welcome bishop TD jakes Wow how's everybody you miss me too how amazing Wow [Music] it has been a long time Tulsa we love you Tulsa loves you Oh buddy bishop first of all it's an honor to have you here thank you I never yeah I'm still in this field I'm like pinch me this doesn't feel real that you are here I feel like I'm in a dream I've admired you for so long and you you shared this on the drive here you remember coming I was a little boy and he grew up I didn't know who to shake hands with it there I was like you you spoke to my soul every time you came you ignited something inside me and your voice your words just your anointing and what God uses you to do set people free and cause people to rise up and become who God's called them to be yeah how many y'all can relate to that your life has been shaped and impacted by his voice and his words and I'll never forget one of the most impactful moments in my life really I felt a calling in 2004 you came we were at the maybe Center and packed out auditorium like tonight and you spoke on he motions one of your books at that time you shared about the attack the enemy is attacking the man I remember coming down to that altar call just crying but you've said you've helped so many people get set free and we're just so honored to have you here I don't even know what to say but I know you've been preaching all weekend thank you for coming on a Sunday night after you've preached in your own church brother blowing and you've got a brand new book out before we jump into this book just for those that are new how many all have never heard bishop TD jakes speak before raise your hands you've never heard him speak alive raise your hands Wow would you just maybe kind of introduce yourself to some of these people here that are that are new to your story new to you where should I begin I think it is important when you look at a person that you don't think that their story begins when their ministry did because the ministry is what you do and Thomas is who I am and and I think it is who you are that it informs what you do it gives you uniqueness to what you do so my mother was a schoolteacher and she did other things she was equal employment opportunities representative for the state of West Virginia but most of my childhood she was a schoolteacher my father ran a janitorial service there talk about him quite a bit in the book and of what he taught me when he started a business with a mop and a bucket and ended up with 52 employees back in the 60s yeah he was relentless we we grew up in a faith-based home but not extremely so just mildly so I probably was the one that gravitated more into being involved in church there most of my family I thought that I was called to music ministry I thought that by myself I started playing for the choir when I was 11 years old and I had this these visions of grandeur of turning into Andre Crouch or somebody in lab you know it would have been nice Walter Hawkins or somebody like that but it's funny how you can have interest and admiration for something but purpose somewhere else and I noticed that when I would put my quorum to saying that people got more blessed off of the introduction than they did off the choir but that is what I really had an encounter with God as a teenager where he called me to preach and I was terrified that nobody would believe that I was called a priest and I was too young to preach most of the preachers in my era at that time were older men and I had no point of reference for young people called a ministry and it was really horrific for me to think that I would go out there nobody would believe and God dropped me over in the Jeremiah chapter 1 and convinced me I wasn't the first young person who felt ill-equipped for the ministry Wow out of that my ministry was born and I started into ministry at 19 after a brief non-spiritual sabbatical and mic buffs and stuff like that and I started in the ministry at 19 I got married I started pastoring when I was 22 I got married when I was at 24 I was on national television at 30 my life was so much more than what I would have ever expected I grew up in Charleston West Virginia there about 40,000 people in Charleston so I had no idea when I hear people today talking about being big you know and I had no concept of that the the largest church in our city would see the thousand people and that was first Baptists and most churches in our city were around two hundred a hundred Cedars so I had no concept of big I never wanted to be famous I prayed to be effective Wow yeah I prayed to be effective you are anymore you know I Paul I found out that if you are effective effective will bring fame a friendless found anything to be frank it's not anything to aspire toward it is something that you endure yeah it's something that you endure frame robs you of something that money cannot buy normalcy privacy seclusion which is a healthy part of mental health to be able to have sabbaticals away from crowds even Jesus escaped crowds and times to renew himself so to all of you that are that might be out there thinking you know God make me famous change him for her today it's far better to be effective and I tell people all the time everybody famous isn't great and everybody grated and famous it's really good yeah you have you've spoken into president's lives you've been on CNN Fox News you've been all over I'll never forget listening to the song that Kirk Franklin had you do I think it was 12 years ago and he calls you and he's trying to figure out you know and you're speaking to him and honestly that song made me cry do you remember that one tell me y'all remember that song 911 yeah I wonder what I so Kirk calls me up he's actually my neighbor now he lives about five houses down from me at the time there was a little bit more distance between our houses but he calls me up and asked me when I come this to you or lay down some tracks with him and and Kirk is like it's right after stomping and he's you know jumping over chairs and furniture you know so I put all these leather pants to put me in the mood yeah because you're gonna be able to curtain Franklin and I'm old enough to be his father I have to kind of I have to kind of you know three then some Jimi Hendrix's I'm out of love - yeah - to parts of this about I don't know but uh we we laid down those tracks and almost extemporaneous Lee we did almost no retakes on it and it just happened almost magically in the studio I still remember that line anthrax terrorist attacks but hold on I'm not done yet you know I still amazed it you're up here okay I'm sorry Bishop you talked about the importance just what you shared first off let's talk about this book because you so much of what you're sharing is in this book how many y'all have gotten the sword yet if you haven't gotten it tonight's your night to get it because you're gonna want it and I read it cover-to-cover in four days I was so excited when you were coming and I got in the book but this book inspires me it's so different than any of your books absolutely you've written a lot of great ministry books books that help people spiritually this book's different yeah talk about what inspired you to write something in a different genre I'm different come on I'm different I've had a different set of experiences I've set at the intersection of the Faith Movement the the church and and entertainment with television producing movies and films and done business with people of all walks of life in a way that most ministers have not so I get a pretty panoramic view of the holistic experience of socialization because I have friends who are homeless and I have friends who are presidents you get a pretty broad view of human experience I've traveled all over the world I've set with ten heads of state three living presidents I've been in the back room when things were tough I've been in Katrina when they were pulling dead bodies Catrina I've seen I've been on death row and people were about to be executed you can't have that many experiences and be and then be myopic in terms of your vision you you can't do that you can't the greatest thing to me that God could give you is exposure and exposure to change the way you think we think what we think and the way we think about whatever it is we think based on the exposure we've had and once you're exposed to more it changes the way you think about a lot of things when the only way you are exposed is through the media there is a certain flavor that comes in the water based on the media you're exposed to and because I work in media and in faith I get to see both sides of the world I wrote this book about entrepreneurship because I listened at the debate our country is heavy I listen at the frustration of the Rust Belt states I listened had a middle America feeling like they're left out of the narrative I grew up in West Virginia where the coal mines shut down I remember Birmingham steel and Pittsburgh steel and I remember when Dayton in Pennsylvania were all booming and Iulia carbot was up and and blue-collar workers could get a great job and make a great living I listened at what they said I listened at what the inner city is screaming from from Harlem to watts to southside of Chicago they're actually saying the same thing I don't know why they're at odds with each other they're all frustrated by the same thing the lack of opportunities the lack of singing of future were almost like rats trapped in a box we have started gnawing at each other we have forgotten what made America great we have forgotten what made America great it's not the big PA man it's not the big fortune 500 companies that move their businesses in and out based on taxes and whatnot they hire about 30% of the of the workforce in America 70% of Americans or higher work for small businesses this country was built on the backs of people who were entrepreneurial who were relentless who had a vision for themselves who rose up out of the dust and ashes of obscurity and decided that they had a dream for themselves and their family and they fought to make it happen yeah and then I owned it to our children your generation and a little bit younger than you the Millennials in particular because we told them a story that didn't happen we told him a story that was true when we said it but by the time they detained it it wasn't true anymore we told them that if you go to school and you get a good education you're gonna come out there's gonna be a job waiting for you come on and to their credit they went to school and they got a good education and when they got out of school they had a great bill waiting on them with no jobs and now they're back on their mother's couch even Kellogg's cornflakes and 12 o'clock no trend to trying to figure what a what do I do with myself and I wrote this book to say that if you didn't get a good job you have to create a good job come on yeah you have to agree the job yeah you have to carve out a niche in the earth for yourself and be creative you must realize that we were created by a Creator who created us in his likeness and in his image and if our Creator is a creator then I have to be creative somewhere down inside of every single solitary person in this room is creativity whether you tap into it or not we were not meant to follow a marching band and follow it behind other people's creativity and not discover our own you have creativity you have passion and you have purpose and giving people the freedom and the world with all to build that I suddenly realized when I sat down to write this book then everything I ever experienced I had to build from the ground up I never inherited anything I mean my father gave me a watch and and I appreciate it and you know my parents weren't so much into what they left to you but they were masterful at what they left in you they were masterful I love what you say about that in the book - about your mother and your father what they taught you yeah I know you're gonna keep well now well this chair is so loaded it's about to pop my father is sitting here my mother laude here both of my grandmothers are sitting here all of my ancestors right up to the ones that got off the boat from slavery are here I've been back in Nigeria where I am rooted from from the evil tribe that all of my ancestors are sitting in this chair my mother used to say when you see a turtle sitting on a fencepost you know he didn't get there by himself so when I start talking about my parents I grew up at a time that your heroes were people within your reach and and the people who mentored you were in your neighborhood they weren't necessarily your heroes because they were hip-hop artists or because they threw a football or because they could do golf well they were you are they were blue-collar people who work double shifts that got awful late and fed their families and fed the dog and took the trash out and taught you how to be a man and how to stand for something and go after something be something do something with your life and so I know it sounds a little bit old-school but it's important because we as a people in this country in many ways have lost our way we're in a fog of confusion and it's not really our fault because I've worked in media I realized we are manipulated by media for ratings for profit margins we there is an argument that didn't start on the sidewalks in this country it started in the producers rooms a press booth who pitted us to fight each other by showing us certain images and ideas as if it were the truth when it was only a truth and we walked away with the lopsided view of the yeah as they did it all for money yeah they did it all for money they do it all for ratings because because good news doesn't sell it that drive up ratings altercations drives up ratings ratings drives up the fees you can charge for advertisement advertisement makes more money and so the people that we see fighting with the POV a point of view on television are often hired to fight Wow I don't know good this is deep because it's changing people's minds they are hired to fight and they get when they could do fighting on camera they go to lunch and we go out shoot each other so damaging I wrote the book to call us back to our god-given gifts and talents to building our own dreams you know I have to sound like an old fuddy-duddy maybe because I am but I grew up when you ate something you knew what you were eating you know a biscuit was really a biscuit because because grandma knew what she put in the biscuit today it looks like a biscuit it smells like a biscuit but you don't know what in the world is in the biscuit you know that is much like our world today if you don't build it you don't know what's in it and so a lot of people are afraid to build from the ground up because we are shown instant success yes overnight wonders yes somebody put something on YouTube and they exploded and now they're famous and then we got people who are famous for being famous it used to be you were famous because you're worse you did something now you just famous you just famous yeah and we got everybody who wants to walk around and just be famous but but the first thing God said wasn't be famous it was be fruitful right be fruitful yes and it being fruitful makes you famous and that's okay but don't don't set out to - I have the meringue and I have no lemon up under it you know you know trust and no cobbler and you you you want to be able to do something with your life that matters and to model that to your children and to your children's children in case they are thrown into a situation that nothing magical happens this is a very practical pragmatic book it's not full of fluff and I didn't write this is gonna get me in trouble I didn't write it like preachers write these kind of books because they make me sick say all they do is tell you spin around God is gonna bless you we're coming alive in 2005 it's gonna get fix in 2006 everybody's going to heaven in 2007 or it's stuff like the wealth of the unjust is laid up for the just that's good but how do I pull it down that's what's needed right now how do I pull it down teach me how how do I get it now so Sunday morning inspiration leads to Monday morning frustration if inspiration doesn't have information in it then after a while people just say all that doesn't work and they walk away let me interject one more thing and then we're going to where you want to go I got tired of people coming up in prayer lines asking for prayer for stuff that God doesn't do we have gotten so away from what God does we don't ask God to do God stuff we ask God to be human stuff if you got a problem then a check will fix you don't need to ask God to do it God doesn't write checks he doesn't write checks men write checks man paper so I got people coming up praying you know praying that I'll get a house or praying that my mortgage to get caught up or praying that my car didn't go to foreclosure that's not stuff you bother heaven with right you said let me let me explain it this way God has never made a table I see these tables up here God has never made a table he's never made a chair not one time in all of the ages has God ever made a table or a chair not once God makes trees and once he's made the tree he's through with it it's up to you to make the table and chair come on talk about it you're the servant yes and we are asking God to do man stuff if you want God to do something I see to part the Red Sea ask him to turn water into wine ask him to raise the dead you know has got to heal something that's incurable ask God to do stuff that gets God started don't ask God to do stuff you could ask your Uncle Willie forward because when you bring God down to a human level there's nobody left to handle the god stuff that only God can do there's nobody to stop hurricanes and tornadoes there's nobody to stop bombs coming from North Korea there's nobody who's got a divine hand they can reach down and do something supernatural that we cannot do because we have brought God down to Santa Claus so I didn't take the approach that the church is accustomed to I talked about corporate structures I talked about building a corporate structure for your vision I talked about whether it's a not for profit or for profit and the legalities and the complications between the two I talked about do you hire family or not to hire family what happens when you do her family because you talk about working with your family working with your own family what you gain what you lose are their assets and liabilities if you bring your wife to work their assets and liabilities to doing it it's one thing to have a found a problem at the house it's another thing to have a problem at work and it's another thing to have a problem in both places that neither of you get the cooldown period to recalibrate so making those kinds of decisions in choices I talked about not quitting your job and jumping into some crazy pursuit but gradually testing the waters the I talked about serving what you would like to be because they're learning you respect is your anointing you receive a lot of times doing a particular type of job is not what you imagined it to be and so to serve somebody who's doing what you would like to do can cause you to have a more realistic perspective as to whether I really want to do this or not I shall gain you understand well yes I wanted to open up a restaurant I love to feed people see I love to feed good I wanted to open up a restaurant as a kid I want to open up a restaurant all of my life I said there's gonna be a dam to open up a restaurant but when I got with some friends who run restaurants and I saw how much work and time it consumes and how you can't leave the restaurant because they're gonna either steal from the cash register or throw food out the back door that you've got to have somebody on 24 hours and they are almost protecting the restaurant I thought this is a good theory but everything that's a great theory is not a great reality so we talked about that in the book we talk about misses we talk about some very practical what do you do when you have the vision but you don't have the money yeah because the leading cause is to people to go on out of business is not having access to capital okay economic resources and the second thing is not having access to mentoring human resources and between those two things I begin to talk about how to build it from the ground up yeah there are a lot of great books out there about what to do if you've got five investors putting in a half a million dollars a piece but if I got five investors but then I have two million dollars piece I don't need a book I can figure it out from there pretty good I'm talking to people who have a vision and don't have the provision I'm talking to Millennials who are tired of sitting on their mama's couch I'm talking to people who have bought into the myth that because you're 67 year old and you think your life is over because you got a retirement watch and yet you are productive and you're bright and you are literally aging because I'm getting stiff because you don't move Wow and I am telling you that you can be fruitful in every season of your life I'm telling you that Harland Sanders was in the old Social Security when he started KFC Wow that he was in his 60s when he started his business that's amazing and before you go out to the farm and start milking the cow and giving up on life that there's still some value with you and there's still some things you can do with my life and your strengths that you can still sword you know I got it I got to give a shout out my grandma is sitting on the front row gran-gran she's 94 years I've grown mostly I wouldn't be here without her he works full time 40 hours a week Watts she is what you're talking about keeps you young it keeps your knees going in that back going you sit on the body that stated it that stays moves in motion stays in motion you sit home watching that TV and you will turn into something so decrepit you can't breathe have you ever gotten sick and stayed in the bed so long that your body was weak we have to have something to move we have to have something to fight yes we have to have something to make us stand and one of the things I talk about in the book Paul that that might be shocking for a preacher to say we have to have something that scares us right yeah you have to have this scared me no I was so scared to invite you to come and I'm scared we don't think but there's but like you said what you're talking about in this book we need that we need something that scares us yeah get out of here let me tell you something your greatest miracle will always be in your scary place this game God is going to do the greatest work in your life with your eyes peel back like this [Laughter] why do you think Joseph though he slay be God shall I trust him when when the Wright brothers of whom the book is metaphorically discussing that the audacity for a grown man with two grown men with no degree in middle America standing on the ground to look up at an eagle in the heaven and say I belong up there do you know how ridiculous it was they didn't have the money they didn't have the education they didn't have the training and they said I belong up there and they built a machine to reach their dream that's what business is a machine you build to reach her dream what's know let's talk about the Eagles for a minute because the the mother Eagle after sitting on eggs protecting it with her life until they hatch and going out and swimming an attacking prey and bringing back food until they grow then turns around the same beat that fed them and the same body that warms him takes him out to cliffs and throws him over the edge it is not that she has turned against her children but she knows that they will never find their wings in safety the eaglet learns to fly by confronting it's scaring place and it's not even trying to fly it's falling and flapping and thinking mommy is crazy I'll call the Child Protective Services I gotta get out of this but in the process of falling and flapping and fallin and slap it and fall in and flapping and flapping and flapping and slapping come on flapping and flapping and flapping that's how you get your wings when you confront your scary place not I know something allowed you to sit America god it's not giving us the spirit of fear brother jinx but a power additive and a sow mom you gotta suck your bottom lip would you do it but what the Bible said it didn't say that it didn't say that God has not given us fear it says God has not given us the spirit of fear the same God that didn't give me the spirit of fear absolutely gave me fear because fear releases my adrenaline glands it makes me stronger than I would normally be it makes me able to fight or flight based on what the situation in fear keeps me alive when I walk into a strange situation it lets me know be careful all of my sense is gone is my hearing perks up my body tenses and prepares for battle fear is a favor god gives you he didn't give you the spirit of fear but he gave you fear to get your adrenaline going fear makes you study harder fear makes you work harder fear makes you pray harder fear makes you walk upright when you know that there are so many people hope and you fall fear will make you walk upright fear will make you withstand the test you need healthy fear if your body triggers off a healthy fear and the problem with us is we don't have anything to scare us we go to work we go to church then we go home and then we go to work and we go to church and we go home and then we go to work we go to church and we go home well my god what do you need faith forward to do that right you need faith when you had the Red Sea and frame rolls coming in behind you and the wind is blowing and they're gonna kill you if they catch you at any moment and you stand-in and said oh god what do I do and he said I already gave you everything you need it stretch forth your hand and you see the water spark hither and thither and both ways they go now you're living now you're alive now you got something to shout about and I'll give me a temporary be a thing to the glory of God yes I got work out because I faced the thing I was afraid of I'm already the god I don't know who I'm talking to today you need that you preach better when you've had something scary you have to death you because you've had a real experience with God deliver me from these preachers who haven't gone through anything and let's read about all these dead people who did suddenly exciting because none of us living people are gonna do anything exciting ever again and I know God wants to excite you yeah awesome motive man he wants to invigorate yes go ahead yeah you're not old enough to have great kids I got grandkids and great Jesus always wants your attention they think I'm their grandmother but I'm up so I'm down to writing a book or doing something like that the grandkids to come down you know and I act like I don't see him they say Pablo and I like I don't hear pop ha I like oh yeah and when I throw something real important in order to get him go where say boo they take a lot about you about 30 minutes after about 30 minutes he'll come tipping back down the stairs again hey I went on here Papo scare me again tonight when you go home you need to drop down on your knees and say God scare me again come on I love it I have so many favorite sermons of yours one of them that connects with this book when you talk about the flight crew and you talk about the people you surround yourself with you shared a message years ago on constituents comrades you talk about people that are with you in the beginning to get the scaffolding mmm-hmm but once this get once the building's finished the scaffolding go talk about just for a moment the people that we surround ourselves with how that helps our dreams or these entrepreneurs whether they soar or not talk about the like first of all in the book I talk about building your team before you build your dream and and most people will build the team consciously or unconsciously all of my doctor friends have doctor friends all of my lawyer friends I have log your face my PR friends have PR friends my two friends have actor friends presidents have president friends preachers have preachers friends here's the problem if your team does what you do they will always compete with you you want to build a team of people who don't do what you do who do what you're not good at you want them to be strong for your weak so you have to be first of all big enough to admit that you're not good at everything and then surround yourself with people who complete you rather than compete with you yeah you understand what I'm Jesus picks out 12 men surround himself with 12 men not one of them is a rabbi Wow there were rabbis he could have got something to hit somebody to help him do the preaching he has Matthew the tax collector he has looked the physician he has Judas well that would look good big but he had Jews he had Judas counting the money so forth son he says don't worry I'll make you fishers of men but right now I need your boat I need your boat Lord then I need your sermon I'll teach you how to preach later but let me use your boat building a team around you means accessorizing your limitations with competent people if you surround yourself with people who only want to hear you you're in the wrong circle you want to build a circle that almost makes you feel stupid because it leaves you room to grow that's game you want to have the spaces most of us right now are we're exhausted at 30 I've never seen something tired young people all my life 20 years old I'm tired people just got out of bed in the morning time I feel I get back in the baby I think you just got out the babe what's wrong are you sick are you running a fever or something but I'm gonna tell you why we're tired we are surrounded 24/7 by people who need us they nurse from us they want us to fix them heal them talk to them move their furniture and help them in school work out all their issues we're surrounded by people who need us but not people who feed us any time you're surrounded by people who make more withdrawals than you have people who make deposits you're gonna go bankrupt the more people in your life that rise up that needs you I'm not saying run them off but for every cluster of people that need you you need another crowd that feeds you okay and the reason we're exhausted is that people are just drawing the very life out of you every day because they need you and you become God to them and you're not God and playing God is exhausting so you become God to that you divide them of the right to find God because you become their God by fixing all their issues for them and then go home and live with the secret that you're tired and that you're not enough you need a circle of people who are good at different things and you need a circle of people who feed you intellectually not just spiritually not just spiritually intellectually yeah I want you to meet Fred traders my mentor mentoring you about what it's very seldom that you find one person who can mentor you about everything the mentor you have about spirituality might not be the mentor you have about business might not be the mentor you have about weight training and exercise you need different types of mentor I got a guy who work you out until your tongue falls out but he doesn't have any investments he doesn't have any retirement he wouldn't be the person I wanted to mentor me about finances the guy who mentions me about finances but he's rich surrounding yourself with people who feed you rather than people who need you yeah releases a creativity that you didn't even know you had you are one idea away from the dream God children one idea away from a million-dollar dream you're one thought away one little crazy thought for someday don't even have a name for you come up with some little weird name like uber don't be a good man we better be a good name nobody's using that I'll use that name for this crazy idea and this app I'm gonna build out an app and call it over and I'm gonna change the way the world moves around cities yes and we need it right now we leave it right aren't you ever new in this room yes no please this is the future of Tulsa of Oklahoma of the world there are people in here that are gonna be multi billionaires that are gonna create businesses bishop you're planting a seed tonight you're gonna see the harvest in our city you're gonna come back here I hope someday yes yes sir we wants you back as often as you can Tulsa Azusa 1993 yep my world didn't know what was about to happen I didn't know what was about that when I was standing on that stage screaming get ready get ready get ready get ready get ready get ready get ready I'm not sure what I should have been saying it to them or to me I really believe that there are people in this room who are sitting on what you were destined to be and do because we have this clannish need to fit in with our circle of friends and if they're not doing it [Applause] and we are not true to our core true to our core somebody interviewed me and they said well you you're a preacher what are you doing making movies got there in Hollywood making movies and you're supposed to be a man of God I see yeah I'm a preacher but don't put a period where God put a comma yeah sometimes people like to put you in a box for their comfort and you spend the rest of your life living up to what they say you can do in the box they created for you this poor guy didn't have a thought in his head to recognize that Jesus brought the kingdom to us by doing movies that's what the parables were right there were stories Jesus told that if he had cinematic production they would have been movies we have more of Jesus movies that we do of his sermons right a certain man said a certain man had two sons who were these guys Jesus use stories to change the world if he was to come today yes what would Jesus be in this world right now if Jesus came today we would have to teach him church [Applause] Jesus never saw an usher Jesus never saw a deacon Jesus never saw a pulpit Jesus never saw a greeting committee jesus never saw praise dancers Jesus never saw a band can you imagine bringing Jesus to church and you say wait a minute Jesus you can't sit in that section that's why the elders auntie Jesus the doors are going to open promptly at five o'clock but don't go in to say so area to the greenest creature and Jesus I must say anything is wrong with that I'm just saying that Jesus didn't say I come that you might have Church he said I come that you might have life yeah and then she might have it more abundantly yeah I'm about to shout off my own stuff I'm about to give this old and so Texas booted gear up here come on I want to liberate somebody I need to start a revolution I wrote the book to start a revolution because I believe God still got some stuff in you that you haven't tapped into yet that will make you soar to avoid the mansion when you started speaking on how people tried to imprison you into the world of being a preacher in a pastor but you had all these other gifts it set me free on the inside cuz I started thinking God you want to do more you want to do more so talk about how do we how do we embrace those and find and discover those other things that maybe gods placed inside of us the other potentials well when people start your life at your trial sermon you know like it's your birthday like you didn't have any experiences before you did what they call you that's it Rome is Jesus is God is gonna use everything that you learned all of your life not just your save life Paul was a tape maker and the reason he was able to win Aquila and Priscilla is that they were in the same profession that he was and he connected with them first on a professional level Wow are you understanding what I'm saying you bring to the pulpit and you bring to the book and you bring to the movie and you bring to work and you bring to marriage everything that you have learned everything that you have experienced you don't leave anything out and you can't leave anything out your ideas your creativity your you take Joel Osteen who was standing behind a camera up until his father died and look at his television production how pristine and crisp it is and it looks so perfect and it is so excellent because he brings that gift to the pulpit you take Marvin Wildings he can preach he could pass it but he can sing the paint off the wall cuz he brought his gifts yeah with him stop leaving your gifts at home and dumbing down who you are so you can fit in with what people expect you to be bring the uniqueness of you to the table God told you God called all of you your fingers of toes so Ghibli's November your lungs God call all of you yes y'all around it gets wild I think that too many of us are stuck on the ground and we need to be in the air we need to be building again we need to be creating more than we're consuming it's good for us it's good for the country it's good for the economy it's good for the church what is killing the church right now is that all the weight is on the stage all the way there's other stage we come like we're at the movies to watch the people on the stage work out that's not the way the early church was they continue daily going from house to house breaking bread and fellowship or what what the preacher was gone is what the people were doing if two of them got in the city they would turn the city upside down no titles no license no credentials they get in a city and start prayer if they got to praying in a jailhouse they would pray the house down to the Angels sat at the jail cell and church broke out we've got to activate the body of Christ yeah and get us moving again yes that's your neighbors say move move move I love what you say in the book about preparation breeds liberation and you talk about you first talked about how you stare at a text you prepare that text but then when you get on stage you could go anywhere with it mm-hmm talk about how that works with entrepreneurship but share how you've used that not just with preaching but all the different entrepreneurial to me most people have trouble in a business deal because they didn't stare at it enough before they signed it if if you stare at what you want to be before you try to be it if you read everything you can find about it and get in circles with people who are doing it and just stare at it and understand it if you understand what I talk about in the book about wins and trends is it the right thing at the right time that is important it's the same way you do a text you stare at it you just stare at the text you study it that's good but when you finish studying it just stare at it because if you stare at the text the text will talk back to you it'll talk back to you if you stare at the text and you see Jesus cursed the fig tree and you see Zacchaeus a couple of days later he calls him down out of the tree and then a few days later he is hanging on a tree she's fair on the text you will see it hinting to you where the story is going before it gets it if you write if you stare at the text long enough you will recognize that Jay Irish daughter was born the same year the woman with the issue of blood took sick Wow what is going on between this little girl and this woman that while the little girl was going up the woman was going down and now they are on a collision course with destiny that is motivated by the action of a woman who refused to die and Jesus wasn't even coming to her or looking in her direction but she had an impulse that was self-motivated no scripture for it no text for it no greeters welcoming her into it she said to herself if I can touch the hem of His garment I know I'll be made whole now the Bible told her not to touch Leviticus is love let me start over Luke Leviticus says don't touch but this woman has an instinct that this is my moment and if I don't move right now I won't get in I know he's a priest and I know I've been declared unclean by virtue of the law I should be forbidden to touch him but sometimes you have to break a law to get what you need you understand what I'm saying yes when I looked at the Wright brothers I said you know what they broke a law because the the law of gravity said whatever goes up must come down Wow and everybody had been subject to that law until those boys got together and broke into a higher law called the law of aerodynamics when the law of aerodynamics came it was a higher law above the lower law I think some of us are stuck in a lower law a gravitational pull that keeps pulling us back to where we came from and you can jump up for a few days but it pulls you back down again but I came to tell you about a higher law come on that you can break that law and soar into another dimension and never come down again Tesla might say I'm not coming down I'm not coming down there's something that I think God wants us to see about having the courage and the tenacity to own the creativity that's put into you about the create or to move away from the pack and stand by yourself and let God speak to you and show you why are you here why were you born in the family you were born in the generations you were born at the time you were born in the circumstances that you were born that the Potter was so careful to carve you out a certain way where you don't need people or you do need people or you don't need validation or you do need validation he cuts you up in certain places so that you would fit like a key in a lock you're broken in all the right places so that when you find your spot something's going to open for you and when it opens for you every blessing that's been closed down is going to pour in your dimension that's what I'm talking about in the book you talk about shark tank that's one of the shows you enjoy watching and you see these people who come with an idea a dream of business and you see how they talk straight to them there was something about that you shared in your book this want you to share with people tonight well more times than not one of the first questions they will ask you on Shark Tank is how much have you invested and I see people all around who are trying to get people to invest in a dream that they have never invested in you can't get this notion that rich people are just running around with money to give to people with ideas it was fabricated in a liquor bottle because in real life you have to be fully invested in what you're trying to do whether you're trying to build a church even you're trying to build a church you have to be fully God kept me in West Virginia and in a particular part of West Virginia for the first 10 years of my pastor it I didn't see over a hundred people ever ever for the first 10 years of my ministry I taught Bible class to big crowds of 12 yeah sometimes it'd be seven old ladies and two of them be sleep and and if it were if it were for this that I did it I would have quit he hid me in obscurity he developed me in the matrix of frustration put me in there long enough so that I would know why I do it it doesn't matter what you think it doesn't matter what you write it doesn't matter what you put in the paper it doesn't matter what you say because you're writing about 30 years later but you missed the first 30 when my car was broke down and I was thumbing up the road to teach Bible class and climbing over coal trucks to preach and minister to groups of 20 Wow uuugh greatness Fester's in isolation and frustration wow what makes you the man of God you are is never what they see you do on stage it's the agony that nobody sees it's the rolling over in your bed in the middle of the night and tears running across the bridge of your nose that's what makes you a mighty man of God it's never what you do in the spotlight it's what you do in the agony of your womb twisting and turning in the matrix of development and then out of that groaning and moaning comes an utterance from God that shakes the world and that is true of business and that is true of life I was trying to start we were doing we would tour in the country during gospel plays sometimes it went good sometimes it didn't sometimes we broke even sometimes we made money sometimes I was having to put in money from other places to keep the things when I had a for-profit company TD jakes Enterprises is older than the potter's house it wasn't built off the back of the potter's house it existed before the Polish House and I was going plays and tour in the country and written venues and selling tickets and marketing the plays and doing all that kind of stuff and and trying to figure out how to how that business works because in my book I talk about every business has a language if you don't learn the language of the business you can't operate in that business because every business has its own language it has its own ethics and it has its own culture culture are the it's the rules that are never written but if you break one of them you get cast out of the opportunity and you have to study it and stare at it to figure out not what you studied how it works what you studied in a book how it works is not how it works you got to get in that environment and stare at it because the book told you the organizational charge and how things were supposed to flow but in reality this person organizationally is not connected to the CEO but they have his ear and until you stare at it learn the culture of it you don't not do it so I was trying to learn the culture and I ran into another guy out there who was trying to figure it out too and and and we got together and decided we would do something together as trying to remember his name was a Tyler Perry yeah yeah yeah yeah I met him right after he got through sleeping in cars and he met me while I was trying to put this business together and really get it off the ground and we got together and we did woman dollar and loose together and toured all over the country dorm woman our and loose and we finally did it in Beverly Hills and a guy named Reuben cannon saw it and said I think there should be a movie I said that's great but I don't have any money listen to how I think that's great but I don't have any money to make a movie he said don't worry about the money we'll get the money that's a really listen listen at the conversation that were having and the places were coming from two different mentalities have clashed in an idea one mentality says I can't do it because I don't have it the other mentality says if you do it you can do it you can have it so you're gonna get the money as you go you've got to get healed as you go I didn't know anything about that yeah I'm talking to somebody somebody's got an idea right now and you don't see the money to do it right now but as you step into it you're gonna get healed this anyway so we did it we were gonna put it on television but we decided to enter it into the Santa Barbara Film Festival and it did cause much to get it in the film festival and and we put it in the film festival not expected just to get some visibility around and maybe some press we won the Santa Barbara Film Festival well when we wanted to Santa Barbara Film Festival we said let's put it on screen and we put it on screen 400 and 400 two screens and we put it on screen and we put it on screen and Sony Pictures saw it and so Michael Lydon who was the president and he is the president of Sony Pictures came to me and said I recognize your name from the literary world I'm actually from the literary world I know you're an author write books I know about your following in your crowd I saw your movie and I want to contract you to make movies up under our brand and if you tell the stories we'll write the text you'd be surprised how many stories you can tell [Applause] [Laughter] you get real creative where the guy started talking to you like that and for the last 10 or 12 years I've had a first-look contract with Sony Pictures and been held on retainer for them to to do movies and films for them but I was healed as I went when I start talking about business it doesn't start out like it ends up all businesses start out not-for-profit they all start out not-for-profit the the Wright brothers were not the first guys to try to build a plane but they are the ones who did it and they are the ones who are credited for doing it because many people started but they're the only ones who didn't quit Wow you only win if you don't quit your only win if you don't quit if you go to the dark place and the tough place and the scary place and the flappin and fall in place and and you know he slay me and though I'm broke yet shall I trust him and though it doesn't look good if you if you really believe it and you suffer through all of that after a while if you suffer with it you're gonna reign with it you're gonna reign with it whether you started on the ground or you started in the air every great leader will be tested by pain nobody escapes no matter how talented or anointed or gifted I remember you shared on that when you came in 2009 two weeks after my dad passed away and you talked to our church about we're like an arrow being pulled back in a bow mm-hmm and adversity had been coming and man it was a painful season for me but you spoke life to my soul and I wanted to quit but you made me want to stay and we went through stuff I shared with you no but I listened to your podcast a lot and I read your books and I don't know just from a distance your voice stirred don't quit don't quit someone out here is facing things it's causing them to want to quit yeah because they're not seeing any breakthrough and you said in your book you know this millennial generation they want it fast and I heard someone say we're a microwave generation with the crock-pot God and he takes his time and man thankfully in this last year there's been breakthrough happening yes in our church it's a serious guy [Applause] but I want you to talk to someone who's been feeling like it because your book it really gives that language to not quit the the thing the reason we're faith really becomes a valuable message to an entrepreneur because in order to be an entrepreneur you have to get out of the nest when the eaglet is in the nest it doesn't have to fight for food the mother brings it to it but when you get out of the nest you're gonna go through fluctuations you're gonna go through fluctuations and they always are not always financial you don't get to pick what he uses to shake you nobody escapes to all of the poor people who are looking at rich people saying they got away clean maybe man have to go through him to guess they do yes they do they just didn't go through the same thing that you went through yeah nobody escapes the dark room because if you're gonna develop the picture you have to put it in the dark room in those moments of fluctuation that's where God lives God lives in the dark places in the shadows in the agony he said I am a present help in trouble so if you're in trouble you got to come because I'm there with I'm there with you you don't have the right to stand and lead until you have stooped and suffered you had nothing to say until you have cried and groaned and ran the other way and wanted to get out of it you'll never be a prisoner of the gospel until you have tried your chains to see if you could get away and so whether it is the death of a sibling or a parent or a spouse or crippling disease or a financial despair or a public humiliation the the all of the Apothecary is made by the crushing of the root if the root is not crushed there will be no aroma and when you start talking about business there are crushing moments in business there are moments that things don't work out and the problem today is it's not just Millennials based on age we have some candy-coated Christians who think that if something goes wrong it's not God's will let me explain some to you the emblem of our faith is a cross yeah that's a fairly good warning that what you are signing up for could get kind of bloody if your master is hanging from a tree bleeding Holland follow me that's a fairly good hit that this is not going to be a midnight party this there are seasons that try men's souls to the breaking point and I think it's how God guards greatness to keep imposters from stealing it he puts greatness behind agony and if you're not tough enough to endure it you'll walk away from it that way the thief can't steal it you have to pay a price somewhere in your life in order to be who you are I realized I realized in my own life that when Jesus says take up your cross and follow me that he wasn't talking about wood everybody in here has some kind of cross that you can't get off of that you are nailed to that doesn't go away a thorn that in your flesh that doesn't get heal an agony in your life that you deal with in the secrecy of your own mind a child you can't connect with a spouse that wasn't what you imagined a life of relatives and agony that keeps you humble that stops you from being here again that becomes the gymnasium that your faith works out in everybody everybody that is truly a Christian in order to be in covenant with God Abraham you got a bleed somewhere I may cut you in a place that they can't see but if you are really in covenant with me take your son out here and cut him where the people can't see because the side that you are incumbent is that you bled somewhere we call it circumcision but it's bigger than the circumcision of the flesh and it's bigger than the mailing to wood all of us have something in our lives where God proves himself to us through the suffering that we endure in that area and he shows us that not only can he deliver you from it that he can deliver you in it and through it and with it with it time he says I don't have to remove your thorn to make you a mighty man a god in fact my strength is made perfect in your weakness so I heard you're praying Paul and the same guy who prayed and raised the dead could not remove his own thorn because that is what really produces greatness and crushes the root and produces the anointing that somewhere in your life often where no one can see there is an agony so that when you raise your hands you won't be phony and when you lift your hands and tears run down your face it won't be because of cameras or because of something in your life and something that you remember and something that you know down in your soul has brought you into a relationship with God that you couldn't read in a book and you can buy the faith you suffered can anybody relate to that clappity to the late today and the reason that I thought it was important to talk about it in the book is because most people get in the business and the moment they hit a hard spot they said well that wasn't for me that was probably I see people 35 years old and they've been in ten different businesses I tried that and that didn't work now I tried it for love I didn't like that and I want to redo that in it they didn't like me and I want to relive that but that much for me I don't know stop just because it's got a cross in it doesn't mean there's not a crowd in it just because you had to bleed a little bit doesn't mean it's not for you just because you weren't comfortable flapping in the wind doesn't mean that if you don't if you keep flapping you won't soar I don't know I have had the privilege of being around some of the most successful people in the world at this Amazing Race to be in the room I've been around successful people just just enough to know what that is and it looks like I don't know any of them that don't bleed somewhere they don't endure something somewhere I don't know anybody who runs a corporation and that doesn't go home sometimes and says how can I be so good at this and so terrible as a father or so frustrated as a wife there's gotta be something in your life that keeps you on your knees and just because you have trouble does it mean you won't have triumphs they are magic to get in fact in fact I'm I was used to me I could use this illustration and the women would really get it but today we had these women who could with jiffy's so they won't get this for me to the older women too here you'll know what I'm talking about have you ever tasted baking powder in that's a nasty stuff baking powder tastes like strychnine it tastes like the Baker is trying to kill you and by itself nobody would eat it but if you mix it in with flour and shorten it add a little bit of buttermilk as you need it just right and put it in some heat the very thing that tasted the worst is what makes the bread rise that bitter thing in your life that tasted by itself left it after taste in your mouth that said that's horrible that's the very thing that makes you rise me and AJ we're talking about this right before we pick you up tonight talking about your sermon serum solutions news and and a doctor that Ebola and the cure to it was actually in the sickness mhm yeah they cured Ebola with Ebola I was just at my doctor's office the other day and they gave me the flu to keep me from getting the flu they shut the the influenza in me to keep me from getting the flu the serum for the snakebite is made from the poison Jesus could not deliver us as the righteousness of God he became sin for us who knew no sin that as he was lifted up as the very thing I was trying to get away from he was able to cure what I was into because he became sin that I might become the righteousness of God my faith in Christ Jesus Bishop I believe people in this room are gonna leave tonight to soar and to their businesses their dreams their marriages their families but entrepreneurs for sure this is a book that's gonna stir people up to start things to be creative to look at a problem and have a god idea to solve that problem with apps and businesses and fashion all kinds of things that you stir people up here's what I want us to do he's gonna share a closing word before he does how many have received something night how many all received from just this whole time you wouldn't go to a restaurant and eat a meal and not pay for the bill so I want to do something this was free tonight but we want to bless Bishop Jake's and I want us to just give an offering tonight and so at the end of your row there's envelopes or if it's easier for you to text to give you could pull out your phones there's gonna be a link up there I want us to give tonight and then he's gonna share a closing word and then out of that he's gonna sign 100 books the first 100 people after he shares but don't leave because his closing words gonna be the most powerful part and you're gonna want to get this book but this has been so insightful so powerful you've got so much in here I was gonna ask you about but I know we're getting we got a time limit time crunch here you've got things about I love your chapter where you talk about hidden figures that was one of my wife and I was favorite movies this past year you talk about the marketing ideas for now I'm forgetting the title of the movie the broom oh oh you're jumping the broom jumping the broom you talk about what y'all did in your city to market it what entrepreneurs can do to market the idea the dream on a budget you talk about signing your own checks that one yeah yes sir yes sir it's it's the kind of thing that that that we really need to take a look at the the Bible said something that that I want to I know you're getting ready receive often but I just want to say the Bible says when the wicked shall rule the earth shall mourn and wherever there's wicked leadership there will always be wailing when the wicked ruled the earth mourn I believe that if those of us in the kingdom would take our rightful place of ruler and leadership not only would it bless us but far more importantly though there are so many people that want to lodge up under the shade of your next idea Wow that if you hadn't have stuck it out look at the souls that wouldn't have come to Christ they'd have never come to Christ had you not endured your dark place and sometimes God brings you through and it's not even for you it's for all those people that are gonna come through you and because there's so many people that are gonna be blessed because of what you do God sustains you and pulls you through when I start talking about entrepreneurship as I was writing it not only was it good for interpreters or good for pastors or good for leaders if you never opened up a business there's a certain mindset where you take responsibility for outcomes in you life when you ride through the fluctuations and the adversity and you have a commitment in your heart that I'm not gonna sit in this little nest and wait for somebody to drop something in my mouth I'm going on the hunt I'm going on the hut and I'm going after my dreams I believe I think it's kind of weird that I'm in Tulsa tonight you and I both know that 60 days ago I wasn't supposed to be in Tulsa tonight and even 30 days ago I wasn't supposed to be in Tulsa it's almost like God called this media yes he then Paul I don't think it was for me or for you right I think that God put Tulsa on my itinerary because somebody in this room or in the overflow needed a word from the Lord that would confirm something in their spirit am i right is it you know what you are you are a lot of set it off in Tulsa yes you are to start a revolution in Tulsa yes if you study the history of this city two or three times God tried to really set it off in Tulsa right and every time we get started the enemy tries to put it out but we need to serve notice on the devil tonight game right in Tulsa Oklahoma then we are going to take this city back for the glory of God somebody help me praise him in here tonight glory glory glory glory glory glory this was supposed to be a blessed city spiritually financially physically there's supposed to be a Wall Street up in here there was supposed to be a future up in here there was supposed to be healing and deliverance and restoration in this city I rebuked the powers of darkness [Applause] over this city over this people go in Jesus name and I believe if it's going to turn around it's gonna turn around through you it's gonna turn around through you shake hands with two things people said it's gonna turn around through lids gonna turn around through me this is a prophetic word today in the Tulsa World newspaper front page it said rising fears fears fears yes and it was all over the paper than the biggest fears in our city this year the highest murder rate who ever in our city this year highest theft rate all kinds of reasons fears to be afraid but I love what you said God stirring us to walk into those fears yes does it take authority over our city and over this state this nation and to come into the economy and to change things yes to break cycles of poverty yes to stir up it's not about being rich it's not about what you drive it's not about impressing people but in order to accomplish what God wants to accomplish in the earth you can't do that broke right you cannot do it growth you cannot do it broke you cannot do it growth you can pray for the people that are doing it but I'm tired of praying for the people that are doing it I want to be the people that's doing it it's time for us to rise up and build are you with me yes you should be the next governor and you should be the next mayor and you should open up the next Wall Street and you should start the banking institution I'm tired of working with the same banks we need some new banks there to be just that that'll be fair that'll be compassionate and still do profitable business it should be unit bills that makes them all in this city it should be you that brings closer back on fire again god wants to do it through you through you through you it's gonna happen through you some of you God brought you here so you can have it encounter with him so that something amazing could happen in your life you didn't come here and go to school to go work for some crazy drunk either you came to start a new order a new way for your sons and your daughters and your neighbors and your friends we can't sit around and wait for folks overseas to come back I hope they do we can't wait but time they come back if we figure out how to do this new jobs cuz old jobs are gone we'll all be old people what you have is right now what you have is right now you don't have next year you have right now and I will serious when I said it I don't say this from a sense of arrogance I don't need to be out here peddling books I came to deliver a message I I came to talk to people who are on the ground to reimagine yourself in the air and the pomp faith in your heart as a sign I think my life is a side I I was not the son of a prophet I didn't come from a dynasty of anything I came from the hills of West Virginia the second poorest state in the Union and a minority in the second poorest state in the Union I am the child of a janitor I am a sign to this world that if God be for you you know I'm messing up darling I gotta quit let me say it's one little thing in order to have somebody coach you not only do they need to know the game they need to know you yeah so whether it's football or baseball or basketball they need to know you and I think every now and then God uses somebody who has come from disadvantaged who limps up who has been lepers who has been wounded in some way to say to the world all things are possible to him that believes we didn't get to talk about it but you know I did two chapters or women in business and entrepreneurship amongst women african-american women in particular are going in the business more readily than any other people group in the country Wow yeah they're born they're born in the business like you would not imagine the problem is you're not staying in the business because they don't have the sustainability they don't understand how to operate with little capital and they don't have access to mentors you're so busy doing the work that they don't get to think the work and so in the book I talk about thinking the work rather than doing the work you may hire somebody to do it you need to back up and think it you don't go into business because you can do it John Maxwell says if you know how to do something you will always have a job but if you know why they do it they will always work for you you have to say well I'm saying that this is serious because if we could decrease 70% of the prayer requests we are getting our four chairs and tables if we could decrease the church's focus on getting stuff that is land stuff we could go back to praying about God stuff yes we could go back to seeing the miraculous power of God move in a church again yeah we could build the church and not have to beg a bank yes we could do exploits in our cities and in our town and we wouldn't be so much at the mercy of elected officials we are the people we have been waiting on yes and I really do I'm serious about setting off for revolution and in my spirit I see young people and black people and white people and brown people and old people and retired people rising up with new vigor and new strength and new vision and new creativity and new ideas you would be surprised what success would do to racism both on the perpetrator and the victim see when people are down they need somebody to hate when they get up they feel totally different it went when there is justice and equality and freedom for all we could walk our streets at night we could have peace in our city until we deal with the inequities in our cities and in our nation and in our country I wonder who is in jail I see rich people building bigger walls around nicer homes and I just wonder who is in prison we are locked up because of the things we won't fix we need a change and we need it now we need it now and I'm not waiting another four years and I'm not waiting another four years and I'm not waiting to see whether Republican is a Democrat Sierra in dependency I've seen all of them in and all hell has broken loose I want to get Jesus elected let's get Jesus elected let's get Jesus elected let's get Jesus elected elected in your City elected in your hospitals and your businesses and your companies in your leadership the reason some of you got to come here and go to school is because you're next you may not get a job you may be a job and your education it's going to serve you well but not if you're going to be a slave to some hypocritical tyrant that you're gonna work for something lesser than you who am I talking to tonight if I said something tonight that challenge you were convicted you or spoke to you in any kind of way if you think you were supposed to be here tonight that a seed has been deposited in you tonight get up on your feet and give God any kind of praise to God [Applause] [Music] [Applause] can I pray forward for the seeds has renewed tonight yes and the people who are watching online the people around the world I want you to lift that seed up I just want to pray over it tonight yes the first this is the first investment in your hereafter this is a moment that we saw the first seed and to reimagining our skills in to finding our wings into moving into a new dimension of thought tonight to myself tonight tonight lift the seat up higher lift it up higher father God in the name of Jesus there are eagles all over this room some of them have been locked up in chicken coops surrounded by cheap wire but tonight Lord let them escape the small parameters that have kept them incarcerated and raised him up for your glory like never before there are some coaches in here we need to go back to coaching and mentoring it somebody needs to go back to teaching and training and helping and serving some of these young people to find their way everybody's got a role to play in this role the reason the death angel did not get us today is that we have purpose left to do in the earth let us do it in the name of Jesus I bless every business I bless every ministry I bless every vision I bless it now in the name of Jesus I bless books that haven't been written songs that
