The 2 Bibles Amish Use (& Other Books)

so which bible do the amish use now the amish are essentially trilingual and that means that at home and amongst themselves they speak a german language or dialect called pennsylvania german or pennsylvania dutch as it's known they also know english which they will speak when uh english people english in other words non-amish people are present and that's the language they used to do business and communicate with the outside world but they also would have familiarity with high german which is the language of church and in church they would use the the german language martin luther bible for an english version the amish typically used the king james version although some amish you may see the new international version the niv so pennsylvania german and pennsylvania dutch is not generally a written language so when amish communicate by writing like in letters or notes to one another they're going to use english typically but they actually have created a pennsylvania dutch bible and you can you can find that online in fact there's even a pennsylvania dutch pennsylvan pennsylvania german bible app uh which you can get on in the google play store i just checked so but that's not really the the bible most amish typically use and they'll have the the german and the english martin luther and typically the king james version and you'll often have a bible which is uh like a bilingual bible which has a german on one side and a corresponding english on the other while we're on the topic some other books that are important to the amish one is the ausbund which is the hymn book that the amish used in church this is actually the longest lived song book or hymn book in continuous use and it's hunt it's got hymns that are hundreds of years old these were composed by the early kind of anabaptist forefathers of the amish and there are no musical notes in the osbourne the tunes are learned by by ear they're passed along and if you've ever heard amish sing in church it has a very specific sound to that you can actually hear it on youtube there's some videos of irish church singing [Music] another important book is called the martyrs mirror which is a historical account of the suffering of christian martyrs from uh very early martyrs to the on through to the anabaptists which were persecuted in some cases that were killed that are the predecessors of the amish other books you'll see in amish homes are bible story books for children you'll see traditional children's books traditional readers but some amish will have spiritually themed religious themed magazines and books some amish even read kind of more popular religious authors like john maxwell or max lucado rick warren so thanks for watching if you liked the video subscribe give us a like leave us a comment and we'll talk to you next time
