Look INSIDE an Amish Home

you may be surprised to learn that you can actually find a lot of amish homes for sale online this is actually a great chance to see what amish homes look like on the inside you'll see a whole wide variety of amish homes on websites like zillow some very plain amish homes also some quite progressive amish homes i recently saw an amish home that was selling for over a million dollars i really enjoy looking at some of these listings because it gives you a great look inside all the different rooms of the amish home you can kind of see how the amish live now why would an amish person list their home for sale online the thing about this is these listings tend to be the amish in the smaller settlements you know why is that well in a larger community like lancaster county or homes county ohio you don't really see homes for sale in this way those homes are typically quickly bought by amish people but if you have a community of just five or ten households you don't necessarily have a lot of amish buyers in that community you just don't have the same size market among the amish so that's why a lot of times you'll see amish families put up their homes for sale to non-amish buyers so today i wanted to take a look at a home in kentucky this is in a community near the town of hillsboro kentucky and i visited this community back in december this is in some ways a planar community and you'll see that reflected in some of the things in this home i'll also tell you the price of this property at the end so you can try to guess if you like this is actually a 3200 square foot home pretty standard look as for an amish home you've got two stories kind of simple you know white exterior big front porch metal roof looking inside let's have a look here in the kitchen first has a really in some ways picture-perfect look about it you see the very long kitchen table like a plastic kind of rubber type covering on the table that's typical for amish homes it's a very durable kind of material multiple clocks on the walls you've got the fly paper hanging from the ceiling you've got the cook stove there hats and jackets and things hung on the wall baby seats pots and pans stacked up neatly china hutch in the background amish families do often have and display china moving into the living room and now often these kitchens and living areas will be kind of one big kind of wide open space and that's one thing you'll notice in amish homes they tend to have very wide open spaces and that's good for large families of course that's also good for distribution of light you know some of these homes they'll just have like one or two light sources that are you know maybe a propane lamp like a wheeled cabinet depending on the group now this group we can see they've got some oil lamps okay and that tends to be a sign of a planar group but they've also got the uh metal heat shield which you can see in the center of the ceiling here and that's for hanging a pressurized gas lamp or something of that sort hickory rockers very common in amish homes now you tend to see these in the planer homes these have kind of a little bit more fancy elaborate coverings whereas in a more progressive amish home you would see the stuffed upholstered furniture couches even recliners small carpets there's a rag rug moving to the bedrooms this home actually has seven bedrooms so not surprising for an amish home to have that many with the size of their families eight to ten or even more children being common so you can see the parents bedroom you'll have the crib in there typically for the baby kids bedrooms as well and some of these can be quite colorful notice there's like hunting gear there may be a gun deer antlers on the on the walls you see here there's a native american i think they're called dream catcher on the wall there those are very popular some of these very colorful you know in how they decorate their rooms with the blues and the turquoise colors and now this group doesn't actually have bathrooms this group uses outhouses okay let's go downstairs to the basement now this basement is not super cozy inviting or not really at all and some amish basements are like that they're very kind of rough like this some amish basements are going to be set up kind of as another living space where you may have a couch and you may have finished floors of some sort and generally are more inviting than what you see here but we do see hand goods lined up there on the wall every amish home pretty much is going to have some canning going on you know here's a look at the washroom the ringer washer which is common among the amish and in this room you've got kind of a caning area you may have like a second sink in these types of spaces it's also kind of like a mud room here where you've got the boots after coming in from outside and the windows here all have some type of a curtain it's kind of a misconception that amishams don't have curtains i did a video on that so that's your look inside the home i'm going to show you outside the home in the property as well here in a second but first we've got a bonus because this property is actually being sold with a second home on the same property something like what's called a dotty house which is a smaller home built on a main property where the grandparents might live okay and sometimes the dotty house is actually attached to like the main farmhouse the grandparents would live in this smaller home for example after they retire from farming now this is a separate dotty house this one's a good bit smaller if we look inside here very homey and kind of inviting look as well picture perfect little kitchen here again you've got a stove there you've got similarly pots and pans and all your coffee mugs lined up on the wall there you've got the popular with the amish calendars with the images of nature very typical now we look at the sitting area or the living room area and you've got again the hickory rockers on the wall in the left here you'll see what looks like a birthday chart where they have a list of all the family members in their birthdays and kind of a decorated chart i've also got an office chair here too and that's something you'll see with the amish looks like they've got some sort of a desk there this dotty house or this extra house has got a two bedrooms those are simple pleasant rooms we can also have a look at the washroom here and on the floor there they've got something they've been canning as well having a look outside let's have a look inside the barn you've got your buggies parked in there now you'll notice these buggies don't have a slow-moving vehicle triangle on them and it reminds you kind of the scorching trooper amish buggies interestingly this group i believe removes their slow-moving vehicle triangle when they're not on the road and then when they're traveling on the road they would attach it to the back you've got a very makeshift barnyard style basketball hoop there looks like it's sagging a little bit i don't know if that's been dunked on a lot or if it's just showing its years just taking a wider look at the property in the lane here got some beautiful aerial views giving you a picture of the property now this is a total of 28 acres of land you've got two homes with a combined 4 100 plus square feet between them a total of nine bedrooms so what's the price of this property well i can tell you it's it's currently listed at 379 000. i'll just give a shout out to the listing agent that's angie stevens of homeland real
