Is it compact? Yes, more or less--it's only 3" longer than my CUV. But the wheelbase! 118" is comparable to an old land yacht, or a 2000s minivan.

My brain just cannot compute the fact that this thing's the size of a CR-V! I keep thinking this is around the same size as a Golf or something lol

I love the styling. The lighting is so cool. I also like how Hyundai pushed the wheels all the way to the corners of the vehicle to maximize space. This car has almost no overhangs. When you don't have to deal with packaging an engine, exhaust, fuel tank, and driveshaft, you're a lot more flexible with where you can place the wheels. I also really appreciate the Stop/Start button. There's really no need for it, but it is nice to have.

His comments about the front light bar reminded me of the same (short-lived) trend in 80s/90s cars and I went looking for an example. First result was an article by none other than u/Doug-Demuro in 2018.

From the article:

I bring up these light bars now largely because I actually wonder if theyโ€™ll come back. In the days of LED lighting, light bars are a lot more attractive โ€” and rear light bars have returned with a vengeance, now becoming one of the most popular styling trends in the automotive industry.

And, indeed, some futuristic cars have also showed off front light bars in concepts, though none have made it to production โ€ฆ yet. I wouldnโ€™t be surprised if it happens soon.

Well, I guess it only took a few years. But now we finally have some front light bars in the forthcoming Cybertruck and Ioniq 5.

I think they nailed the design

Even the props he brings to the reviews are quirky. First we had the GT3RS watering can. And now we have this watermelon beach ball.

That J1772 (EV Charger) to 110V household outlet is kinda cool. But couldn't they have just put the same outlet in the cargo area? The adapter seems like it adds a step and you have to remember to bring it with you.

I guess u/Doug-DeMuro couldn't find a spot in the parking lot and had to film this in a blank void. I wonder if he saw John Oliver in there.

This car has saw blades for wheels.

It's a Bond villain's dream.

i'm honestly surprised no one has mentioned the massive delta intergrale vibes this design has. I think it is a great looking car

this is the new 2022 hyundai ioniq 5 and it's hyundai's new fully electric crossover suv the electric crossover world is blowing up right now with new models arriving seemingly every week and this is coming out this fall to take on the ford mustang machi the volkswagen id4 and the tesla model y all of which i've reviewed and today i'm going to take you on a thorough tour of the ioniq 5 the latest electric crossover suv challenger [Music] before i get started be sure to check out cars and bids which is my enthusiast car auction website for cool cars from the modern era we've had some great sales recently on cars and bids including this toyota fj cruiser convertible which sold for over 24 thousand dollars very special car this 2018 bmw m5 sold for 75 000 and this tesla roadster sold for just under a hundred thousand dollars a tremendous example of that rare car if you're looking to sell your cool car from the 1980s and up cars and bids is the place to do it you'll get the most interest and the most views and the most bids on your car and if you're looking to buy a cool modern enthusiast car check out cars and bids with great selection and daily auctions at carsandbids.com first a little overview of the ionic 5. now this isn't yet a production car so i can't get drive it but i can take you on a thorough tour and show you all of the details and i'll start with a little overview specifically they're going to offer this in two versions with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive rear wheel drive is the base model with 225 horsepower you can upgrade to all-wheel drive and get 320 horsepower and 0-60 like 5.2 seconds as for range hyundai says they're targeting around 300 miles of range with rear-wheel drive or about 270 miles with all-wheel drive plus there's a fast charging system that can add about 70 miles of range in around 5 minutes if you can find a charger that's powerful enough in terms of sizing the ioniq 5 has 5 seats and even though it kind of looks like a hatchback it is a crossover about the same size as a honda crv or toyota rav4 a little bit shorter in length than a mustang mock e or a tesla model y the ioniq 5 is also kind of strangely named hyundai currently sells a car called the ionic which is an electric or hybrid hatchback so you would think maybe this would be the ionic 2 but it isn't it's the ionic 5. the old ionic model is going away and hyundai is coming out with a whole new range of ionic models starting with this one so today i am going to take you on a thorough tour of the ioniq 5 and show you its quirks and features before it goes on sale this fall all right i'm going to start the quirks and features of the ionic 5 with the quirkiest quirks there are a lot of them but i'm going to start with the quirkiest and that means beginning with the pixels pixels kind of a theme with the ionic 5 and nowhere is that more obvious than the brake lights you can see across the entire rear of the car you have like these little squares that sort of look like pixels when the brake lights are off now take a look when they're on you can see the tail lights on and they look like little illuminated pixels in the back of the car and check it out with the turn signals on you can see again pixels inside the tail light pixels in the back that's a very pixely look back here in the ionic 5. definitely a distinctive look compared to basically everyone else's rear end design and the unusual pixel situation continues up front you thought the rear lights were strange check out the front lights up here again you can see this square shape resembling pixels a very distinctive look up front again and with the turn signal on you can see it also lights up as a square again intended to signify sort of a pixel shape you have the same thing on the mirrors the little turn signal on the mirrors in most cars well in this one it's a row of squares again designed to resemble pixels it's all supposed to give this car kind of a distinctive remember it on the road sort of feel which you certainly will when you see those lights nothing else looks like that and speaking of lighting as if the pixels and squares weren't strange enough how about the top of the bumper right now there's no light on at all it just looks like a pretty regular bumper but you turn on the headlights and you can see these little vertical light strips have now appeared almost out of nowhere on the top of the bumper again to give this car kind of an unusual signature up front these vertical lights go across the entire front you've seen sort of rear light bars well here is a front light bar with these tiny vertical light strips again a very distinctive lighting element in this car especially when it's paired with the weird pixel headlights very strange but the pixels and the lighting are not the quirkiest quirk in this car in fact i think they're probably third place second place goes to the magnetic dashboard okay take a look at this interior you can see there's this little pad over to the left of the dashboard and right here i have a trusty magnet from kramer's bookstore in washington dc i take my magnet and i place it on this pad and it stays up that's because this portion of the dashboard is magnetized so you can stick a magnet on there just like you would put on your refrigerator and if you have like a little reminder you want to stick on there with a magnet well you can put it there or maybe a parking garage ticket something you want to keep in place it's right there on the magnetized part of your dashboard that is a cool little quirk but probably this car's quirkiest quirk is back here with the charge port all right you hold down a little button on the key fob to open up the charge port door you press it you can see it pops open electronically and the first thing you notice when it pops open is more pixels in there and of course this is the place where you charge the car you plug it in and you charge it up but right here i have an adapter that you can get as an accessory with the ionic 5. if you plug in this adapter you can use it to charge stuff so you take charge from the car's battery and you use the car to basically charge stuff for example right now i am using this adapter to power an air compressor that is blowing up my little watermelon beach ball and you can see it is actually blowing up the beach ball the hyundai ioniq 5 is blowing up my beach ball which is something i never really thought i would say but that's what's happening and hyundai considers this to be a real world application for instance you go to the beach and you bring all your inflatable beach toys well you don't have to inflate them beforehand you can blow them up with your car's charger port in the parking lot if you have one of these of course there are all sorts of other things you might want to power using your car's giant battery and so you can do that a pretty cool feature in the ionic 5. [Music] and next up we move back in the ionic 5 to go over the rest of the interesting quirks and features starting with the fact that the steering wheel doesn't have a logo in the center of it no hyundai emblem here doesn't say ionic it doesn't say anything which is tremendously unusual and in fact everywhere you look in this interior you won't see hyundai or ioniq written pretty much anywhere not on the door panels not on the dashboard it says nothing hyundai says they're trying to keep it really minimalist in here and so they got rid of all the logos and that includes the one in the center of the steering wheel where basically everybody puts their logo not in this car with that said one thing you do notice when you get in here more pixels on the door panel you can see this little line of pixels intended to tie in the exterior pixels to the inside you also have on the door sill ionic is written out that's pretty much the only place that appears in this interior and that's covered up while you're driving but next to ionic you can see five is written in pixels this is the ionic 5 and they're celebrating that on the door sill with the pixels next up another interesting quirk in this vehicle is the center console you can see it's right here between the seats it doesn't really look all that unusual you got an armrest you have some storage below that and some cup holders the unusual part is it can move you stick your hand here there's a little latch you pull it and then you can push it back so the rear passengers have easier access to this front center console and it's sort of out of the way up front now there are a few reasons why you might want to move the center console forward or backwards depending on where you're sitting it can offer more convenience or just give you more room if you want to move it out of the way but there's one other benefit in the ionic you can see mounted below the back seats there is a household style power outlet here and you can plug in a laptop to this power outlet and then move the center console back and kind of use it as a table that you can work on if you want to from the back seat which is a pretty cool feature because the plug's right there and then a table can slide right into place and that's a nice little idea in the ionic 5. next up another interesting quirk in the ionic 5 is the gear selector which is this big silver piece sticking off the steering column in most cars with a column shifter you move it into place but not here instead you only move the end you move it kind of down if you want to go into reverse or you move the end up if you want to go into drive neutral is obviously in the middle and if you want to put it in park you press the big p button at the end and then you're in park and that is the rather odd gear selector in the ionic 5. and speaking of controls worth noting ionic 5 has a start stop button you get in the car and to turn it on you press this big button here and then it gets started i mentioned that because some evs don't have a start stop button you just climb inside put your foot on the brake and then they sense that you're in and then they're ready to go but the ionic 5 does have that button you use that to start it and of course to turn it off to stop it when you're done driving now next to that start stop button you can see the climate controls are mounted here not physical buttons for the climate controls instead they're on this sort of like capacitive touch screen situation and that's how you adjust all of your climate controls fan speed auto fan placement temperature it's all right there in the center on that screen instead of traditional buttons now speaking of screens in this car you probably saw earlier that there are two large screens mounted on the dashboard one in the center and one for the gauge cluster these are both 10 inch screens they're the same size and the one in the center is fairly similar to what you get in other newer hyundai models it's fairly intuitive version of their infotainment screen although i will say one thing i like is this ev section you press that you can see the car's range displayed on this big green carpet like telling you exactly how much more range you have to drive on the green carpet i think that's kind of cool one disappointment of this center screen is that's where the controls are for the heated and cooled seats so even though you have your climate controls on the center screen here that's not where your heated and cooled seat controls are to turn them on you got to go into the screen into a menu and only then can you turn them on something so many automakers over complicate when really it should just be a simple push of a button kind of disappointing to see that buried in a menu here but otherwise fairly standard fare for a hyundai infotainment system fairly responsive very intuitive and it even has sounds of nature meaning that you can listen to nature sounds while you drive along instead of music or the radio just these pre-loaded nature sounds like this one now next up we move over to the other screen in here the gauge cluster screen which is rather unusual you can see in this screen you have like the car in the middle and it is flanked by two like runway looking things very odd the left runway looking thing that's your speedometer and it will go up as your speed continues to increase and you can see there's a digital readout of your speed right above that over on the right that runway looking thing shows your power or your charging use depending on exactly how you're driving the car whether you're accelerating hard or regenerating using braking it will show that there on that little runway in the gauge cluster screen both of those things are rather unusual and kind of a strange way to display it but that's what you get in this car and by the way speaking of that gauge cluster screen you can change the look of it by changing the drive mode you press this little button on the steering wheel you push that and you can cycle through different drive modes and you can see the gauge cluster screen changes sort of corresponding to which drive mode you're in if it's sport or eco or normal whatever it will change for each drive mode and by the way speaking of the drive mode controller on the steering wheel another interesting control on the wheel is paddle shifters you have paddle shifters here which seems kind of strange an electric car where there really aren't any gears the paddle shifters are not intended to change gears instead they change the amount of regen you're doing with the braking system so you pull the negative paddle back and you'll be doing more regen it'll sort of slow the car down whereas if you go into the positive paddle it will dial that back and do less regen and that's how the paddle shifters work in this car i'm seeing that more and more with electric vehicles the paddle shifters controlling regen by the way one other item worth noting on the steering wheel you can see on the right this little touch pad has a lot of different controls for a lot of different driver assistance systems like steering auto braking various different things unfortunately since i can't drive this car i can't demonstrate that or check out how that technology works but pretty soon i'll be able to do that and i'll provide sort of an update to this video letting you know how all of the driver assistant systems work in the ionic 5. next up another interesting item in here the way it feels in this interior very airy very light and open and that's because of the sunroof you have a massive sunroof going across basically the entire roof with no crossbar in the middle a lot of vehicles with a big panoramic roof have a crossbar but not this one now the drawback to that is you can't actually open the sunroof it's just this fixed piece of glass but it does let in a lot of light provide for like an open airy cabin feel when you're sitting in this car and by the way speaking of the feel of this car one other interesting item the driver seat you can adjust it so that it is laying back not completely flat but very far back so that you can sleep in it this is a benefit hyundai came up with you're on a road trip you're getting tired you want to take a nap you don't have to like try to sleep uncomfortably in an upright seat you can actually lay the seat back and sleep pretty comfortably and you can see there's even a foot rest down here which will extend out giving your legs a little bit more support if you stretch out while you're sleeping you don't see too many automatic foot rests and driver seats or driver seats that lay back but this car has it which is a neat touch and next up i'm going to move on to the back seat in the ionic 5. but before i do that i want to talk getting into the car and specifically door handles now when you walk up you can see the door handles are nice and flat with the body which looks very cool no ugly protruding door handle but you're probably wondering how exactly do you get in well you walk up to the car with the key fob you press the unlock button and then the door handles pop out as you can see and then you just grab the door handle and open up the door take another look at that press the button they pop out and then you can open them now when you're done you park somewhere you want to lock the car just press the lock button on the key fob and then you can see the door handles go back to being flat against the body once again now that the car is locked take another look press the button and the door handles are flat now it's worth noting there's one other way you can open the door handles as well if you have the key fob in your pocket you walk up to the car you can tap this little square on the driver's door handle and then the door handles will pop out you don't actually have to pull out the key fob and press the unlock button and it's the same deal when you want to go to lock the car if you have the key fob in your pocket you don't have to get it out just to lock the doors instead you just tap the door handle and you can see they lock right up and then you can walk away and you don't have to get out the key fob pretty cool but anyway next up i'm going to climb in back the ionic 5 so i unlock the doors the door handle pops out and then i get in and the first thing you notice when you climb into the back of this car is it's tremendously roomy back here exceptionally roomy for a compact crossover the size of a rav4 you get a lot more room sitting in the back of the ioniq 5 especially legroom knee room than you would in just about any other compact suv this size this is pretty impressive packaging in the back seat of this vehicle it's surprisingly huge and the main reason it's so big back here is the wheelbase in the ionic 5 is tremendously long that's basically the distance between the two wheels very long longer in fact in the hyundai palisade which is like a mid-size to full-size suv this is a compact crossover and it has a larger wheelbase and that means more passenger space and that is a pretty neat trick but when you think about it it makes sense that an electric car would have a longer wheelbase you can move the front wheels pretty far forward because you don't have an engine there that you're competing with for space so this car has very short front overhang as you can see because the front wheels have been moved so far up and that gives you more passenger space now the drawback to having such a long wheelbase on such a relatively short vehicle is it looks like a hatchback when you first walk up to this it really does look like a hatchback not an suv or a crossover and it doesn't have much ground clearance either which enhances the hatchback look but from a sizing perspective and they're offering with all-wheel drive pricing will be similar to other crossovers this is intended to be a crossover even though it certainly has a hatchback look when i first saw a picture of it i thought hatchback for sure but no it is a crossover that long wheelbase is just sort of deceptive and since i'm talking design let's go over some of the interesting quirks and features on the outside of this car to me the most notable is the overall shape you can see unlike a lot of the other electric vehicles in the market this doesn't really have a teardrop shape from your perspective you can see it's a lot more squared off and boxy like a traditional crossover but that's actually a bit of a trick you see there's a spoiler back here mounted at the top of the hatchback and air passes underneath the spoiler in back so from a profile it does have sort of a boxier elongated roofline look thanks to this spoiler but actually it has a relatively similar teardrop shape to other electric vehicles it's just that the air is passing under this spoiler in back and so it doesn't quite look like it has the teardrop shape which is an interesting element of design and in fact this car has several interesting design elements integrated all the way around for instance this character line going down the side is not something you see very often it is very distinctive to the look of this car this sort of diagonal line going down both doors certainly an unusual line and it gives this car a distinctive look also unusual is the hood situation in this car you can see the front hood kind of wraps around all the way to the wheel arches in front and that's so there's no visible like hood lines like so many other cars have instead you have this sort of wrap-around hood which frankly looks pretty good pretty cool and kind of a futuristic touch and speaking of unusual lines on the outside of this car how about these going around the wheel arch these sort of unusual lines i guess intended to convey motion from the wheels and from the tires kind of a strange look but it also looks a little futuristic and kind of cool and speaking of strange lines out here how about the wheels themselves a very unusual design you don't see that one too often sort of a snowflake star very complicated wheel design but again pretty distinctive for this car now next up i mentioned the unusual look of the hood a minute ago but how about what's under here obviously there's no gasoline engine so what do you have that would be well a little compartment here you can see this plastic compartment that says ev you lift up the lid and you can see cargo storage not much but there's some storage up here and of course you also have some mechanical components under here like some fluid reservoirs that sort of thing there's a little bit of storage up front now unfortunately you can't open this front compartment from the key fob you actually have to go into the driver's foot well and pull this latch and then you can get it open so it's not the most convenient storage area but there is a little storage up front in addition to what's in back and so next up let's talk about what's in back the cargo area back here you have a power tailgate of course and when you open it up you can see there is a pretty large cargo area in here again this car is a pretty impressive use of space although i will say that sloping roof design you can see it a lot more when you're inside looking up back here and that does rob some of the cargo space on the top if you're loading in like a large boxy item it might not fit but you do have good cargo storage space a good big flat floor back here you have good space where you can store cargo other items in back and next up since i'm outside the ionic five one other neat quirk that this car has is the ability to move it while you're outside of it take a look at the key fob here you can see these two buttons one says p with an arrow pointing up the other says p with an arrow pointing down if you're outside of the car and you press and hold down those buttons you can see the car will start to move the theory here is if you're parked in a very tight parking space like in your building parking garage and you can't really get in because it's too tight well you can just move the car out and then climb in it there now the car won't like come to you and make a turn across a long parking garage like tesla's summon but this is still a pretty cool feature you can like remote control drive your hyundai ioniq 5. that's pretty neat and finally two other important items with the ionic 5 that i want to cover now pricing we don't really know pricing but you can assume it'll be competitive with other electric crossovers like volkswagen id4 ford mustang machi that sort of thing so i'd expect it to be priced similar to those vehicles as for rollout this goes on sale this fall but not in all states only in california and the other states that use california's emissions plus like the larger states like texas and florida they're all getting the car this fall after that sometime in 2022 hyundai will be expanding availability of the ionic 5 to other states as for the name i mentioned earlier it was a little confusing ionic 5 why is it called that not like ionic 2 like what does the 5 mean well it turns out that signifies its positioning in the ionic lineup hyundai says more ionic cars are coming including the ionic 6 which will be a sedan a little larger than this and the ionic 7 which will be like an suv the size of a palisade so sort of like bmw has 3 series 5 series 7 series indicating the positioning in the lineup that's the case here too and this is the ionic 5 i guess sort of in the middle five position in the lineup that's the story on the name and so that's the hyundai ionic five this has some cool futuristic styling and some cool futuristic touches and it's perfectly timed to arrive just as the electric crossover segment is heating up this one looks promising with some great quirks and i'll be very much looking forward to driving it later this year but for now those are the quirks and features of the hyundai ioniq [Music] 5. you
