we're gonna let the queen out and then they'll start laying eggs and start to grow each of their hives which is what we want to see and so we need to mark them today and so i've got my queen marking case we'll put the queen right into there we'll close the lid up and then we can push her up to the top and then we can mark her and 20 22 is a yellow year and so we'll mark all three queens yellow you don't need to mark your queens i just like to because it makes it really easy to find them i've got her closed down in here which is perfect so now i just need to guide this up so i can get it right on her back oh oh yeah right there i've got her held against the top so she's got a little yellow dot on her back and then she will be ready to release into the hive so i'm going to open her up and let her out and the other bees will see her she see there we go okay she is coming out oh i see her right here she's right there in the corner you can see the little yellow dot right there walking around super beautiful to see i'm very nervous to know that they're doing okay until i see the the hive accept him because i've seen some queens be killed over the past couple years yellow hive's next cage is right there okay queen's inside she's alive okay so we're gonna get her moved in to here waiting for she is in she's in closed in that's perfect right there okay i've got her stuck right there in between so i can mark her back [Music] just a little dot and i can let her down and her queen marked right there there she is there she is there's a yellow hive queen right there love to see that that's great final hive of the day our red hive [Music] bad news on red hive queen's dead in there that's not great so two of our three hives looked amazing queens were alive when we got them we've got them now introduced to the rest of the hive but here at our red hive she's dead queen is right there she's gone oh that stinks that stinks so what i can do from this moment i can contact the company that sent us the bees see if they would do anything for a dead queen i doubt they will we did get a good amount of bees from them so i've got to contact companies that ship queen bees see if any of them can help otherwise i'm going to have to order another box somewhere so that there's a queen with it and try to merge it in with these bees because i just i've got to find a way to get a queen because these guys will have no eggs laid unless there's some still viable from last year's from the bees that died in here if there's any viable that they can grow a queen it's possible but i just don't i don't know i'll see where we can find out mandarin eggs [Music] oh man that's a cool way to send it that's a queen bee yeah before you make it look like this normally they send a little box oh man did i have a hard time finding this queen first i had contacted the the company where we got these bees from and somebody told us on monday they'd send one out it's about a day and a half later i never heard anything back from them and i called them back and they didn't see any order or requests for a new queen and so they were going to ship it out yesterday which was wednesday it was the absolute last day that it could be shipped because we're we're taking a little trip to do some some training for our farm this weekend so i had to have this queen today and so we had two other companies that were in the wings waiting to see if we needed one cent and we were even ready wednesday morning i was going to drive a couple hours each way to go pick up a queen up today and so i was really relieved to see this queen okay queen's alive she wasn't moving so we've taken the cork out of this side this side has a cork and that would let them out immediately this cork right here just keeps the bees that we'll put them in with allows them to get to the the sugar here so they've got a good inch of sugar that they need to eat through on both sides you get the queen out so it'll take a couple days and that's perfect so they'll let themselves out while we're gone on our trip we've got a little development right here that's gotta go all right so i'm going to take my queen cell right here some bees are starting to check it out and i'm going to attach it right under here i need some way to attach it it doesn't have a little metal clip to it so i brought a little zip tie that i can tie around here as soon as these bees start to smell the pheromones from this queen they'll start to to chew on this this little area and they'll start to get this sugar out of there and they can get the sugar from right on the outside and then also from this corner so they're starting to check it out now a lot of bees huh yeah i'm just gonna look for the queen real quick make sure she's all right here's our queen right there in the middle yellow dot and we've got a bunch of bees with their pollen pants look at look at some of these guys have their pollen pollen right on their legs so they're already coming back in with pollen which is amazing so we'll do a quick check up on the blue hive make sure they're all right make sure their queen's all right and then we'll be all set here we go and there's our queen in the blue hive all right we are excited for another big year in bees this is just the start we're gonna have some more hives coming next month i'm so glad we've got three queens for our three hives see you next time [Music] [Music] you
